Actually, Coca Cola has been trying forever to push julmust out of the market here. Failing, obviusly, but still interesting to suddenly see Coca Cola ads (which are rare here) during christmas. Not sure that there is an actual way of pronouncings Zeu..ner..ts..whatever.
I read somewhere that the sales of Coca Cola go up during Christmas season in every country in the world, except Sweden, where the sales figures plummet really low because of how much julmust people buy instead. And I just love that fact
Even more interesting, Coca-Cola Company bought a smaller brewery Bjäre and tried to make their own julmust recipe, just like they obviously have their own, secret cola recipe. However their own julmust was a commercial failure, so for the next season they had no choice but to buy the syrup from Roberts. Supposedly Coca-Cola even has made a multi million offer to buy the recipe or the entire company, but Roberts refuse to sell! Now that says something about the size of the julmust market, when Coca-Cola are so frustrated they don't dominate the non-alcoholic beverages for Christmas that they're willing to spend millions only to get access to the missing piece of the puzzle. After a few years, Coca-Cola/Bjäre gave up and no longer are producing their own julmust using purchased syrup. They just make Coca-Cola as usual and are content for whichever market share they can get. I'm sure there are other breweries who have been thinking in the same way: make our own recipe, save money and not be dependent on a sole supplier. Still the key is to come up with something people like to drink, and just like with the cola market where there are lots of smaller brands of varying quality competing against Coca-Cola and Pepsi, it is tough to find the market with an own taste. Actually there are recipes for how to make your own julmust, which may taste more or less like the store bought ones.
Zeunerts is the best:)... As people say... its a Julmust for adults. Nygårda Julmust Vintage Oak Bourbon is good. And apotekarnes årsmust, which every year has a different ingredient like chocolate or chili. Are also good. They are more expensive and can be bought at Systembolaget.
I am sad because I have run out of your new Swedish videos!!! So please keep them coming!!!! I love your videos!!!! It makes me think of my late sister and her great love for Sweden, where she lived for 6 years! (:
Best video this week! :D You showed up in the random flow here and I saw Julmust... 😁 I totally agree with you that Apotekarnes is a bad must. To much sugar at that and I don't like the taste either. That said, I'm not a big fan of Zeunert's either, mostly because I think it taste a bit like artificial banana (Skumbanan) somewhere in there. I like the roasted taste in it though and I have found another brand that maybe will go down good with you. And it's Vasa Gammeldags Julmust and Julmust Special (most like Zeunert's I guess). Those two are my favorites. Try to find them if you can and do a part two of this. That would be fun. 👍😊 Oh, do a video trying swedish candy and snacks. That could be fun. :)
Personally i like Apotekarnes Julmust because it's the only "big brand Julmust" that i actually like the taste of, so i tend to buy it because i know i'll find it almost everywhere haha
The main sirup is made by Roberts in Örebro. They invented the taste inspired from some german drink hundred years ago. They wanted to make an alcohol free festive drink. The reason all use ste same syrup is the recipe is as secret as the coca cola recipe. Very few know the blend. Zeunerts has some other ingrediences added. Make the different taste. They are a secret too.
If you feel like going pro.... do as I do: Buy (glass bottled) Zeunerts julmust at x-mas 2021, and store them cold until x-mas 2022. I drink julmust from last year or as long as from 3-4 years earlier when I want the really good stuff.
Late to the party, but about the confusion of why it's called "must": We've been making must from fruit and berries at lest since the middle ages, and by time it just became synonymous with any sweet non alcoholic beverage. And since jul- and påskmust are a relative new invention, it seemed fitting when naming it after a traditional drink. Today, we don't drink as much must made from fruit anymore. Mostly because the methods of making and preserving juice has improved, I think. But try some real äppelmust. Soooo much better than your average apple juice. Like a liquid apple. (Although, I'll rather just eat an apple instead...)
As a few have said, they should be ice cold and from the bottle. However, your rating is pretty much spot on. The Nygårda rum, oak and cognac versions are really nice but the Zeunerts take the price for me also. One thing you might want to try out is the Apotekarnes Årsmust. Every year they release a premium bottle with added flavours. Usually quite good :-)
Cold yes, from the bottle no. The aroma from the Julmust is very much in the smell and too much carbon is hiding the taste, so it should be drinken from glass.
Next Christmas you shall try the best julmust: Mora julmust. It is made in a small family-owned brewery, which produces craftmanship soft drinks from old recipes. Julmust should not be bought in large bottles or plastic bottles but in small glass bottles & drunk cold from the refrigerator to avoid any flat taste. Happy Easter from a Swede who is not so fond of julmust but drinks (Mora julmust) 1-2 bottles at Christmas because it Christmas "tradition" 😉
As a swede you like the brand you got when you were a child. What you grew up with. As the rest of our traditional christmas food most of us prefer not to have any changes. You want it to taste like you are used to since a kid. I can imagine that julmust tastes different for someone that haven't been drinking it since childhood, that has no feelings and expectations connected to it..
You could test Swedish cheese. And let us know whatg you think about them. Like Wästerbotten, Herrgårds, västgöta kloster ost, svarta och röda, och prästost. Or any other you find and feel like tasting.
Whenever I see julmust at an Ikea around this time of year I always have to grab a bottle. Even though it just tastes like grape soda with some hops. It's the McRib effect.
Tbf you only drink julmust during xmas and easter for a reason. It's usually paired with the food of those seasons. That's how I like it, in any case. And the cognac-barrel-aged is my favorite.
Oh hello, I seem to be subscribed to your channel! I suspect it has to do with the juggling tutorials you made 12 years ago. :) I don't speak any Swedish and never heard of Julmust, but the video was pretty fun! I now kinda wanna get my hands on some and try it.
Hej! Thanks so much for the comment! I figured this would surprise a lot of subscribers haha. It's kind of crazy to be posting to a channel that I've had for almost half of my life. 😅 So glad you enjoyed the video!
Okey, now you tried julmust, then try glögg, you drink(sip) in December like julmust, get it at systembolaget... Btw, julmust is not ment to drink as it, try with gingerbread or saffron bun for example...
Nygårdas lagrade is actually my favorite type of Julmust... But then I've never actually tried a whole bunch at the same time like you lol. I used to love Apotekarens in the glass bottles, but I don't know if there's an actual difference or if it's just childhood nostalgia messing with me. Plastic bottle Apotekarens is ok. (Do they even make the glass bottles anymore? I don't remember having seen them in ages, but I haven't exactly been looking.)
Zeunerts is the best there is! You should try the Zeunerts closer to room temperature, i think it tastes different and it brings out the flavors even more.
And now there is "sommarmust" too.... :D I love julmust and påskmust. Usually stocked up so I would have between seasons but now there is hardly any time between seasons. Had a co-worker who use to stock up must in his office. His staple lunch was Chinese dumplings ( his wife is Chinese) and drinking must with it. You need to drink it cold, not room temperature. Maybe a bit of a acquired taste. Like root beer. I can't stand it and my husband love it. I agree with you on Apotekarnas, it is overrated. I actually like Lidls own brand of Jul-/Påsk-must. Try "Svagdricka" (drink it cold), a more traditional drink.
Loved this video :) I'm a jul/påskmust-lover and usually buy apotekarnes sugarfree because my god I cannot drink that many "useless" calories and it is the cheapest one at my store. But, when I want it for like special occations (like xmas dinner) it is Zeunerts all the way. It for sure is the best one. Sometimes I get one of the spiritinfused ones too. #teamzeunerts
A brilliant video! I struggle to get hold of enough Zeunerts each year. This year I couldn't find it where I live. :( But I just found some Påskmust from them. :.D
Julmust is probably an acquired taste and we who were born here and grew up with it have a different taste for it. I really like Apotekarnes myself, its the one that i usually drink and seldom anything else, its easily the best i have tested, but i have never tried the expensive ones and im not that interested in trying them either because i feel Apotekarnes has the taste im looking for when it comes to must. Im very surpiced that you like the sugarfree ones much better, i admit that i dont think i have ever tasted sugarfree must, but usually sugarfree sodas taste like shit so i never drink that.
Hey, 14 different julmust, impressive! I think Nygårda is the mest. Edit: I got my answer in this video , you live 20-30 min away from me. I don’t want to creep you out, but if I see you I’m going to say hej! 😃 Great video! 😀
I strongly disagree with you on Apotekarnes, as that is my absolute favourite, but overall I would say that I agree with you. 👍 I have not tried Zeunerts julmust though, but you have convinced me to try it. Since it is easter when I am writing this, hopefully there will be a few bottles left in the stores next week. In that case I will have to try it. 🙂
Most Swede's would say Apotekarnas is the best. I tend to agree. It's a common one. But there are some amazing specialty ones as well that are better. But overall when just buying one and not wanting to spend a lot etc. Apotekarnas is basically the best.
I'm with you there! Vasa Special is more like zeunerts and more flavorful, it also have that little "burnt" taste like they have roasted malt in the mix somewhere. I avoid Apotekarnes mostly because their sneaky and crappy way of fooling everybody of 1 dl by using 1.4 liter bottle rather than 1.5 liters like ALL OTHER BRANDS on the soda market does. (They charge the same as all the rest) 😖 They claim that their manufacturing process doesn't work with the 1.5 liter bottle but that is just a big lie just to make more money because the Swedes are to gullible and just buy it anyway. We're just like lemmings... ;)
Blev imponerad av din "forskning" i ämnet must! Smaken är som baken - delad. Förmodar att du gillar diet Coke, eftersom du gav ganska höga poäng till de sockerfria alternativen. Personligen avskyr jag sötningsmedlen som används. Kul video!
As a born and raised Sollefteå bo (home of Zeunerts) I´m trilled to se that you liked it the most, the reason it taste so good is that they use more of the syrup per bottle. I love Zeunerts but drink the other ones to.
Meagan, I'm officially impressed! ;) First off, you got the Julmust test result just right - Zeunerts IS really the best! Second, you've only been a TH-camr for a few months but you're coming across as a real professional! What made you come to Sweden? From whereabout in MN are you, Twin Cities? I spent a summer in the woods south of Bemidji back in the days ('91).
Could you give an opinion of sausages in Sweden. I am convinced that Sweden is an under developed country when it comes to sausages. What we eat the most is Falukorv, which I found similar in taste to Baloney. But Falukorv is usually not served as a cold cut.
This was so damn interesting! I grew up with Hammars, so that will always be my fav, Nyckelbryggerier on a good 2nd place and then Nygårda regular on third XD I like those sweet and more soda-like ones, haha! Try mixing beer and must though! Like 50/50 between a lager and must and see if you like that :D
Apoterkarnes is my last resort to must, if nothing else is available, or if my cravings are way up and I desperatly needs one, it kind of workds, haha.
Zeunerst is the best and always will be! I totally agree with your comment on Apotekarnes Julmust, it is NOT that good people! I've always loved Zeunerts and it's the only Julmust I drink nowadays.
Julmust, påskmust, enbärsdricka, svagdricka, bordsdricka and so on - it is all about the pre-stage of making beer. The malt, scented with juniper oil for must, is the key. Must is unfermented and sweetened wort, while svagdricka is just to begin to be beer but not allowed to ferment to beer. Caramelised malt gives the deep dark taste. Zeunerts is somewhere between must and dark svagdricka. Must and mustig also mean “fully rich” in taste and smell. Try to hit a glass of must with a dash of gin. You can also make Apotekarnes taste somewhat like Zeunerts by adding from small amounts and up to 50/50 of Guinness or Carnegie Porter beer. Now, You can adjust any parameter as You like. With added gin, this is now called Mumma. Cheers. :-)
Oh my goodness, these variations with alcohol sound so good! I'll definitely be trying some of these suggestions. 😁 Thanks for all the info! Very interesting!!
lol saw that carbonation reaction coming a from the moment you brought out 14 cups. Glad you caught it. Agreed with you mostly except I give the samey ones 5/10 because I like the general flavor. But Zeunerts is another league. It tastes like Julmust should, but it's like three dimensional in its flavor compared to the flat ones.
I'm writing a letter to the editor! That change of rating for the Örebro Brygghus julmust was clearly biased, I cry foul! 😉👍👍 So that was the drinks portion of the test completed. Now on to Swedish cheeses, sausages, pickled herrings and beyond! 😊
Julmust is Coca-Cola's worst enemy! Their sales go down enormously in Sweden in december because literally everyone is chugging buckets of Julmust instead 😂 But don't feel bad you don't like it, it's one of those things you may have to grow up with to enjoy
It's a sick and bisarre thing that we drink "Coca-Cola" at all here in Sweden. Foods and drinks should be as local as possible, and certainly not from multinational companies with larger revenues and more money than most nations and states of the world.
I feel like Zeunerts has changed in taste since a couple of years ago. Loved it then. Gone is the touch of freshness/the acidic edge than I loved and it has become too sweet. Still has those coffee/chocolaty tones though!
That's ridiculous if youve grown up with julmust one of the "things" is how they over-carbonate julmust like they do with Coca-Cola. Flat julmust is if you forget it in the fridge.
My fav is no 10 julmust was created in 1910 and also Champis, as non alcoholic versions of beer and bubbly julmust was originally called Julöl as a child i used to bike by the Champis factory in Örebro smelled soooo good
Finally a neutral, impartial test of julmust! Some swedes has this obsession about apotekarens even though it tastes nothing. I usually buy Zeunerts because that's the best one, but among the cheaper, plastic bottled ones, Nygårda (not light!) has the most taste.
A friend and I both like to try out different Julmusts, and we agree with you on Apotekarnes sucking butt while Zeunerts tasting the best. But you should also try the seasonal bottles sold by the Systembolag after November first every year. Hope you like those too.
I think you actually need to be born here in Sweden and get/have the swedish tastebuds,so to speak, from the very start...this is a product, like Kalles kaviar, that foreigners seldom appreciate, but we swedish love...Julmust is a very distinct product and its an either hate or love thing with it..
I My favorite julmust is Zeunerts too. It's brewed in a brewery like a beer so the carbon dioxide make them fizz naturally.. And just like beer julmust must be bottled in a grren or brown glass bottle because they deteriorate quickly as they are sensitive to daylight. Bottled in clear glass or plastic bottles they go flat quite fast. Julmust that is not brewed is just diluted and seaasoned syrup and then carbonated like any other soda.
It's interesting that you like the sugar free better. Do you generally drink diet soda? I do agree that Zeunerts is good. I guess it's a sort of acquired taste, kind of like 'sill'. :)
I'am a Swede that have been drinking julmust since I was a kid and I can say I don't really like it eider, I drink it, but not more than a glass just to get the feel for Christmas. And maby if there is nothing else to drink. Cheers from The Great Norrland 🍻
There is a very small difference between julmust and påskmust. It's the same recipe, but if you look at the best-before-date label (Shelf life) you will see that there are shorter dates on the Christmas must, because it has been stored a little longer
I agree with you, Zeunerts has always been my favorite. Apotekarnas and ICA and some others only taste like chemicals. No one tastes like Zeunerts, which have a coffee taste to it which I like alot (it's alot of nice aromas in that one). It's the good after taste of Zeunert's which comes some seconds later (after you drink it) which makes it so good and special compared to the others.
I can also add that Zeunerts is a very small brand so most swedes have never tasted it. Some 15-20 years ago when I was a teenager the Zeunerts company actually went bankrupt so they stopped producing their julmust for a couple of years. I was devestated! .. ;) But then a couple of years later they started up again and started the production again. But it's a shame that they are so small and hard to come by. They havn't got the exposure that they deserve! Most stores don't have Zeunerts so you have to look for them. As soon as you see them, buy them, since they are so hard to come by. You were lucky that your store had them.. ;)
No way!! This is crazy to hear. I should look into this more because I want to everyone to taste Zeunerts. I can't believe it's not very common...I'm so spoiled to find it early on in my Swedish journey. 😁
@@MeaganAfterDark Usually you can find them in the beginning of december but after a while they usually run out of them. I think it's because they have small production volumes and they have a small army of hardcore fans that have discovered them and then they buy them like crazy so they go out of stock. After that Zeunerts can't keep up with the demand since they are such a small producer. I don't know how it is these days but it used to be like that a couple of years ago. Maybe they have grown now, let's hope so! .. ;) So you better stock up before the holidays before they run out. Just a tip.. ;)

Oh, do a video trying swedish candy and snacks. That could be fun. :)
Personally i like Apotekarnes Julmust because it's the only "big brand Julmust" that i actually like the taste of, so i tend to buy it because i know i'll find it almost everywhere haha
Grebbestad is the best one! They also have sommarmust and ofc Påskmust. So there is a must almost all year round😅
Lol yeah, you assessment is spot on.. I am not sure who enjoys the julmust from ICA
Haha that's why I had to find out if maybe Ica secretly had an amazing julmust. ...They don't. 😆
Late to the party, but about the confusion of why it's called "must":
We've been making must from fruit and berries at lest since the middle ages, and by time it just became synonymous with any sweet non alcoholic beverage.
I LOVE Julmust. Usually I don't like soda in general, but Julmust is
Yeeeeay. zeunerts brewery is from my home parts. .and i fully agree with your assessment. It's the best. And they make great beer to.
This blows every other reaction video out of the water. *subscribed*
Norrbottenost is also very good. Its like a creamier Wästerbotten.
@@adrianaslund8605 Men Wästerbotten är godast!
Wow! It's been a while! Good to see you! I never hear about that drink, but I'm from Peru, so I guess it makes sense.
Really good call! Zeunerts and Grebbestad is by far the best ones. And they should always be bottled.
Okey, now you tried julmust, then try glögg, you drink(sip) in December like julmust, get it at systembolaget... Btw, julmust is not ment to drink as it, try with gingerbread or saffron bun for example...
As a Swede, I totally love Julmust!!!
Apotekarnes is my favourite.
I think you have to grow up with Julmust to fully enjoy it. 😅
Dricka julmust på något annat sätt än iskallt är helgerån.
Grebbestad är fett underrated
Fun video! Your editing is on point!
I live 30 minutes away from Zeunerts, it is the best!!
I Always buy 12 zuenerts extra for the next year and just stora them cold and in som dark place they just get better!
A brilliant video! I struggle to get hold of enough Zeunerts each year. This year I couldn't find it where I live. :(
But I just found some Påskmust from them. :.D
Julmust is the only soda I drink and especially Grebbestads, according to me the best there is.
Every Christmas time I buy six bottles of Zeunertz, then I store them for a year to drink the next Christmas. =D
Meanwhile chucklefucks like me buy a 6 pack every 5-6 days when available.
Hey, 14 different julmust, impressive! I think Nygårda is the mest.
Edit: I got my answer in this video , you live 20-30 min away from me. I don’t want to creep you out, but if I see you I’m going to say hej! 😃
Great video! 😀
I strongly disagree with you on Apotekarnes, as that is my absolute favourite, but overall I would say that I agree with you. 👍
I have not tried Zeunerts julmust though, but you have convinced me to try it. Since it is easter when I am writing this, hopefully there will be a few bottles left in the stores next week. In that case I will have to try it. 🙂
Yes,,,,Zeunerts is the best! It's barrel-aged must just like barrel-aged beer. They brew great beer too.
Most Swede's would say Apotekarnas is the best. I tend to agree. It's a common one. But there are some amazing specialty ones as well that are better. But overall when just buying one and not wanting to spend a lot etc. Apotekarnas is basically the best.
I'm swedish, and I find Apotekarnes oen of the worst tasting Jul/påskmust. My top favorite, you didn't egen try! It's Vasa Special Jul/Påskmust 🐣
Meagan, I'm officially impressed! ;)
First off, you got the Julmust test result just right - Zeunerts IS really the best!
Du är rolig =)
This was so damn interesting! I grew up with Hammars, so that will always be my fav, Nyckelbryggerier on a good 2nd place and then Nygårda regular on third XD I like those sweet and more soda-like ones, haha! Try mixing beer and must though! Like 50/50 between a lager and must and see if you like that :D
Apoterkarnes is my last resort to must, if nothing else is available, or if my cravings are way up and I desperatly needs one, it kind of workds, haha.
I am surprised that you rated Nyckelbryggerier so low. I like them so I wonder if the big bottle is worse than the small ones.
Yes! It's real good with dark or half-dark beer. And mumma is mumma.
I've never heard about gin in mumma (I'm swede). We have always used rum.
lol saw that carbonation reaction coming a from the moment you brought out 14 cups. Glad you caught it. Agreed with you mostly except I give the samey ones 5/10 because I like the general flavor. But Zeunerts is another league. It tastes like Julmust should, but it's like three dimensional in its flavor compared to the flat ones.
oh man big mistake to watch this in the middle of summer when I can't get a Must. Also Zeunerts is my fav :)
I'm not sure if Zeunerts is still made in my hometown but I like that one too. 😌
Solle :)
I'm writing a letter to the editor! That change of rating for the Örebro Brygghus julmust was clearly biased, I cry foul! 😉👍👍
So that was the drinks portion of the test completed. Now on to Swedish cheeses, sausages, pickled herrings and beyond! 😊
Julmust/påskmust taste ALOT better in a glasbottle.
I LOVE the Nygårda one that is called Cognacsfat, there’s just something really special about it
romfat e bättre ;P
You nailed it.
Great and fun vids.
Julmust is Coca-Cola's worst enemy! Their sales go down enormously in Sweden in december because literally everyone is chugging buckets of Julmust instead 😂
But don't feel bad you don't like it, it's one of those things you may have to grow up with to enjoy
Julmust is suppose to be a little flat. Less carbonated than generic pop/soda.
That's ridiculous if youve grown up with julmust one of the "things" is how they over-carbonate julmust like they do with Coca-Cola. Flat julmust is if you forget it in the fridge.
Zeunerts is top shelf stuff! I've been evangelizing for them for years.
I havent seen Enbärsdricka since childhood, but if you find it, try it. It is not your typical rest of the world soda.
My fav is no 10
julmust was created in 1910 and also Champis,
as non alcoholic versions of beer and bubbly
julmust was originally called Julöl
as a child i used to bike by the Champis factory in Örebro
smelled soooo good
Finally a neutral, impartial test of julmust!
Some swedes has this obsession about apotekarens even though it tastes nothing. I usually buy Zeunerts because that's the best one, but among the cheaper, plastic bottled ones, Nygårda (not light!) has the most taste.
This is so ambitious, I love it! :D
Luv watching your reviews 🇸🇪👍🇦🇺😂❤️
Born an raised Swede here and I've had big problems with Julmust! Zeunerts it legit the only one I actually like🤣
I My favorite julmust is Zeunerts too.
Zeunerts is the correct choice. 👏🏻
I was devestated! .. ;)
But then a couple of years later they started up again and started the production again.
Maybe they have grown now, let's hope so! .. ;)
So you better stock up before the holidays before they run out. Just a tip.. ;)
@@MeaganAfterDark If I look at their home page they actually say that they make a "limited" batch every year. So that must be the reason why they usually run out before the holidays.
zeunerts.se/zeunerts-julmust/
Why arent other ppl making syrup? its almost like asking why arent other people making coca cola? Its a secret recepie
Vart köpte du Grebbestads och Zeunerts? Kan inte minnas att jag sett dom i mina när affärer här.
oh man, i just drank apotekarnas julmust today and it's the best soda I've had all year, so good; it's like the soda version of a nice cold beer.
Which is kind of insightful since must was created to be a non-alcoholic alternative to beer for the holidays! 👍
Hej,
Hittade precis din kanal och tycker att den är rolig och bra 🙂 Julmust smakar absolut bäst riktigt, riktigt kall. Jag tror att du provsmakade alla dom där rumsvarma, kan det stämma?
How did you end up in sweden? I'm so curious
Love this test, next time you try do it in a wine glass it tastes better and it do not release the bubbles as fast as you pour it.
aha! When you showed the "hammars" one I knew you have to live close by because they are only sold at a very small area in the middle of sweden and then you said "my local brewery" so seriously, if you want to connect and get a new swedish friend close by please dont hesitate :D
Blasphemy!
Apotekarnes and Nygårda are amazing! :D
Do a “what’s the best Svagdricka” for next year. Even more traditional than JuLmust.
Let me guess, gotlänning? Svagdricka is not that common in the rest of Sweden :P
My favorite is Nygårda romfat, to bad that that was not a part of this video, would have been fun to see what you thought about that one aswell
Smaken är som baken as we say here in Sweden 😁🤣 My favourite is Nygårds Ekfats lagrad, but might just be me.
