Noticed thats true with quite a few Boss pedals, another notable example is the Boss 7-band EQ pedal. It too can have everything else effectively turned off and just have the Level (volume) turned up for a clean boost.

The set up is worth noting though (as opposed to just copying what is here) because it allows you to adjust for your particular rig. Now turn the mid control all the way up(stay with me here) - now slowly sweep the mid-frequency control all around and find that awful, nasally annoying frequency... you'll know it when you hear it, and it will be different for your guitar than mine, so one setting does not fit all. Now that you have found that nasty tone, turn the mid control down to scoop it out. You are NOT scooping ALL the mids, just a certain frequency range that is unpleasant to the ears. I'm convinced that you could hand Rabea a Hello Kitty guitar and a First Act Walmart amp and he'd make it sound like a million dollar rig. The guy is amazing!
I've been meaning to comment on this video since the day it was posted. I hope a lot of Guitar Center Heroes watch this video and learn something about setting a superior, more sophisticated sound instead of wanking away with the scoop of the month. Great comment Curtis. I totally agree! Being a blues-rock player, rarely would I think metal players would have much concern about tone. Obviously, there are a few who "get it." After seeing this, I am now an even bigger fan of Rabea, a very talented, gifted and seemingly all-around great guy! And, it goes without saying that Dan and Mick are of that same merit... Happy Trails !!
To be fair, though, the modern metal community seems to be very focussed on tone, getting it not only to sound heavy but also to be clear and the notes of chords to be distinguishable. Though, to be fair also, I mostly hear from people who play heavily down-tuned genres. If you don't dial those tones in correctly you're gonna have a bad time. :D
I hope they don't watch this though, the eq settings are set horribly. Full of that bassy mush that makes all the riffs sloppy. I listened to this with studio headphones that usually lack a lot of bass but this video was just full on filled with bass. The telly sounded way better because the eqs were set silly. But I sense a bit of elitism with "superior" tones and "wankers" so I'll leave it :)
There he is again, love the show, and Rabea, I've said it before and I'll say it again, I love your take on a genre I've never gotten into, glad to see you getting more and more recognition, turning me onto a genre!
I keep coming back to this video and watching it over and over again. Some great playing from Bea and very informative as always. But what I love the most is the Daniel can't keep his shit together during Bea's playing. Pretty sure that's the same reaction we've all had at some point whilst watching Bea play
OK, this is really awesome... I didn't realize how much I would love seeing someone who plays a style I don't play talk about what they look for (especially when you played with the EQ & talking about pickups). Maybe you guys could bring in a Jazz player, a Blues player, synth guy, etc etc
What´s so magical about that tele? In every video it sounds splendid. Dan, your tone is one of the best tones I´ve ever heard, doesn´t matter what you´re running through... I NEED that tone. =)
I really appreciate this particular video. There's no restrictive ego in these two guys and a willingness to learn from one another. That resulted in a really informative video which anyone could get something out of. Ive been playing metal for 22 years and still learned a lot just from this video alone. Cheers
thought: when I was young, I cranked way more bass into my tone in my bedroom, simply to reproduce the sound I heard on albums. I failed to realize that I was attempting to replace bass guitar tones with my rhythm guitar work. later when I played live and/or with a band, those same tones don't translate at all, and midrange eq became essential, as stated in this video.
Cracking video guys. Bea is, as always, an absolute beast of a player and a joy to watch. I'm not even a particular fan of the genre but he manages to make everything so musical you can't help but enjoy it.
And the amazing thing is that he absolutely kills it live. Seen him twice with Dorje - massive tone and never misses a note. Legend. Nice one guys and thanks!
Finally been experimenting with the Boneshaker, and Mick and everyone, this pedal is fantastic with all the gain down, eq’s at noon and the level about 1 o’clock with a neck single coil, great big cleans to subtle blues crunch. I was not expecting that, and think ill use this for all “clean blues”, I.AM.AMAZED! Great show idea, using pedals not how they were intended but still useful! Cheers!
I think the Boneshaker is aimed more at the doom/sludge metal realm. It got kind of a fuzzy quality to it, though if you dial the gain back you can get some tighter sounds out of it. Great pedal for sure, the parametric eq is awesome.
hashdealer88 definitely aimed more at that doom crowd, using it as a boost in so many ways I find works for me, plus DOD was having an amazing deal, I could not resist.
Great job guys! What a treat! Oh and hey Dan... You don't suck at metal....any more that anyone sucks at playing any "style". It's a guitar and you are a great guitarist. All it takes is a few adjustments. I struggle with jazz and blues...until I spend that little bit of precious time working on it. 100% sure you can shred! :)
Tow of my favorite internet personalities in one video is too much fun. I love the way Rabea sounds. Beautiful harmonizing mids sandwiched between angry lows and screeching highs. Nice job guys!!!
So impressed with those Metal Pro pedals! I used to have an old 5150 that I played through a Vader 2x12 and I can't believe how close those pedals get!
I’m not a metal guy, but this episode was interesting and educational. Rabea is a great musician, knows a lot about tone, and seems to be a really nice guy. The TPS did it again! Thanks, guys!
I have SO been looking forward to this episode ! Excellent show as always and I learned a lot. Great listening to Bea as he`s not only a cracking guitarist but is also a very articulate guy and explains why, what and how so well.
+That Pedal Show true enough but you can't deny that tele has something special going on inside it. it's not a single or double stack pickup, there's something special there. we might build the instruments but it's up to them what they want to play. bring rebea back and let him rip on that start for a few.
I have the TightMetal Pro, and then pre-ordered (wait listed, really) the FatMetal Pro after using it. I love them both, and right now I have my board setup to output from both into separate instrument inputs so I can work with each independently in the DAW. I have a third output that runs to my Polytune 2, and let that record into a third instrument input once I get the tuning setup. I have a ProTone Pedals Scaccinator and an MXR Super Badass, and I have different things for all of them. I use the AmpTweaker pedals most often, and with just about whatever I can run through them, but the big thing is all the adjustments not only on the top of the pedal, but when you open the battery compartment on each and can further adjust the limit ranges of the outer controls. Oh, and the 9v/18v option. I put in two 9v batteries one night, and the next day when I was trying to practice and record stuff, I thought I screwed up something with the pedal settings on the TMP. Turned out the 18v had a significant amount of juice to kick out, and it sounded like it increased the thickness by a large amount. It was to the point I couldn't make out anything I was recording. LOL I then remembered the additional battery, so I disabled second battery and just went back to board power with 9v, and it was fine. Those things have TONS of combinations, so checking out the AmpTweaker videos will help anybody new to them, particularly the Pro versions of each.
Not being into much modern metal at all, this was probably one of the most informative episodes and maybe my favorite thus far. Rabea is clearly a knowledgeable person in addition to being a great player and until watching this, I've heard people talk about distinctions in metal tone but I've never really heard them. His explanation and playing really really highlighted some very important aspects that honestly, apply to many styles across the board - it's all about getting a sound that works for what you're doing. Thanks so much for opening my ears and my mind with this one!!!
Just got the Boneshaker. For the first few minutes I thought I had a broken one - not much gain... then after a bit of tweaking I realised that the level control of the EQ section is like having three separate boost pedals before the distortion. When you dial in the EQ boost on the low end it really starts to thicken up and go into full-on saturated grunge/sludge metal territory. Its a keeper!
I think what rabea said about eq and tone especially when he said growing into a more professional guitar player holds true to more than metal for sure..he is a true pro..really enjoyed this one guys!
I only discovered Rabea today. Playing is excellent and his persona is one of a genuine and nice man.His smile is infectious. I felt happy watching these two men who were enjoying their work. The recording is first rate. I could hear the differences. The contrast of single and dual-coil pickups was very informative. Excellent work. Thank you for the Video. I own and play a 50 watt 2nd year 5150; Which I love; among 80+ other tube amps.
Thanks Larry! Please check Rabea out some more, especially his band Toska. He’s a very dear friend of ours and a true artist. We love him and want to see him where he belongs! Thanks for watching!
Oh my goodness. SUCH a joy watching Bea experiment and discover new sounds, and I love how he looks at Mick's Tele with a little bit of envy and desire!!
I know you're not much of a "metal guy" Dan but I tip my hat to ya sir for giving it a go. Nothing to be embarrassed by at all and a GREAT episode as usual.

Ok, this guitar is made for metal, nothing more and nothing less. And Rabbea is an awesome guitarist, that's for sure. Love the videos he does with Anderton's, too. Thumbs up!
This is probably one of your best episodes! I really hope to see Rabea again in a few more episodes. Also its amazing how both a metal and a non metal player are both learning things from each other.
Love this show! Learn so much every week! Could you do a video about guitarsond in synht-heavy pop music? I feel like the definition of good guitar tone = good blues or rock tone. I love that, but my experience is that that same tone dont work at all if keyboards are the maine part of the soundscape. You talk about it in videos like this, with the mids and amount of gain and stuff, and that is very interesting. I think a video about for exaple Coldplay and the guys from Katy Perrys band would be really informative! You should check out some live clips from the norwegian pop queen Gabrielle, she has a great guitarplayer in her band :)
Watching this in 2021 and DAYUUUM Rabea has come a long way with his body. Really inspiring for me, to climb the much smaller but still restricting hill I have to climb. If he can do that I can do it too.
Dime had an EQ pedal boosting mids. So to achieve an OK-ish tone on the metalzone, I don't scoop the mids on it. And Cut the mids a bit on the amp instead. Just a bit, not too much
I believe Dime's pickups also interacted in a way that boosted his mids without any amp involvement, though that is secondhand knowledge so take it as you will.
Fine demo. I'm beginning to understand the aesthetics of metal thanks to Mr. Massaad's articulation of his concepts and critical process to go along with that wicked technique. Thanks. I subscribed and look forward to more extended discussion of deep pedalology.
It seems like you guys just forgot about the boneshaker pedal once you moved to the next. It sounded amazing and is like half the price of the other pedals. But great video.
Some good tones in there, but nothing in the same galaxy as the dual Kraken clip. That stereo Kraken rig is just the most beautiful driven sound I've ever heard.
I actually think that analog metal zone sounded pretty good. Don't know how it would be at high volume, but it wasn't bad. Can't believe I'm saying this!
I have a MIJ 1972 Reissue Strat made around 1996 I believe, that I use to play metal, and its stock from the factory. It has some unknown mystery Dimarzio single coil in the bridge, apparently at this time Fender had just been bought back from CBS and only had the Japan factories, and were sometimes sticking Dimarzios and other pickups that they had lying around into the guitars.
I heard one of you guys say at the beginning of the video that people said you couldn’t play metal, I could not disagree with that anymore than I do. Rabea can straight up rip! That guy is a very talented guitarist 🤘🏽🤙🏽
Daniel, another great show! Hope Mick is on the mend from last week. I'm not a metal guy myself but I was glued to the screen! Regardless of the weekly topic your show ALWAYS contains so much knowledge. I find myself trying new things with my amp and pedals every week from your conversations here. That Pedal Show has been my regular Friday ritual since the second episode... keep up the GREAT work!! Also, Rabea was a perfect guest. A great player with loads of personality! AWESOME!!
I need to say that when Dan plugged his Telecaster into those same pedals, what came to my mind was a song which Tommy Shaw wrote circa 1996 for Styx’ Return to Paradise reunion, “On My Way”. The sound which The Band got for that particular truck reminded me of classic Led Zeppelin or what Metallica would sound like if they switched from being a metal band to playing power pop. Back in September 2018, I bought a Boss ME-80. With it, I have pursued an experiment which I should have done 17 years earlier, testing out the Metal Zone emulator to see whether it could approximate the Boston guitar sound. The end result pleasantly surprised me, when I discovered it was also good for playing Brian May parts. The trick was to run it through a clean channel, then scale back the gain to 3 or 4 and push all four of the EQ parameters just past noon.
I had a great time hanging with these guys! So much fun! Thanks for having me down :-)
It's a joy to watch you play every time. Not only are you are great guitarist, you come across as a true gent.
+Rabea Massaad Can you come every week mate?! Thanks so much for making TPS so awesome this week!
Definitely keep us posted on your new signature guitar, looks and sounds fantastic!

I know you're not much of a "metal guy" Dan but I tip my hat to ya sir for giving it a go. Nothing to be embarrassed by at all and a GREAT episode as usual.
holy shit balls @rabeaMassaad slimmed down alot!! Good for him :)!
Rabea attack is crazy, never seen anyone hit the string that hard and precise
Jimmi Ricardo Walt till you discover John Browne. That guys pick attack can injure bystanders
My review on each.

Next episode: "Which gain pedal has the most pleasing hiss?"

Ok, this guitar is made for metal, nothing more and nothing less. And Rabbea is an awesome guitarist, that's for sure. Love the videos he does with Anderton's, too. Thumbs up!
Tele + FatMetal = pure bliss
This is probably one of your best episodes! I really hope to see Rabea again in a few more episodes. Also its amazing how both a metal and a non metal player are both learning things from each other.
+Mark Mathew We're all guitar players at the end of the day Mark!
This video, though only a few months old, just made me order myself a Amptweaker Tight Metal Pro.Thanks! :D
Rabea = one fine djentleman.
I'm not into djent or even metal, really, but I love watching and listening to Rabea. He's just the real deal and such a great player.
So glad I'm not deaf and have to read the closed captions:
"Welcome to the pony show"
"I'm delighted to have a beer on the show"
just came across this flashback. So awesome to see Rabea hanging out with the Pedal Guys. Awesome.
Wonder who that rabea dude is
A beast at the guitar.
+Chris P. Bacon you did not realise he has a picture of himself with Rabea? xD
A god amongst men
i see you everywhere on youtube haha, nice to see you dude
The guy in your picture.
Watching this in 2021 and DAYUUUM Rabea has come a long way with his body. Really inspiring for me, to climb the much smaller but still restricting hill I have to climb. If he can do that I can do it too.
I’m going the other way. Its way easier to eat
@@Ottophil true. And much more fun.
Tracy Street Agreed! It was my favourite by far.
I grew out of metal too many decades ago but this episode was so entertaining. Great guys. Great chemistry. Great show. Cheers
+Influxx Media Thank you! Bea is a brilliant musician regardless of genre, that's what makes him so watchable. Cheers!
Holy shit rabea has lost so much weight
He's half this size now. Good for him!
power of heavy metal
Damn, he was a big boy.
@@JohnnyReading I can't believe it's the same person. Fair play
I'm not a metal player but it's great to find out how Rabea crafts his tone. Great video, great guest.
Some good tones in there, but nothing in the same galaxy as the dual Kraken clip. That stereo Kraken rig is just the most beautiful driven sound I've ever heard.
dmwalker24 it sounded like shit in this clip.
Rabea is amazing, great talent and he seems like a fun guy to hang with. This is the best show.
Ra-Beast Massaad = must see!
Bea is great to watch. Always interesting playing and can play other types of music as well.
Walt Coyle he really is. He's that type of guy who comes out at the end of every show to chat to the fans, such a nice and easy guy to talk to.
Nice demo of different metal pedals, and Rabea gives some good pointers on setting up your tone to work within the context of a band.
I actually think that analog metal zone sounded pretty good. Don't know how it would be at high volume, but it wasn't bad. Can't believe I'm saying this!
I liked this episode far more than I thought I would. Excellent video. The play out section was awesome!
I think Rabea has a new found love for the Tele..
I suspect he has always had some love for the Tele, considering he put a reversed Tele headstock on his signature guitar...
Scott Sakurai his guitar is a tele just has different pick ups and stuff body any neck is the same
I have a MIJ 1972 Reissue Strat made around 1996 I believe, that I use to play metal, and its stock from the factory. It has some unknown mystery Dimarzio single coil in the bridge, apparently at this time Fender had just been bought back from CBS and only had the Japan factories, and were sometimes sticking Dimarzios and other pickups that they had lying around into the guitars.
mastodon blood and thunder in that pedal show ??????????? is this real life ? hahahahahha
I heard one of you guys say at the beginning of the video that people said you couldn’t play metal, I could not disagree with that anymore than I do. Rabea can straight up rip! That guy is a very talented guitarist 🤘🏽🤙🏽
Rule Number 1. NEVER RUN THE DIST PAST NOON ON THE METAL ZONE.
+Albee213 sounds like good advice
Also: don't feed it past midnight!
So cool coming back to this and hearing the riff from Congress at the end!
Mick who? I haven't forgotten you. Completely in awe of Bea's right hand, funk and chunk.
+Jack Beale Guitar us too! Seriously such a great player
Indeed! I'm trying to learn this quick Funk picking Bea always does. Any videos from him on that?
Great idea to have Rabea Massaad on the show. I loved his playing at the very end. Fantastic episode.
man, Rabea is up there. his improv chord stuff is just insane to me
+Zac Miller Us too - he is the real deal, no question, thanks for watching!
i can't get over that last little bit he did. it's like if adam jones had better fingers.
rabea is a beast, thx for invite him for the show
i would love to hear more of that boneshaker with rabea
Holy shit I've only seen rabea videos from more recent years, I had no idea he lost that much weight.
He glad he looks a lot more healthy
Daniel, another great show! Hope Mick is on the mend from last week. I'm not a metal guy myself but I was glued to the screen! Regardless of the weekly topic your show ALWAYS contains so much knowledge. I find myself trying new things with my amp and pedals every week from your conversations here. That Pedal Show has been my regular Friday ritual since the second episode... keep up the GREAT work!! Also, Rabea was a perfect guest. A great player with loads of personality! AWESOME!!
I fucking love you guys, this video rules :)
+mofongotron we f#### love you too! :)
Yayyyyyyyy! This made my day. It would be so awesome to geek out on gear with you guys!
+mofongotron for real
Yep! I'm not much of a metal guy but I love Rabea's playing.
This is my favorite show on TH-cam. Just makes my Friday/Pay Day even more sweet!
REALLY INTERESTING DICHOTOMY, Between "roots" and "metal" player gain, and EQ structures, another show would really be appreciated.....
I love That Pedal Show, and i do even more now that you have branched out and jamming with legends like Rabea. Good one boys
No doubt!
I'm getting that fat metal pro. And a fuckn' telecaster!
Tobias TK paradoxically, single coils sound awesome with lots of gain.
