Honestly, I’m super impressed. He’s pronounciation is 95% perfect. Just the y and oe is a bit sharp in some words. But honestly, sounds like he has an Afrikaans parent.

When you talk about church and how people speak English together even though the mass is in Afrikaans I thought about Latinos in the USA. Spanglish (which is different than what you're saying) is common here but I have seen younger Latinos responding in English to older Latinos speaking to them in Spanish and everyone understands each other. It's pretty interesting.

Alex learnt the Afrikaabs from the white Afrikaans speaking South Africans. I am what they call a colored person. It's not a derogatory word. It's a classification. We speak a different dialect, but we still understand each other fully.

I think the reason a lot of us can listen and understand afrikaans and not speak it is because of school we did it for almost 12 years so we do develop some sort of understanding i guess
