I played the amateur game and onto semi pro from school boy and into my mid 30s, I never considered myself as technically gifted as other players around me but based my style and philosophy of defending on his example. I loved the way he watched and hunted the ball before creating play in front of him, instilling confidence in the wider team, it wasn't until meeting opposition players after hanging my boots up that I came to realise they hated playing against me, stating that I had mastered the game of defending and for them I was technically the best toughest but fairest defensive players they had come across.. although the glory and reputations were sparse for me the relentless legs and last ditch tackles, frustrating other teams always made me smile. Winning trophies and the odd goal at seemingly critical moments of play I can firmly say that Alan Hansen was a true inspiration and hero for me... a boy from a tough upbringing with only 90mins to occupy my time and efforts, I doubt I would have enjoyed the game either watching or playing without his no nonsense and hard working approach, a lesson that I have learned to use to succeed in many different areas of my life... As a non-Liverpool fan, Hansen was a top centre back for Liverpool, because he worked so hard and he led Liverpool to 2 league titles and the F.A. Cups. Hansen also won league titles, league cups and cups in Europe too.Hansen said "that you can't win things with kids" But he was proved wrong.

They didn’t win anything with kids though. It was a mix.
And he was right. That team was full of experience. 2 or 3 young players doesn't change that
