My ancient Metal Zone always has a place on my board, it's the 'Slaughter In The Vatican' tone in a box, everyone was always too much of a diptard to EQ the damn thing correctly.

Metal Zone needs either a Fuzz or Overdrive right before it. Or just run it in effects loop.

Funny how that can beat some of the tones from other videos you have. It's still valid in 2021. For me using a tube crunch channel, boosting it with a metal zone, it sounds really good that way, much like Cannibal Corpse used to do. Use what works 🤘

  • @nicholasdasilva5699

I like to use mine as a parametric midrange boost in front of an already-distorted amp channel on something with medium/high-ish gain, like the OD2 channel on a Valvestate VS100H, a Mesa Dual Caliber, or the blue channel on a 5150 III. The active EQ controls make it extremely tricky to dial in the highs without getting too much fizz, and the pedal has an almost uncontrollable amount of gain on tap, but that's part of the fun.
I start somewhere around gain at 8:00, bass between 9:00-10:00 to taste, mids around 3:00, mid frequency wherever it meshes best with the amp's sweet spot, highs between 11:00 and 1:00, and the volume dimed. Back off the amp gain a little bit and otherwise dial it in as you normally would, and enjoy the gnarly chug-chuggas.

I like the MetalZone sound a lot. It's not for everything but it has a place. I particularly dug when you turned the boost on. Damn those chugs are so saturated and huge.
Personally the EL84 emu sounded real nice there. There was some extra tube grit and coloration that I would probably use. Still need to grab that Joyo box of goodness.
THE MetalZone was one of the first dirt boxes I got probably 15 years ago and I still love it. Run one into a Marshall DSL combo with moderate EQ settings and a boost, you will love it!!!
And that 7 string is a monster here. Hot damn. :p

if you use the metalzone in the loop on the NS-2, you can turn the gain down even more, and put that boost in front of an amp's clean channel, and then run the NS-2 in the loop, clicking the NS-2 to trigger the MT-2 in and out of the signal path and just always leave it on.

I have a 3 piece Prog Metal band doing the 26 tunes I wrote usually I change my sound for every part of a tune ... intro, verse, chorus, mid 8, bridges, solos etc. I use 2 boards linked with a total of 72 pedals. My approach is simply ...why not treat my live presentation with the detail and variation one would present with a Post produced recording. I come from a straight Prog Rock background but have adoptive and blended all modern Metal approaches as well. There is no reason modern styles can not be applied to the approach Yes, King Crimson etc. used. Without a keyboard player things like a Doom pedal thing for a bridge followed by using a high gain shred pedal for a double time part where I am playing triplets at 220 bpm make sense. The Metal Zone and even the Metal Core can be very effective. It is all about using them where they fit. They are musical colors. A pedal used to shred may be hopeless to play a flat picked part of a tune and the reverse is true. One needs a selection of dirt pedals, low gain, medium gain, high gain and extra (Metal) high gain. You should add a few fuzz pedals as well. Why get boxed in ..to one tone, one Metal genre ..take the best of all and do what every great band did. Create your own.
