The water bugs: I had one land on my arm in Houston Texas when I was visiting, around 1970. I stared at it a second - I was only used to June bugs and Praying mantis in that size range. The thing was about 2"-2-1/2" long, and unlike those critters, this one bit me!!
My arm swelled up like a balloon, and this was before we had reliable easy to access antihistamines. Hurt like the devil. I smacked it off my arm and it flew away, apparently unconcerned. They aren't just nightmares. If they land on something organic, they will bite!!

I wonder why those worms are so long. You wouldn't think you need so much body mass and surface area to keep you rooted to the floor. Developing and maintaining such an excess body mass means higher nutrient requirements, and that's a disadvantage. Only the very top of the worm seems to have value for acquiring said nutrients. Maybe it has to do with reproduction, or it's a vestige of an ancestor that had different needs. Very interesting.
