  • while I wait for the Nokta impact to come out, I figure I would do some videos on my older detectors
Trying out the Garrett Master Hunter CX metal detector. I was very impressed with its faster recovery speed over nails. I feel like it did very well on the nail board test and recovery speed test. The depth is great for the 12.5" coil and the average for the 8" coil. I really like the meter as it has alot of good info. I do have the added arm cuff for the machine which is an add on. I would not like to swing one of these for a few hours with out the arm cuff. I tested both coils for the Garrett Master Hunter cx and the 10.5 is my favorite, great depth and seperation. The 8" coil is a good all around coil. Its an interesting older metal detector made around 1990 I think. Enjoy and thanks for watching.

The Garrett analog CX units had a unique pinpoint system. You had to hold the coil directly over the center of the target with the pinpoint touchpad pressed for 3 seconds, release and then the needle will indicate the depth.
The coil you're using first is 12.5"

Hey Jermiah, I have been detecting with this detector for about 20 years! I still detect with it...As a matter in fact, this is my primary detector right now.... (getting ready to up-grade to a Garrett AT Pro). I tell you....I don't swear, but this detector when used right....can score alot of finds as much as the expensive machines out there! I have found rings, coins, relics...man! all sorts of things with just the standard 8.5" coil it came with. That coil and machine are spot on bro! It will always be my main detector..."SIMPLY LOVE THAT MACHINE!!!!!" Garrett makes (my opinion) the worlds best detectors! Hold on to that machine Jermiah! From what I noticed on the net (EBay)....these are RARE machines...and I found that if you do find one for sale they are not working (for parts), or the ID TARGET ANALOG DISPLAY is not working! Peace be with you and your family!....NEVER let that detector out of your sight!...Lololol! "The power of a Garrett detector!:....Ahhhhhhhhh. :-)

SPOT ON about the Garretts Seth. You're right. The ADS Deepseekers(1977 for the first one) are almost ((impossible)) to beat in (every) category of performance, even by the most powerful modern machines. Only the top Minelabs, (some) of the Nexuses, (maybe) some of the XPs and a host of others can outperform them but (STILL), they can't outperform the ADS Deepseeker in (ONE) very important category. And that is, their sensitivity to the smallest/deepest (individual) targets because the modern types are tuned more for recovery speed/record response times, not as much to the ultra-small objects at incredible depths that the old T/Rs enjoy and the motion VLF requirements of most, if not all modern detectors, amplify this oversight and flaw even more so. The only problem is that they the ADS Deepseeker was a battery-hungry machine and it required the six 9-Volts in tandem but WOW, could they go deep and MAN were they extremely sensitive to VERY small and VERRY deep targets!! Only the better Whites and Fishers from this time period could compete with the Garretts. Not much on the market, past or present could touch them in terms of sensitivity to very, very small targets at great depths and they were universally adjustable, manually-fine-tuned ground balance which helped give them the edge on depth over the vast majority of modern machines. And they didn't have to be waved around like the newer VLF (motion) detectors. No need to have to use a pinpointer. They only hummed a steady hum when they were stopped right over the targets as they were non-motion.

Yes I agree totally with you , the CX 2 is another GEM of a machine from Garrett. The styling and feel of these machines is great. The design & styling IMHO physically was and still is unique and way ahead of it's time for any metal detector. They look fabulous. When they get faults on the PCB few techs can fix them though (so it seems at least) that is certain, I guess the Garrett company may be able to fix a bad one. I have had two cx 2 's that a so called professional" Detector Engineer" could not fix.The board is not too good to work on , the tracks lift too easy and the board crammed full of components. Made in Hong Kong too so it says on the PCB.. That's a shame because the Garrett Company could have made better boards themselves in my opinion for what it's worth.

My unit beeps twice then the rest of the buttons don’t do anything and it doesn’t scan. I changed the batteries. I used cheap ones but I feel like they should at least work.

I am using a Tesoro Vaquero, I had a Bandido, I need to update to a different machine but I know them both very well and I'm very comfortable and confident in them.

John Ballard the Vaquero is a great detector...I have always been very impressed... Right now I have a Vista smart by deeptech ...I really belive it has an edge on the vaquero when it comes to depth and seperatly speed...the only down fall is the disc...the disc knob only disc out to foil.......but it has a great two tone audio for ferrous and non ferrous that I wish tesoro still did !

Jeremiah, I have to say, that's the thing I also wish DeepTech had designed just a (little) better was their inadequate discrimination and it makes it near impossible to use my Vista Gold in high-trash parks unless I want to be on my hands and knees digging up every piece of aluminum foil, lol. These machines are more suited to relic hunting in open fields and British pastures. I asked Tesoro through an email why they did away with the two-tone such as with their landmark Golden Umax and furthermore, why they stopped making that model altogether but they (never) replied back. Oh well, it's their loss especially if they just blatantly ignore their customer base and especially their wants and needs. My Golden Umax went incredibly deep until I went to try to tweak the internals(which can't be done on these as they are solid state) and ended up yanking the 6, (very) thin, main, delicate wires right off the back of the circuit board. MAN, that sucked. If I ship it to Tesoro, they will fix it though, but it's not a cheap repair and may be a little over $120. I'm sure they would need to make sure it was re-calibrated too. It actually, if I recall more and more, had appx. 4 or five tones though.

Hello John. Try a Tejon, or even with your Vaquero, use the elliptical coil or even a 3" 'sniper' coil. Don't worry, they'll go pretty much, just as deep. Simply lower your discrimination and increase your sensitivity but just make sure your ground balance knob is retuned to a 'hotter' setting but not too hot on these as they can be prone to detecting minerals if they are tuned too hotly to the ground. The lower the discrimination, the faster these Tesoros are with recovery speeds as well as their response times to individual targets. They were designed by the key designer of Fisher Laboratories metal detectors and the Tesoro company was founded in the early 80s by him so they behave very similar to the older Fishers. The newer Fishers are designed by an entirely different company that designs/makes Bounty Hunter, Whites, Titan, Teknetics and are all designed by First Texas. Tesoros still use the earlier designs Fisher used before Fisher was bought out by First Texas in the mid to late 90s.

Hey Jeremiah, try a Garrett ADS Deepseeker T/R (Ist deepseeker model ;1977). These are REALLLLLY deep. I airtested a dime at 12" and a quarter at appx. 14.5" but the (only) downside is that it requires 6 9-Volts in a slide-in tray in the back of the unit and it uses the battery power in one outing. Have to use an alkaline battery re-charger just to keep from having to spend a fortune on 9-Volts. By the way Jeremiah, the size of the coil is not a good judge of depth because the larger the coil, the less they are designed to 'see' individual coins and the larger coils will actually miss shallower coins. They are more designed for buried cache hunting. Example; ADS deepseeker with stock 7" coil, detects a quarter at 14.5". Your success is more in how powerful the transmit circuitry is in (any) given detector, not in the size of the coil. Larger coils do not hardly ever equal more depth for individual coin targets. This has (always) been a marketing trick of the MD companies. I can go down to 8-9" on a dime with my 3.5" 'snooper' coil mounted to my Fisher 1270X. These coils are also better and almost perfect for finding coins in tight, trashy spots where larger coils and even most regular modern VLF motion detectors can't detect and end up missing these elusive coins and other objects because the trash masks these coins hiding just below the trash or in between the trash. Iron also causes masking problems but the older non-motion T/Rs and IB(Induction Balance) detectors can hover right over iron/trash-masked targets and can pinpoint them immediately without even having to move the coil. The T/Rs normally null-out(make silent; ground out) the iron trash as well. This was an early form of discrimination. The T/Rs are also the best on land for VERY small gold nuggets and (extremely deep) items lost by people. For example; 17 caliber zipper bullets. These are very small and are found VERY deep with a Garrett ADS Deepseeker; appx. 8-10" deep. It will even find straight pins at this depth, lol. They are VERY loud and give a SLAM, BANG-ON positive sound when they detect anything. These were the models, Charles Garrett used when he MD'd. They will happily make a (vast) majority of modern detectors pale as far as performance and will detect stuff, not even a Teknetics T2 can detect. The Whites 6000 Di G.E.B.(Ground Equalization Balance) Series 2s and Pro models were also' right up there' too, in terms of sheer brute power.

I've been detecting for about 30 years. I guess I'm not the norm because I don't care if a detector has a numeric target id. I just want fast recovery and good depth. I found out that by digging all repeatable signals, I find a lot more and better targets. I guess I'm a dinosaur
