How to catch big Oscar cichlids in the Florida Everglades

- In this video I show how to catch big Oscar (Astronotus ocellatus) in the Florida Everglades. I use crappie jigs, trout magnet jigs, and cut bait to catch them. Many people travel to South Florida to fish for these fish since they fight hard for their size and can be caught using panfish fishing techniques. Lots of people keep Oscar as aquarium pets since they are beautiful and have an interesting personality. Oscar are native to Brazil, Peru, Venezuela, French Guiana, Ecuador, and other South American countries. I have been fishing these places in the Everglades for over 25 years. I highly recommend fishing here if you enjoy catching lots of fish on artificial lures. Near the end of the video I show a +8 foot alligator that got very close to where I was fishing.

Wonderful colors on those fish. If anything, even more beautiful than the ones I see in aquariums.

@troyskiles3163 Thank you for watching! Oscar cichlids will hit the same lures bass will, so you can catch them on artificial worms, swimbaits, topwaters, and other bass lures. With that said, fresh cut bait and small lures is what works best for me.

SK's CRAPPIE Catchn Adventures Thank you for watching! I had a lot of fun catching these Oscar. That alligator was watching me fish for over an hour and got very close to where I was fishing. This place is loaded with alligators, water moccasins, and other types of animals so you have to constantly watch your surroundings while fishing.
@@Grouperhunter Gators are usually scared of people unless they have been fed then they get way too close.....
SK's CRAPPIE Catchn Adventures Some people do feed alligators and that makes them become a danger to fisherman and anyone who gets close to the water. It is possible that this +8 foot alligator has not been fed by anyone and is bold since it knows it is on the top of the food chain where it lives. That gator was hoping for a free meal. That spot was loaded with them oscars. If I had to guess, I'd say you were using about a size 2 J hook with the cut bait. That's about what it looked like to me anyway.

There are a lot of Oscar in the Everglades and you can catch lots of them using the techniques I show in this video. I was using a size 2 hook for cut bait. A size 1 hook would also be a good choice.
