  • Today I just felt like playing on my gel plate and taking you along for the journey was an obvious decision for me. As it turns out things didn't exactly go to plan but every stumbling block is an opportunity to learn and make something new.
    This video was originally 1.5hrs long so I've edited all of the clean up sections out of it in an attempt to reduce the viewing time......believe me, you've missed out on nothing except me cleaning up gel plates and paint.

      I am old enough that I am of the "Captain Kangaroo Generation." Almost everyday, he was doing something crafty with a cylindrical "Quaker Oats" container. I was always begging...ok, ok I was always whining to my mother that she should buy Quaker Oats so that I could make a cute piggy bank (the ones made from Clorox plastic bottles were spoil tacky😉). Poor woman, she pointed out that I did not like oatmeal, but logic is lost on a 5 year old. To dive down the rabbit hole of pop psychology, I think this early frustration was a seed that, along with other frustrations in the creative area, led to a lifelong interest in art and craft; funny how little bit incidents can set the course of a life.

    I love playing on my gel plate. I like the papers I get, even the ghosts and cleanup sheets. They all get used somewhere, I never have any left long term. I love using a variety of papers too. My favourite is calligraphy practice paper. It is semi transparent and gives an interesting effect on top of other elements. It's also very tough and stands up to gel printing very well. Corrugated card is one of my favourite mark making tools too. Very versatile. I like what the red oxide did to the green piece - good call. I was thinking that the keeper one looked like a professionally made piece like you would see in a pad. Well done. A very successful gell session in my opinion. Thanks for sharing. 😀

    I was so happy when you added the yellow to the blue prints! I kept thinking yellow and when you put the purple circles I felt like shouting "YELLOW" at the screen but my husband would have looked at me funny! 😃 I'm not particularly a fan of yellow itself but I love it with blue and with purple so I was thrilled when you decided that. And it made me feel good you would pick something I thought would work! The "jungle" prints are actually my favorites. Those are colors I love, fall(ish) colors - and even Kermit color! There is a lighter version (with more yellow in it that I call "gallbladder green" from my nursing experience) that I don't care for but your mix of yellow, green, and white came out beautiful, in my opinion. Thanks for sharing. I do love seeing your color combinations, mixtures and hearing your thought processes. Plus seeing things go from okay to not so sure to much better and ending up great is very encouraging for me! That's my usual transition if I don't just give up before I get there. Well, maybe not great in the end (for me) but worth keeping and using, anyway. TFS

    • @JennCadyFiddlyBits
      @JennCadyFiddlyBits ปีที่แล้ว

      Each color informs the next color. The basic color wheel with primary, secondary and tertiary colors should help when you are looking to compliment or accent colors. You can take your paints and put the pure of each color on one side of your paper in little “block” shapes, then put another color on the opposite side of the paper in the same size shape. Then, gradually mixing a little bit of each into the pure, and work your way toward the middle where you have a “half and half” mix of both colors. By half and half, I mean visually half and half, not quantity of paint because darks take very little to color something. Best thing to do is just try anything. If you don’t like the results, you can simply “keep going” until you do, or cut it up and use smaller pieces as accents in something else. One more tip. If you mix colors and get “muddy” colors that look like they have a grey ish cast to them, the quality of paint you are using is probably not good enough. Some companies cheat and put white in colors to make them look more “vibrant.” This causes problems when you go to mix colors together that you know should make secondary or tertiary colors.
      Good luck! Happy color mixing! ❤

      @@2011nschmidt I am by no means an expert, but my mother has been a fine artist my whole life and I learn so much from her regarding how to research and understand the tools and products we use to make art. (For example, a big myth is that acrylics are “safe” when they might not be. Some of the same toxic minerals go into acrylic paint as oil paint, and acrylics are water based, which allows your skin to absorb more readily than oil when on the skin.)
      It takes a lifetime to truly understand color theory, but her explanations have helped me with troubleshooting, as well as some of the experimentation I learned in my own art education. Happy to share my experiences with others. (Always growing and refining too, because I’ve learned that there’s no “secret formula,” just pushing the boundary using a basic technique “toolbox” and trying until I find something that I like!)
