Having watched several Trekspertise presentations, I find then to be the best written and executed video blogs I've ever seen. I'm seriously impressed by the depth of insight and vision on display in these videos and I thank you for the rich source of thought provoking material. This is the kind of team I dream of working with...
I would argue for point 7, not only the starship crew's ranks fall into this, but also the alien races. The honourable and brutal Klingons, the treacherous and mysterious Romulans, the logical and emotionless Vulcans, etc.
I know they do, but they're often presented as not having them. It's what their image is, and characters on occasion have to be reminded of the fact that the Vulcans aren't exactly as their image would suggest. Same with not all Ferengi being greedy profitmakers, not all Klingons being honourable, etc.
My wife and I stayed up 'til the wee small hours one night discussing the relationship between science fiction and poetry. One deconstructs and reimagines life; the other, language. I'm a huge science fiction fan with a passing interest in poetry - she, vice-versa, so it was a really interesting conversation. I'm loving these analyses of yours. Even when I don't agree, they provide a lot of food for thought. Keep it up!
I love this channel! thank you so much for posting. I'm in the fanfic community, and we talk a lot about how fanfic is our modern folklore -- stories by the general population, for the people, about the people's interest and concerns, without corporate interference. So, it's pretty cool to see that even our mass media has roots in our oldest folklore. I just wanted to add -- in uni, I minored in English lit, and I was repeatedly told that epics have to represent all of society, from the lowest commoner to the royals. And I think our big tv shows, esp the newest ones, really do that. Star Trek had eps like Lower Decks, and DS9 did a good job of showing war orphans, religious figures, military leaders, and lower ranking officers. I think most of the examples you showed did show the breadth of society in this way. Apocalypse/invasion movies in particular like to show how the disaster affects EVERYONE.
Trekspertise is the only TH-cam channel I can watch over and over again. This video is reminiscent of a History Channel special. It's already about the right time for a half hour slot on TV, once you allow for commercials, of course. I would love to see this elaborated on and turned into a History Channel mini series. This is my second favorite Trekspertise video, just behind "The Case for Gul Dukat." Those will both have to take a step down soon, though. Once that Elim Garak video is published, I won't be able to get enough of it, I'm sure.
Bravo, very well written and executed. Probably one of the most intelligent and thought provoking videos on all of TH-cam. You've also made me fall even deeper in love with all that is Star Trek.
It seems to me that our natural inclination towards epic poetry is made most obvious in how eager fanbases are to catalogue and connect all of the characters, settings, and events of their favorite fictions, and is also why violating canon is so annoying to many of us lol While it doesn't wind up taking the form of Epic Poetry, these community-established canons serve to satiate that same need we have to more completely understand a fiction that we care so much about. One of the most important defining characteristics of epic poetry is that it takes place in a fleshed-out-setting that constantly hints at further legends, events, locations and so forth (often being things that the contemporary listen would be well aware of), and it is often as much about the setting and the culture as it is about the heroes. That is the void that fanbases seem most eager to fill which cannot otherwise be covered within the time constraints of television shows and films. Basically, it really appears that we're hardwired to make all worthy stories into full-length epic tales, whether or not the original source ever intended that.
I appreciate your work so much! Thank you for making these amazing and, frankly, beautiful videos! You are the only channel, I believe, that really gets Trek at its core!
Love the video. And just wanted to say that even though I could listen to you all day and wish there were more videos, I appreciate you taking your time to put the work into making really really good videos. :)
Your videos are excellent. Incredibly thorough and well-researched and impeccably put together. Thank you for sharing your insights and hard work with us! Also, at 15:59 you provided me with a nice surreal moment of shock when I saw my little city's very own Railroad Park being used as stock footage (I walk around it often.) Followed by another shot of Birmingham from Vulcan. Bonus!
*Your videos are always such a genuine treat.* I sit down to watch a geeky video about Star Trek and am left emotionally moved by your poignant perspective on Science Fiction and our rapidly changing world. Live long and prosper, you beautiful nerd.
Sweet video! I also love all the little funny details. Lots of TH-camrs are cutting that humor out because of time or laziness, but it's nice to see a channel doing more :)
The invocation (5.) for voyager is the 'spell' that is put on them by the caretaker who transports them to another quadrant on the other side of the galaxy. That invocation then becomes the theme (6.) of exploration and their long mission to get home.
Star Trek's invocation is the "To Bodly Go" speech at the beginning of the first two series. IT may be the captain saying it, but he's a mouthpiece for Gene. Gene is the muse, this is his vision, his baby. During his life, this was his story.
Trekspertise Thank you for your concern, it could be worse, and it will, unfortunately the protests have ceased and now the regime does what it wants but I guess life goes on. Anyway I really enjoy your videos and Star Trek, if I could I would support channels like yours!
The muse for Star Trek is the introduction and is set for the entirety of the Star Trek. “To boldly go where no man has gone before,” is a well known premise for all stories of exploration. It asks the questions: where are we going, what will we find, what dangers are there.
I have repeatedly attempted explaining this to people, but they inevitably get bored. Thank you for doing it so ... "engagingly" lol. Star Wars as a Campbellian quest they get, but I'm so excited to have this video as a resource - perhaps even more as an explanation of sci-fi as our culture musing to itself about itself, and why that's so valuable. Thank you so much, your work is always fantastic.
I loved this. Ahbsolutely fahscinating (MST... anyone... anyone... okay, never mind). But I have a question about epic Greek poetry that may or may not have a bearing on your topic. I make no claims to a great understanding of Greek poetry. But several years ago (1997?) I listened to unabridged readings of THE ILLIAD & THE ODDYSSEY by both Sir Ian McKellen & Sir Derek Jacobi. I believe they were the Fagles translations, which were very hot at the time. In THE ILLIAD (I don't remember it as clearly in THE ODYSSEY) there were numerous points where the same passage about roasting meat & preparing libations was repeated. My question is: Do these references harken back to when the stories were told from memory by wandering poets as a mnemonic, either as an end point or to pickup a different story thread? To try to tie it into your thesis, these could be Captains Logs or references to previous episodes (or even previous series). The simple fact is, I've never gotten a clear answer to this, & since you seem to have a good handle on it, I'm hoping you can clarify it for me. Apologies for the ridiculously long post.
I also see a similarity to Grimm's Fairy Tales: Teaching a moral lesson through a compelling, easy to understand phantasy story set in a different time. Like the old fairy tales, many Star Trek episodes stand the test of time and still hold up ("Measure of a man", "Darmok").
I have absolutely love what you do. Your videos are the best Trek content on the internet aside from Trek itself. Thank you so much for making these and continuing to make good content. May I offer some constructive criticism? Escape is pronounced Ess-cape not eck-scape. You are so good at these things please correct your pronunciation of that word.
8:57 Do you consider everything in medias res if it doesn't cover the dawn of existence or something? If Star Trek did cover the dawn of human space travel you could just say even that isn't medias res because it didn't cover the thing before it.
I would suggest you to make a video about the different instances of "official" first contact between species shown in the series. This would exclude all the times that aliens have travelled to a world in incognito mode, or that the contact was lost in the history of that world. I'm talking about, for example, of things like the "official" first contact between the Vulcan and humans, or between the federation and the Klingons.
DS9 and B5 were one story but then split up into two shows on different networks due to differences between them. There are still a lot of similarities.
To Be Continued I thought I read an interview where JMS explicitly confirmed the mutual origins of both shows, but I can not find it anymore. A video on that would be very welcome :)
"En media res" is something of a scholarly misnomer created by the passage of time. The Iliad and Odyssey do no begin, "in the middle of events" simply because that is some rule as to how Epics were written, but because they were only one "chapter" of a much larger collection of interconnected (oral) poetry that depicted history of the Greeks, only a handful of the most well liked survived the fall of the Roman Empire. There were hundreds of "Epic poems" including ones that depicted the beginning and end of the Trojan War, as well as numerous other events in Greek history, and indeed multiple ones that covered the same events. It would be like, 1000 years from now, if only one book from the Lord of the Rings survived, or only one of Nolan's Batman films, etc. and people started to say that "Epic Fiction" of the 20th century always started "in the middle of the story."
The eight pillars of epic poetry fit even better into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I would even view the movies as being for these well-established characters from comics what Homer’s particular writing did for the well-established tales of Odysseus.
Many of the comments indicate that you didn't frequently post videos. But Iam still behind many of the videos on your channel 😀 quite a fun journey! Great videos. Looking into your patreon. Also, something that was never predicted :)
as both a Star Wars and star trek fan I was checking along for my other favorite sci-fi property, yes it fits, and then I realized game of thrones fit the bill as well and perhaps Harry Potter too. what I did find interesting is a significant shift in Star Wars the Original Trilogy is a black and white tale of morality where the new trilogy introduces shades of gray. PS, Han should have known better: Never be the mentor in a Heroes Journey. it's the one guaranteed way you will lose plot armor.
With the blinding of the cyclops, it wasn't the blinding itself that doomed Odysseus as the tale clearly implies he did the right thing by finding a clever solution. It was, instead, the hubris and pride he displayed in taunting the cyclops as he sailed off, sharing his name and such, that allowed the cyclops to recruit his father Poseidon to avenge himself upon Odysseus. Had he said nothing and merely sailed off quietly, the cyclops would never have known who was to blame for his injury and the crew might have survived. If there's one thing the Greeks loved to punish in their stories, it was hubris. "Don't prance about like a prideful idiot when you've successfully pulled off a clever ruse against powerful enemies" strikes me as being very reasonable advice lol

Totally agree. My favorite was their coverage of the Borg. I mean, giving that AI plague a totally comprehensive timeline. NICE!
Yeah he just needs to start pronouncing the word Escape properly and he would have everything perfect.
If that is what you choice to focus on so be it...?...}=: But what if its a slight speech impediment that only shows up on that word...?...}=:
I would argue for point 7, not only the starship crew's ranks fall into this, but also the alien races. The honourable and brutal Klingons, the treacherous and mysterious Romulans, the logical and emotionless Vulcans, etc.

That CGP Gray reference made me smack that like button so hard!
So I wasn't the only one noticing it :)
Thank you for this excellent video essay. I've always thought that good sci-fi (such as ST can be) is to us what epic was to our ancestors.
