- This metal detecting / TH-cam community is amazing … a new friend and subscriber contacted me and said that he wanted to send his vintage Garrett metal detector to me, he wasn’t using it anymore and wanted it to go to a good home. I was absolutely floored by this random act of kindness. In this video I put batteries in this 35+ year old machine to see if it will fire up and take it out on a test drive, all in the name of fun. I plan on retiring this to my detecting room / man cave as a nice vintage display piece. Ever appreciative Keith, thanks so much! Join me on my adventures as I unearth my little buried treasures. Thank you for posting this! I found plenty of targets with my Deepseeker - mostly nails and old bottle caps but sometimes mercury dimes and Indian head pennies. I still have mine but haven't used it for years.
I believe the Garrett ADS Deep seeker you have was built from 1979-1982. It was meant to be swept in the VLF all metal motion mode primarily to find a target and then switched(via hand grip toggle) to TR discriminate non motion mode for discrimination. These units had a very deep all metal mode if the ground balance was set correctly. Many of these armed with a large coil recovered many Civil War relics in the early 1980s by relic hunters.

@@yerdigginitmetaldetecting I had one in the mid 80's and Michael is correct in how to use it.I found many deep small coins here in Canada including many silver Canadian nickels they are half the size of a US silver dime. It was a great unit.
In the 1980s that was one of the best you could buy,I well and truly paid for mine many times over!

This brings back some memories. I cut my teeth on this detector in the mid 1970"s. I still have it and would not part with it for any amount. Once I discovered "reverse discrimination" my DeepSeeker ADS rewarded me handsomely. Still, I wished I had purchased the Garrett GroundHog also. Yeah, this makes me an old fart but, we were all young back in those days. Thank you for making this video.

I had the same garrett detector years ago , but after a while I had trouble with it,, so i sold it to a guy at work years ago & he fixed it up himself & got it working again,, he told me he was very happy with it. A few months later he retired from work & toid me he was hooked on metal detecting and loved useing it all the time.
How cool and kind , I have my late Fathers c-scope from the early 70's the kids still use it on the beach.
Now that was cool and fun to watch. Thanks for taking us along.

With that detector you have to start out manually setting the balance with that thumb button and that side control know. When you halance it you have to level that needle on the dial to the balanced position because the ground may either show its hot with minerals "positive" or iron "negative" on the initial ground reading before you balance it. After that it can somewhat track on it's own fairly well. Then after balancing it you tune it using the push button and the sensitivity dial and that sends the signal down deep and makes it able to see small coin size targets. That coil is a little small to get past 5 to 6 inches for a quarter and 3 to 4 on dimes. I did really well in the late '70's to early '80's with Garrett's & White's detectors. It makes me want to do a few videos using some vintage detectors just for fun and old memories

I did this last Summer with my Compass Yukon 77B and it's on one of my earlier vids. They were cool looking machines back then but a bit on the heavy side. Mine held 12 AA batteries...lol GL&HH
I just got the one on the way 77B automatic should be fun to play around with.

I believe when you run it in manual mode correct me if I'm wrong you have to turn it 6 to 8 in above the dirt above the ground and then lower it down there's a lot to learn about it

I have one of these and don't use it anymore. It was very good in its day. It is heavy when compared to today's technology. I would like to get a more up today detector.
I went on a ring recovery today for an older guy. I don't usually accept anything for this other than a thank you but after I found the ring he insisted I take his old detector he used many years ago. Yep It is a Deepseeker. Only thing is its missing the battery container. Thanks for the video.
Cool video. I have an old Compass Coin Hunter II hanging on my wall. I doesn't work, but neat to look at. I've been keeping my eyes peeled for good deals on other vintage machines. Good luck with your digs.

THE OLDER machines found millions in sunken ships and gold coins on the beaches of FLORIDA years ago,then it was hi tech,my favorite for gold is my cm4 whites coinmaster ,it finds it down to very small,swarms of flake

The instruction book has detailed instructions about how to adjust this detector. I just happened to run across the instructions this afternoon.
Great video brings back memories and back then that was a 500 dollar machine!

I was stationed at the Naval base Gitmo in 1974 and was the first to use a metal detector there. I first used a Garrett Money Hunter BFO, but changed to a Money Hunter TR. My silver finds were almost unbelievable: $200.00 silver face value in the first month, which included $40.00 in the little ditch between the old White Hat enlisted club and the road by the piers. The drunk sailors would try to jump the ditch in the darkness...….all kinds of silver spilled out of pockets! The club is now called the Windjammer.
Only one other sailor started detecting after I showed him how. I left Gitmo in Dec., 1976, with almost $1,000 in silver and about $3,000 in other coinage. Dang, what a hobby!
It really was fun that was my old machine.

I have a couple old Garrett machine: a TR Discriminator and Freedom Ace Plus, and an old White's Spectrum XLT that I still use from time to time.
There is a button at the tip of the hand grip. That is your pinpoint button. While holding the button down, move the coil around until you get the max reading on the meter. Your target will be under the center of the coil.
The XLT is a fantastic relic machine.

@@yerdigginitmetaldetecting with the right settings, those older machines can get the same or maybe better depth than the newer ones. Thwy just can't tell yoy what it might be.
I found more gold rings and earrings with the inexpensive Freedom Ace Plus than I have with the AT Pro. Probably because it makes me dig every target. What is rejected as foil or pulltab by new machines might be small gold, so watch that disceimination setting.
Once you get used to it, you'll like it... well, maybe not how heavy it is and how much batteries are these days.
If you plan not to use it for a while, take the batteries out, or the contacts might begin to corrode.

I have the ADS III master hunter and its the best ever! I beat all the high tech new ones in various competitions and found gold also! If you own an old GARRETT ADS....NEVER sell it cos its the best

Still the best detector out there. I've got buckets of civil war ammo and some nice coins dating back to 1781.

I used one of these in the 80s. It was my go to detector for gold. Back then this was the most used detector in the goldfields here in Australia. Its actually very sensitive and it does discriminate very well but you have to read the manual.. yea I know the manual. It has to be ground balanced properly and the threshold has to be set correctly. Once you do all that you will find its not the far behind a modern detector in sensitivity. I purchased a dead one a few weeks ago and have now repaired it for the purpose of doing a direct sensitivity comparison with the equinox 800

interesting video. someone just gave me a garrett similar to this one but it doesn't say ADS. It says deepseeker vlf/tr and not sure when it was made.
I have one just exactly like it and it still works. I lost the tuning instructions and had to download it off the internet.

It would be a shame to hang that fine machine up in a man cave bud. It was , and still is a great machine. U can download a manual for it. If tuned properly , it can still give the newer plastic detectors a run for there money. I still use a whites 5000D series2 detector , and make a lot of deep good finds with it. With all detectors , it's just a matter of learning them. Don't give up on that Garrett , after u learn it , u will be surprised how well it does. Good video , and happy hunting.

also if I recall there's different ways because you'll have to tune that machine for depth and it will go 8 to 10 inches.

Nice video. I to have a groundhog and a ADS3 deepseeker. The ADS3 ( big brother to urs) in VLF is a very deep machine. Liked ur video , but u really need to tune it correctly, it would do much better . The main thing that bothered me on ur video was , dude , why the man hole cover size plugs? Both of my Garrett’s will pinpoint pretty precisely , I rarely make plugs over 3 or 4 inches. Learn to pinpoint correctly , and u will be a believer. I hope u learn it well , and make another video. Really curious to see how u do then. Good luck to u.
Hello Yerdigginit Metal Detecting.
I have to try to encourage you to try 'resetting' your settings again. I have exactly the same detector and when I 'played around' with the settings, I was actually able to get mine to detect a dime at about appx. 13" from the stock coil, when waving an unburied dime in front of the bottom of the coil. Your ground balance which, if I remember correctly, is on the toggle switch, up on the front of the handle, so (if) you're properly ground balanced to the ground minerals, you can fine-tune it to run 'hot' as they call it, meaning that you have it supertuned like a Tesoro Vaquero. Play around with your settings, a little more with your settings and you should become happy(er) with the results! Well, Good Luck and (Happy Hunting)!

Perhaps I can send you a voicemail on how to tune that machine I noticed you headed in automatic mode should head that one button it down into manual you can do different things with it. I did find some silver with it 1906 v nickel 1916 Barber dime few rings but you're more serious at it than I am good luck Brian hope you find a ton of stuff and you will too and I will keep watching your videos love em.
If I recall right the button at the end of the handle where your thumb is at is at er mode which is discriminate.
And if you flick it the other way it goes into I believe vlf very low frequency and I think that means it doesn't discriminate against anything. I sure wish I could find the manual I know it's here somewhere I will keep looking Brian good luck buddy.

That machine is very well build by todays standards. Also very heavy I bet.
It is a bit heavy and has an armrest that I did not find yet. But when I find it I will be shipping it to Brian.

Learn to adjust it
When you're out in the middle of the mountains pecking at plate tectonic heaves that contain quartz - you don't want or need any of that silly high-tech discrimination. What you want is deep penaltrayshkin. Something that just says "There's something metallic in there!" Something that digs DEEP. That's how you make money. This old detector is fine for that. Just hack in a new lithium - ion battery pack and a charge controller.

I have the garrett ads3,,,,and you totally are not using it correct,,,,the ground balance,,,and discrimination has to be adjusted,,,and is more sensitive than most modern machines,,,,you get used to deciphering what the target is , by sound,,,and meter deflection,,,,I'll bet when adjusted properly,,,if its running right,,,,I could out detect any modern machine,,,in depth,,,discrimination,,,and selectivity,,,,,I'm sure the owners manual is online,,,and theres no target id,,,,you get to know the targets by sound,,,,if you learn how to correctly use it,,,you'll find you have an extremely sensitive machine,,,a windfall for you,,,,check it out ,,,I promise,,,youll see,,,,have fun!!!!!great vid,,,thanks!!!!😎
