@Cool Dude yeah his ability to effortlessly glide past 2 or 3 players combined with his defensive abilities. My dad has always said it (as a forest fan) he was the best defender of that generation

One of the best of all time
Always thought that VVD is our all time best CB. But all the senior I know said that it was Alan Hansen. I’m not old enough to see him plays. But this clip is really makes me get the picture.

Could read the game most times as good as anyone always have Hansen in my greatest ever Liverpool side he was IMO the best playing centre back i saw in his time and i actually met him back in 89 ❤👌

Yep but Slur Alex left him out of the Scotland squad for Mexico 86, purely out of spite. Hansen had just captained Liverpool to the double and would have been perfect at controlling the pace in the heat and altitude of Mexico.

GOAT ... quite easily one of the all time best defenders ever in the history of the game.. if he was German or Brazilian he would never be so underrated or overlooked as a master example of how to defend... it goes beyond that though, his attitude towards fitness, commitment, strength, timing, consistency, combined with the wider understanding of the game and not just his role as defender, a leader in every team he played, Alan Hansen is one of very few players that ever be recognised as having a complete footballing mind and the Greatest Of All Time ...

Thanks for the video. One of the best defenders in football history but unknown to most young and non British football fans. Next one, Karlheinz Förster, my favourite player.
I liked KH Forster. But after seeing Gaetano Scirea at WC 82, this Italy libero/sweeper became my no. 1 favorite for that position. Ruud Krol is my 2nd favorite libero/sweeper.
Forster was another very underrated player. Anyone who one watched football in the 80s will know Forster was World Class.

All I knew he was a tall CB who formed a twin tower with Mark Lawrenson. I didn't know he drove forward several times and scored goals with his foot.
It wasn't just Hansen. Liverpool had a solid back 4 during this period. The best (strongest) defence in the league.

He said It as a pundit on the BBC MOTD Programme, He retired from football in 1990 the last time Liverpool won the league . He was captain.
He was at the club the following season , never played due to his reoccurring knee injury & left just after Kenny left as manager in March 91.
But he was right. That Man Utd team had bags of experience but the way he said it was wrong. The main players for them was Cantona, Bruce, Schmeichel, Irwin, Keane, Giggs
