  • This is a tutorial on how I tie a Purple McBain Salmon fly. Purple seems to be a very effective color for Atlantic Salmon and this payer certainly doesn't lack in that color, I hope you enjoy!

You should give us a tour of your tying room/table setup since you have mentioned before you usually film at your kitchen table. Just a thought

Nice. Squirrel tail can sometimes be slippery, so I’ll bet adding the super glue on the wing stages really helps durability. I’ve only tied a few of this type of salmon flies but recently tied a large batch of flies like Mickey Finns & Black Nosed Daces & found gluing at each wing stage really helped with keeping the colors separate.

I’ve always loved the color purple on flies, but you never see it on old salmon flies. The only famous one I know about is the Purple Emperor. And there’s just a tiny bit of purple on it. The reason you don’t see purple (I think), is because of the dye needed to create purple. Back before modern dyes, purple dye came from snails. It was very hard to come by. That’s why you only saw royalty wearing purple. It was just so expensive to make.
