Thanks for not ripping on us import guys, usually the V8 guys can’t say anything nice, the STI just needs a Cobb intake an exhaust an you’ll be driving a completely different car. Congrats on the daily love the video hope all is well in your state
Cobb OTS maps will destroy the STI engine. Get it protuned on E85, upgrade the fuel system, leave the intake stock, (they're more than adequate) do a catless downpipe, upgrade the uppipe and headers, upgrade the oil pick up (killer B), upgrade the intercooler (ETS), exhust system and it will be a nice quick little bullet to rip around town. Get launch control added to your tune, take off traction control and those things will rip the hell off the line.
I launch at 5500 to 6k in my sti and get out on almost everything.. hellcats come around me around 75 80 mph (myspeed) my fastest track pass is 13.7 in a stock sti with a da of 6500 . Launching the car is 90 percent of my race if i bog its usually over.
I agree the launch really makes you or breaks you. I have a 13 wrx hatch. Even tho it’s not a sti still has the turbo 2.5 putting a lil less power but it’s a 5 speed so the gear ratios in my opinion is a little better then the bulletproof sti trans but that’s besides the point... the way I launch is steady 5500rpms and then let go of the clutch like if you just stepped on poop lol not to quick not to slow. It makes me tires chirp for like half a sec then I just rocket off.
I did not.. although I had only owned the car for two days at this point. Lots of little tips to launching this thing.... not anything like launching the monsters I was used to
Great video man! Love that you gave the STI a chance. They are so badass, many people just don’t put the effort into learning how to drive them. It really takes so much practice, it’s easy to give up. My 2004 WRX dynoed at 327/320 at the wheels and with the 6-speed I ran a 12.3 in the 1/4. I was actually disappointed but something like 5 guys came up to me and were in awe because they had never seen someone in a Subaru run that fast. They aren’t easy to drive fast but if you learn, they are great. Awesome video once again and hope you enjoy it for years to come!
The sti is hard to launch. I have a 600+ whp evo and a lightly molded 2019 sti and for sure the evo is easier to launch. Tips for a better sti launch. Leave the center diff setting in auto minus, turn traction control off, and leave it in sports mode. Sports sharp makes it bog like crazy. Also 5500-5800 rpm is the sweet spot for a proper launch.
This Hellcat owner definitely needs to take an “ on line course” on how to launch a manual awd subaru😂, then his mind be blown away by how quick awd car🚀 can get moving from stand still
Yes Subaru’s (especially sti’s) have incredible 0-60 times only if you launch. You’re not launching. Rev to 5k and drop the clutch. You’ll do mid 4’s stock.
RacerX you say that but for a sti and other inline 4 engines you should be at least at 4K rpms if not close to 5k, and you should probably be using the handbrake th-cam.com/video/ElcIrVLin3M/w-d-xo.html now that car has 400whp+ and 2step so it’s a little easier and guaranteed it would still bog a little if you let the clutch out exactly as he did, but just a little more slip and it would be fine for 300whp
Sold Challenger Hellcat last fall, had for 3 years, will always be my fav (muscle) car, WRX next car on my bucket list, plus can drive year around, stored hellcat 7 months of the year up north Michigan. Both cars best bang for buck cars, both avail in manual, at opposite spectrums, each could whip the other in there tailored arenas. love your comparisons of these.
If you're looking at the latest model WRX with the FA engine, you'll end up trading it in for an STi sooner or later. Just go for STi from the get go. I was in that WRX club but now joined the dark side with the STi and will never look back.
I just got rid of my 2011 SRT8 (had for 6 years) and grabbed a WRX. Loved my challenger but really needed four doors for kids. Have enjoyed my WRX but still waiting to break 1k break in period to push it to see how fast it is.
Great Video!! You'll get the hang of the STI. Like everyone said turn off the traction control then get the turbo spooling at around 4k-5k RPM's and don't dump the clutch. You'll know when you get it right when your car feels like a slingshot🤘
In my experience with my Subaru. Once the clutch gets a bit broken in and I find exactly where the pedal catches it’ll be a lot easier to shoot the car outta the hole as opposed to dumping it, that never has worked for me.. But finesse with the foot is key.
I have my second STI now. I wanted a scat pack challenger but i just love how i can hit hard the corners and power through them with total confidence i wont loose it while accelerating out of it. A few mods with a Cobb access port and E85 conversion, a pro tune and its faster than most cars on the road.
@@RacerX9 The EJ257 is rather weak, the combination of weak cast pistons and a semi open deck block is a big limitation on making reliable power. If you want to be fairly reliable and have a little extra power all you need is a Cobb access port and a turbo back exhaust. Don't even bother with a intake or blow off valve as the factory units are more than adequate. I've blown my share of EJ motors and I found this setup the most reliable. My 2019 has a Cobb access port, invidia uppipe, invidia downpipe, invidia Q300 exhaust, and ETS top mount intercooler. Its a simple setup on pump CA 91 octane I made 329whp and 351wtq on the dyno. Best run on the 1/4 mile driving it soft cause I didn't want to break anything was 12.44 @ 117 mph.
unless you're doing protune cobb access port and turboback is about all you'll want to do. anything more and you need bigger injectors and a better fuel pump. ALso there is oscilation in the fuel lines between 2500-3500 RPM because of the location of their fuel pressure regulator on the intake manifold. Its right above the 4th cyclinder. You can get a relocation kit for about 300 dollars. Its called the "GR STumble fix". Without it and having Intak + turbo back exhaust will have your LT Fuel trims all sorts of whacky during cruise speeds.
Brandon Sorenson you don’t need a tune for a bigger fuel pump and you won’t need injectors unless you’re trying to go over 330whp stock maxes out around there. You always need a dyno tune or atleast a street tune for these cars, off the shelf tunes from Cobb are trash and they’ll blow up your car.
I've experimented a little on my 19 STI and would recommend trying the following to get a better launch. Traction control button, press it at least once to put it on "Track mode" though holding it down until it completely turns off will let you slip the tires and gets rid of some of the "boggy" feeling when launching. Set the S-Drive mode to Sport#, the car has to be warmed up, and if you feel it bog/hesitate it's related to tune/fuel, so Sport might be the way to go. Press down once on the diff selector to put the center diff into "Auto -" it'll put a bit more power to the rear. Don't manually set the diff like people will say because they don't understand how the diff works. You have to get the RPMs higher, at least 4500 and don't drop the clutch, but let out quickly. You have to slip the clutch a little bit due to the difference with AWD and grip. Not doubting you know how to drive/launch as you've mentioned other cars you've had, but you have to remember with this one the power won't slip out of the wheels at those power levels. So when you launch it like you would a RWD it will bog as the engine can't overcome the grip of the drivetrain. It's a different story when you're pushing 500+ and you'll see all 4 wheels light up and that is an experience haha.
Launching an STi is an art. First gear is so low, your entire focus is on gettin into second after clutch release. Even when you get it perfect, you have about a 30% chance of smelling you clutch for the next couple days. Still one of the most amazing cars I have ever owned and does a million things better than drag racing.
He'll dog it alright.. till ~90mph. Then bye bye.. as a subie owner myself. Sti would need a built closed deck and at least 6266 turbo to not get caught by 1000hp, that's $15k+ done right. Still, nothing like coming out of the hole successfully with awd even at 305... getting moved instantly at full power. It'll hurt your neck/back.
Think the factory setup for the turbo kicks in about 3500rpm (at least in my 18' STI) so with all the assists off and setting up the rpms, you should get far better numbers. With an Accessport you can also set up launch control and track your 0-60 times. Great tool to monitor the car even if you don't mod the car.
It takes a solid 1-3 months to find all the sweet spots in your subi.. once you find the points where she rev matches, your shifts will be buttery smooth. 1st gear is difficult in subies. Flutter the gas to pull out makes it easier for daily. Slipping the clutch sends you flying like a sling shot.
Having come form the WRX world to my Scat Charger I'll drop my .02 in here. The STI driveline is pretty tough so you can beat on it a little more than the WRX. That said, neither of them like a dig very much, a roll is where they shine the most. Enjoy the new ride! They're a blast to drive around town.
The real acceleration advantage of the STI is on the twisties. It will come out of turns faster and accelerate better because the engine is at speed. The monsters are best at the tracks, straight or oval, and will smoke on the interstates. But put the race up a mountain road like pikes peak for instance, or some AT's on the STI and it will perform crazy good on roads that the monsters would not drive at any speed. They are built for different purposes. Both scary cars to push to the limits of what they can do.
When you dump the clutch on launch you lose almost all your boost, you have to just slightly burn/slip the clutch on launch to maintain your boost. Otherwise the car will give you that bog even with the traction control off.
@@eptxm5664 yeah his choice on the ricer is ok for a zippy commuter, but I would *not be watching if it wasn't for the Mopars* and also hope that he keeps it. Either that or build a redeye, that would be cool and is probably what I would do
I photograph and drive cars for a living and loved this video as I'm a big Subaru fan for JDM and Dodge fan for American Muscle. Both amazing cars for what they're built for 👍🏻
I used to have a 2011 sti. Hold the traction control button for 10 seconds to turn off traction and stability. Then Slip the clutch a little around 3200-3500rpm(don’t dump the clutch) and you will launch like crazy out of the hole.
If I remember correctly, the STI does have a built in 0-60 timer. If you press the little paddles on the left side of the steering wheel to cycle through the settings, you should see the 0-60 time on there. Let me know if I’m right or not. I have a ‘19 STi but I don’t really check for 0-60 😂
I've owned many 600 plus hp american supercars over the years i've lived my life carving canyons on bikes and cars at 54 years of age this quarantine i stayed home and built a 2018 WRX that i bought stock and now making over 400 hp plus torque with all the bracing and suspension no regrets having fun keeping the top end down these days Goodluck!
Yes... I have been getting lots of tips on launching this little sucker. I will give them a shot. It definitely different than any other car I have driven.
First I wanted to say I enjoyed the video! Cool to see and owner of both compare the two. I drive a 17 STI, it's got some mods. Basically intake, exhaust and e85. Also an upgraded clutch. Dyno tuned making 340awhp/415tq. As others have said, you gotta make sure traction control is disabled in the STI or it falls on it's face. You may not notice wheel spin like in the hellcat but the traction system on the STI is pretty advanced and takes control QUICK with any slippage. Anyway, hope you enjoy the STI! They are fun cars.
Love your videos. Keep em coming please during this quarantine BS. Just want to say I actually own a 600 AWHP built motor STi. Now that would be a great Mopar muscle car vs. rice (corn) burner battle. 😁
You’ve probably gotten this 100x on these comments but I didn’t have time to read through ALL of them 😂. The Cobb Accessport + intake will make a huge difference. It’s a staple for subies (and other cars they make it for). The other nice thing is the accessport has LAUNCH CONTROL and flat-door shifting , which I don’t use but others live by it. It also has a 0-60, 0-100, quarter mile tracker etc. I’m stage 2+ almost FBO in my 2019 sti. She’s amazing and when that external waste gate start dumping man she sounds pissed off!! Great video and have fun with the STI man. And like the other commenters thanks for not bashing the Subie guys. We’re all here for the same thing right?. To have fun and tear ass!
Also If it’s a new enough model you can change the settings in the differential to move the power around from the front or to the rear. It’s a truest amazing feature .
I saw a cool video where a guy did a 0-60 with his WRX (2018) in pouring rain! He did 0-60 in 5.89 seconds, in the rain! Try that in the overpowered Hellcat! LOL
The difference in launch is really the difference between SC and TC cars, turn off traction control, then give it about 4500 rpm, let the clutch slip just a bit, then dump. The resistance allows the turbo to build boost
No regrets buying scat pack just traded my 16 scat pack for a 19 scat pack. The Dodge is way more comfortable, rides much smoother than STI and sounds great
Traction is king of the stop light wars. My '00, Z28 with a stock LS1 hooks perfectly, no spin at all and does very well against faster cars across the intersection.
Great video! Just bought a challenger RT and I had a 2004 STI. It was awesome. Looking forward to something completely different. It’s amazing to know that the hellcat and the STI have similar 0-60 times! It gives me hope for the RT. Without the tires spinning it might be almost as fast.
I have an 05 STi with 140,000 miles...ORIGINAL clutch and still grabs fine with Stage II power. For good launches you just need to slip it a bit at 3500-4k rpm, then when you feel it grabbing, release and apply more throttle in sequence. No need to do 6k rpm clutch dumps for good times as that is what's hard on the clutch and drivetrain.
Follow these steps carefully: S# Mode + Disable Traction Control (ENTIRELY) + 1st Gear & Rev it up to 6500 RPM, Dump the Clutch (or step off gradually but quickly) + Shift into 2nd and 3rd AFAP = BOOM 4,5 Secs.
Have to properly launch an STI. Turn off your traction control, rev it to 4k+, send it to the top of the gears and not just half way up the RPM range. STI's do 0-60 in 4.8 all day out of the box.
Great video!! I've learned with my sti, after modification ( bigger downpipe, straight pipe with no cats, stage up on intake and fuel management as well as a stage 2 race clutch ) it just tears up the launch. Granted, it took me 2 months to get used to lol. Glad you didn't bash the subaru comparing it to that beast hellcat!! Much respect.
Downpipe and a tune = most bang for your buck. Also, you need to get those rpms up there then drop the clutch to get to 60 before your hellcat. Upgraded clutch is also recommended. - Former WRX owner
I see quite a few WRX’s on Mulholland Drive out here in LA. And let me tell you, those cars can corner. That’s where they really shine with that AWD 👍🏽 My Focus ST kicks my Hellcats ass in the hills lol .... Fun video, thank you 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
COBB AP alone will change that STI, you'll be mad you spent all your money on a Hellcat that will just spin in place when you need to get going, racing or otherwise.
I’ve watched Subie’s in the 7’s and 8’s at the track. Obviously modded to the max but they still make it happen. Where those cars truly shine is in mountain pass driving.
Surprised no one here has mentioned it but the first thing you need to do is pick up an Accessport from Cobb and flash your ECU to Stage 1 map. Factory Subaru map is well known to have a sluggish powerband. Cobb map evens out the powerband pretty significantly. Pick one up, it will make your daily that much more fun to drive 🤘
You are on the right track @RacerX. You do have to wind up the smaller engines to be able to leave the hole quickly. I've had my fair share of all types of engines from 4.8 v8 ford (police interceptor), 5.7 hemi, and a big diesel 6.6 duramax to multiple little 4 piston engines and both the I6 and V6 in between. Even had a rotory for about 2 years. You need to wind them up and just dump the clutch on the smaller engines. You will also go through some clutches if you don't install one that is designed to handle that kind of a launch continuously. But they are fun as hel when ya do! I have to say, it is a blast watching you explore different avenues of the motoring world. I still have four engine types I haven't lived with yet. A supercharged engine, a v10, a v12, and an electric. I was told a long time ago, you can't truly call yourself a gear head if you don't know what it's like to live with all the different kinds of motors. I'm going to love watch this journey of yours. As always, Keep Smiling
ForNoRaisin .. awesome buddy.. I really appreciate that. I agree whole heartedly.. you have to try new things and develop an appreciation for different types of cars and all the different technologies that are out there 🤜🔥🔥
I run the dragy device like I seen other comments. I have an Audi A3 Quattro stage 2 tune and many many other mods for close 370 HP and 370 TQ. The torque is the launch. Dragy tells me a 4 flat 0-60 and a 12 flat 1/4. Drive it year round in snow and with Bilstein coil overs sitting 3 inch off the ground, lightweight rims and Brembo brakes, EBC yellowstuff pads it is an absolute canyon carving rocket. Loud as hell with a full Borla turbo back exhaust. Plenty of fun regardless of the fewer cubic inches in the motor.
I had a stage 2 WRX before my Charger Scat Pack. They are both very fun cars to drive and tinker with. I absolutely miss the handling of my Subaru but love the power my Scat Pack makes!
That Subaru motor will begin opening up after about 2K miles or so. I noticed the boxer engine on my 2024 Legacy was sluggish between 1-2K RPM until after 2K miles. Now, it surprisingly fast. I also have a V6 2012 Challenger with 305hp, and the real advantage in power is between 2nd-3rd gear. I baby the Challenger now, it has 225K miles on it and still runs like a top.
Gotta understand the power band and delivery of a turbo vs. supercharger. I had a factory supercharged Saturn ion that consistently pulled from 1,500 to redline. When I got my wrx I was still trying to drive it like my Saturn, I could be at 1,500 rpm in 5th gear and pull right out of it without lugging the engine. I have to downshift at 2,000 rpm in the wrx or she gets luggy, she is not happy unless she's between 2,300 and 3500 normal driving, the VVT opens up at like 3,100 you can hear the extra air sucking into the intake without being in boost. When you hear that VVT open up she is ready to receive the full 22psi from the turbo.
As an avid Subaru WRX and STi fan, it's quite a different world. My name is pretty indicative of the sentiment. I have a few things I'll discuss. First: Great video overall and welcome to the Subaru world! It's cool so see some objective comparisons and understanding the difference between the two cars. I currently have a 2020 WRX and have also had a 2004 WRX. I have never gone the STi route yet because I like the WRX for a more economical and comfortable ride compared to the STi. I also don't do a lot of mods like I would if I had an STi. All that being said. I'm no mastermind or WRX/STi guru, but I do know enough to get me by and give some good feedback. Second: With the WRX&STi, I've found that feathering/slipping the clutch to keep the car in boost as the power pulls the car out of the hole is the key to launch. Once the bog happens all boost is lost. The times that I took my WRX to the track I found out that I had to feather to get a good 60' time. Yes, this caused more wear on the clutch, but they are fairly inexpensive and much cheaper to replace than a transmission. That said, the STi, has a MUCH stronger box that the WRX... period! I've seen people put 600-700+ to the ground on stock trans in the STi. It can take some serious RPM for a launch. I'd venture to say you'd probably be able to do a 5-6k drop, break loose all 4, and still be fine. Though, from my time in the forums I've seen most do the same thing, but instead of a clutch drop, a feather/slip to keep the turbo in boost. Thrid: Someone mentioned the Cobb Accessport(AP) and I would greatly recommend at least a stage 1 (Off the Shelf/Can as you call it), for a couple reasons. One, is Cobb has great base MAPs to get you by until you can get a Protune. Two, in my experience and on the forums, the OTS map is a much better-optimized throttle, and overall driveability compared to stock. Yes, a Protune is something that can be had through the AP. The AP comes with a rev limiter and launch control that does wonders for the AWD cars! In the WRX/STi community, Cobb is mostly king for a tuning tool and engine management. If you're looking to keep the STi very daily friendly. I HIGHLY recommend going stage 2. Basically, this is a Cobb AP + full Turboback exhaust, 3-port boost control solenoid, and if you want more turbo sound a short ram intake. Get this Protuned by an authorized cobb tuner and you have a great daily! All that being said and as you said in your video. You're not looking to do that at this juncture, and I completely agree from a Daily standpoint of not burning the clutch out. However, that's how most of us launch and there are things to help like launch control. Even for daily, I'm a huge fan of a stage 2 upgrade for the WRX/STi platform. I haven't done it yet on my WRX, but I shall soon enough. Just my .02
The STI isn't built for straight-line speed; it's built for mountain roads and canyon carving. Both are great cars, but we are kind of comparing apples to oranges!
To help w the 1st gear 'problems' lookup how to turn off the hill assist. If you have a little light on the bottom right corner of your dash, it's off. Basically press and hold the traction control button for about a minute, turn off the car and turn it back on, something like that. It makes a world of difference. I have a 2017 WRX Stage 2 at the moment. Wanna go on flex fuel soon for those real gains (on a little 4cyl) But hope that helps 💪
Old video, I know, but you absolutely cannot believe the hellcat built in 0-60 time of 4.5 seconds when you are spinning the tires, because it's timer will stop as soon as those spinning tires reach 60mph even though the car hasn't actually hit 60mph yet. The phone app was probably far more accurate (though still not 100% accurate) since it uses gps to determine speed.
I’m just a car guy that can appreciate any angle taken at making a great driving experience and both those cars can get the job done with majorly different approaches…..enjoy the crap out of them!
congrats on the STI i have the same color. I had the same issues launching the car but 5500-6000 rpms is the sweet spot to learn the launch i roll off the ebrake helps a ton and allows you to slip the clutch and not dump the clutch. I would love to see some back road driving action thats where the sti shines even in stock trim.
Just driving my 2022 WRX in the rain and it is incredible how these cars are glued to the road and I cannot get the wheels to slip during rapid acceleration or cornering. Also, I have been driving between semis at high speeds down the highway and the car does not flinch a little. However, I will not challenge a hellcat unless it's raining.
I have a 2020 challenger scatpack widebody and a 2017 STI. These cars are polar opposites lol. I got the STI as the quick, daily , dad grocery getter. The scat is the loud, smoke the tires date night car. I love both these cars tremendously but it's really hard to put them side by side. The scatpack will drag the STI in straight line performance. BUT...I find the STI overall more fun to drive. The handing of the subie is great and who doesn't like hauling ass and feeling like a rally driver! Glad to see I'm not the only MOPAR guy to step into the import side of the fun!
Whoa it's fine Man ,get with a good local tunner when you're ready to upgrade the power car can still work as a daily around 400-450hp. Cobb is the big name in Subaru tunning. No real worries about the clutch on a stock car. While its 305hp to the Crank it's torque is farless. Cobb's Access Port will give launch control and flat foot shifting. Once you learn how to shift you'll be a bit quicker. Basically your not keeping the turbo spooled between gears. Not to mention you still have traction control on, you have 3 modes over there. On Track Mode and off. As far as upgrades Cobb AP , Sf air intake, turbo inlet, Downpipe ,good header ,good topmount, upgrade fueling with id1000cc or better injectors. Upgraded turbo FP blue or black when you're ready. Full safety mods. V8 guys not knowing how to shift smh :p
Get a pedal Commander and it changes a lot. Next to no throttle lag. Just got one for my WRX and although mine isn't an STI, it has aftermarket parts (cold air intake, intercooler, turbo, and exhaust) you will definitely notice a difference in 0-60. Just something to look into. If you do, don't put it in sport plus until you get it down.
The Charger weighs 4200 pounds but even at that weight without some good suspension mods and drag radials 1000 horsepower is a lot of power that if the car doesn't have serious mods to the suspension while fun and fast it will not meet its full potential unless you are looking to have fun and do 80mph burnouts l would imagine that without some serious suspension mods and drag radials it would be dangerous if driven hard like real dangerous
Gloria Maletta .. you definitely have to know how to handle the car.. it does have dynamic suspension but regardless of the suspension mods it is a serious challenge to plant on the street.
My 89 Supra was a dog out of the hole until I figured out how to safely launch with some boost. You need to press and release throttle a few times before taking off. The trick is to let out the clutch between throttle depressions. I would typically rev up to about 3k each time I pressed the throttle. That’s gets turbo spooling great for a better takeoff.
2021 WRX and I can hang with Hellcats on the street but not on the track when they have slicks. I’m not stock though, I’m running e30, intake, Cobb boost controller, and upgraded intercooler, 361whp
As far as your sti goes, stock you won’t be really getting what you want. Dropping a bit on Cobb’s access port will give you some better feeling. It’ll make that throttle feel a bit better and allow you to bump up the boost. On my 2017, I launch at 4500-5000. You want to turn your traction control off because it will bog the car down. When I first got this car, I had not been a manual launching driver. I come from big motor power glide race cars. This car really likes leaving at about 5k, running the clutch to lockup then dumping that way there’s minimal clash. I don’t mean to “tell you” how to drive it. Just what I do from one car guy to another. Enjoy your videos!
Get yourself a Cobb Accessport for the STI. Then you can get 0-60 and 1/4 mile times, along with a bunch of other cool features and the ability to tune and remap it, etc. 👍🏼
The STI has a completely different purpose , if you test your hellcat on the dirt, it won’t be as good as the STI. Both are awesome cars in their own right. And no need to “smoke” the clutch to get it “out of the hole” it just takes practice.
Nice vid! I have a dragy and I compared it to my actual slips at the track and it is consistently within a tenth or two tenths at most. Definitely worth looking into for these types of videos 👍🏻
Clean rides bro 👍. I have a wrx myself . If you notice they do have a rev lag when they are stuck , that’s probably why you have trouble launching. Nothing a tune or a accessport can’t fix lol 😂. Good video 👍
Thanks for not ripping on us import guys, usually the V8 guys can’t say anything nice, the STI just needs a Cobb intake an exhaust an you’ll be driving a completely different car. Congrats on the daily love the video hope all is well in your state
No worries my friend... mods will likely be coming soon. I do enjoy driving this little car
Anything Cobb besides the fuel system and Ecu is for casual owners ets exhaust sounds way better
Get launch control added to your tune, take off traction control and those things will rip the hell off the line.
wow because a intake and exhaust is going to make a world of a difference LMFAOO
I agree with this guy, stock 2003 wrx intake on a hybrid build with bolt ons pushing 328 HP!
I launch at 5500 to 6k in my sti and get out on almost everything.. hellcats come around me around 75 80 mph (myspeed) my fastest track pass is 13.7 in a stock sti with a da of 6500 . Launching the car is 90 percent of my race if i bog its usually over.
Tyler youngs my stage 1 wrx did 13.7 1/4 and a 4.6 0-60 according to Cobb. I launch at 4200 though but my motor is much torquey than the ej.
@@tylerbryant4373 I did a 13.352 1/4 pass in a 2002 sti and I managed to 0-60 in 4.82
My fastest time on my stock wrx is 13.9 these things take a while to get used to
I wrote this and went and bought a hellcat.. also very difficult to launch correctly on stock tires
Are you taking your traction control off when you launch? This will allow the tires to spin just a little to reduce the bog your feeling!
I did not.. although I had only owned the car for two days at this point. Lots of little tips to launching this thing.... not anything like launching the monsters I was used to
@@RacerX9 turn hill assist off also
Exotic Mags how?
Turn off traction control and it'll take off.
@@RacerX9 press traction once, set diff to manual full rear. really changes the feel of the car.
“I’m gonna give it a little more RPM”
*Revs to like only 1.5k*
Right lol barely heard it
Great video man!
Shawn Z what’s your insta or Facebook?
Weird since WRX spoils quicker then the Sti. I do agree on the Sports mode then I switch to sharp after. 🤷♂️
@@subarubuildz1738 I'm a old school 35 year old geezer, no social media for me.
You don’t need 5500rpm to launch a stock sti on the street. 4300/4400 is nore then enough.
Tell me about it, you said it perfectly!! Sport sharp is so hard to launch in... sport I can launch nice in...
8:39 This thing is ridiculous... AND I LIKE IT
Haha .. yes it is 👍
This Hellcat owner definitely needs to take an “ on line course” on how to launch a manual awd subaru😂, then his mind be blown away by how quick awd car🚀 can get moving from stand still
The Hellcat was not his first car yo.
I have been around the block a few times my friend .. 10 manuals .. 70-1000 hp .. this kinda crap cracks me up!
Gotta put her on the limiter and and hover the clutch just off the grab point and let it out quick don’t side step it.
Exactly, see th-cam.com/video/xsFX32-0bp4/w-d-xo.html Cobra had 2x the power but couldn't put it down.
cobb tuner gives access to launch control at whatever rpm’s you want
Facts... this is how subies work.
2019 wrx here, i usually launch at around 4-4.5 rpms and it pulls and accelrates ALOT harder than what is shown here
I was thinking the same thing. At what RpM do you dump your clutch at? It should be near its peak torque @rpm
Yeah same here. I own a 02 WRX and I usually rev to 31-3200 rpm (turbo spool)
I have my second STI now. I wanted a scat pack challenger but i just love how i can hit hard the corners and power through them with total confidence i wont loose it while accelerating out of it. A few mods with a Cobb access port and E85 conversion, a pro tune and its faster than most cars on the road.
Robert Rouse .. nice.. yes it’s a fun little car.. mods coming soon 👍
Robert Rouse turbo BRZ or FRS> STI🤧 nah I’m playing 😂to each their own they’re both amazing cars in there own aspect.
@@2008tmp But getting it right and getting into second perfectly timed is so rewarding. I love launching it
Go stage 1, and you'll dog the HellCat. Plus turn traction control control off, 5600 RPM, and slip the clutch, don't dump it. You won't bog.
Thanks for the tip
@@RacerX9 Anytime. Welcome to subbie community. You'll love that car.
Great tip .. much appreciated 👍
Did he say “Colin McGregor”? 😂😂😂
Connor ... Collin .. Same thing lol
You can't dump those clutches, try slipping it
Great video brotha!
Once you get the access port for the STI you will have options there for launch control flat foot shifting it's pretty neat
All wheel drive is always a problem they hook. They are both Awesome in there own way..
Agreed Craig 👍
FYI, Stevie Wonder is not blind. Watch that video with him catching a falling microphone stand.
Cobb AP for 0 to 60 measuring and tuning. You didn't turn off traction control. Love that you have both. Congrats
Ik the Sti is your daily driver but if you modded it you could see the real reason why people love the awd tuners😃
When you dump the clutch on launch you lose almost all your boost, you have to just slightly burn/slip the clutch on launch to maintain your boost. Otherwise the car will give you that bog even with the traction control off.
Exactly, you have to kinda bump the throttle and find the perfect balance between boost and clutch burn.
Great video! Tip from a subie owner; because of the AWD grip, you need to slip the clutch in first gear to get it off the line quicker.
Slipping the clutch will burn it out, it has factory launch control
I love that hellcat! Been watching the channel for a while! Please don’t ever get rid of it!
Things are up in the air right now Peter.. you never know 👍

Fat Scat Widebooty .. excellent.. I will give it a shot 👍
Go stage 2 with a pro tune and I promise you will have a great time in that sti man
Next video: how to make a WRX STI as fast as a Hellcat. Lol.
No way you will be able to leave that STI alone. They are so easy to mod.
You have to turn traction control off on the STI.
Yes... I have been getting lots of tips on launching this little sucker. I will give them a shot. It definitely different than any other car I have driven.
For best results on 08+ STI: 1. traction control off 2. Center Diff set to Manual and locked [-] 3. lanch control set to 5,000 rpms
I launch my Sti at 5500rpm and it loves it. Awesome video!
Love your videos. Keep em coming please during this quarantine BS. Just want to say I actually own a 600 AWHP built motor STi. Now that would be a great Mopar muscle car vs. rice (corn) burner battle. 😁
Thank you my friend.. now that is a little rocket 👍
Traded my 2016 STI for Scat pack both great cars just very different but both fun
I fully agree Scott 👍
@Original Lorre do it! You wont regret it. She pulls so hard. Pulls a bit harder than a stock hellcat...at first until that boost kicks in.
No regrets buying scat pack just traded my 16 scat pack for a 19 scat pack. The Dodge is way more comfortable, rides much smoother than STI and sounds great
Turn off driver hill assistant on sti. Better launch you will feel
I second this!!!! Made a huge difference in my 2020 WRX
WRXSNOWMAN what’s the difference we are suppose to feel ? I still have it on in my 17 wrx I just don’t see why to take it off
@@Victor-vq9ks you wont have to wait for the computer to disengage the brake
Traction is king of the stop light wars. My '00, Z28 with a stock LS1 hooks perfectly, no spin at all and does very well against faster cars across the intersection.
I had an 02 trans am.. same motor.. loved that car 👍
You have to give it the beans
Yes I hate trying to destroy my clutch on day 2 though lol
Follow these steps carefully:
S# Mode + Disable Traction Control (ENTIRELY) + 1st Gear & Rev it up to 6500 RPM,
Dump the Clutch (or step off gradually but quickly) + Shift into 2nd and 3rd AFAP = BOOM 4,5 Secs.
I'll tell you what tho, the Subie is safer!
Make sure Hill assist as well as traction control is off and it'll make a big difference.
Got my adrenaline pumping with that hellcat lol😉cute shirt too..Awesome video😉💯👍
You should get some sound proofing and cover the entire trunk area. I did it in my magnum and couldnt be happier. Keeps the drone down A LOT.
Might do that one day too the borla i have can get to droning sometimes
Downpipe and a tune = most bang for your buck. Also, you need to get those rpms up there then drop the clutch to get to 60 before your hellcat. Upgraded clutch is also recommended. - Former WRX owner
I see quite a few WRX’s on Mulholland Drive out here in LA. And let me tell you, those cars can corner. That’s where they really shine with that AWD 👍🏽
My Focus ST kicks my Hellcats ass in the hills lol .... Fun video, thank you 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Alan Zolotoff .. I agree with you my friend.. this thing corners like a beast 👍
Great Video!! Like to see you race it against the Scat Pack next!!
That’s definitely coming my friend 👍
Not fair because scat is stock and hellcat is completely done up so what’s the point lol
CaRnAgE_4_Justin because a stock 500 hp scatty vs a stock 300 hp sti would be a good comparison and great footage
Stevie Wonder keeps his eyes on the road when he drives more than you
Some first upgrades are Intake, turbo inlet pipe, turbo back exhaust, Cobb tuner.
"And that's like half throttle. Goodnight this car is ridiculous....AND I LIKE IT!"

Just my .02
You heard it here folks, Collin McGregor. 10:36

Hey great video!! Very helpful and informative!!! Keep up the great work!
Wanna go on flex fuel soon for those real gains (on a little 4cyl)
But hope that helps 💪
Great video buddy hellcat is a beast love it. Wrx is fun car 🔥🔥🔥👍
Thanks Chad.. yes the STI fun .. the hellcat is violent 👍
Appreciate the honest commentary. New subscriber here and this video is helpful.
Welcome to the channel my friend
The Charger weighs 4200 pounds but even at that weight without some good suspension mods and drag radials 1000 horsepower is a lot of power that if the car doesn't have serious mods to the suspension while fun and fast it will not meet its full potential unless you are looking to have fun and do 80mph burnouts l would imagine that without some serious suspension mods and drag radials it would be dangerous if driven hard like real dangerous
Gloria Maletta .. you definitely have to know how to handle the car.. it does have dynamic suspension but regardless of the suspension mods it is a serious challenge to plant on the street.
suspension solves many problems
Good Gawd Thing is RIDICULES. And I Like it. Understatement of 2020.
Mike Hixson .. definitely something to try 👍
RacerX I was able to cut .5 second off e.t. that way. Huge difference.
I'm a big fan of the imports, looking forward to what's to come on your channel 👍👍
2021 WRX and I can hang with Hellcats on the street but not on the track when they have slicks. I’m not stock though, I’m running e30, intake, Cobb boost controller, and upgraded intercooler, 361whp
Adding a Cobb accessport and launch control will give you the beans. Take traction control off too 👀
keep bringing these type of videos
Definitely more to come 👍
We watching from Las-Vegas we also are car enthusiasts
Love the video man! Just subbed! I did something similar with a 600whp STi. Results were as expected but it was fun!
240whp vs 800whp i could just imagine a 400whp sti dam that would be such a close race
Andrew G .. absolutely.. I will check that draggy out 👍
Clean rides bro 👍. I have a wrx myself . If you notice they do have a rev lag when they are stuck , that’s probably why you have trouble launching. Nothing a tune or a accessport can’t fix lol 😂. Good video 👍
*STOCK
Driver mod needed 😂 good video keep it up 🤙
