Spearfishing The Undesirables Ep 6 Cobbler Estuary Catfish

  • Spearfishing Estuary Cobbler or Estuary Catfish is definite undesirable that I always see spearfishing around Sydney and NSW but have always left them. But in this Catch and Cook I discover that these guys are...
I spearfishing in Sydney and the surrounding areas of Australia. The whole purpose of the Undesirables Series is to try and tempt people into eating different fish and break away from the traditional attitude that there's only 5-6 good eating fish in Australia. If we ate a more varied selection of fish from the ocean there wouldn't be massive pressures on particular stocks. So eating a greater variety of fish will make our spearfishing more sustainable.
I can't believe this fish ended up spiking me with its venomous spine but hey ho that's part of the learning process. As I type this nearly 2 weeks on from the spike I am pain free but it definitely took about a week to settle down.
Special thanks to Director Christine for helping get the angles and fit my head into shot :D

All fish were of legal size and were speared for consumption, I have a NSW Fishing Licence and abide by catch size limits, daily takes and no fish zones. Over the past 5 years now I have made the commitment to no longer buy fish, so I only eat the fish i catch. Spearfishing is the most sustainable form of fishing on the planet, it is also the most environmentally friendly form of fishing.

This is actually a super prised fish in WA, and we have more prised fish than most places haha, they are higher on most people's lists as an eating fish than even snapper over here. Quite common here too even landbased (as in its fairly common to see them swimming right on the shorelines), and so prised infact they were almost wiped out completely from systems closer to Perth of which have just come off decade long protection bans for them.
Just a quick tip, the spines are actually really weak and once landed if you have some pliers or something they are easily twisted and broken off, I'm yet to take a spike yet as I always make sure to do this. Awesome vid man, keen for the next 🤙

Bro thats awesome infomation, thanks for sharing i had no idea!
Looks like WA has kept this secret quite most people on the East Coast dont know what it is.
Awesome tip with the pliers ill be sure to do this next time.

A shot through the top of the skull of that cobbler would've had him limp and safer to handle. Takes practice to get it right most of the time. Subbed and liked.

@@WetMammal Make sure you wipe most of that slime off with paper towels next time. That can taint the flesh, and add bacteria to your fillets.

If you are stung by a cobbler, the best method of treatment is to put the wound in hot water. It neutralises the proteins in the venom.

Great video. Great eating. I was spiked through the centre of my palm at the start of a dive, 2 hours of heavy, throbbing pain, then slowly goes. Next day almost all gone.
I learnt once the fish is dead, you can pinch the 2-3cm spines and break them off without too much effort. They won’t spike you then.
