Thanks. I appreciate it. I took up the commentary earlier this year, and it took forever to record trying to make it perfect. So I decided to loosen up and just got with the flow. Now it takes like 20ntp 30 minutes to start to finish and sounds more natural to myself. At the end of the day, I'm a class clown that might make my art teacher happy. I finally make art, even if it's on steel instead of paper.

Tony is a valuable resource and has taught me a lot. I’ve been using G-flex for several years and do like you said, glue up and come back the next day. Incredibly strong, screwed up and needed to remove some scales once, had to grind scales off! Nice pattern on that blade and your coffee etch is super dark, great job
Great knife bro. I like the style of knife making you have. It’s different than most with great results. Your patterns are cool. The temperature, the humidity, and if you don’t get the mixture exactly right can affect your epoxy. 👍👍
I'm thinking of using a scale to measure the epoxy now. I eyeballs it for 3 years but now apparently I need new eyeballs because issues keep coming up with it.

I don’t make knives but I’ve messed with a lot of epoxy and the usual issue with it not setting up is either not mixing thoroughly or temperature. If it’s cold in your shop it will take longer you might try clamping it together and setting it somewhere warm. Great video as always

Man, that scratch depressed me. Imagine finishing a knife and going. I'll cut a water bottle and them boom out of know where and extra few hours of work magically appear 😅

That is a fantastic looking knife. Crazy how those washers stretch out. love that handle. I had a couple of packs of suspect epoxy, I think some counterfeit products find their way into the supply chain. Nothing is immune from this. Even aircraft spares get ripped off. A few years back In purchased some Mitutoyo callipers from a local and trusted supplier. Only to find out they were fake. Got my money back, the supplier reckoned they come into the supply chain at a very high level.
That's crazy but with the world now a days it's definitely possible. Regardless the new epoxy has a longer work time which will definitely come in handy.

That setup must have been tedious to do. 😄 I reckon you could do this again but this time cut and square it in for pieces, stretch it out again. Might get an interesting pattern out of it.
@@JPsBladeworks make a long enough rectangular billet, then cut into equal squares and arrange into a cube. Weld that, smash that into the normal knife billet shape and go from there.
Great work I look forward to watching every Sunday morning. G-flex epoxy is the best. I also use pops knife supply epoxy either the 15-30 minute depending on how patient I am to finish.

@@JPsBladeworks then that is likely the issue. A different epoxy may or may not cure the problem. I'm sure other craftsmen deal with the same issue. Maybe ask a few how they deal with it or contact the manufacturer for advice?
@christianclark1983 there are many makers with great builds. If you got a welder and can repurpose older materials for this you can keep it fairly reasonable.
They might have just gone cheaper with it. I have the new epoxy on the way. It's supposed to get here Friday so I hope I can get the glue up done with enough time for the next build.
Good work mate. I wish someone wod do a bent forward (and down) tanto style knife. The blade would then have a forward (and down) bend with a tanto point. Full tang. About 5 to 6 inches...
Is part of the problem with your drill press that the belt is slipping? If that's the case, try spraying it with a little Simple Green. It's a fantastic cleaner and conditioner for rubber.
The issue is the pulley is damaged where the key holds it in place. So it's nearly holding on and can't produce a lot of forge without slipping. I just need to order a new one to change it out with.

Those last 2 holes you drilled where the tang meets the handle are compromising the strength. You might get away with that for a kitchen knife. But a camp knife or fighting blade would break over time. Great pattern. I think doing the same thing with smaller bearings and washers would a good one.
I really love the blade. It really came out with eyes, such a great forge. If I could be so bold to offer a suggestion - I might have gone with a muted handle in a natural hue. Dark wood. Ipe, maybe? The magic is in the blade pattern and the current handle draws the eye away from your skills. Just a thought - I'm an idiot with an opinion on the internet. I deserve as much consideration. 😂 Again, marvelous build!
I get what you mean but most of the time I just use what I have on hand. I would like to use more natural woods but I need to get a stabilizing set up going so I can stabilize that material.
Slow setting epoxy might be due to age/moisture absorption. How long have you had that epoxy sitting around? With how many knives you make, you don’t need to buy the huge bottles. Very cool pattern!
They are small 5 minute epoxybi get at home depot for like $20. And I've bought 3 in the last 2 months because I wasn't sure if it was a bad batch or what it was since it's always work for me for the last 3 years with no issues.
@@JPsBladeworks It’s entirely possible that it was a bad batch. It’s probably good that you’re switching to a higher quality epoxy. West Systems epoxies are some of the best normal humans can get ahold of.
With all the steel and as nice as it comes out, why not do some smaller knives. Keep some cool Damascus in reserve. Just curious. Just found your channel not to long ago and subbed. Keep up the great work.
Great build I think all you TH-camr knife makers are awesome just asking if you draw lines to know your desired handle thickness using a belt sander why can’t you just cut them with a bandsaw again I just asking
10:50 you mention J.B. Weld brand? i find that it has closer to a 15 - 20 minute work time instead of the 5 minutes it says works great for small castings though

Yes it will be for sale. I have a few I need to touch up. For this one I'm not sure yet. I don't have a price sheet or anything like that yet so I'm guess since it's a pretty long knife and with the materials used I would need to charge a minimum like $300 to break even on it. What do you think would be a fair price?

It's all in the prep. A thick dry coat of white spray pain can make miracles happen.

I'm certainly no expert but to my knowledge epoxies have expiry dates and when they expire they don't cure properly and come out a little rubbery.
I mean, it's still basically a machete lol...Bro, that fucking shop rag that kept flopping over was pissing me off hahahahaa...it came out great

I've had the same issue with jb welds 5 and 15 min epoxy glue. It's like they are 'watering it down' some how, or just cheaper products.
They might have just gone cheaper with it. I have the new epoxy on the way. It's supposed to get here Friday so I hope I can get the glue up done with enough time for the next build.

Question... wouldn't cutting the billet in half and then adding core steel make it "safer" to ensure it's centered for the cutting edge?
Yes but that would elongate the pattern even more that what it is on the knife and look less how I wanted it.

I find it faster to just grind it with the 2x72 especially if it is on the thicker side since it helps the life of the bandsaw blade.

I had no issues with it for 3 years and all of a sudden it's taking days for my stuff to dry.
What does the Coffee do?
It darkens certain steels and makes the pattern bolder. In this case it darkens the core steel and makes it more pronounced.

I think it looks pretty good the way it is. It does have a lot of movement but that's what gives it the wow factor in my opinion.

The hardener can go bad over time which will stretch out cure time. That’s probably what you experienced.

If you strip the knife and reetch it will it be for sale if so how much and will it come whit a sheath
Yes it will be for sale. I have a few I need to touch up. For this one I'm not sure yet. I don't have a price sheet or anything like that yet so I'm guess since it's a pretty long knife and with the materials used I would need to charge a minimum like $300 to break even on it. What do you think would be a fair price?

You probably aren't using enough of the hardener in the epoxy
I hear too much hardener causes similar problems but the epoxy never full hardens.
@@JPsBladeworks there are definitely better epoxy out there.
