  • So a little while back, I stumbled across the world of Android TV boxes, and the first one I decided to buy was the Google Chromecast with Google TV 4k, but was that a smart descision?...

    You're certainly correct that it can't handle very high bit rate video files. I installed the Plex app on it to play 4K Dolby Vision movies such as "Back To The Future" which has peak bitrates over 100mbps. It drops frames and the GC 4K will crash when trying to fast forward. It's fine with the Apple TV app running 4K Dolby Vision series such as "Ted Lasso."
    I bought a "VEMONT USB C hub with Gigabit Ethernet" from Amazon and it does utilize the 1mbps Ethernet bandwidth so I'm guessing that the processor in the GC 4K dongle is simply not powerful enough. I might try the Nvidia Shield TV Pro.
    Oh yeah, the remote I got with it is pretty crappy. The buttons wobble so much that I have to press the buttons precisely in the center of the button.

    New Chromecast 4k rumoured to be coming soon. Google io is in may so perhaps don't buy a Chromecast just yet. Also the remote is slippery as a bar of soap, so a silicone cover is useful.

    I have the cheaper 1080p version, and for 20 bucks, it really can't be beat. Not to mention I can use it as a steam remote play endpoint to play computer games in my home theater with minimal latency.
    It's the best thing after Asus decided to brick all the Nexus players with a forced update.

    Hey i see you have Stremio on your chromecast, i have a fire stick 4k max and there is a black screen when i try to watch Dolby Vision/HDR10+ movies on Stremio, i heard that this is because fire stick doesn't have all Dolby Vision Profiles, and i also heard that Chromecast 4k has all profiles and run smooth, did you have any issue while watching 4k Dolby Vision movies/tv shows on Stremio? I need to know because i'm willing to buy one today. Thank you

    I am a little unaware of tech stuff, so what is the benefit of Chromecast 4k. Do we still need to subscribe to Netflix, Amazon prime to watch their content?

    • @manistechshack
      @manistechshack  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      Yes, you still have to subscribe to any services you want to use. So basically, what a chromecast is most most useful for is the same thing a Smart TV is useful for, like TH-cam, Netflix, etc. Only the chromecast (or any trusted Android TV box) is a lot more powerful than what you'd find in most smart TVs, resulting in better video quality and audio quality.
      On top of that, it runs Android TV, which conveniently allows you to sideload apps you won't find on something like the playstore or appstore. What that means is that it opens up doors to allow you to use apps that can let you watch movies and show for free (which, of course, I don't condone).
      Basically, your TV is a monitor first, and computer second. Whatever hardware your TV has inside can not be replaced, resulting in a slow and choppy experience using the software provided. An android box like the Chromecast eliminates that problem.

      This is a tech channel, and I make these videos in line with what I use these devices for. I don't have a home server for movies since I see it as a waste of electricity with not so many benefits, so I can't tell you what it's like to use a chromecast for that.

      @@manistechshack " a home server for movies since I see it as a waste of electricity with not so many benefits "
      Are you serious about that sentence part?!
      A home server (if chosen the hardware and sw set up well) doesn't have much impact on energy usage. It doesn't have to be a high powered computer, actually the contrary is true most of the times. The benefits are independence, an own cloud instance with privacy and security and I'm not talking purely about movie collections' privacy, everything else as well.

      @roberttranceedm Yes, I'm serious. High or low energy usage, I don't need one. Therefore, for me, it's a waste. Doesn't take much brain power to figure that one out genius. Such a video, if you are a serious tech video maker or you want to become one, shouldn't be about your use case only, but all that the device and software could be used for and how well it performs at those tasks. You know, informing your audience properly.
