    Thumb's up for taking the time to show-n-tell that old school rig. When I was a kid back in the '60s, I always had a yearning for one of those bare-boned analog metal detectors advertised in the backs of comic books...probably nowhere near as nice as that one, since I seem to recall they were asking only $19.99 or maybe $29.99. But of course that was a near-unattainable fortune back then for a 10 year old. By coincidence, one of that very model of elderly Garrett ADS II recently came up on my local Craigslist, and looking into it brought me here. I guess I just like old tech. Hell, I've still got 8-Tracks I listen to. As for "swinging", I'm generally only a casual beachcombing detector while on vacations. Being an old dude now, I believe that may be required by law, along with socks and sandals. I generally use an old Fisher 1280X "Aquanaut" rig (another Craigslist find) or one of those cheapo Harbor Freight 9-Function ones that I got for under $40 a few years back, so my kid could join me on the beach if he liked. Surprisingly, that Harbor Freight one stood up pretty well in a head-to-head test against the Fisher unit, which they still sell new for about $600. But if anyone were to ask me about a "starter detector", I'd recommend trying that Horror Fright one first. If the hobby "takes", then you can always upgrade. If not, you won't be out several hundred bucks. Or, just snag an older one like yours off Craigslist, and see if you like it. Thanks again for the looksee, and happy hunting!

      @@RandyECombs Currently $64.99, even "post-Inflation" those Harbor Freight ones still go on sale from time to time for 40-something bucks. I gotta admit they really ain't half bad once you get the hang of them. In fact, sometimes instead of taking the trouble to rig up my fancier if elderly Fisher 1280X with its gunslinger belt rigamarole to hang its heavy main control unit on my hip to give my arm a break, I'll often just grab that nice light Horror Fright rig if I'm just going out for a quick beachcombing. It's also something to toss into the trunk or to use as a lender. Still, much as I enjoy interpreting those analog squawks, beeps and pips, I'm toying with the idea of getting something with those newfangled digital numeric metal type and depth readouts and all those other bells and whistles. I've heard some semi-decent things about those entry-level Nokta Simplex rigs for slightly under or about $200. They're also fully-submersiblly waterproof, like my Fisher, but not the Harbor Freight one. Only its coil is dunkable. But I'd say that if one model of detector generally comes up most often recommended in forums and online reviews as "Best Starter Detector", it's actually a descendant of your ancient green gurken, the Garrett ACE 300, which can generally be had in the mid-$200s

      Garrett was my first worthy detector purchase in the 1980’s after owning a cheap Radio Shack (Realistic brand) detector. In the first week of owning the Garrett Deepseeker, I found a buried safe with $2,300.00 (1987 valuation) in gold and silver coins in it on an abandoned late 1800’s homestead property. That was the experiece of a lifetime and cemented my dedication to the our hobby / lifestyle of detecting!

      I bought it at a yard sale for 5 dollars and sold it on ebay for 180 dollars. Definitely too heavy and to shitty to use 😁

    does that detector take a battery tray? just ordered one for my Deepseeker. Does it just plug into some pins inside the detector. Just got off phone with Garrett service rep and the manual they pointed me to doesn't mention how to install batteries.

    • @RandyECombs
      @RandyECombs  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You have to unscrew the bottom, remove a tray that holds them in and then change them.

      @@RandyECombs heah, thanks. I'm ordering a new tray so after I install the batteries I'm supposed to screw the tray in place? Does the tray plug into a multi-pin connector? I see one in there.
