The way food is a constant topic through the whole anime is really interesting.

Basic biology.
yuu's obsession with food is both adorable and depressing. When you realize her fixation on food is due to a constant state of near starvation, you realize the dire situation these two are in and the fact that their eventual deaths are inevitable. The cuteness of this show is not only a mask which encases the underlying morbid nature of girl's last tour, but also serves to draw attention to its bleakness via contrast.

この2人じゃわずかに残ってる保存食を探していくしか生きる道がないのがツラいところ。贅沢な食事を知らなかったのが唯一の救いか

It comes from a belief, at least I feel, that even in the direst of times, when the only thing that defines each day is that crushing hopelessness, we as a species will still do all we can to find joy in the ephemeral. In falling rain, in ration bars, in traveling with a trusted companion, even as the world around you breathes its last.

ユーリの銃は日本軍の38式歩兵銃
技術が衰退した終末世界ではWW2レベルの古い武器しか作れなくなった

今の世の飲食物と比較すると、そこまで美味くもなさそうだしバリエーションにも乏しい飲食物だけど、そういう比較や優劣とかのしがらみのないところで無邪気に「うまいっ」て食べるのが、不必要な理想に囚われずありのままの今ある幸せを幸せとして素直に受け取る本作の魅力の1つだと思う。絶望と仲良く、とかにも通じる一貫した作品のスタンス
