Those guys are right, screws take up to much time. But they build a fence and leave. When I build a fence for someone I service it, so screws are your best friend then. Great job man

This was very Helpful. I have a 16 foot wide opening that has had a sagging problem almost since the beginning. I just found the adjust a gate and figured I would give it a try. I watched your video with the sound down just to get a rough idea and did EXACTLY what you did. Skinned it at night because I have Dogs and the next morning had to figure out where I messed up. Watched the video again with the sound up and was kicking myself for causing myself the extra work. Also the Screws... Great advice. I always use screws. 1 side of my yard is a neighbors fence and it was put up with nails. Impossible to repair a board without destroying it.
Came home from a work trip to a snapped fence post. Had always intended on putting in a gate in that run of fence anyway. Glad to see your video because I'm off work this week and I'll be doing this project.
On the farm as a kid, we were instructed that all the dirt go back into the post hole. Plus, our frost line is 48” and a double gate takes 60 to 80 MPH winds. I had to use 8” X 8” X 10’ treated 48” below grade, because it is 16 feet wide. Just point the bottoms like a pencil action on some gravel. Using 3 eyelet lags & 3 match pegs, I put 2” X 6” at ends with 2” X 4” treated attached with gang plate nailers. Welded slip on 1/2” plates make the log splitter push them in. They don’t make a metal frame in this size, so top to bottom corner have 1/2” rebar & all-thread welded the last 9” or so. Just a flat washer & nut into “Birds Mouth” cut makes them flush. We are on a corner property and the back concrete driveway slopes to the middle. To keep dogs from going under, I used 4 butt hinges and added structure, but the bottom 1” X 6” board was matched using dividers, cut and hinged to swing up. A small notch to keep the 1” nylon strap like chin strap for helmets, screwed on front and tops extra long, folded and sewn. Place two screws at open & one at close. Phillips screwdriver heated just melted nice holes to hold open when in use, one low to put strap home when down. Plus extra loop makes easy grab. Torch & vise allowed to bend 1” X 1/4” flat bar strap to lag bolt into rail. 3 on top with pivot, same on bottom and hold with any wind. Can’t open from outside but I installed digital door locks on all 3 exterior doors. Each gate can be different but being able adjust for any sag worth it. We had “Bridge Planks” for holding pen for cattle & horses. We bought or barrow a seed bull of the “Bhrama” breed. It took its horns and lifted the entire gate off 4 eyelet hinges on a single 12 foot gate and tossed it. It was so heavy, that after three days of jacks, levers & fulcrums, used a tractor a chain to lift it in place. Each of the 5 guys took turns guessing the gate was 1,200 lbs to 1,600 lbs. Regardless, that was amazing strength! Nice job on gate. Are you painting the “X” frames white to match?
@@nicthespic3023 It is cool. Like re-bar (solid metal bar stock w/bumps for concrete to grab onto. Weld a length of threaded stock and tighten with a nut. Installed at top corner (hinge end) and lower corner on the other end. It lifts the gate. Adds strength. Birds mouth, is a simple pair of cuts on the side or end of a board, looks like the mouth of bird when open. You learn a lot on a farm 20+ years before the internet. Thank you kindly. Good video. However, if you live in Florida, or any other hurricane prone location. I would HIGHLY suggest, installing your top lag bolts pointed down. This locked the gates to the posts, otherwise you might find your gates at the neighbors house one day. Also, using a laser lever to sight the lag bolts locations its great method to use, from one hinge post to the other.
Nice job. Thx! I’ve decided to never sink wood posts into concrete. Instead, I use angle iron on two (or $four) corners and then bolt my post to that above ground. 2’ of steel in concrete below and 2’ above. The wood never touches moist dirt and will therefore last longer. Drill holes in the metal, and attach the post with lag bolt to metal before dropping into concrete to get level as it sets up. The post is unwieldy like on stilts before dropping hole, but sets up nice. Seal bottom of post end grain to prevent wicking and post sits at ground level with nobody knowing the trick. Paint metal accent black and it looks classy.
Great video! I came across this video after looking for ideas about building a gate. I never new this product was out there. I needed a gate to access my back yard for my truck and this is perfect.
What stain is used on the dark chocolate/black pre existing fence ? I'm plotting my first gate build, gonna use 4x6 gate support and 4x4 for fence portion, located in Florida as well.
Built my wood fence 21 years ago and it's still up I put gravel below each 4x4 so the water would drain away from the 4x4 also before I installed mine I dried the boards by laying them in my driveway letting the sun slowly dry them and panted everything going into the dirt.
Another post preservative method is to drill an angled hole into the post just above ground level. Pour your used motor oil into the hole. It'll soak into the wood. Just be sensible about hole size to post size. You are removing structure by drilling, but all posts work together so it not a huge concern.
Fantastic work fellow DYI er ! I know you are a pretty sharp guy from your directing ! The average guy watching your video could easily end with corner posts out of plum considering you never mention bracing while cement cures ! Also I know you used the metal gate kit but your primary board ( the one not cut in two ) on your cross brace needs to be installed from the unsupported top side of gate to the lower hinge spot ! If done prior to installing pickets fence gate will not sag afterwards ! A security step I’ve taken using the the screw type hinge is to reverse the top screw down as your fence can be lifted right off and taken away in the middle of the nite the way it was installed in the video ! All in all I enjoy your videos and am a subscriber and have been known to share sometimes ! I’m just a 74yr young handyman up here in the Last Frontier ! Best of luck YouTubing !
Yes on cross brace needs to be installed from the unsupported top side of gate to the lower hinge spot ! And I saw a video that shows you don't want to go pass 45 degrees on the cross support brace. Anybody building a gate might want to look that up.
Me again ,lol im at my finnal stages of prep work im almost ready to start my fence i just had few more details to iron out ,so how tall are your 4x4 above ground and at what hight are your 2x4 stringers set at so i know when i measure the 15 inch mark for the hinges i know where to start from ,to be exact you measured 15 inches from the middle ringer going up and down for the hinges how far is that middle ringer 2x4 from bottom or top of the 4x4 the center of it

THE HINGE SET I BOUGHT WAS MISSING SOME SCREWS & BOLTS SO I BOUGHT LAG BOLTS TO SCREW INTO THE 2X4'S & 4X4'S.
Using screw is very beneficial especially if you need to take a section down to put in a shed. I literally just did a 389' privacy fence for a client using 3&1/2" screws for the 2x4's and 1&5/8" screw for the pickets. Yeah five 5lb (25lbs) boxes of 1&5/8" screws and 15lbs of 3&1/2" screws. My clients fence will last for many more years than being nailed.

What is keeping you from lifting that gate straight up off of those hinges since they are both facing up. I always thought one should face up and the other face down.

Great vid. Can you give me a little more info on the 4X4 posts on either side for the gate Firest are they 4x4 or 6x6. How wide a hole did you make and it appears you used 2x4s attached to the 4x4's in the hole. Is that correct? do they extend down 24" along with the post? did you only put the extra wood on 2 sides?
Choose a neighborhood where you don’t have to worry about that. If that’s the only thing stopping someone, they would have a much easier time just popping a couple boards off or a panel. Much easier and lighter. But seriously tho… not a bad idea

Anybody can build this. You just want to hire the labor. You stand there and tell them what to do every inch of the way. You get the gate you want with the labor you have.
Excellent video for building a gate. I needed this info for building my 10 foot double gate. Hope to use 8 foot 2 3/8 metal posts instead of 4 X 4s. It will be a learning process and fun!!
Mr. Anlauf, I'd like to see how you are going to attach the metal frame to the metal posts using the lag-style pins. I know they can attach to the 4x4s because the pins screw on Into the wood, but on metal posts? Let us know.
Clamp and adjustable hinge pair for chain link metal post. I'm going to use this instead of the wood screws that come with the Adjust- A-Gate hardware.
Nice Gate and Concept, but you can only open the gate from the inside with all the hardware at the bottom. Unless you leave the extra cane bolt and latch undone. But it is a very well constructed gate.
Great Vid - thanks! In researching gate builds - building a 10" one myself - I've seen many negative comments about the Adjust A Gate product. As you pointed out, the hardware (screws) that come with the gate are junk so it's recommended to purchase ones at your local home improvement store. I've also seen several posts / pictures showing this gate frame rusting after just a couple of years - lots of rust to the point that a new gate was needed. Looks like yours has only been up a few months but wondering if you had any previous Adjust A Gate builds and how they were fairing regarding the rust issue?
No rust. I have 4 others on my property. The oldest is 7 years and it’s Florida. Loads of rain and humidity. Zero rust. I did stain my frame when the fences were stained and the stain acts like a paint in a way so maybe that is preserving it? Nevertheless no rust and still as good as the day I put them in.
I noticed that you opened the gate inward when finished. Are you able to open it outward, toward the street? I know you could before you screwed the pickets on. Just wondering if you could still open it outward with the pickets now installed. Thanks.
I just installed a single adjust a gate and I’m getting ready to tackle the double. My question is, did you screw the gate together withe the 2x4’s before you hung it? It just seems to be a real pain trying to install the 2x4’s onto the single swinging arm. Thanks for the video, I admire your perfection, and I’m jealous of your backyard!
Dude this is awesome and just what I was looking for. Since doing this gate have you experienced any issues with it? I've been looking at the Adjust-A-Gates and noticed they have a 3 rail system vice the 2 I might try out for extra stability.

Awesome video man! I'm going to try to make a gate almost identical to this. Any tips for having to jackhammer through Concrete? My gate is basically going over a driveway. Do you think I'd still have to make such large holes for my posts to get so much concrete poured in? Or are there any tricks you can share for that? I was hoping I could minimize the size of the holes to put in my driveway. Thanks!

That part is variable. Not a science. Don’t exceed a 12’ span and you’ll be ok. You custom build and adjust the gate width by dividing your total span in half once they’re cured in the ground. Then subtract about an inch on each to ensure they don’t collide.
This was a great video and I love these gates!!! I have used several of these in the past. My only question is this...I wish you would have shown the gates closed from the street side. I don’t see any way that the outside gates are flush with the rest of the fence. I have always had to add an additional 2X4 to the framing before I put the pickets on so it’s flush on the finished side which in your case, the street side. Is it flush on that side?? Hey, Ill try to make this my last comment:) but I finally installed my double gate yesterday but mine is outward swinging which has made it crazy hard to skin. Curious about a couple things; did you apply 2 sets of skins in a staggered pattern? I noticed you have no gaps at all like a regular fence board. Curious how u did that. Also is that 1x4 PT for your added trim? I have to do that too in order to simply have more wood to latch onto. Oh lastly, approx; how big of space between both gates did u end up with? I have a full inch and it seems a bit much!!! sorry for all the questions
Yes, you can use this gate with vinyl. The vinyl pickets need to anchor to solid structure. The gate will only be as good as the structure behind it. My gate is skinned with composite decking. It's structure is 2x pressure treated lumber.

It’ll swing out just fine. Just don’t put trim on the outside of the fence

Great vid. Can you give me a little more info on the 4X4 posts on either side for the gate Firest are they 4x4 or 6x6. How wide a hole did you make and it appears you used 2x4s attached to the 4x4's in the hole. Is that correct? do they extend down 24" along with the post? did you only put the extra wood on 2 sides?
Turn your top hinge down ward to lock it in, so no one can lift your gate up and take it off.
Choose a neighborhood where you don’t have to worry about that. If that’s the only thing stopping someone, they would have a much easier time just popping a couple boards off or a panel. Much easier and lighter. But seriously tho… not a bad idea

Anybody can build this. You just want to hire the labor. You stand there and tell them what to do every inch of the way. You get the gate you want with the labor you have.

How long is each gate frame? Looks like you're at the limit of 72' inch for each frame.... any problems with going out the full 6 feet of gate frame?

Mr. Anlauf, I'd like to see how you are going to attach the metal frame to the metal posts using the lag-style pins. I know they can attach to the 4x4s because the pins screw on Into the wood, but on metal posts? Let us know.
Clamp and adjustable hinge pair for chain link metal post. I'm going to use this instead of the wood screws that come with the Adjust- A-Gate hardware.

Nice Gate and Concept, but you can only open the gate from the inside with all the hardware at the bottom. Unless you leave the extra cane bolt and latch undone. But it is a very well constructed gate.
That’s the point for security here. Don’t want anyone opening it up from the outside round these parts.

Great Vid - thanks! In researching gate builds - building a 10" one myself - I've seen many negative comments about the Adjust A Gate product. As you pointed out, the hardware (screws) that come with the gate are junk so it's recommended to purchase ones at your local home improvement store. I've also seen several posts / pictures showing this gate frame rusting after just a couple of years - lots of rust to the point that a new gate was needed. Looks like yours has only been up a few months but wondering if you had any previous Adjust A Gate builds and how they were fairing regarding the rust issue?
No rust. I have 4 others on my property. The oldest is 7 years and it’s Florida. Loads of rain and humidity. Zero rust. I did stain my frame when the fences were stained and the stain acts like a paint in a way so maybe that is preserving it? Nevertheless no rust and still as good as the day I put them in.
Fix It Now I used the Adjust A Gate on a double 13’ opening over 10 years ago and it has held up great. No rust (I’m in Virginia) and no sagging.

I noticed that you opened the gate inward when finished. Are you able to open it outward, toward the street? I know you could before you screwed the pickets on. Just wondering if you could still open it outward with the pickets now installed. Thanks.
Yes but I added trim to the top and bottom on the outside so it can only open inward at that point.
I just installed a single adjust a gate and I’m getting ready to tackle the double. My question is, did you screw the gate together withe the 2x4’s before you hung it? It just seems to be a real pain trying to install the 2x4’s onto the single swinging arm. Thanks for the video, I admire your perfection, and I’m jealous of your backyard!

Dude this is awesome and just what I was looking for. Since doing this gate have you experienced any issues with it? I've been looking at the Adjust-A-Gates and noticed they have a 3 rail system vice the 2 I might try out for extra stability.
Go with the 3 rail. These sagged about 1 inch since I installed

I noticed your top hinge pin is facing up, but the instructions say to face it down. Was this on purpose, does it work better than what they recommend?
Yes. I faced mine up so I can pull the gates if need be. Flip yours if you desire.

Do you think I'd still have to make such large holes for my posts to get so much concrete poured in? Or are there any tricks you can share for that? I was hoping I could minimize the size of the holes to put in my driveway. Thanks!

If I am following the video direction exactly, how much space did you leave between your posts? I've looked in the comments but can't find that answer.
That part is variable. Not a science. Don’t exceed a 12’ span and you’ll be ok. You custom build and adjust the gate width by dividing your total span in half once they’re cured in the ground. Then subtract about an inch on each to ensure they don’t collide.
This was a great video and I love these gates!!! I have used several of these in the past. My only question is this...I wish you would have shown the gates closed from the street side. I don’t see any way that the outside gates are flush with the rest of the fence. I have always had to add an additional 2X4 to the framing before I put the pickets on so it’s flush on the finished side which in your case, the street side. Is it flush on that side?? Yes 2 kits, some concrete bags, handful of screws, boards, 2x4’s. Should be good to go.
Hey, Ill try to make this my last comment:) but I finally installed my double gate yesterday but mine is outward swinging which has made it crazy hard to skin. Curious about a couple things; did you apply 2 sets of skins in a staggered pattern? I noticed you have no gaps at all like a regular fence board. Curious how u did that. Also is that 1x4 PT for your added trim? I have to do that too in order to simply have more wood to latch onto. Oh lastly, approx; how big of space between both gates did u end up with? I have a full inch and it seems a bit much!!! sorry for all the questions

Yes, you can use this gate with vinyl. The vinyl pickets need to anchor to solid structure. The gate will only be as good as the structure behind it. My gate is skinned with composite decking. It's structure is 2x pressure treated lumber.
