Matt Heckler, "Blue Eyes Dancing," ft. Benjamin Tod // GemsOnVHS™

- In a very special edition here, we find Matt Heckler (formerly of Deep Chatham) teaming up with Benjamin Tod (of Lost Dog street band) to play a tune of Matt's on the porch. Not just any porch, however. This is the house where Guy Clark used to live, and later Townes Van Zandt. Some parts of Heartworn Highways were filmed here. Benjamin is friends with Townes daughter, and filming on that porch just felt dang right.
Matt himself is one of those artists who can hold an entire room with a solo performance. His voice reaches and booms, and his fiddle playing accompanies that voice perfectly fine. The way he holds his fiddle is also of interest - what some may call the "incorrect" or unorthodox way. Doing things really well the wrong way is something we encourage here, for sure, and old time has a long tradition of it. Here's an excerpt from a great article on chest level playing -
"There are two striking habits that appear among a considerable number of old-time fiddlers: their tendency to hold the fiddle against their chest rather than the classical way, and their tendency to hold the bow in all sort of weird ways, often gripping it away from the frog. For a classically trained violinist the image of someone playing this way is alien. However, these habits among old-time fiddlers should not be seen as restricting or simply wrong. I believe they are deeply meaningful and rooted in legitimate stylistic and musical aspirations."

When a musician sounds even better live and raw than they do in a studio, you realize the pure genius of their talent.
Matt and Ben are exactly that.
Nick shoulders is the same way
@Chauncey Bilton no one cares except maybe your gf

Word.
Hes awesome I had the privilege to meet and hangout with him in Charlotte saw lost dog and a couple other bands play then after the show all the bands got together and went to a shed and they all played together all night me and 2 of my friends were the only ones there listening to them all was probably 12 to 15 people in there playing all together it was a really amazing night
@@charliejenkins7314 lucky man you are, Charlie Jenkins.
Have you looked into his back story? He’s been saved by music and people he’s had the good fortune of stumbling upon. It’s pretty inspiring what he’s been through to still end up where he is now.
Every time I hear the Lost Dog SB.. I go back to my days in Martin County and Inez when I had to cross the river between Beauty and Lovely on that one lane bridge to go to work at the mine in Mingo up Marrow Bone. It was around 75.. 76.. I was always stoned.. and there was a tavern where this old girl made cherry pies. I'd just buy me a whole pie and listen to them hill jacks play while I ate. It was a scream and the corn liquor was the best you ever had. They say when you die.. you go back to the times when you were the happiest. If that's true.. I'll be back up that holler again. Thank yee fellers.
Absolutely. I’m from Inez as well and i couldn’t have said it better myself
Yeah I hear ya keep on keeping on
I think you might have a song in that paragraph Snuffy or at least part of one.

Thats what I'm a thinkin !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Especially this part.............
"They say when you die.. you go back to the times when you were the happiest. If that's true.. I'll be back up that holler again"
Perfect.
My brother passed five months ago, he introduced me to this song... I'm so happy to have it as a sort of theme song for our last few months together. It's beautiful
💜
That's beautiful brotha
We go hard in the hills
He's forever at your back.. but don't forget life is at your front
You know it’s good when you’ve only got a fiddle and a guitar and it sounds like a full band
need the violin back in here
Don't forget to give props to the sound engineers!
Ain’t that the truth
Fiddle paired with banjo or guitar creates a sound bigger than the sum of their parts.
@@zachb8012Fiddle and banjo are the two loudest of the traditional bluegrass instruments.
The fiddle player has really let herself go... Come on, I'm just kidding! Great tune and great talent from Gems, as usual!
cocaines a helluva drug
Mattshley Maeckler
I'd smash.
LMAO
I laughed really hard at this, thanks pal. :)
I just keep coming back to this
I've lived in a city for a long time now. This song makes me want to move back home, to the mountains. Music takes you where words cannot. Thanks for the amazing music.
Where ya from originally
Amen brother, mountains is our only friends, the older I get the more accurate it gets
Man I know. I want to go back to the farm I grew up on in Alabama. Money social status luxury it's over rated boys. Bout had my feel of it. However my children lol and wife. Nah it's the

I hope we can see some more of him in the future! Matt playing with Benjamin sounds so natural.
more of them both is coming down the line
Hell Yea!
I really hope so
I've literally listened to this 100 times today alone. And the day ain't over.
Camron Fox so about 346 times you could listen to this in a day 😀
That’s my boy!
Adore this...one of my daily listens. 💗 As a punk rocker it took me years to embrace my Appalachian roots but now I love this kind of music now
Same bro, started off with Black Flag and Minor Threat to Matt Heckler and other bluegrass artists
I'll chime in as the third. I love bands like social d, alkaline trio, and no use for a name but find these boys got it too
This was the song my wife son and I walked out of our wedding to!
Benjamin Todd is so humble “I fell in love with his music, I guess he liked mine”
The two of them are the most down to earth guys I have ever had the privilege of talking to
Man ran across this song two weeks ago on TH-cam music and when im down and feeling blue I throw this on repeat and ill be dance and smiling by the third time
The guy on the fiddle is killing it. Love Benjamin Tod too
Her name is Ashley Mae. She doesn't look the same anymore though...
She goes by Matt now.

oh you buggers, you made me spit coffee all over my laptop now...!! lol..
It's dripping down the screen like the tears of laughter running down my cheeks...
Matt Heckler is so good man..
For 20 years I've listened to strictly electronic based music. Then, divorce, stolen dogs etc. September Doves was my first intro to back REAL music, with real and honest lyrics. He prolly won't read this, But f it, Thank You Benjamin. Your pen saved me.
No matter how rubbish my day has been I can sit down with a whiskey, listen to gem and it all just melts away. Music is like magic!!! Love it!!
September doves is a hell of a song

Lyrics:
Don't leave me hanging
From the willow tree
Honey cut me down
Cause I can't breath
Climb up the mountain
I ain't coming down
No you won't see me
Around your town
I'm high and lonesome
and I'm running dry
Not giving up
On getting by
So come on honey
Won't you make me beg
Take out your fiddle
Tune up and play
Cause I know it's hard
When the sun goes down
To be alone
On shaking grounds
We'll get some matches
And kerosene
We'll burn it down honey
Burn out and leave
I'll bleed out slowly
In my Sunday vest
When you come around
In that Sunday Dress
Your blue eyes dancing
Drawing me in
With sideways glances
Honey where you been
I know it's hard
When the sun goes down
To be alone
On shaking grounds
We'll get some matches
And kerosene
We'll burn it down honey
Burn out and leave
I know it's hard
When the sun goes down
To be alone
On shaking grounds
We'll get some matches
And kerosene
We'll burn it down honey
Burn out and leave
Thanks for the chords
I think its "I've given up on getting by"
Thank you
The B is a minor cord. Ben plays with a capo on second fret in C. So from there the cords are C, Am, C, then G. the order and changes change a bit in the chorus. I've been obsessed with this song for over a month now, so I had to sit by the fire and figure it out one night. Good luck trying to make it sound as good as these guys. Ben is a Hell of a rhythm picker. And Matt is matt! Have fun trying tho
Ya I just try to do a 'cover' with my own rhythm cause he's too good! thanks for the chords
I watch this anytime I need to feel better about anything
I drove up my local mountain with a beloved friend and a couple beers I remember playing this song breathing in the fresh air walking thru a small meadow and the forest. Perfect song to a perfect moment live life and love each other people

Saw Matt open for Lost Dog in Louisville KY and was blown away. Saw this video and was blown away. This man is music.
The world needs more music like this, stuff you can actually feel in your bones. Much respect!
Trust me when I say I’ve searched TH-cam upside down, and I can’t find another piece of music even remotely close to this masterpiece.
I've loved music like this all my life, and I'm over 50.I still remember when I purchased my first Doc Watson record and attended my first bluegrass feastival. The last few years this music has really caught on with a lot of people. It's refreshing when what's on the radio and the pop charts, and even worse what's on country radio stations, is really awful.

I can't stop playing this. Its practically been on repeat. Both Ben and Matt are so easy to listen to. 👌 Give us more guys!

Still pissed me off when he said he didn’t like Ben at first
Going on four years now, we’ve been blessed with this helluva duo of folk musicians! Cheers y’all to being blessed with the ability to be surrounded by such awesome music!

Can't possibly thank you enough for introducing me to both of these artists, without whom I very well may have given up in 2020 and not lived to have seen this day.
Everything goes away when I listen to this, puts me in a place I can't describe... Totally magical, I've heard it 100rd times. Never changes the feelings of hearing it.

hot off the press! great song! love the description! Rest in Peace Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt!
Wow there are some really good vibes.
I still listen once a week. Great tune from great musicans🤘🤘🤘🤘😎
Maybe it's because these guys have a punk/metal background which is where most of my roots are in terms of what influenced me musically in my younger years, and so they truly know and appreciate the power that can come from simplicity, but either way, this song feels so powerful despite it literally being a 6-1-5-1 progression THE ENTIRE WAY THROUGH. so simple yet it rocks me even after the 100th time listening. well done Matt
I don’t think it was simple! Nothing simple about it!!
Know wat you mean ithought same first hearing this..its bootn it
Matt Heckler's got a great voice! Amazing. Not that Benjamin Tod isn't also fantastic. In fact, it is weird to hear him be backing vocals seeing as how he's so great a singer.
I'm into metal but stangely, really digging this folk music.
Folk and blues is the original metal ! Gotta love it haha
This is my all time favorite recording gems has ever brought us. Thank you so much for this Anthony Ben and Matt!
Saw Matt open for The Lost Dog Street Band in Madison back in May and was absolutely blown away by his voice and talent. When he stepped on stage I didnt know what to expect but once he started singing I was blown away. Seeing him get any kind of platform warms my heart. When I saw him I fell in love with his music and between sets I bought every bit of merchandise he was selling for himself because I wanted to support him (also his music isnt available online and i needed that now!). I also got a chance to speak to him briefly and he is just a genuinely cool dude.
he sure is a cool dude. im sure he will get his music online here soon.

billy bong thanks so much, was waiting for somebody to find the words. I’ll get it up on UltimateGuitar with chords now
I was sitting here listening trying to figure out the cords by ear. First I thought it was in G straight to Am. But if you listen to the changes it sounds like rhythm in the cord of C. C then Em I believe then bounces between G and C with the occasional F toward the end of the verse. Not had a chance to try and play it yet but I feel like that should be pretty close. Could also be an Am instead of Em. Ben playing this definitely gives it incredible drive. Ben is a Hell of a rhythm player. As well as Matt sawing the shit outta that fiddle!

I think is Sunday best, not vest
I drove 4 hours 1 way to see Lost Dog's first performance in Lincoln Nebraska. Matt was one of their openers and he was one of the most humble and fun guys to see perform. Talking to him after the set you could just feel how much he loves his music. Can't wait to hear more from him!
Can't believe how good this is! If I would have discovered this kinda music sooner I probably wouldn't have gone through such a large portion of my life telling people I hate country music
This collaboration is just absolutely amazing.. we need more!
So much soul and just overall genuine human emotion in this! Makes you feel alive!
I finally got to see both you guys in Nashville. I even got to smoke a cigarette with Matt after he played. Please y'all gotta keep this up. This is a revival of what music should be.
Real damn music... vibrates the bones of my very soul. I play clawhammer banjo and jam along to this song every day. Thank you Ben, Matt and GemsOnVHS! You all are bringing more good to this world than you could Imagine, keep following your spirits, and keep playing your hearts out for the world to hear!
What are the chords they sound like bm (I might be confusing it with dm right now I had a few drinks) d and a?
After realizing I wrote d definitely bm lol
Loved Deep Chatham! I discovered them busking in Monument Square in Portland, ME like 16 years ago and bought their CD. I still listen to it.
I found out about Benjamin Todd because my brothers buddy was at a alcohol store and ran into him in there and ever since I’ve been listening to this guy.
Saw Matt open for Lost Dog Saturday 9/8 @ the Bottleneck in Lawrence, Ks. He killed every song he played, even the on the banjo. Never got a chance to meet him throughout the night. But what made my night was running into Ben and Ashley around town before the show started and getting the opportunity to meet two talented individuals face to face and they were so kind for taking the time to stop their tour of the town to bullshit with some fans. Hopefully we didn’t scare ya away from Lawrence forever. From the bottom of my heart thank you guys for not letting folk die. Sincerely, the guys you met on the down the street from the venue(glasses guy and brother with face tats). Oh and I can’t forget running into the great banjo player Patrick Watt!!!
Heck I love this song can’t stop listening to it
FUCK. YES!!! Matt Heckler is one of the futures of music and with the amazing Benjamin Tod, thank you for finally putting some of your music online. Loved seeing them in Minneapolis and Madison this past year.
Man there's just something extra in Matt and Ben's playing that I don't think any amount of hard work or practice can achieve unless you're Matt and Ben. It's like there's a whole other set of lyrics to this song that are being sung through their instruments. The words tell you the general story, the instruments fill in the details. Gems on VHS couldn't be more appropriately named. These two truly are rare gems in this world
Still here. Thank you for saving my soul
I wish Matt would put his stuff online. I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
same. it's a work in progress - i'm talking to him about getting his new stuff out.
His new album just released today on Bandcamp

The more Heckler I listen to the more I like it. Great artists. Had the pleasure to see both live front row. Impressive sound a lyrics from both.
Hope this means more Benjamin Tod videos to come soon too? This is brilliant ❤️👌
till one of us die yeah!
GemsOnVHS fuck yes, I can die happy now (after one of you two preferably) 😂 seriously listen to your channel every. single. day, keep killing it.
Songs like this hit me in my soul for some reason. It calls back to family I never knew that stilled in the mountains and woods here in Tennessee, and grandparents that ran barefoot through small backwoods towns in old jeans and t-shirts.
Fcking love america. Thank god for this 🔥
this is how it is in canada too
The US is still the source of the best music in every genre. Britain had it going on for a while, but those days are over.
The fact they don't have a duo album is a shame great artist
