  • In this video, we take a look at the all new Google Chromecast with Google TV Formally know as Android TV.
This is a stand-alone Android TV/Google TV device and its pretty awesome!
This will Compete with ROKU and Amazon Firestick devices but I can tell you right now after testing this device would personally choose the new Chromecast over the Amazon Fire Stick!
With access to the Google Play store 4K 60hz video playback and Dolby Vision, this is looking like an awesome choice if you are looking for a new inexpensive Media Playback device / Android TV / Smart TV device and by the way, it handles emulation much better than I thought it would!

Hey, you misunderstood what "Viewport" and "Current/Optimal Res" means in the "Stats for Nerds" overlay on TH-cam. You are, in fact, getting 4K in your demonstration - you can see that in the "Current Res" line. Viewport is merely the "virtual" resolution, which is only used for UI element scaling. Think of it like a retina display in a Mac: The operating system acts like an HD display was connected and scales the UI elements accordingly, but it's actually pushing all ~8 million pixels that the 4K screen can display. The reason for this is that otherwise all the UI and text would be really really tiny on high-resolution displays.
tl;dr: Ignore the "viewport" line and only look at "current res". It's not a bug, it's just confusing if you don't know about pixel density. :)

1st gen is still usable, in the age of throwaway it's quite amazing. Very annoyed at the serious playback bugs with TH-cam though, buffer fills, no dropped frames and it acts like someone's pausing and pausing, but only with some videos, can be any resolution, some 1080p videos play perfectly. All other apps other than TH-cam work perfectly so that's extremely annoying in principle too.

This review is extremely biased and misleading. I've had the Fire TV stick for years, I just got the Chromecast with Google TV and despite it being more expensive it's not an upgrade whatsoever, it's almost the same thing but actually worse. Not only does Alexa work way better and integrates way better with Music, etc but with the Fire TV stick you can use the Echos as speakers for the TV, you can't even do that with the Chromecast... Oh and I've even noticed a bit of a lag between video and sound, something that never ever happened with my Fire TV stick...

After just under a year, my 4k fire stick sound got really out of sync. After googling it, it seems that's a common issue with the fire stick. I was having to attempt to fix it once a week and got sick of it. Since none of the sticks were 50% off over the holidays and the new interface update wasn't for the 4k stick (I know it is but it's at a later tdb time so not available), I upgraded to the chromecast with google tv. I had a few hiccups in getting the remote to turn my tv and soundbar on/ off but once I got that squared away, I've really enjoyed it. I was able to adjust my audio sync back to normal so it'd work as expected. I didn't know it could do gaming things and the information about the extra storage is cool!

It is great that you show how limitations can be overcome with sideloading, but what about security? High volume, always on, connected to all home devices -honestly this thing scares me. Is there virus scanning or virtualization software you can recommend?
Every time I see one of the monopoly products with great video streaming and playback performance I wonder why we can't get our open source SBCs to do the same because they use the same cores.

@@nanayaw3726 that doesn't even make sense as a plus... the firestick doesn't necessarily need to be attached directly to the HDMI, it comes with a cable extension that hangs from it in case it doesn't fit directly, exactly like the chromecast.

I only wrote this for people interested in an honest comparison, since I had to go through the trouble of having both as I had also heard the chromecast was "amazing" but it wasn't worth half the hype. @ 3:40 The viewport resolution of 1920x1080 is actually just the resolution scale for the interface of the TH-cam video menu, not the actual resolution of the video. It does the same thing on my Chromecast Ultra on a Samsung 4K Smart TV, the viewport shows 1280x720 * 1.5 =1920x1080.
Someone on Reddit explained it like this “what /u/bpobpo is saying is that the interface of the youtube app is lower resolution than your actual tv resolution. it is the same with nvidia shield and most 4k android tv's, the android tv interface is 1080p (can be increased through root edits to full res but makes everything look very small), consequently the youtube app is the same, but playback of 4k video is of course at full res”

Please use Parsec instead, it is by far the best performing remote client available. Better than Rainway, and better than Moonlight.
I don't know why people still recommend moonlight, as it only runs on Nvidia GPU's and isn't any faster. Parsec can do 240fps at 4K with up to 50mbps bandwidth (you can go as low as 5mbps, but that would be more useful for 1080p 60)
And yes, it works flawlessly over wifi, no need for a dongle. It's meant to be a "just works" solution, and even allows for multiple people to connect at the same time, if you want to play 4 player smash bros for example, or just want to share your screen while you're making something in blender, instead of setting up a livestream or something similar

I am glad that the device is now a box and not just essentially a casting dongle.
It will be popular for people that want all the 4K services and don't want to mess about.
But the real potential draw for me is the possible use of external USB docks to expand the number of ports.
My only question is just how much it can be loaded with only having a 5v/1.5a delivery as otherwise it would be great if a few external hard drives could be used with an appropriately powered ac adaptor.
It woukd also be useful to know if the USB-C setup can also support a second HDMI connection via a dock.
