- Lenovo's put together quite the lovely, budget laptop. Even with the Ryzen 7 4800H and GTX 1660ti, this laptop costs just $1000 on Amazon! The Legion 5 is looking like one of my favorite Ryzen laptops of this year, but the year's not over yet. ;)

I just got the 5P in the uk (same as the 5, with a metal build rather then plastic, but no webcam).
I managed to get it with the Ryzen 7 4800H, and the Rtx 2060 - upgraded the ram to 3200 32gb, and a 1tb M.2, all for around £1200. Its a beast!
I believe the trackpad is Mylar, would prefer glass, but as plastics go its about the smoothest you can get Ideal for a trackpad.
Was waiting for the Hp 2060/4800H combo, but kind of glad I found this now.
I have disabled the all core boost on the 4800 and lowered the power draw of the 2060, in balanced mode (white led in the power button) its a great balance of temp/heat with very little noise.
I cant recommend the 5 series (and especially the 5p) highly enough!

What surprise me the most from legion 5 is its quiet mode doing a light task... it should be named silent mode instead

I owned this laptop but with GTX 1650 GPU and a 120Hz panel with 250 nit brightness and poor color accuracy. Honestly, it's a solid machine for what I do!
I don't really play intensive games a whole lot but it's a capable laptop for games I play!

Legion is overpriced in my country. I could get a 1660ti or 2060 for the same price that they offer a 1650..

yes but it is extremely overpriced in my country, which is why I am going for the Nitro 5

but would have liked to see those sound tests done in a cut-scene and you could talk over that instead of the real-time one which gets in the way a little

idk why ur legion and omen stress test are so hot. i saw other reviewer and it runs pretty cool
I'm running all hardware at maximum power draw with software designed to push the hardware to its limit. The purpose of the test is to see how the manufacturer handles high temperatures, not to simulate a real world load.
perhaps that power usage in idle is the keyboard lights, turn em off ;)

@@nn-qb1bp I purchased the i7 rtx 2060 kmen with the 300h screen. Returned it for the ryzen 7 144hz screen. The legiom screen was brighter and sharper, much happier with my legion , glad I returned the omen, even though the gpu is slower.
the sound installation of win 98, when appeared at 5:37 minutes, I remember it how if it was yesterday. JAJAJAJA

Very nice. Considering switching from a Intel 9750h laptop to this. My Intel laptop is so noisy even for basic tasks. How is the noise level for light to medium use?
Man these modern laptop CPUs seem to get get hotter than the 8770w i7 Extreme I used to have and that was a 60+ watt CPU.

How is this laptop praised for its thermals!? The AiDA64 stress test ran here shows CPU temps of 102°C at ~3600Mhz clock speed and it drops down to 76°C after ~9 minutes at a clock speed of ~2900Mhz as a result of thermal throttling...
For reference, I made the same stress test (Heaven for GPU + AIDA64 on CPU) on the heavily criticized Asus Tuf A17 and got a CPU temperature max of 96°C at 3600MHz and it stabilized at 86°C at 3400MHz after ~ 15 minutes.
Yes, the Legion 5 has a CPU temp of 76°C at ~2900MHz, whereas the Asus Tuf A17 run at a higher 86°C but at 3400MHz, which I think is acceptable, especially aimce this is a stress test and does not reflect daily use conditions.
just bought this beast with the i7 variant.. i must say.. as a person who never had this kind of machinery before, playing Dayz SA with ultra settings at 150fps blown me away, the last laptop i had was the ASUS x550DP and PS4, and I've never play games above 60 fps on some rig. :')
also, i wish there's a seamless between normal fully charged mode and the conservation mode, because when i charged it to full and change the mode back to conservation mode, the battery drains back to around 60% in 10 minutes and its kinda waste of power :

Is it recommended to train machine learning models with regards on the thermals? I'm really planning to buy this as my daily coding machine.
About the soft touch finish on the palm rest, would it dent and/or scuff easily? Does anyone have experience with this?
I am a bit afraid that it will wear off over time too. I have had a Cisco E4200 router with a soft touch finish, after some years the finish became sticky.

I doubt it would hold up terribly well to abuse. It'll probably get tacky over time unless you're diligent about keeping it clean.

What was the ambient temperature in the room while making the tests? Im surprised of how much tech reviewers forget to tell the ambient temperature, it is not the same if the room is at 20°C or 30°C, I live in a warm weather location (average temperature during the day of 32°C) and it matters a lot. the heat transfer physical phenomena depends on it.

It does not affect the temperature that much. Latent heat is generated from within the computer, and much of the components can be cooled with a basic cooling fan or fan mount.
I agree. My Dell G5 i7 10750h RTX 2070MQ is a fair bit cooler than it was in the summer and that's in the UK that doesn't have massive temperature differences. Its maybe 10 degrees cooler than it was a month or two ago.
@@demsimex lol that's nothing here in Puerto Rico where I live average day is easily above 32 C.
High ambient reduces overall thermal headroom as ambient is "as cool as it can be" for the heatsink. 10C difference can make a ton of different. Also for reference my ambient tends to be around 19-20C

An issue is the laptop seems to be flat on a surface which is not recommended.
Prop the laptop up and it will run several degrees cooler, add a cooling pad and you'll see lower temps still.
Laptops are intended to be used on a flat surface. That's not the issue with the power management and a cooling pad is not going to fix it. And I believe I've mentioned in the video that the behavior isn't present in normal tasks due to clock limits, just only an issue in system stresses
@@codeHusky Oh, I just remember seeing thermal testing where using a stand or cooling pad helped to keep it cooler. So my bad...
The only problem i would have is the keyboard, as the inclusion of a numpad probably makes it feel quite cramped, coming from a regular desktop keyboard

hi Husky, I did not find Omen 15 test result under 55 watts condition in other videos. Legion was running at 10 watts more at 102 degress while Omen was at 100 with 45 watts. When Legion shifted down to 45 watts, 95 degrees is lower than 100 degrees with Omen 15. So based on the fact, can I draw a conclusion that the thermal performance of Legion 5 is better than Omen 15.

Hey codeHusky, I have a legion 5 4800h rtx 2060 model. My variant heats similar to yours. Temperatures spikes to 103 degree Celsius while stress testing ( I'm from a hot tropical country). Gaming is in 85 to 95 degrees Celsius. Is this normal for a legion? I see here and there reviews and gaming walk-through on TH-cam where their Temperatures won't cross 80 Celsius. I bought this thinking it's supposed to be cool af but in reality, it doesn't seem to. I have applied for return thinking I've got a defected model. But after seeing your test, I feel that this is normal. What do you think? Should I cancel my return and keep this saying this is normal Temperatures? How come other people on TH-cam get such great Temperatures? Example Jarrod and many small youtubers who put gaming test videos...please do reply husky

Also i think there's a problem with the lights of the keyboard. In my device, sometimes the backlit does not work with the keys Fn and space. Buy it work's with the panel control of lenovo vantage.

I got this laptop 2 weeks ago and I have a major problem. when I am in hybrid mode the screen flickers like some random horizontal lines (and sometimes vertical lines especially when it is starting up and the legion logo appears). when I am not in hybrid mode and using GTX1660ti only, there is no flicker at all.
I found a quick solution for this:
I installed the AMD adrenaline software and in that program, under the display settings tab when I turn the virtual super resolution ON or OFF! (doesn't matter which one just needs to change it once!) the screen flickers stops just until the next restart.
But this kind of getting annoying for me. do you have any solution for this problem?? (consider that returning the laptop is my very last choice because I shipped it to my country (Iran) and this will take almost 2 months to get it back since there is no official Lenovo store in my country.)
For gaming would you suggest MSI GL65 leopard with rtx2060 or Legion 5Pi with rtx2060?
