Completely unrelated but when you switched to Greek aftsr speaking Spanish, my brain started going "this sounds like Castilian Spanish but I can't understand anything".
My brain does this all the time. I have serious problems with this. Sometimes I have no idea whether I'm speaking Spanish or Greek to people, I only realise when I see them looking blankly at me that something is wrong!
This is very frequent. I get really confused when I get back to Spain from Greece. I'm not quite sure what people are speaking though I understand them.
While unrelated languages, the accent is similar. Greeks and Spaniards can speak each others languages with similar accents. I am Greek-American. I took a few years of Spanish and was often confused for a native Spanish speaker. Also, Alex's ability to speak Greek is insane. He sounds like a native Greek speaker. My mind is blown.
I had similar experience when I visited Madrid. I didn't know Spanish, but I thought the people around me were speaking Greek and I couldn't distinguish the words. This happened only in Spain. I have been to Mexico and Panama and there the intonation of Spanish is different.
Oh hey, it's the three languages I can speak/understand. I grew up speaking English and Greek and learned Spanish in school. My Spanish teacher was really good about having us not translate in our heads and that has definitely paid off. The verb I struggle with the most in Spanish is quedar because it has a million meanings depending on context.
Εγώ είμαι Ισπανός και έμαθα τα αγγλικά όταν ήμουν περίπου 35 χρόνων - τώρα μαθαίνω τα ελληνικά. Αυτές οι τρεις γλώσσες είναι οι αγαπημένες μου. La verdad es que nunca he pensado en los diferentes significados de “quedar” 🤔
I am native speaker level in Spanish (over 10.000 base words) because I learned it (100% passively) in childhood by watching a lot of TV series and movies in Spanish and by listening to songs with lyrics in Spanish, so I learned it naturally without even trying, and I have an automatic Spanish mode, just like I do in English, where I can automatically type / say what I want to say in Spanish / English without having to think at all, and I can understand nearly everything in Portuguese because I know Spanish, but I am intermediate level in Portuguese! Last year (in October or September) I started learning languages on my own, and I learned Dutch to an advanced level (over 8.000 base words) in about 4 months, and I also focused on Norwegian / Swedish / German / Icelandic / Welsh / French etc for a few months, and I am intermediate level in Norwegian / German / Swedish and beginner level in the other languages I’m learning, and also learning Hungarian and Breton and the other 4 Celtic languages! I don’t seem to translate a lot, especially when I am advanced level in a language, because I can understand the words in that language - like, I usually watch videos with Dutch subtitles (I use the translate to Dutch option) and I don’t translate the Dutch words to English in my mind because I can understand everything in Dutch, so I think it’s when one is a beginner or intermediate level in a new language that one has to translate the words to the first language in one’s mind, but that doesn’t normally happen when one is advanced level or native speaker level in a new language!
I highly recommend learning Dutch because it’s the prettiest language ever, with almost only very pretty / poetic words, just like English, and also Norwegian / Galician / Icelandic / Portuguese / Welsh / Gallo / Breton / Catalan etc - all these languages are so pretty, and pretty languages are easy to learn because one’s hern tends to remember the prettier and more distinctive words faster!
Dutch words are just so gorgeous, as pretty as the English words - they are too pretty not to know / learn! Great for poetry and lyrics! 83 of the prettiest words in Dutch are - ver, vlinder, verloren, feest, adem, vaste, veel, verdween, heel, het, heen, voorbij, vandaan, verven, domein, verwaald, drijfzand, lief, leegte, liefde, heerst, einde, zonder, weet, avond, vult, gekomen, centrum, moment, pad, loop, overheerst, vallen, twijfel, vinden, kelde, wald, ter, geweest, vrees, grenzen, verleg, rein, van, stellen, wilde, steeds, verstreken, evenbeeld, bleef, steile, vrede, stem, wens, net, tijd, stille, verwenst, zalig, ochtend, zilverreiger, weer, overwint, heerlijk, zin, hart, beweert, vanaf, kwijt, wolken, mes, verliezen, dwaling, verlaten, rede, trek, tuinhek, brand, verdien, blikje, vertellen, verder, vertrek etc!
Wow your greek accent is amazing! I am a greek that has just started learning spanish and i can also see that your spanish accent is excellent as well. Those two laguages are extremely close phonetically too so even though it is easier for us greeks and spanish ppl to learn to speak each others languages cause of the similarities, i can only imagine how hard it must be for a native english speaker to not get confused speaking between the two. I loved this type of video especially using these specific languages and i hope i can see more vids like this one in the future. Keep up the good work!
Also on the topic of the video on direct translation, english are so much integrated into everyday life in greece that most of the students in my class (including me) were subconsciously translating to spanish from english. So our teacher told us that if we have to do it, it is much better to translate spanish from greek in our minds because it is way more similar in structure and we would do less translation mistakes that way. But ultimately when learning a new language you are also learning through it, its people's culture and way of thinking. And i think that's the beauty of it
@@adisatlantis7647 It's very interesting that you say that because I just realised I've been doing that too. I'm also Greek, also very fluent in English and I've been learning Chinese. So in my head I've been translating from English to Chinese. It's probably because the class is in English in the first place but I hadn't even noticed I was doing that!
Hi there! I am Hungarian. I saw a video of you speaking Hungarian. You are great! I was born in 1991. I studied German in school for 10 and a half years, then I acquired an intermediate language exam. Nowadays I understand German ads quite well, although I haven't really used German language for 13 years, but unfortunatelly I can't really speak it properly. Back in those times most teachers didn't teach languages in a natural way, and rarely made us speak. The result of it was that most of us, at least me :) , always needed to translate in our heads while speaking. It was exhausting and embarrassing to speak in German. In the last 10 years I started using Duolingo, but didn't take my time to learn each language properly. So dedication is also needed. Finally I am studying Spanish for 1 year now on Duolingo, and I noticed that it is much easier and natural as it was in school, because I learn through sounds, phrases and grammar examples, so basically I learn whole sentences (patterns), and then I swap the words or grammar rules if I have another sentence to translate. I realized that I tend to translate the whole sentence instead of translating it word by word. It's refreshing! About 4 years ago I tried French on Duolingo and because of this "pattern"-learning I can still remember many example sentences, and I remember the spelling visually. By the way, I tried learning Japanese, Norwegian, Latin, Hebrew, Portuguese, Romanian and Russian, but sometimes less is more, so I'll stick with Spanish, yet. :)
You have the best Greek accent I have heard from a Brit by far. You practically sound native. Your Spanish is also really good and it's a challenging language as well for a British native. Respect!
Great video! One thing that helped me to stop translating was watching a movie in a language I don't understand with subtitles in the language I'm learning. The pace of the movie didn't give me time to translate and forced me to simply -understand- what I was reading. The movie that helped me when I was learning Spanish was L'inconnu du lac, it doesn't have too much dialogue and the dialogue isn't too fast. Cheers.
Te escuche hablar español y tienes un acento casi perfecto, muchas felicidades, hoy en dia hay muchos charlatanes dicen que hablan muchos idiomas y es mentira hablan un poquito de uno otro poquito del otro, tu si hablas muy fluido, de nuevo felicidades.
Fascinating video, Alex. I remember years ago going through the 'stop translating' barrier. I was spending my life trying to work out what I wanted to say in the foreign language before I spoke and obviously missing the moment in conversations and ending up saying nothing. Learning to just start speaking without knowing exactly how I was going to finish the sentence was an important point. I sometimes set myself a task to explain something to an imaginary person in a foreign language with just a general idea of what I'm going to talk about (not having tried to do it in English first) and I'll just start talking, then try and do the same thing in a different language. It's interesting to realise how you automatically say things in different ways in different languages when you're just talking not translating. I can't explain why but I noticed when I said 'не отличается от' in Russian I said 'es muy parecido a' when I was speaking Spanish about the same thing. Don't know why.
Ok, as everyone does this in this comment section I will do it as well. I grew up bilingual with Greek and German, learned English ofc and now I am finally learning Spanish as well (my gf is Spanish). Για να σου πω την αλήθεια, η προφορά σου στα Ελληνικά είναι τέλεια! Δεν καταλαβαίνω πως γίνεται να μιλάει κάποιος από την Αγγλία η γενικός κάποιος που η πρώτη του γλώσσα είναι τα Αγγλικά τόσο όμορφα και καθαρά και χωρίς λάθη, μπράβο!
I'm a native anglophone, I lived in Greece for 4 years and learned the language fluently. I speak it without an accent and often get confused for a Greek, with occasional problems stemming from not living in Greece and not understanding current expressions. It's not all that rare for people to achieve perfect fluency, for example Yiannis Varoufakis speaks English far more eloquently than any native speaker of English.
Hi, I' m from Poland and I bought your book yesterday. Today I revived it and I check autor and find your channel here and I don't know what can I say... my English is far from perfect and you 're motivated me to faster learning... I want to know thought one foreign language fluently. Wow ! I admire each person who known one or two language because for me studying language own is like an impenetrable wall... maybe your book help me better. Thanks, I'm going to start reading as soon as possible.
Do you notice the change in your voice when speaking different languages? It was really interesting for me. By the way, you're one of my biggest inspirations for learning languages. Thank's a lot.
It's true. I taught languages in a high school for many years and I used to often play my classes the video of Alex speaking ten or so languages to demonstrate the way his voice changed for each language, which is part of his success in achieving such good pronunciation. If you immitate native speakers successfully, you're voice will change to something slightly different. I also think our personalities change slightly too when we speak a different language.
There are cultural reasons as well. My bilingual friends use different voices when they speak the two languages they know. For example male English/Afrikaans speakers, tend to have a deeper voice when speaking Afrikaans. And female English/Afrikaans speakers tend to have a higher pitched voice compared to their English voice. I believe this is because strict gender roles are more prevalent in Afrikaans culture compared to English culture.
Haha there is a theory that when you’re speaking different languages, your personalities may also vary. And you proved that theory! The expressions and gestures that you use when you are speaking Spanish is completely different from you speaking English. I speak three languages (English, German and Chinese)and people sometimes tell me that I’m different in personality when I’m speaking English instead of my mother tongue.
This is incredible, I totally understood everything you said in Spanish because of my Romanian. I'd love to start my Spanish, I have 3 work mates who are from Venezuela and I can understand most of what they say to eachother, but my favorite accent is the real Spanish from Spain. She also send me an artical about well, what else, then Covid. I literally understood every word in the artical without studding Spanish at all. If that would have been in Russian it would have been impossible for me to understand, maybe with an exception of 1 or 2 words. I've learned English on my own, that is why I may have some mistakes in my spelling as I've learned English by hearing and talking only. I'd love to learn Portuguese as I am abel to understand somewhat of Portuguese as well so that would be great. Such a gorgeous language. I love French, I think these 3 for me are my top 3 favorite languages, awww and also Icelandic, I love the sound of that language as well, I have a few friends from there, and I fell in love with their culture language and foods. Beautiful country, worth visiting once in a life time if not more. British English however is my top top nb 1 love and I would probably never be happy with where I am English wise, as I've set the bar to high, maybe I should have moved to England for a while, some where in the county side, as I love nature so much and where people are warm and welcoming. Cheers for all the tips and secrets on how to learn new languages and I think you are doing a fantastic job with Spanish and Greek Hat off mate Cheers from Budapest
Im a native speaker spanish, that learn english (a little bit) by my own and Im being learning greek since the past 5 monts 😂 Its so mainfull see another person talking this 3 lenguagues ❤ Thank u
Hola!
I loved watching your video! It inspires me a lot to start with a new language. As a German native...well, no, that is not true. Better said Swiss German native I taught myself English and Spanish over the past years with my own tools and concepts because I realized I didn't do well learning a language (english in that case) at a language school. It didn't motivate me how they would do the classes so I tried to find my own strategy and it worked much better. I was able to apply it when I started learning Spanish. It's funny because at some point I was so confused when you would switch from one language to another (spanish/english since I have no clue when it comes to greek) in that video and I was like: holy moly, in what language is he talking now, what a mess in my head. ;-) Looking forward to watching more of your videos!! :-) P.s: I am a perfectionist when it comes to learning languages and you showed me once more that it just creates barriers and does not help at all. There is more, you can't enjoy the learning process and it should be fun and enriching.
Μιλάς πολύ καλά Ελληνικά και έχεις τέλεια προφορά!! Μπράβο σου για την σκληρή δουλειά!! Μαθαίνω κορεάτικα και ειδικά στο θέμα της της προφοράς I feel like I sound a bit stupid 😅 It’s definitely a struggle
I think the "going to sleep and waking up with the language" part would be the most useful if you can't do it ALL the time. I tend to process the last memories of the day the best and pick up where I left off the next morning. Dus even naar wat Nederlands luisteren maakt het verschil!
OMG! It's been so long since I've watched your last video and finally I've gotten the notification from such a great polyglotte like you again 😍❤️I really enjoy watching ur vids🙈❤️Bijî Kurdistan💚❤️💛 Visca Catalunya💜❤️💛 💪Llengua catalana❣️Llengua kurda💪 ✌️Visca la terra lliure❣️Bijî axa azad✌️ Bizi Euskal Herria💚⚪❤️ T'estimo Alex! ❣️ 🇬🇷❤️🇬🇷❤️🇬🇷❤️🇮🇱❤️🇮🇱❤️🇮🇱
Thank you very much for sharing your wisdom and keeping us motivated. Watching all the language nerds made me a little bit too motivated, actually. I started learning Spanish and German at the same time, for no reason at all. At the beginning, the progress was absolutely great, especially during the quarantine, I quickly became conversational. But now that I have more responsibility and less motivation, I am stuck. I am in this weird situation where I am constantly thinking that I have to drop one language, and study it later. By one language I mean German, ofcourse, since its way harder, as you probably know too well. But the thing is, when I study Spanish, I constantly feel guilty for not studying German. Anyways, sorry for writing a Ted Talk, but have you got any tips for managing two languages at the same time?
Thank you Alex! This is really fun to watch. I find that sometimes I get completely lost in words when I can't think in the target language but also drawing a blank in the other languages I know.. in a way suppressing the other languages I know. Do you also experience that too? How do you overcome it?
I'm a German native and speak English, I learn Russian now and dabble with Dutch. For learning Russian, especially vocab, I use German and English resources. That way the Russian word isn't linked just to my native language and so I avoid translating. And when I dabble with Dutch I do vocab from Russian. Perhaps one day I will realize it wasn't a good idea, but right now it feels right.
My mother tongue is English but I picked up Bangla and Hindi from my parents and school. I don't translate much when speaking but sometimes English always comes in even though I have the same experience speaking the language. 20 years I'm currently trying to learn German but worried about not knowing about the dative,Trennbar verbens imperative verbs. I wish it was as easy as me picking up the other ones lol.
alex: ''your mother tongue, basically i see it as your base. its your safe space where youre going to be able to always express everything you want to express.'' me:*been learning english for 12 years, spoken it many hours everyday for the last 3 years and are currently learning 3 other languages from english and not my native tongue. and are also changing to english mid sentence so i can be understood* well shait, do they have norwegian courses for norwegians here?
When you transitioned from Spanish to Greek, my Hispanic brain broke and I thought that I was having a stroke, then I immediately figured it out after you said “avtos”. I’m a native English speaker trying to learn Greek and improve my Spanish.
I learned english almost as a native language? Well I consider it one for me because I learned it from a young age and reached fluency probably at around 16 Other than interacting a lot in english spaces, I think that thinking in english helped me get to fluency Now words just "exist", I don't have to translate anything I remember when I first started thinking in english at around 14-15, every few sentences I couldn't remember a word. I went on google translate every time. Now I barely need to do this.
Good video Alex. My father comes from greek something like Tekilia Evia i belive. Hin speaking Is easy for me to understand even tho i cant speak or understand. Sounds weird
This is a somewhat helpful, if not peculiar video. I'm not sure if hearing the switches to/from my TL is very helpful if the claim is to immerse oneself. All the while hearing something which is all Greek to me ;) Bueno, fue un buen video, un cambio muy bonito.
I try to learn Catala. For me the metod of associating words to a pic doesn´t work becouse of verbs. They have many verb forms depending on who is the subject. It takes me a long time to get the right verb´s form depending on who I'm talking about
Spanish and Italian (as well as French, Catalan, Portuguese, Romanian, Occitan, Galician and many others) are all Romance languages that derived originally from Latin. This means that they share a lot of core vocabulary and fundamental grammar constructs. However, speaking one language does not mean you can take it for granted that you will understand another, although often it is easier for speakers of Romance languages to understand other Romance languages when they are written down.
Spanisch ist eine meiner Muttersprachen und trotzdem estaba muy confundido cuando empezaste a hablar en Griechisch 😂 Mein Gehirn estaba super verwirrt 😂😂😂
So much flexing!!! But you're still great!!! It's shocking how you speak Greek. There are diaspora Greeks who can only say Kalimera Kalispera!!! Hahaha!!!

Respect!
as a matter of fact, fonetically, Greek is just Spanish using very strange words ... I know my Onions !!
Greek is his mother tongue ))), look at his bio
Προσπαθώ να μάθω Ουγγρικά και είδα το βίντεο με τα βιβλία που προτείνεις. Μετά είδα αυτό το βίντεο και είναι πραγματικά απίστευτο πόσο φυσικά μιλάς Ελληνικά! Αν δεν είχα δει άλλα βίντεο, θα νόμιζα ότι είσαι όντως Έλληνας! Συγχαρητήρια!
Excelente video!!
I love how passionate you are about minority languages from every continent
Cheers for all the tips and secrets on how to learn new languages and I think you are doing a fantastic job with Spanish and Greek
Hat off mate

Great to see you make videos again Alex!
Good to see you again, Alex! 🤗👋

Great video Alex. I usually face the same issue when shifting languages, and your explanation was spot on! More videos like this please 👏 Thanks!
Thank you so much! I will!
Loved the format!
Hola!
Great video I love how you have a Catalan accent when speaking Spanish
Seguro que aprende español en Barcelona, lol
Από που είναι η καταγωγή σας;
43 years and I still haven't got the hang of this in English! :P

Gràcies Alex pel nou vídeo. Interesting suggestions!
Gràcies a tu!
Very useful tips! I will try to use them. Please make more videos like this.
Will put this on the list of topics for future videos! Thanks for the idea :)
Haven't tried it but it sounds like a smart method!
My mother tongue is English but I picked up Bangla and Hindi from my parents and school. I don't translate much when speaking but sometimes English always comes in even though I have the same experience speaking the language. 20 years
I'm currently trying to learn German but worried about not knowing about the dative,Trennbar verbens imperative verbs. I wish it was as easy as me picking up the other ones lol.
OMG, I just stopped translating words in my head immediately after watched this video, oh Satan, this is a polyglot miracle.
alex: ''your mother tongue, basically i see it as your base. its your safe space where youre going to be able to always express everything you want to express.''
me:*been learning english for 12 years, spoken it many hours everyday for the last 3 years and are currently learning 3 other languages from english and not my native tongue. and are also changing to english mid sentence so i can be understood* well shait, do they have norwegian courses for norwegians here?
Sameee I’m more fluent in my second language than my native
Impressive skill! :)
Can you make a videos on how to learn spanish please!?
Hello , I was interested in knowing how you learned hebrew. Thanks for this video! Great polyglot!
Maybe I'll make a video about this! Thanks for the comment
Amé este video 😍💜
Te amo Alex 😘😘💜💜💜💜

Creo ver un deje de felicidad sureña que no había en otros vídeos and it suits you well.
Please make the next video about immersion
Πως γινεται να εχεις τοσο καλη προφορα στα Ελληνικα; Ειλικρινα σοκ
When you transitioned from Spanish to Greek, my Hispanic brain broke and I thought that I was having a stroke, then I immediately figured it out after you said “avtos”.
I’m a native English speaker trying to learn Greek and improve my Spanish.
Dont really know what is this thing of "translating in the head" a lot of people seems to struggle, i feel lucky, btw your spanish is really good
I learned english almost as a native language? Well I consider it one for me because I learned it from a young age and reached fluency probably at around 16
Other than interacting a lot in english spaces, I think that thinking in english helped me get to fluency
Now words just "exist", I don't have to translate anything
I remember when I first started thinking in english at around 14-15, every few sentences I couldn't remember a word. I went on google translate every time.
Now I barely need to do this.
Good video Alex. My father comes from greek something like Tekilia Evia i belive. Hin speaking Is easy for me to understand even tho i cant speak or understand. Sounds weird
Μπράβο για τα ελληνικά ! Very good !
This is a somewhat helpful, if not peculiar video. I'm not sure if hearing the switches to/from my TL is very helpful if the claim is to immerse oneself. All the while hearing something which is all Greek to me ;) Bueno, fue un buen video, un cambio muy bonito.
Muchísimas gracias por el video! De dónde eres?
Sawubona Alex, I want to know if one can learn two languages simultaneously like Zulu and French?
I try to learn Catala. For me the metod of associating words to a pic doesn´t work becouse of verbs. They have many verb forms depending on who is the subject. It takes me a long time to get the right verb´s form depending on who I'm talking about
You just accomplished what I was scared of! Now what?
Μπράβο είσαι καταπληκτικος!!!! 👋👋👋
Thank you
omg im greek american and im shocked at how natural your greek accent is!!! how long have you been learning greek for?
Came across a native Japanese speaker. Said he has listened to a women that speaks Japanese at a native level. So he said he knows it's possible.
hello alex rawlings
I noticed that you live and speak Catalan. Any bands or singer. You like? So we can share between music
Είμαι ευγνώμων Άλεξ για την γνώση που μεταδίδεις... Ευχαριστώ! Μια ερώτηση μόνο: Σε παντρεύει η μαμά σού; :P
Πραγματικά είσαι καταπληκτικός!!!!!!
Mr the spanish and italian similar or no
Spanish and Italian (as well as French, Catalan, Portuguese, Romanian, Occitan, Galician and many others) are all Romance languages that derived originally from Latin. This means that they share a lot of core vocabulary and fundamental grammar constructs. However, speaking one language does not mean you can take it for granted that you will understand another, although often it is easier for speakers of Romance languages to understand other Romance languages when they are written down.
I think you look very attractive with the facial hair
I really hope you are female
@@Mike.Cebert I really hope you become enlightened

I am trying to become a translator, and It is a little bit difficult to translate, and I am a native greek

The legend

Still alive?
as a matter of fact, fonetically, Greek is just Spanish using very strange, ununderstandable words ... I know my Onions !!

So much flexing!!! But you're still great!!! It's shocking how you speak Greek. There are diaspora Greeks who can only say Kalimera Kalispera!!! Hahaha!!!
