I have a mix of OG Chromecast and Gen2 Chromecast throughout the TV's in my house.
They're definitely showing their age, and whilst firmware upgrades over the years has improved user experience significantly from what it was at launch, these devices still struggle sometimes.
With the addition of the "Australia tax" making prices for the new ones a bit much for what it is, I've been waiting for the 4K to go on sale (it currently retails for $129 in Australia). But with this new release HD version that seems unlikely (retails for $59). Maybe the HD will go on sale for black friday or something and come down to $50 each, then I'll upgrade.

@@tjmarx Here in UK the HD one is £34 in Argos. The 4K one £50+. I don't really care about 4k so much. Maybe I will just get the HD or wait till the price comes down.

I just bought the be HD Chromecast and it looks amazing compared to the original which you couldn't do much with, like the original debut model. This looks so much more advanced and I'm looking forward to trying Google tv, it looks really convenient and user friendly with the remote, being able to speak into it to search for what you want. Nice. I own 1st gen Chromecast (it was a gift), and Chromecast Ultra (bought it), and I like them. My TV projectors (one Epson with LCD, and one Acer with DLP) doesn't support 4k or 60Hz, or HDR, so I am happy anyway. Speed is fine, no issue. I will update eventually, as I do want AV1 decode, and this new Chromecast is an option, but I think I will wait for the 4k version with AV1 for a bit, and then upgrade one of my projectors to high contrast, 4K projector, which are already at decent prices.

I would really like to hear how the new chromecast performs in comparison to a raspberry pi.
I have one connected to my TV and noticed that RetroArch doesn't really run all that well, retropi is a little bit too clunky for me and steamlink also doesn't perform all that well.
So does steamlink run fluently with it? How about NDS Games on RetroArch? And probaby most important: Can you connect it to a NAS? As my roms are all on one.

How's the CEC support? Can I control volume with the included remote? Can I turn on/off the tv with the remote or the remote app on my phone?

Yeah I enjoy my Chromecast with Google TV 4K device and I actually have 2 of them. I prefer the 4K and plus I have 2 4K TVs also. And I love the Google TV UI. I know people talk about the storage problem but for me I don't have a lot of apps Plus I'm not subscribed to every app like other people. I only have 7 apps install. And my storage is still at 2.2 GB of space left.

Can you do a video on cloud gaming? I am thinking of buying a console for my son, but cannot see too much of a point as he only 7y old and I dont think the mrs will be happy of him playing God of War or smth. I cannot realy see why I should spend anything like PS5 or Xbox X\S if I can run same stuff on something like this thing in the video. What about the latency? Will he be alright playing something like Minecraft Dungeons?
Last time I had a controller in my had was odd 30y ago...

  • @TN_AU

Not sure about this new model, but the original 4k model, if your using OTG hub, the power supply that comes with the device is not up to scratch and will not work. You need a beefier power supply.
Also Google has disabled the ability to WRITE to the usb stick/memory card attached to the OTG hub. Its fine of your READING, like loading roms, but if your emulator requires to save files in the same folder as your roms on the attached usb stick/memory card on the OTG hub, this will not work. I did a lot of troubleshooting back when thr 4k version was released. Files will only be saved to specific folders on the storage device, depending on the app.

I was wondering about the Hub too, in your research, did you find one that worked well with the 4k version?

    • @udance4ever
      @udance4ever ปีที่แล้ว

@@treysnyder3536 any USB-C hub should work - get the ports u want - I particularly wanted:
      1) wired Ethernet
      2) headphone jack (for iPadPro in a pinch)
      3) USB-A for webcam (Duo)
      4) another USB for additional app installs
      5) micro SD for ROMs
      6) USB-C PD

Well I've been using the older chromecast on my crt tv and it's been good. I was thinking about upgrading to one like this, so I don't have to stream off my phone. I'm not sure I don't like seeing ads on these streaming devices.

Raspberry can does. Windowsarm and linux can be used on it. And it has lower specs.
Yes theoretically it works on this too. But someone has to hack and adapt the software and device.
