I actually recently used this to design a space suit for a TV show that will be coming out soon....so it IS useful in a professional environment. And yes, I know Vitale Bulgarov's kits are expensive, but it's totally worth it to me.
Hey Frank, next time try using Autodesk Meshmixer for the post-processing of your sculpts. It's free and has a tool called Make Solid, which practically wraps your model in shrink-wrap and makes it printable. You do need to tune it to your needs, and it can take some time to complete (maybe 15 minutes for more complex models, but I'd guess doing the postprocessing by hand takes longer than that), but it's really useful. Meshmixer really should be in your toolbox, if you're 3D printing. Angus from the channel Maker's Muse has some useful videos on it.
Not only is it cool to just design a whole lot of stuff, for YT shows, it coudl be a series, person X vs Y, design a space fighter, tank, etc etc, but also a time attack to do that, a max part limit, x mandatory parts, maybe with set sizes, and before anyone knocks this idea, most people that come to see Tested, love seeing people making stuff. And you're just adding some rules/game element to it.
kit bashing class at Academy of Art in SF was one of my favorite classes I ever took. I still have a few things I made back then I'm still amazed I pieced together. This new 3D stuff is pretty cool, especially to kit bash cause you can instantly see how things can combine without actually physically cutting, sanding and puttying parts together.
Ha! I just posted a video on my page a few days ago about sculpting in Oculus Medium and 3d printing the results. Nice to see others doing the same. It is incredibly satisfying.
Now all I need is enough money to afford an Oculus, these controls, this software and a decent 3d printer. As someone who builds and paints models and miniatures, the ship Frank produced looks pretty awesome; based on the shots we got, I'd say it seems to be at least on par with some of the "traditional" commercially available kits out there. I'd definitely enjoying getting a chance to paint it and put it on a display base.
If your having problems with your 3d print being hollow, instead of doing it in your oculus sculpting program, do it in another design software. I use meshmixer a lot. In their you can tell it to make a solid body, essentially just filling in where it would originally be hollow
Very "Ghost in the shell" seeing frank sitting there with the headset waving his arms about....the future is coming on fast. Amazing, kinda unnerving stuff.
This was super cool to watch! I'm sure someone had already suggested this, but in order to fill in your model, Meshmixer has a make solid tool that works really well for what I think you're trying to accomplish. I'm looking forward to the live sculpting sessions.
I'm really into the possibilities of the intuitive nature of this, Im sure once people who model in CGI get to use this we will be hooked, I am sure that we will soon be modelling 3ds Max, modo, etc in VR. I look forward to that, for me it will feel much more intuitive.
If you get this streamlined there are a lot of business opportunities there. It would be so cute to be able to have a kid design their own vehicle or spaceship and then watch it get printed in front of them.
is it easy to make your own parts? In that if you wanted to make your own set of guns that could easily be mounted to larger objects, thus having your own look and style for several different ships without using another's designs. I'm not familiar with the program's limitations.
best way to sort out and make models watertight. is a simple program with a lot of power. 3D Builder by microsoft for windows 10. it will load in the model and repair and make the model watertight. give it a go. i just got the rift and looking forward to buying the oculus medium. tbh it should come free with the vr headset. :)
Besides medium, which only works on the rift, what is the next best 3d modeling software for VR? Because I own a different type of headset and really want to get into this
Hi, Frank. Great work! I was inspired and bought a couple of Vitale's kits myself. Unfortunately, I'm having trouble turning them into stamps in Oculus Medium. Can you point me to resources that helped you figure this part out? Can it be done without expensive 3d software?
It's a catch-all term for taking two pre-existing sets of parts (that were not designed to be put together), and then slamming them together. Just look up Warhammer 40k kitbashing, and you'll probably see some cool models made this way. To be fair, though, this is an old term that has up until now only referred to physical parts, and not the ability to print the separate parts as one whole.
ravemastaj its also used to refer to combining individual parts from various 1/6th scale figures and making a whole new character or uniform/clothing out of them, its very versatile, its the perfect term to describe these sort of things I think. The Nostromo model ship from Alien also features kitbashing heavily in its intricate detailing and greeble parts and so do the original trilogy Star Wars ships/props.
Usually I am just a tourist , this video blew my mind , thank you for the knowledge shared. I hope you guys make a how to video about the pain in the ass that it was to do the transfer and adjustments. Thank you again.
I'd like to see the components being made from scratch instead of using pre-made components... how useful is this vr environment in actual modelling, where there are no stock parts available?
How so? From what I've seen of Zbrush it seems to be suited for sculpting organic forms and not so much what we see in this video which requires a pre-existing library of spare parts, but is it also possible to model stuff like those parts in this video with sharp edges, detailing and everything in Zbrush?
This is the only kind of modelling I could do, I need to use my hands to form and use shapes, not buttons and mice, I feel so confined when I have to use a mouse, keyboard and 2D screen.
Can anyone recommend some sort of sandable filler for 3D printed parts? I'm using spray primer and sanding between each pass, but it isn't filling in enough.
is it tho ? i mean it's reaaally flimsy, for architectural concepts and kit bashing it might be the real deal, but for sculpting, i really don't think it can beat the precision of a graphic tablet.
"precision of a graphics tablet" stylus's are inherently no more precise than the touch controllers and also there are 3d styluses if that's more comfortable to you just look up "3d stylus" the "flimsyness" comes from the fact the apps here are all designed for free hand input to emulate sculpting, there are vr 3d modeling apps that support CAD snap-to-grid ,rotate around single axis etc. all those things are artificial constraints used by software to make specific types of modeling faster that can be imposed inside VR arbitrarily, the problem right now is just that vr apps are all new and don't have full feature overlap with the established tools from Autodesk and zbrush, but it's just matter of time till they do plus you can do stuff in VR that's nigh impossible/too impractical otherwise
if anyone could share the process of import those specific Vitaly Bulgarov parts from his kit that would be great. I have those and I cant find a way to batch import them at the good resolution like Frank in the video has. many thx in advance. :)
This is too Fracking Awesome ! I'm going to look into this I've seen the Bulgarov stuff online it really is amazing ... I have original designs that I'd love to see 3D printed " You have taken your first step into a much larger world " - Obi Wan Kenobi 👽💚

Medium on it's own is worth the price of Oculus and touch, although incredibly addictive.
I freaking love that you are wearing a AvE shirt

Hey Frank/Tested: Is there a link where the rig specs and printer model you used are shared? Thanks for sharing the vid.
idk about that. its not for everyone.

Mind blown beyond all recognition!!!

You need to be able to add images to the virtual space for it to be really useful, but what Frank just made not even trying hard was amazing.
Vegaspsycho you can

Remember "print the mystery object"? That was fun. You guys could make something like that again, y'know? To be a weekly thing again.
That armor is so rad
I'd love to see more, this was awesome. Great work, Frank!
that is really cool. as the tech gets cheaper and more accessible it will snowball.
I'm really into the possibilities of the intuitive nature of this, Im sure once people who model in CGI get to use this we will be hooked, I am sure that we will soon be modelling 3ds Max, modo, etc in VR. I look forward to that, for me it will feel much more intuitive.
thats the best vr game I've seen so far...
Guess you haven't seen Google earth VR yet...........
Definitely a cool idea
Frank is just awesome!...
This would be awesome for architecture!!!
you just gave a complete diferent view for Quill thanks guys !! :) yes bring more
Dynamism helps close all the holes, making the model watertight.
LOOOOVE this, this is like what i always dreamed of the lego of future would be like
Can't wait until medium has zbrushs sculpting software integrity
love the ave tshirt! that man knows the quality content on yt
Pretty darn cool.
If you get this streamlined there are a lot of business opportunities there. It would be so cute to be able to have a kid design their own vehicle or spaceship and then watch it get printed in front of them.
I've wanted to wait a couple of years to get into VR and see how things shake out in terms of standards, but this is very tempting.
Love the shirt Frank! AvE is awesome!
now i see how many ave fans enjoy tested
So great, wish I had access to this... maybe some day
That is so cool. Please stream some of this!
Hankerin from Drunkens and Dragons does this stuff on saturdays. His dnd sculpts are incredible
I love the fact that you have a release the schmoo shirt
Super cool!
Great work, great video. Super interesting stuff.
I see all these VR sculpting videos and so few seem to know about Media molecule's WIP game "dreams" wich is much more refined and intuitive.. x)
bring into meshmixer...make solid with high accuracy then export as stl for your slicer.

I'm not familiar with the program's limitations.
Love the AVE Schmooo tee. Want one!!!
THIS.. is absolutely fucking incredible!!
I really want to see it painted and weathered.
the schmoo shirt

sooooo badassss!!!!!!
Instead of ZBrush, you should try bringing the object into 3DCoat. Convert it to voxels, then it might be easier to solidify.
That AVE "Tee shart" though.:D Great video guys.:D
So is medium supported by revive? I am a CAD artist and would love medium for my Vive.
To make it printable just Import the obj into Meshmixer, use the Make Solid tool and Export ;)

yes plz live!!!!
I'm not a modeler, but kit bashing sounds like having too many parts mods downloaded in ksp

Hi Frank,
What 3D printer are you printing these on? The quality of the prints looks really nice.
Any news on the process of refining the model for 3d print?
Also, which kind of 3d printer are you using?
yes live!
Love the tshirt!! Release the schmoo!! 😂
Could there be a way of designing multiple space ships based on the algorithm that simulates the principles of natural selection? Breeding spaceships!
love the AvE shirt!
Usually I am just a tourist , this video blew my mind , thank you for the knowledge shared.
I hope you guys make a how to video about the pain in the ass that it was to do the transfer and adjustments.
Thank you again.
I dig that AvE shirt
Release the schmoo!
Why am I not surprised that there's overlap between Tested and AvE?
i want to try this out so bad.
Hey guys! What happened with doing this as a regular feature? Would love to see more of this! :)
nice T-shart, bro
PLEASE DO THIS LIVE.
This is fucking sick. Just awesome!
I want to do this so badly
Hah, it looks like a sea turtle. Awesome.
What printer was used for the gun, the figure and the spaceship?
I'd like to see the components being made from scratch instead of using pre-made components... how useful is this vr environment in actual modelling, where there are no stock parts available?
Will the files for this model be released for us to download and print our self? Because I would love to print this model for myself!
look cook . i use oculus quest learning how to use now. any update about this workflow ?
This is what I called "Positive Technology"
I really wish this was for the Vive
I hope this isn't a dumb question, but is there a desktop version of something like this?
The closest would be a program like ZBrush.
Christopher Raff ah ok, thanks! Would you be able to apply these kit bash collections in ZBrush?
Yes, you can.
Nice! Thanks Christopher!

use a wacom
Link to the artist's site in description?
awesley92 thanks!
Can anyone recommend some sort of sandable filler for 3D printed parts? I'm using spray primer and sanding between each pass, but it isn't filling in enough.
Try Bondo 907 shoot and glazing putty. It dries really fast. Never tried it but it only costs 4 bucks
The down side is that your missing out on all those sweet fumes from normal kit bashing !
i download the kitbashing files and how do you upload the into oculus medium in custom folders?
That's a sweet ship! nice work... can I order one? :)
I feel like doing creatures in this would be a lot like Spore...
I wanna be Frank. this is the Norm for you guys.
This VR sculpting.. will be the next generation of digital sculpting? What do you think guys?
is it tho ? i mean it's reaaally flimsy, for architectural concepts and kit bashing it might be the real deal, but for sculpting, i really don't think it can beat the precision of a graphic tablet.

next generation ??? its now in use btw :) the future = only improvement :)
Try make something like Gunpla with this tech.
What 3D printer did use? Resin it looks like?
Yeah, has to be resin because there's no lines. Bastard doesn't want to give his secrets away.
if anyone could share the process of import those specific Vitaly Bulgarov parts from his kit that would be great. I have those and I cant find a way to batch import them at the good resolution like Frank in the video has. many thx in advance. :)
This is too Fracking Awesome !
I'm going to look into this
I've seen the Bulgarov stuff online it really is amazing ...
I have original designs that I'd love to see 3D printed
" You have taken your first step into a much larger world "
- Obi Wan Kenobi
👽💚
It looks like Adobe Medium is for the Rift but not the Quest 2.
This is exactly how I design in KSP... I don't get into orbit often.
RELEASE THE SCHMOO!!
Don't forget SPORE!
Can we have the link were to buy the kitbashes models
AVE!
Does it run on the Vive Pro?
I feel that vr sculpting would be the best, but that shits expensive
the sculptor looks like one of the guys from flight test
AVE tee for the WIN!!
love the AVE shirt frank.
