Disney! Their bad at making live action movies like A Wrinkle In Time, The Nutcracker and the four realms, etc. Disney messed up big time with buying 20th Century Fox. I really don’t like Disney that much. I think that after Inside Out, Pixar lost its magic because I don’t feel like the other Pixar films. The MCU are hit or miss and Star Wars is pure trash with the new trilogy. The Force Awakens is just like A New Hope but add the existing characters and have new characters.

    From the book:
[Artemis] every inch the gracious host, albeit a sinister, evil, intelligent, and determined one.
[Artemis had] made a joke. Now there's something that didn't happen everyday.
Artemis saw the pain in the creature's eyes... and for a moment he experienced misgivings. Then the moment passed and he was himself again.
Casting call for the movie: Artemis is warm-hearted and has a great sense of humour; he has fun in whatever situation he is in and loves life.
    WTF.

The reason why these movies struggle is because when someone writes a book, they use imagination, ingenuity, and smarts. But these execs only see either street cred, or dollar signs. They need to get people who know their material to come in and do these amazing stories the right way the first time.

    • @lo4tr

The biggest problem is that the adaptors don't have faith that certain aspects would work. Artemis Fowl's biggest hurdle was honestly convincing focus testers that a child protagonist could be a villain character. From there, it's easy to see the chain of thought.
Well let's combine books, so we can have Artemis' character from later in the series when he has grown to be more of an anti-hero instead of a villain. Since we're combining books, we have to shorten other character arcs, like Roots and Holly's. Since we have to shorten those arcs, let's make Root female so we can say we have the same level of female representation. While we're at it, we can take Butler and make him black to get further PC points.

The less people working on something, or the less who actually make decisions the more it can be what it needs to be and the more you can connect with it. The less creators the more harmony or dissonance you feel. If you read a book it's generally coming from one person so if it's amazing you can praise that person and feel connected but if it's awful you feel a sort of horror that's not really quite the same with huge studios. They don't want one person being in charge because it might end up hurting the company if they make a "bad" decision.

Chuck Sta. Maria I completely agree. Any “diversity/inclusion” just undermined those that were already written. Biggest example: Root being female. It abolishes Holly’s struggle to be one of the few, maybe even the only, female LEP. That’s a huge part of Holly’s arc and struggles but by making Root female you no longer see it.

Actually, when you examine the first 20 minutes closely it becomes evident that the film did originally stick with the book plot and depiction, and Artemis kidnapped Holly just for the Fairy Gold and not for the noble cause of rescuing his father. It becomes evident because close examination reveals extensive use of ADR and bizarre editing in order to remove the word "gold" and replace it with "Aculos". Yes, that's the reason they seemed to be wearing that word out in the first half hour. This is most evident when Arty says a line straight out of the books; when Root, in negotiation asks where she is supposed to find the Aculos (dubbed over the original word "gold"), he responds "From the pot at the end of the rainbow" which as anyone knows is where the gold is, and would make no sense that Fowl would suggest an item he'd never previously heard of was to be found there. In fact, catching all the times the movie substitutes "gold" with "Aculos" is more fun than the movie itself; there must be at least twenty such occasions in the first 20-30 minutes of the movie. My personal favourite is Roots' balcony address to the LEP ranks; for one substitution they simply cut to the back of her head for about a second (the abrupt and brief cuts are a handy clue to the presence of these inserts), and another time they simply put an unnecessarily big blue glowy sparkly neon fairy microphone obscuring her mouth. Very inventive.
So yes, clearly the initial script _did_ portray Fowl as a criminal as in the books. But just as self-evidently, at some point someone's arsehole went, and they removed his criminal aspect, thus making the character just someone with the same name as the Artemis Fowl of the book series, but no other real connection. And of course it meant that had the movie not sucked so hard in all other aspects and sequels were a possibility, they'd have left themselves with nowhere to go, no journey for Arty to take, no character development - a potential seven film series bombed out from the very inception! What _were_ Disney thinking??!

  • @gavinscience4146
    @gavinscience4146 4 ปีที่แล้ว +293

I’ve commented this on other videos, and I will say it again: Bro I can’t be the only one to think that Disney both slacked and rushed. Opals character wasn’t explained at all, so we have no idea why (spoilers) Artemis’ dad was kidnapped tbh. There wasn’t really a story of good vs evil, as the trailer made me think that it was the goblins vs the fairies (because of the fire breathing scene). If anything, the movie was just “kid helps fairies find something in his own house”. The trailer made it seem fantastical, but it was like Disney couldn’t decide between a kids movie and an actually interesting movie, not hitting either at all but hitting in between. This movie could have been a lot better than Disney had created it to be.

Beating a chess master in five moves is still a more accurate story than this pile of flaming garbage. In a normal movie, that would have been a glaring inaccuracy. In this movie, it ranged somewhere between not worth mentioning, and a refreshing glass of water. this is like when you get invited to a kid's birthday party, and Satan bursts into the room, and people forget to mention that it wasn't actually on the kid's birthday. The thing about chess moves was simply wrong. The rest of the movie was hellishly atrocious, nauseating, and physically painful.

Some of them have normal modern Irish accents. Some of them are trying to sound like batman.

I haven't watched the movie, but Artemis sounds about as intimidating as a sandwich. In the books he was like a powerful adult while here he's just some normal-ass kid.

Take a shot every time you say "Wait, that's ___?"
    Wait, that's Root?
    Wait, that's Foaly?
    Wait, _that's_ Butler?
    Wait, that's Holly?
Wait, that's Mul...well, to be fair, who else were they gonna cast in 2020?

You literally posted this vid RIGHT after i was done watching it. And this movie had me confused. It felt like it was over before any plot played out.

All I'm gonna say, is that I read these books when I was in Jr high and I loved them, I spent the entire year reading this series over and over again. Then I see this thing and it really breaks my heart. They had such a huge chance to turn this into a credible long running movie series and give proper homage and work with the actual story line, but instead they just shoehorn it together to make money off a tv show. This is giving me flashbacks to the Percy Jackson and Divergent debacle series. Disney!! For the love of all that is holy, cancel this pile of steaming hot crap and make a proper film series!!

In my head, I always pictured Butler as a very Hagrid-like presentation.
