100%. If nothing else Anya Taylor-Joy as Magik was awesome to watch, and I think her character development was pretty cool. I could totally believe the reason the way she was. Anya is a great actress anyways, The Witch was a badass movie if your into slow burn light horror movies. Yeah it totally sucks that she likely won’t be able to play that again especially since her performance was probably the strongest in the entire movie
As an artist it breaks my heart to see censorship, streaming rights, money and other tangible obstacles get in the way of creative freedom. You can tell the directors really wanted to make something cool but all the red tape turned it into something lack-luster. I hope they're able to come back from this because the whole concept is really cool
Exactly, like they stopped doing 'The GIfted' and that was a good show, but I think that The New Mutants would have been a good series instead of the movie route. It felt like not only it was unfinished, but it had more stories to tell, like 'The Gifted' had a lot of stories to tell but left it on a cliffhanger.

Do you know of any other cool movie that does what Breakfast Club does? I get why they are so fascinated by it. It's such a low budget, simple concept made fun. It's a movie where nothing happens, where you just have characters talking. And it's so good (except the ending). It is a fascinating movie. There's an Argentinian movie, "Kriptonita", that does the same setup with superheroes instead of teens, but I would love to find more examples.

I actually watched this movie in cinema without knowing anything about it. Im not a marvel fan, I dont even care about the Avengers, but now im sad that there probably wont be any sequels to this.
Disney didn't "goof up" New Mutants, Fox did that LONG before they were bought. They thought about reshooting because of the tone (and ended up keeping the movie as is, so it was always a pure Fox movie) and then kept changing the dates themselves, plus having Boone do some extremely questionable things with these characters. The only thing Disney goofed up on was not not dumping on streaming, but given Fox's deal with Time Warner pre-acquisition, it would be on HBO Max instead of Hulu for the first few months.
I even doubt Disney wants this movie because even the fox didn’t know what to do with the movie. They just contractually had to release in theaters. After the HBO contract is over they’ll probably dump it on Hulu/hotstar and never talk about it again.
If you watch all the trailers all of the shot were on the movie except for the shot where the Doctor is looking down with the scars blood on her face and the wall one
I was just generally confused when i looked up Magik and it said that she was the younger sister of Colossus and that he was very protective of her, yet the movie stems off that fact that there is no one looking for these kids, but if Magik meant that much to Colossus, wouldn’t he be actively searching for her??
I saw this movie in theatre and my major peeve was that Dani didn't talk like a person, more like a robot reading plot lines. Also the romance plot between her and Rahne was so obvious to me from the moment in the clocktower. I also predicted a line in of their later romantic scenes.
They weren't going to have Adam warlock. They were going to have warlock the sentient nano tech alien of the falanx. He was a member of the new mutants.

I'm French so usualy the films I watches are dubbed and nobody has any accents anymore. That might be why I gave him a pass. I can see or rather hear how the actor struggled with it though

I’ve noticed that out of the people I’m subscribed to who has ever discussed this movie (for all four damn years until it’s release) there have been exactly zero for creators that mention the blatant and obvious whitewashing. They’ll edit in the graphics of Cecilia Reyes from the comics and the casting choice and not say a damn thing. The director whitewashed half the cast and hardly anyone cared. He even tried that bullshit with “the most talented actor got the role” only for it to come out that he hardly screened for Afro-Brazilian (Roberto) and Afro-Puerto Rican (Cecilia Reyes) actors. Hell, Rosario Dawson was almost Dr Reyes but they clearly didn’t even try for an accurate replacement when she couldn’t do it. There is no shortage of Black actors from Latin America. Also, it’s a really bad look when the one non-white passing Cheyenne character is played by Blu Hunt (whose white-passing indigenous-ness is on full display with the blatant whitewashing of other characters), and the director turning around to say “no one else that could faithfully portray the character was talented enough for it”

If I can squint and everyone's shade looks the exact same even tho there are so many different ethnicities, there is a problem. Dude, FOX messed up New Mutants. Disney acquired it when they bought FOX out. I don’t think there was anything could be done to save this dumpster fire of a movie. It had potential, but it failed to blossom into something decent. The actors themselves really carried this movie, which really made up for the writing/script deficiencies.
10:36 Ryan Reynolds decided to make Once Upon a Deadpool as a joke before he even knew that the Mouse was sweeping up the Fox. It had nothing to do with "censorship," China didn't even like the new version of the movie, and it's already been confirmed that Deadpool 3 will be the first R-rated movie in the MCU whenever they actually decide to do it.
All Disney did was release this movie. They didn’t even reshoot anything. Fox cut the budget and the film was hit with so many delays that dumping the blame on Disney just seems disingenuous.
Actually Disney was responsible for the stop in shooting towards the end, and 2 years of delays till they finally gave them the green light to finish up in post production. If it wasn't for Disney hitting the pause button this movie would have been out in March 2018.

I agree it’s very bitter sweet that in order for the X-men to merge with the avengers, everything had to cease because it’s not “disneyfied”. On one hand, it’s like the characters are so interesting it’s hard to leave them out of the mcu. But, man, to watch the franchise for twenty years for it to end like this is just disappointing. I will say it’ll be interesting to see if Disney actually plays into the whole oppressive undertone of X-men or if that’s not Disney friendly enough.

The one thing I did like about this was the special effects. The stuff with Magik was pretty cool lookin and so was demon bear. I love DB. I’ve always wanted a DB tattoo from some of the amazing artwork in the comics. I’ve always had a bear phobia. So yeah it resonated with me
On top of that principal filming had wrapped up long before Disney queried Fox meaning they had nothing to do with the movies failure. People just want an excuse to hate on Disney for what they did to Star Wars whether it’s deserved or not and in this case Disney doesn’t deserve any of the hate.

@@PotentialThall the bear being a manifestation of her powers isn't a bad thing on it's own but damn they used it badly. The bear's defeat could've been more impactfull and rewarding for us if it actually meant something more instead of just a rampaging fear projection. They hinted at it coming to her rescue in the end when it appeared when the doctor tried to suicide her (makes sense since it's essentially her own powers) but it attacks her in the end. I would've make more sense for it to be a manifestation of her uncontrolled powers appearing when she's distressed and lashing out on everything and anything but her and eventually when she woke up and faced it, the bear would've faded away, revelling a shadowy reflection of herself as she was no lonber affraid nor in need of protection (or whatever the bear saw as protection) and she can now be in controle. Then the shade would fade.
Cheesy isn't wrong by itself but they should've made it feel deserved ! Not just a quick ending to the film equivalent of a half-hearted quicky in a back alley !

I agree romance doesn't have to be in every movie, but in this one it made sense to have. Because they needed to have really deep relationship and romantic one was easy to explain in such short run time.

It seems bizarre to center this video on the Disney merger considering how much of the going-wrong seems to have happened while Fox was still in control, including the uneven tonality and genre, regardless of the marketing that came later. This revisionism of Fox as some indie studio that let the X-Men franchise live its best creative life, as though it wasn’t directly responsible for the many, many years of mediocrity that surrounded the occasional high points, is equally bizarre. Not to mention that we wouldn’t be having a conversation about monopolies re: different properties that fall under the Marvel umbrella if Marvel hadn’t sold them off to different studios in the first place. Some interesting things came out of what was originally move of financial desperation, but by the end of the Fox run, who was calling for more of what they had to offer of the X-Men, aside from edgier stuff like Logan or Deadpool? I’m not gonna defend the many bad decisions that have happened on Disney’s watch-the way they let the latest Star Wars trilogy play out still makes no sense to me, and I really, really dislike the trend of live-action versions of their animated movies-but one place they’ve clearly succeeded is with Marvel Studios, so I’m not mad that something like X-Men will be in more capable hands because of that.

The director reason for such change is lazy imo, He could have just said he chose another iteration of Da Costa.

Marvel started to shift into the horror aspect, the new strange movie multiverse of madness they did the horror aspect I think marvel needs to go back to the new mutants or Disney or who every owns it and lean into that aspect. there is a lot more they could have done wit this. i loved the atmosphere and the character while being underdeveloped are intriging. but it would have been much bigger if it was a TV show. maybe spend an episode on each character. eventually leading to them coping with an outside that hates mutants.

The concept from the beginning was intriguing. When I first heard and saw what they planned on doing, this looked incredible. But all the production shuffling leaves us with a lackluster result and promises of what could've been. Truly saddening.
This was fox, they had been making the movie and were essentially done with it when the deal started, so just like Phoenix, Disney didn’t mess with any of those last movies that would be 100% fox
I feel the issue was that the ending and the villain wasn’t “big enough” like I was fine with the doctor but I feel like if they had a bigger buget they could have included a much bigger, heavy duty, massively insane villain. I think this would have been a much more impactful ending and bad ass battle.
While I'm a huge X-Men fan, I'm glad there won't be any more "FoX-Men" movies. They had about 2 decades to come up w/ a great cohesive, far-reaching story, but they didn't. Aside from Fox's poor handling of some of the most popular & beloved characters in comics, their plots were lacking, & the continuity from 1 movie to the next was essentially nonexistent. If Disney did so well w/ the "leftovers" (i.e. Avengers, & Guardians), I can't wait to see what they do w/ a property as great as the X-men (& FF). I just hope they don't do as much "whitewashing", and/or inexplicable killing of black characters as Fox.

DIsney screwed up a lot of things (star wars 👀) but the new mutants is 21st century Fox's fault. Fox brought in 4 writers at various stages of production to mess with director/writers vision cause they didn't like his idea for the new mutants.
Technically this isn’t a Disney film at all. This is Fox studio’s last X-men movie before it’s being rebooted finally by Disney since Disney bought Fox studios with a billion dollar deal. Disney sold X-men and Fantastic 4 in the 90s so that they didn’t go bankrupt and proceeded to buy them back last year.
Accurate title of the video: “How Disney who acquired a movie that was in limbo (pun intended) for 3 years before acquiring the rights to the comic franchise and had no say so, control, input, whatsoever gets all the blame since they decided to release it “goofed” the New Mutants Movie”. The New Mutants is not done by Disney, it was made by 20th Century Fox. Although Fox is now a part of the Disney corporation, it [The New Mutants] was a movie which was put into production before Disney brought Fox and was given permission to finish the original Fox mutant timeline, separate from the Disney Marvel movies.
Yeah,they waited YEARS after it was filmed to release New Mutants....in 2020. They could have NOT released it. I'd originally assumed that neither this film nor Dark Phoenix would actually be released. At very least not in theaters. And they BOTH eventually got a theatrical release. What,is it tax-deductible for a studio when a film bombs or something!? Also......Mr. 'Splain.......Charles Xavier didn't attend the finest Ivy League universities to be referred to as MISTER Xavier.
The smiley face monsters chasing them look like a rip off of Buffy’s “the Gentlemen” episode. And the ending to was a cross of moana and Frozen Elsa’s (Dany) fear of her ice powers (the bear) getting out of control & Moana (Dany) figuring out Taka (the bear) was really Tafiti without her heart (the bear necklace)
I wouldn't say carried... don't get me wrong she did a great job and I fucking love her portraying of the character so much I literally can't see anyone else in her place but the character was a bit annoying in the beginning. And she didn't do much except being a bitch for a whole 2/3 of the movie. Maybe 1.

I just feel like the movie didn't really do justice on her and the other characters that are indeed amazing and it saddens me that we won't see more of them. At least those incarnations of them... Frankly even though it let me down, there were still many things great with it, enough to make me like it and hate it at the same for not being better. But hey that's what imagination's for !

I even doubt Disney wants this movie because even the fox didn’t know what to do with the movie. They just contractually had to release in theaters. After the HBO contract is over they’ll probably dump it on Hulu/hotstar and never talk about it again.

I was just generally confused when i looked up Magik and it said that she was the younger sister of Colossus and that he was very protective of her, yet the movie stems off that fact that there is no one looking for these kids, but if Magik meant that much to Colossus, wouldn’t he be actively searching for her??
In the early 90's when she died from the 'Legacy virus' ,Colossus actually left The X-Men. He was messed up for a long time. He was very close to her.

I saw this movie in theatre and my major peeve was that Dani didn't talk like a person, more like a robot reading plot lines. Also the romance plot between her and Rahne was so obvious to me from the moment in the clocktower. I also predicted a line in of their later romantic scenes.

I’ve noticed that out of the people I’m subscribed to who has ever discussed this movie (for all four damn years until it’s release) there have been exactly zero for creators that mention the blatant and obvious whitewashing.
They’ll edit in the graphics of Cecilia Reyes from the comics and the casting choice and not say a damn thing.
The director whitewashed half the cast and hardly anyone cared. He even tried that bullshit with “the most talented actor got the role” only for it to come out that he hardly screened for Afro-Brazilian (Roberto) and Afro-Puerto Rican (Cecilia Reyes) actors. Hell, Rosario Dawson was almost Dr Reyes but they clearly didn’t even try for an accurate replacement when she couldn’t do it.
There is no shortage of Black actors from Latin America. Also, it’s a really bad look when the one non-white passing Cheyenne character is played by Blu Hunt (whose white-passing indigenous-ness is on full display with the blatant whitewashing of other characters), and the director turning around to say “no one else that could faithfully portray the character was talented enough for it”

If I can squint and everyone's shade looks the exact same even tho there are so many different ethnicities, there is a problem. Dude, FOX messed up New Mutants. Disney acquired it when they bought FOX out. I don’t think there was anything could be done to save this dumpster fire of a movie. It had potential, but it failed to blossom into something decent. The actors themselves really carried this movie, which really made up for the writing/script deficiencies.

10:36 Ryan Reynolds decided to make Once Upon a Deadpool as a joke before he even knew that the Mouse was sweeping up the Fox. It had nothing to do with "censorship," China didn't even like the new version of the movie, and it's already been confirmed that Deadpool 3 will be the first R-rated movie in the MCU whenever they actually decide to do it.
All Disney did was release this movie. They didn’t even reshoot anything. Fox cut the budget and the film was hit with so many delays that dumping the blame on Disney just seems disingenuous.
Actually Disney was responsible for the stop in shooting towards the end, and 2 years of delays till they finally gave them the green light to finish up in post production. If it wasn't for Disney hitting the pause button this movie would have been out in March 2018.

I agree it’s very bitter sweet that in order for the X-men to merge with the avengers, everything had to cease because it’s not “disneyfied”. On one hand, it’s like the characters are so interesting it’s hard to leave them out of the mcu. But, man, to watch the franchise for twenty years for it to end like this is just disappointing. I will say it’ll be interesting to see if Disney actually plays into the whole oppressive undertone of X-men or if that’s not Disney friendly enough.

@@PotentialThall the bear being a manifestation of her powers isn't a bad thing on it's own but damn they used it badly. The bear's defeat could've been more impactfull and rewarding for us if it actually meant something more instead of just a rampaging fear projection. They hinted at it coming to her rescue in the end when it appeared when the doctor tried to suicide her (makes sense since it's essentially her own powers) but it attacks her in the end. I would've make more sense for it to be a manifestation of her uncontrolled powers appearing when she's distressed and lashing out on everything and anything but her and eventually when she woke up and faced it, the bear would've faded away, revelling a shadowy reflection of herself as she was no lonber affraid nor in need of protection (or whatever the bear saw as protection) and she can now be in controle. Then the shade would fade.
Cheesy isn't wrong by itself but they should've made it feel deserved ! Not just a quick ending to the film equivalent of a half-hearted quicky in a back alley !

I agree romance doesn't have to be in every movie, but in this one it made sense to have. Because they needed to have really deep relationship and romantic one was easy to explain in such short run time.

It seems bizarre to center this video on the Disney merger considering how much of the going-wrong seems to have happened while Fox was still in control, including the uneven tonality and genre, regardless of the marketing that came later. This revisionism of Fox as some indie studio that let the X-Men franchise live its best creative life, as though it wasn’t directly responsible for the many, many years of mediocrity that surrounded the occasional high points, is equally bizarre.
Not to mention that we wouldn’t be having a conversation about monopolies re: different properties that fall under the Marvel umbrella if Marvel hadn’t sold them off to different studios in the first place. Some interesting things came out of what was originally move of financial desperation, but by the end of the Fox run, who was calling for more of what they had to offer of the X-Men, aside from edgier stuff like Logan or Deadpool?
I’m not gonna defend the many bad decisions that have happened on Disney’s watch-the way they let the latest Star Wars trilogy play out still makes no sense to me, and I really, really dislike the trend of live-action versions of their animated movies-but one place they’ve clearly succeeded is with Marvel Studios, so I’m not mad that something like X-Men will be in more capable hands because of that.

Marvel started to shift into the horror aspect, the new strange movie multiverse of madness they did the horror aspect I think marvel needs to go back to the new mutants or Disney or who every owns it and lean into that aspect. there is a lot more they could have done wit this. i loved the atmosphere and the character while being underdeveloped are intriging. but it would have been much bigger if it was a TV show.

The concept from the beginning was intriguing. When I first heard and saw what they planned on doing, this looked incredible. But all the production shuffling leaves us with a lackluster result and promises of what could've been. Truly saddening.
This was fox, they had been making the movie and were essentially done with it when the deal started, so just like Phoenix, Disney didn’t mess with any of those last movies that would be 100% fox
I feel the issue was that the ending and the villain wasn’t “big enough” like I was fine with the doctor but I feel like if they had a bigger buget they could have included a much bigger, heavy duty, massively insane villain. I think this would have been a much more impactful ending and bad ass battle.

While I'm a huge X-Men fan, I'm glad there won't be any more "FoX-Men" movies. They had about 2 decades to come up w/ a great cohesive, far-reaching story, but they didn't. Aside from Fox's poor handling of some of the most popular & beloved characters in comics, their plots were lacking, & the continuity from 1 movie to the next was essentially nonexistent.
If Disney did so well w/ the "leftovers" (i.e. Avengers, & Guardians), I can't wait to see what they do w/ a property as great as the X-men (& FF). I just hope they don't do as much "whitewashing", and/or inexplicable killing of black characters as Fox.

DIsney screwed up a lot of things (star wars 👀) but the new mutants is 21st century Fox's fault. Fox brought in 4 writers at various stages of production to mess with director/writers vision cause they didn't like his idea for the new mutants.
Technically this isn’t a Disney film at all. This is Fox studio’s last X-men movie before it’s being rebooted finally by Disney since Disney bought Fox studios with a billion dollar deal. Disney sold X-men and Fantastic 4 in the 90s so that they didn’t go bankrupt and proceeded to buy them back last year.
i hope they keep this cast of characters and integrate them, the cast is far too good to go to waste. at LEAST have anya taylor joy cameo in deadpool

The New Mutants is not done by Disney, it was made by 20th Century Fox. Although Fox is now a part of the Disney corporation, it [The New Mutants] was a movie which was put into production before Disney brought Fox and was given permission to finish the original Fox mutant timeline, separate from the Disney Marvel movies.

I'd originally assumed that neither this film nor Dark Phoenix would actually be released. At very least not in theaters. And they BOTH eventually got a theatrical release. I just feel like the movie didn't really do justice on her and the other characters that are indeed amazing and it saddens me that we won't see more of them. At least those incarnations of them...
