It's fundamentally a long-form short story series turned into various media and it works to its advantage. Story: Story primarily follows Kino, a young adventurer and their companion Hermes, a talking motorcycle. They travel and explore a world of many different countries spending only three days at each place.
In my travels, i tried the 3 day rule because of this anime. I found it isn't quite long enough to really get a feel for a place, but then again our world has a lot more to see than kino's i suppose.
Kino goes through tiny countries that are basically the size of cities in our world. Kino's rule wouldn't really apply to the much bigger countries of our world, especially the giant "continent" sized countries like the USA, China, India, etc that have dozens of different cultures and will take weeks to travel through by automobile.
@@jg1009 I think 8-12 days is about right. You have to consider work week and weekends. Just traveled to Thailand spending a couple days in certain areas. It can feel rushed and overwhelming. If you don’t plan ahead, you might end up doing the same things twice. Also , I met an American family that spends 3 months in a different country. Their daughter was no older than 8 and she had a strong grasp on many foreign languages and customs including thai. Better than myself and I’ve been to Thailand several times but never longer than 2 weeks.
A pretty good message to the episode imo. Guns aremt for intimidation, they arent to deter theft, theyre for killing. You can dress it up however you want, but ultimately theyre to neutralize a threat, not just to intimidate.
They aren't even necessarily to neutralize a threat. Their only use is to do harm, but whether or not whatever harm is done benefits the wielder or anyone else is entirely up to the person who pulls the trigger.

They are effective for intimidation because they are known to be effective for the purpose of causing harm. You don't use a gun to intimidate, you use the threat of the use of a gun to intimidate. You wouldn't use a gun against a hostage because then you would lose your leverage, but you would threaten to use a gun against a hostage because if you didn't there wouldn't be a point in taking a hostage. ✨Semantics✨
What I like about this country even though killing is legal they don't abuse it rather they use it to protect their community from people who would abuse it. It's definitely an ideal place to live when you have a community that looks out for each other even for visitors

For the light novels, I recommend Barnnn's Translations for volume 1 (they have a blogspot), Untuned's translations for volumes 2 - 11 (also have a blogspot), and then Baka Tsuki's translations for volumes 12 - 17 (they have their own website). Its kinda scary how Crunchyroll posts this video mere days after I finished this anime. I recently learned about the original one as well, haven't watched it but this one was enjoyable

Others are the same stories from 2003, but with a different direction the focus, action and storyboard adpats some elements from the novels that weren't in the 2003 series. Little trivia: In 2003 series, the seiyuu of the little girl (Sakura from the country near a volcano) debuted with that role. Years later she was asked to voice this Kino. And she accepted immediately.
I like how you can really see the difference between the original series and the remake by how loud and over-the-top the voice acting is. The original's mood and atmosphere is a lot more mellow and focused on suspense with tons of unique stories and mysteries. This episode seems very straight forward, but has a tone of that style, if only a bit too simple of an idea. Kino and Hermes do feel a lot like the original, so that's a big plus.
It's a beloved series that has been running for a long time, but as you can see it's very episodic so it's easy to get into. It's pretty good! In the last few episodes you'll finally get to see her origin story, but that's only if you can get past a CERTAIN controversial episode...

The novel series is also pretty easy to pick up too, since you can easily tell which story is which. But the anime picked a bunch of stories from all over, so reading it in release order is another experience.
@@yukirin1473 All I can say is certain translation sites have picked this up, that and sites that have it in stock (English or otherwise). I can personally read Chinese so I can access Chinese translation sites that are MUCH further ahead in this. After all, there are a bunch of weebs over in China too.

This new version isn't bad, but the 2003 series is much more atmospheric, well-directed, and thought-provoking.
