#40 IFR Currency Flight in a Cessna 441 Conquest II

  • This week we are flying with my customer Rob Ryan who needed me as a safety pilot while he was working on his IFR currency in his beautiful Cessna 441 Conquest II. In this video we chat a little bit with Rob and his pilot and ownership experience. The Cessna 441 Conquest II is pretty much the top of the line multi-engine propeller aircraft by Cessna. It's got incredible performance for really relatively low operating cost. Rumors are that Cessna killed the Conquest program so it could sell more Citations. Rob has taken this plane non-stop from Long Beach to Tampa, Florida!
    Oh and here is a correct picture of a PIPER 400LS: jetav.com/piper-cheyenne-400ls... - thank you for noticing!

    A Conquest II is a huge transition from a Saratoga. He did really well flying the plane, situational awareness as well as a great ear on comms. Most owner operators I have flown with are nowhere close to his level of competency. Very nice flight Rob.

    I love this guy. Had a Saratoga, no multi time since the 80’s and zero turbine time and was like “I think I want a Cheyenne 400LS” lol! I think it’s incredible. The Conquest II is a total beast in its own right, I don’t fault the insurance company for their requirements. Everyone says the same thing when transitioning from single pistons or piston twins to twin turboprops: “Everything happens so much faster”. It’s very true. You have to be way out ahead of the plane and that can only happen with tons of practice and experience.
    You can’t help but love this amazing plane though. The 441 has a quality that’s entirely it’s own. It’s the end of the great line of twin Cessnas. This guy has grown on me too, he definitely knows what he wants and isn’t embarrassed to go after it.

    Fun video Rich, thanks! I used to work for a company that have 2 Cessna jets (Citation 4 n 5) and a Cessna Conquest, which I flew on from BWI to MOB.....I made them stop at CGI to pee (I could not use the tube in front of 4 of my peers)....funny the pilots and others also RAN to the bathroom and we all agreed we really did need the FUEL as the HEADWINDS were strong that day...nice plane thought! (PS.....in a corporate environment, this is also 2 pilot plane!)

    Great video!!! Appreciate all the knowledge you’ve shared. Cessna has limit the airframe time to 22,500 hours….why? Is there still issues with the wing spar on the C441? It’s a nice airplane with those Garrett engines…are those -10’s engines? The range on the C441 is like 2200nm right depending on payload? Can you fly that from California to Hawaii? Thanks again!!! Sorry for all the questions but I’m a huge fan of the C441.

    What a beautiful airplane. I think that you are doing a good job staying ahead of the airplane. If I could give you a couple pieces of advice, I think that you should work on briefing the approaches that you are flying for better situational awareness, also try to develop a flow for different configurations of the airplane. ( before takeoff, climb, cruise, descent, and approach), then back up with a checklist, and have your copilot help you with some workload during critical phases of flight. Just some observations! Safe flying to you!

    The 441 is a magnificent aircraft. At FL350 trues 280 to 290 knots at a fuel burn of 60 gallons an hour or a little less. Ive flown most of the fleet and did the flights for the first RVSM solution and recently did the flying for the rvsm solution for the Garmin autopilot. For range and performane theres nothing that will run with the 441. Just a stab, you run away and hide from a B200.

    I see Garmin as very similar to Cirrus, not saying there is anything wrong with any of their products but their super power is marketing and getting their systems in as upgrade and OME equipment especially in the training environment. So many pilots have learned on them and may not even be aware of other manufacturers even they are viable options.

    Great video Rich. Any idea if he considered a TBM 700 instead of this airplane? I know they are quite a bit different but the acquisition price + speed/range of the TBMs are right in line. I'm guessing the TBM would be quite a bit cheaper to own and operate as well.

      @FlyingwithRich  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rob?

    • @TIO540S1
      @TIO540S1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      TBMs are, without a doubt, fantastic airplanes. Each generation has significant enhancements. But the TBMs in the price range I was looking at had some downsides for me. For one thing, I wanted a twin. I know it's said that, for a twin, in the event of an engine failure, the remaining engine has just enough power to get you to the scene of the crash. And, statistically, that's probably accurate, at least for light twins. But, on a single engine, this airplane climbs at (in most situations) at least 750 f.p.m. at maximum gross takeoff weight and has a service ceiling in the high teens. I stay well-trained (in fact, I was at Flight Safety for my semi-annual recurrency training this week). So, with all of that said, I feel very comfortable on the missions I fly with two engines (and, pretty much, two of everything - generators, hydraulic systems, etc.). Also, I have nine seats and a flushing lav. I know that current TBMs have that option but current model TBMs are outside of my price range. And my wife is a big fan of having a toilet!

      @@TIO540S1 I've heard that from other pilots as well. I'm no longer flying, haven't been for quite some time, and I doubt I'll be able to get my medical back, but I do like the looks of the Vantage units. I certainly would like to be able to see them go head to head against the G950Nxi system as far as a retrofit into older airplanes. Even in the Conquest, a two-display system with the IFDs would be a VERY capable system.

      To what Rich said, I’d add that the sims available for the Conquest II at Simcom and Flight Safety are not nearly at the same level as those for Citations, Phenoms, and the like. That said, I’ll be at Flight Safety this week for recurrency training where there will be engine cuts at rotation, fires, single engine approaches with a miss at minimums, and all manner of emergencies that can’t be done in the airplane,

    I almost asked a dumb question, if it was a conversion. Very nice, never saw one. Seems they want you to have a single PT6 or a jet these days. 8( JMHO --gary

      Very true. Conquest II is really an amazing plane - didn’t play well against early Citations - nearly as fast, much more fuel efficient and longer legs!

      @@FlyingwithRich I am just potentially starting out....amazing to see all of the pilots on here. Im on the older side but I might take the plunge. I was up twice and i was very very nervous (years apart). I am going up again in a few weeks and see how i feel. Thank you for all of the great content !

    I dunno, maybe I'm one of the outliers in the world, but although these videos are interesting to watch, I honestly don't want to be watching OTHERS doing this kind of stuff. I want to be doing it MYSELF. Your videos don't go into any detail (not even a smidge) about how these individuals really achieved this kind of wealth. Hell, even a Saratoga II is close to MILLION DOLLARS! And he's UPGRADED to a 441...... It gets exhausting looking at these machines and lifestyles, wondering what it REALLY took to get there. Like I said, I really don't want to be living through TH-cam, I want to be doing it myself. Working for the last 30 years, following the standard mantra of getting educated, getting a meaningful job, and working my way up through the ranks, has never afforded (nor will it EVER afford) this lifestyle.
    Do we all have to be entrepreneurs, lawyers, doctors, insurance CEOs, or have had the personal social upbringing and resources to do this?? The few people I've actually met that can afford this, have ALL had some nefarious background in "realestate development"/city commission bribery or some business-swindle-related enterprise. It seems an honest living just doesn't cut it.
    Rather than complain about my perspective, how about some real answers?
