What really defines a "compromise" With the fake ones these days, you ARE getting exactly what your money is worth. Even with the 3rd party, most of them is asking just the right price for the value. The fandom is really dictating getting themself screwed in the behind by buying Hastak's products. The only toys I could remember that the price is exact the value you are getting is MP01 and all its variants. I mean look at M01 or MPP10, both priced at $100 (even less with high availability), if hastak made those toys, they would price it at the $300 mark, and the fandom would say take my money. I refuse to be a part of this and I took my stand with MP megs. I have all 3 3rd party versions, and all of them tickle my fancy. I would wait for the fake mp36 to get it at its real worth, which is $100. Wei Jiang is making waves with its highend transformers, and I am more excited with their upcoming MPP10 scale megatron. Heck, your getting way too much more value when you get the Robot Hero seekers compare to the original ones, and even the yes models. Back to my point, in most cases if a 3rd party, or ko is better quality than takar (ie Hastak seekers, MPP10 vs MP10), I think buying a Takara is compromising. And, paying $100 more for %10 difference in quality is a rip off. Lets all agree, most of G1 collectors are in their mid 30s to 40s, and hopefully they don't play with their transformers lik an 8 year does, this $65 Shockwave is most definitely enough for most of us.
Nice review. Didn't realise my Shockwave was a KO until I saw this video! Either way I don't mind as I have not had that many problems with him, paint chipping on the cable included. You're definitely right when it comes to quality control!
Mine had a non functional arm LED out of the box, but a little bit of surgery and solder later, and it's great. The spring has a couple chips on one end, but it's not flaking off or anything. Overall, worth the $65 I paid.
Interesting comparison, especially because of the spring. I have an official MP Soundwave and I can confirm that it actually has a painted spring too, because mine has started peeling horribly which is quite sad. I haven't had any issues with the LEDs though, and I don't recall them acting weird on camera. It'd be really nice if it were possible to buy new hips for the official MP Shockwave so that you could have those extra ratchet joints. And yes, the head transformation sucks. I think mine pops off most of the time when I try to transform it, unfortunately. You can get it to click in place but, as you pointed out, it's tough.
the KO version is priced properly... the Takara figure is horribly overpriced. About $150 USD... very little paint.. few diecast bits. I'm going for the KO
A great review! I got a KO from ebay before xmas. Then I ordered the official version after I watched this review. Funny enough that I got a chance to compare the two myself. Every issue shown in this video is seen on my KO too :). The paint on the spring cable does come off a bit though as easily as it was in the video. There is an air bubble in the translucent plastic piece inside the head (not sure what's the proper name for that piece) so the eye does not look as bright as the one on the official version. In the battery chamber in the gun arm (LR44 x 2), the spring contact is for positive end while the flat one is for negative - In the KO it's the other way around. The ratchet joints on the hip was a silly modification, along with the ratchet problem on the feet, which makes the KO hard to stand on a surface. I don't understand why some regarded this as an "improvement". It might be easy to reverse-engineer an implementation but it is much harder to reverse-engineer a design. There are reasons why every piece is what it is. Overall I don't consider the KO is a good value. 50$ price tag isn't cheap for a piece of garbage. I will keep this one but I think it is gonna be my last KO.
Great review but when talking about the bottoms of the boxes you missed another difference: the Takara version has yellow fill above the text on the bottom left and the KO does not
Awesome review! I like that the KO included the hip ratchets. The friction joints were clearly a mistake. I tightened the thigh swivel though. My spring still has all the paint on it though and I enjoy the hell out of it. The screws are a bit too tight making stressmarks though. I see overly tight screws more often in Ko's.
Yes just minor chipping that's hardly visible. And yes I have this KO. I have this I think for about a small month now and transformed and posed it several times.
I have this ko and have had no issues whatsoever with overtightened screws, paint chipping,wobble, etc. also, no problem with my spring either.there were only two spru marks that I just shaved off with an exacto knife. The seller I deal with is a friend that moved back to China several years ago though so he did intentionally send me a really good one(plus since I sell them stateside, he knows I'm more likely to buy a much larger order if the quality is there in the examples I get, plus he actually cares about his reputation as a seller himself so he does his best to only sell quality to begin with)For 50 bucks shipped it's insane to me how much the official cost. People really have to stop citing r&d with a lot of mps, because most of the engineering has already been developed(for the most part) through years of releases of these characters,characters like soundwave and the seekers come to mind. Licensing is a valid reason with the cars though. 50 bucks and it's way better than my official like almost every other ko I've been sent. I'm sorry you got sent a shit example but that's the thing about kos, it really is luck of the draw.

I just recently got one, idk which batch it might be. The box on mine doesn't have the gun arm bleeding over to the other side of the box, but it has mushroom pegs for the hands. The right thigh doesn't like to stay sandwiched together well, but it looks fine on the shelf, at least. The purple spring's paint doesn't chip off everywhere, fortunately. I haven't tested the light up features bc I really don't care, but others have said their's was DOA. Also the feet are like the KO in this video, not lined up with the lower shin . . . panels, idk what to call them. Overall, well worth it for 45 bucks. I'm happy with it.
Great vid man, you missed on the box another give away, the color on the "Takara Tomy" logo background on the KO is purple as to the Takara which is Blue. Cheers lad 😊👊🏼

Well I was just thinking all my KO,s have been almost perfect so I tried to move a stiff diaper flap on my MP36 megs and it snapped on me , like of course it did I basically jinxed myself

The KO version's hose is trash but there are replacement hoses that you can buy on eBay for literally a few bucks which solves a big problem on the KO.

Mine latest KO (received it totday) does have the deception logo on the back. SO I guess that they forget to put it there when they where rewriting the lettering and fix it. So that is no longer a give away!
Yes it is. I will repaint that spring with warhammer paint because the paint is coming indeed off if you touch it too much. That was a little disappointed but overal a nice figure!
Don't forget the pictures are the same but the lettering will be edited to make it crystal clear and I think they just forgot to put that decepticon logo back on while they where editing. And you already got it a few weeks so you probably have one of the first batch releases. Somebody probably noticed it and fixed the box!
When they scan the original box, they will edit the box (probably with something like photoshop) and re-write the lettering (so it doesnt lool scanned to much) so thats the reason why the letters are always cyrstal clear but the pictures are a bit darker.
I got a ko version when they were first released and had none of the issues reviewers were pointing out and he was exactly the same as my official, spring and all. The only difference was the way the hand light pulsated on the ko (which i see as an improvement)but I buy all my kos from a friend I grew up with in nyc that moved back to China so he sends me the best examples of whatever's going around. Even my ko mp36 had none of the issues I've seen in reviews. No sprue marks, no scuffs, everything pegs in properly and he has his unibrow on all of his faces. Also have to mention all fakes sell for a hell of a lot less money in China than even the lowest priced sellers list them for. I feel bad for anyone that got stuck with this piece of shit version. Another shitty one that seems like it's being pushed specifically for export to the west that has a also has a great version is grapple. There's ones that don't have all those problems but its cheaper for the sellers to pick up those screwed up ones, so they do and push them on buyers because there's more money to be made but oh well people always look for the cheapest price on eBay or Amazon instead of trying to find someone you trust and build a relationship with them. As a regular, respectful costumer they will tell you to pass on some pieces altogether or tell you to give them a few days to source you a proper one.

The reason the ko is taller is because the waist is extended
The electronics on the Takara is already giving out.
I opened up the wrist on Takara, slightly corroded battery. Replaced it, and the hand canon is working again.
Cheap 25 cent battery. Cutting corners. Part of that $100 premium.
easy way to automatically tell, look at light in the barrel of the gun, the KO is much darker, Takara's light is brighter.
