The 1976 Tampa Bay Buccaneers finished the season 0-14. They possessed the worst offense in the NFL, getting shut out 5 times... yet somehow, their offense the following year was worse.

Fun fact: I chose to cover the worst modern offense ever (SB era), but the 1942 Detroit Lions actually had a worse offense.
QB ratio of 1 TD to 33 INT’s.
3.5 points per game.
Their top 2 quarterbacks actually had negative yards per pass attempt due to throwing almost as many INT’s (23) as completions (33).
In a 42-0 loss, the Lions committed 12 turnovers on 50 offensive plays.

One thing to note about Tampa’s two wins that season. Both of the coaches of the teams they beat would get fired after the season
Their defeat of my Cards put the capper on one of the biggest choke jobs in NFL history. At one time in 1977 the Cards were fighting for first place in the NFC East at 7-3 heading into a Thanksgiving matchup against the Dolphins. Well, the Cards got stomped on national TV 55-14 and never recovered. They went on a 4 game losing streak culminating with the 17-7 loss to the hapless Bucs and didn't win another game until week 9 of the 1978 season(my first live football game I might add). Oh, fun fact, in week 16 of the 1978 season the Bucs were to play the Saints. They wanted to watch the game film of the Bucs win over the Saints the previous season but it no longer existed. Hank Stram had burned it.

Well...not quite. Coryell was essentially fired by the Cards after he criticized their owner, Bill Bidwill. He wasn't fired from the organization, but he was forced to resign as HC. He joined SD four games into the following season, and turned that team around.
Well, they beat Archie Manning's Saints, but the Saints at that time literally had one good player: Archie Manning.
And there was nothing to indicate Archie was even any good at the NFL level. He was a hyped college player, but a complete failure even when he had supreme talent like Wes Chandler and Chuck Muncie.

Their other win was against the Cardinals, who were so humiliated they had to move out of St. Louis.

1979: 10-6, 1st in the division, lost in the NFC Championship 9-0 to the Rams, in which the only points scored were 3 FG's (out of 4) made by a kicker whose average that season was 52%.
1980: 5-10-1
Cumulative Total for the half-decade: 22-53-1 (.296)
I'm not sure there's ever been a team with a winning percentage under 30% in a 5 year span to have a playoff win in that span.
This is why we love sports. Sometimes, they make no sense.

In 5 year developments, the Browns recently had a very similar progression
2016: 1-15 [The only win of the season was a literal Christmas miracle. The Chargers kicking unit was especially cursed around these years. A blocked field goal and miss set back the firing of Hue Jackson by 1.5 years.]
2017: 0-16 [The Factory of Sadness lives up to it's name. It ends up having the worst year in its miserable existence.]
2018: 7-8-1 [You know what's the most Browns way to end your losing streak? WITH A FUCKING TIE. Cleveland finally remembers what winning feels like after almost 2 years.]
2019: 6-10 [After bringing back sparks of hope while almost ending past the .500 line for the first time since 2007, the Browns regress back to normalcy with a very disappointing season, not being able to meet expectations.]
2020: 11-5 [The SECOND iteration of the Browns have finally won a playoff game. The last time the "Browns" won a playoff game was with the 1994 team, who would relocate and rebrand themselves as the Baltimore Ravens.]
Record of this 5 year window: 25-54-1 (0.319)
The Browns' winning percentage of this period is ONLY >2% higher than the Bucs in their first half decade of existence, barely being above the .300 line with a playoff win.
HOWEVER, when you look through a 6 year lens, the Bucs actually won more games, having a record of 31-60-1 (0.342), having added the 1981 season, the sixth year of their existence. Meanwhile, the Browns had a record of 28-67-1 (0.297) within the 6 year window, adding the 2015 season that directly precedes the 5 years listed above. Both teams still maintain the 1 playoff win condition here. No doubt, these two teams hold the honour of having the worst time periods to have produced a playoff win.
These stories should be an important life lesson for people to learn: no matter how miserable life can be, there is no guarantee that a positive experience is unattainable, it is always within reach with the right mindset and support.
Bucs also have 2 SB titles despite having the worst win% in NFL history. They are a curious franchise. Think of this, think of how good the Packers consistently are. The Bucs have more SB wins in the last 23 years than them

You should do a video on the 1-15 2009 rams. They were worse than the 2008 Lions and the 2017 Browns, but no one remembers them because they didn't go winless. In the 16 game era, they averaged less than 11 points per game.
I remember feeling bad for Steven Jackson because he had to play for the Rams. Oh, kid logic is great, isn't it?

33-14. I still remember the score of the Bucs first win ever. I also remember the Orlando Sentinel headline - it showed all 26 losses in small print above BUCS 33 SAINTS 14 in very large print.
I was 7, my grandma had to babysit me that day and she let me watch that game. My grandma fussed me for my foul language.
When my mom came pick me up. Grandma asked her where did I learn to curse like that?

I read about this a bit back, and I found it to be a really sad but interesting story. Its about a quarterback named Greg Cook, who only played 2 seasons in the league due to a horrible career ending injury his rookie year, in which he led the league in passing. Hall Of Fame coach Bill Walsh called him “the greatest talent to ever play the position”. Also had a career of art!
I would really recommend checking it out. NFL Films did a documentary about him and truly is a interesting topic which I’ve seen NOBODY do. Love listening to your videos while doing work :)

The west coast offense was formed because of Greg Cook’s rotator cuff injury. Virgil Carter didn’t have Cook’s arm strength so Bill Walsh created a short passing attack that helped Carter.
Ahh, Greg Cook (RIP). Sad injury and I wish his career would've gone differently, but his career ending inadvertently led to Ken Anderson's Bengals tenure. Being a Bengals fan, I like seeing comments about our guys. Too bad a majority of those comments are of the "what could have been" ilk, but hey.

Long time Bucs fan here who painfully remembers the first 2 seasons. Lots of comments to add ...
1. QB Baryla (sp?) had set all kinds of NCAA records at Stanford. However in the pre-season for seasons 1 and 2, he suffered serious injuries which kept him out of both regular seasons. In fact the second injury ended his NFL career before it began.
2. The Bucs could have won the game against the Dolphins in Season 1 but they had a total meltdown in the last minute. QB Spurrier threw a perfect pass to wide open Bucs receiver in the end zone who apparently was so surprised to see a catchable pass, he froze and the ball bounced off his chest. They could have tied the game with a field goal but the kicker missed an easy chip shot.
3. While the Bucs started out at 0-26, the Chicago Cardinals went 0-29 from 1942 to 1944, but because they combined with the Steelers in 1943 to be the Pitt-Cards, their consecutive loss record is often overlooked.
4. QB Huff was a decent quarterback but he needed 3 to 4 seconds to locate a receiver and throw the pass and the offensive line could only give him 2 to 3 seconds of protection. That's why he threw so many picks.
5. In season 2, none of the NFC teams wanted to be the first team to lose to the Bucs, so they treated their game against the Bucs as if it were a playoff game. Even so, there were some close games where even a little offense could have won the game. Against the Vikings, they were leading 3-2 well into the 4th quarter before the Vikings eked out a TD to win 9-3.
6. Doug Williams was successful as Bucs QB because he could scramble and throw accurately on the run, thus negating the need for an effective offensive line. When he was injured in Season 3 Week 11, backup QB Rae went 0-5 as a starter because he was sacked or forced to throw too soon.
Fun fact, in the same year, the falcons had the best defense in terms of points allowed EVER, and these falcons squared off against the bucs in 77, meaning that the worst offense in history went against the best defense in history, the bucs lost 0-17. (The falcons also had a dreadful offense that season, despite having the best defense ever, they missed the playoffs and finished 7-7.
Where’s the “fun” part?
Worst offense I ever had to sit through for a whole season unfortunately was probably the 2-14 2006 Raiders. As a Raider fan it was brutal. You have Randy Moss Jerry Porter and LaMont Jordan. But with either Andrew Walter or Aaron Brooks at QB it was beyond hopeless and pathetic despite having a good defense.

I was a browns fan from the days of Leroy Kelly 1967 until the end of Bernie Kosars career when they moved to Baltimore I had enough, been a buckeyes fan ever since ! Lol
I'm a Bengals fan but 65 yrs. old so, just prior to the Bengals in 68, we were a Browns household. Bill Nelson QB, Leroy Kelly, Jim Brown, I still want the Brownies to go to a Super Bowl and win.

After the merger and their move to the AFC, they weren't consistently a top team but they were pretty normal varying between good and bad (including playing in three AFC championship games in the '80s).
The dumpster fire only emerged with the new Browns.

@@Stevie8654 Actually, the Seahawks did play in the NFC West in 1976 and then switched with Tampa Bay and played in the AFC from 1977 to 2001 until going back to the NFC West in 2002. I had to look it up. I thought you were correct, also.
The 1976 Tampa Bay Bucs are the worst NFL team ever assembled. Even if they were an expansion team. It was lackluster offense & an uninspiring defense.
The Bucs were avoided by TV audiences back then. No one outside of Tampa Bay would watch them unless their favorite team was playing them.
I mean they were basically only able to get old men and third stringers in the expansion draft due to the crazy rules

Seattle scored 229 points versus Tampa Bay 125 points during their expansion year.
Seattle were WAY better than them... the Lions (1942... and actually a few other editions) were more comparable in term of mediocrity.

I heard that Jim Thorpe was the athlete of the first half of the 20th century until Wilt Chamberlain came along and beat Thorpe out, but Thorpe was definitely the athlete of the first half of the 20th century and Wilt Chamberlain slightly beat him out with his phenomenal athleticism of the second half of the century.
Randy Hedberg has actually had a pretty decent career for himself as a quarterback coach. He's currently at D1 FCS school North Dakota State, where he's worked with a number of solid quarterbacks, including Trey Lance. Hedberg's NFL career may have not been great, but at least he found a place in the sport as a quarterbacks coach.
Just to clear up some confusion over something in this video which is accurate, but many think is wrong.
When the expansion announcement was made, the league said Seattle would be in the AFC West and Tampa in the NFC Central... starting in year two. Their first season would have Seattle in the NFC West and Tampa in the AFC West.
Now both teams are in the NFC.

(Tampa Bay Buccaneers in NFC South)
The NFC South was created in 2002 when the Houston Texans joined the NFL as an expansion franchise, causing a division realignment.
The NFC Central was renamed the NFC North, and the same for the AFC Central becoming the AFC North, along with the creation of two new South divisions for each conference.
Who thinks it’s wrong?
To give another idea of how awful the Buccs were that year, in the 1982 season only 9 games were played. Even with 5 fewer games, no team scored fewer points than the Buccs did in 1977. Given that the amount of games played have only gone up since then, the record for the lowest points scored is very likely unbreakable; I don't want to see what sort of team could do worse in this era.
Interestingly, the Buccs actually had a quite competent defense, allowing less points than the league average; it was buoyed by future Hall of Famer Lee Roy Salmon, who was drafted by the Buccs with the 1st overall pick and stayed with the team throughout his whole carrer.
How sad is that?

On an NFL Top Ten countdown they talked about this Bucs team. John McKay who was a legendary coach at USC before coming to the NFL. After a game he was asked by a reporter Coach what do you think about your offenses execution? And Coach McKay responded I'm all for it. Classic 🤣

I remember Dan McGwire at San Diego State, 6'7" or so and a pretty good QB... but that sure did not transfer to the NFL lol. He was terrible.

The Carolina Panthers and Jacksonville Jaguars going from pretty bad teams to being one game shy of the Super Bowl. In their second season. Featuring wild upsets.
Both teams were given extra draft picks. Which in other years of expansion that wasn't happening and hasn't happened since.

Jacksonville going from 4-7 in their second season to 11-7 and making the AFC title game is, in my opinion, the most improbable winning streak in the history of football.
@@LdyVder They also benefited greatly from free agency during that period....The Panthers were able to pick up really good players like Lamar Lathon,Sam Mills,Wesley Walls and so on through free agency in their first couple of seasons.
@@davidking4838 They were lucky to get in when Morton Anderson missed a chip shot field goal vs. the Jags on the last weekend of 1996. But man they did some damage when they got in. They handed the Bills their first ever loss at Rich Stadium in the playoffs. Then, they shocked the world beating the #1 seeded Broncos. That's when Mark Brunell turned into prime John Elway. Could've beat the Patriots in the title game, but their offense and special teams struggled in terrible weather.
@KTO The Seahawks were originally in the AFC West, NOT the NFC West. They switched to the NFC in 2002. I'm in KC and we used to play them twice per year.

@@Seneka51 I did a quick check before I made the post and out of three sources checked, they all said AFC West then NFC West when they realigned the conferences to accommodate the expansion teams. None of them mentioned the team's conferences being reversed during their first season. I'm not saying you're wrong; it may just be a bit NFL trivia so inconsequential that nobody has ever mentioned it. If so, I'd love to see a video on the series of obvious psychotic breakdowns, acid trips and minor strokes required by the NFL to make the majority of these decisions.
Hard to be an expansion team back in the day. There's a good book that elaborates on Tampa's earliest days (with some funny stories), The Yucks! (by Jason Vuic).

As a lifelong Bucs fan, I am happy that I was too young to root for them until McKay's last season. Of course my Bucs weren't much better for most of the years in my life. Omg those Leemen Bennett years were like us trying to play flag football.. we couldn't tackle anyone during those seasons. Then Ray Perkins ..wow he sucked too. We finally started sparking with Sam Wyche and then Dungy came into town and finally we had a team we could be proud of. All worth it in the end; builds character or so they say.

Reasons why the Bucs started off DOWN BAD
-Owner Hugh Culverhouse was a big reason. Cheap.
-Expansion draft was terrible. It was setup so that basically you were getting NFL teams scraps and soon to be cast offs.

Wanted to “loan” Williams the remaining $200k for some Tampa property that was going to be a super shopping center of some sorts. Thankful he didn’t go for that deal because the property never panned out into a mega shopping center. I think a Walmart is at that site today.
There was no free agency at that time, either. Before 1993, you had to build your roster with the draft, trades, and signing veteran players that other teams didn’t want anymore.

Science has studied these matters; check up some articles online. One very specific example that science has focused on is rape victims being absolutely dead-positive of how their assailant looked, and pulling the wrong guy out of a lineup. 60 Minutes did a story on that one a few years back.
As to McKay, check online for an article by Jason Vuic. It's not long, and it will convince you that McKay never said the "execution" line, even though the story has been reported many times.

For those that remember, the Broncos of the 60s had second hand uniforms! Used a wide receiver as QB and actually played better! Didn’t practice, just meandered around for an hour or so then went home! Used a round top shed as their headquarters! They did manage to win a few games but I still love em!

KTO sometimes makes videos about things I never thought/cared about, and I still always watch his videos until the end. Kudos KTO for putting out such interesting content.
I remember going to see a home game the opening season with my dad. Even though the Dolphins were all the rage in my area I became a fan instantly. I always told my friends during 70's 80's and even 90's they were gonna be super bowl champions some day. I always got laughed at. It took a while but I finally got a little satisfaction.

So I’ve been watching KTO since 2017 and this is very cool for me because Gary Huff happens to be my grandfather..
One thing I would like to mention that wasn’t brought up in the video:
Huff was injured against Green Bay ;the clip is actually @ 8:35. The video begins to mentions his return and then their lack of offensive production after the Seattle game but fails to mention that he did not play in 4 of those five games. As terrible as that season was when my grandfather returned from injury they were able to get their last two wins against New Orleans and Saint Louis. I’m not saying that this was some world class offense and I can reassure my grandfather wouldn’t say that either. Nevertheless I wanted to clear up a few things.

Your content has always been very positive when most sports media focuses on the negatives. If it wasn’t for your channel I would’ve never taken an interest in leagues like USFL, I would’ve never became a fan of Herschel Walker, and overall would’ve not grown in appreciation for multiple generations of football. I 'tried' being a fan of the Bucs in those years, we had just moved to the Tampa Bay area in 76 and in 10th grade the excitement never came, I mean zero moments from any plays to be excited about. But it helped getting Leroy Selmon. The man was every bit of what we enjoy from Brockers today.
I had the complete opposite experience, I was living in Longview WA in the late 70s', and became a fan of the Seahawks very early on. They had a terrible defense but they hand Zorn and Largent and would do trick plays. They had no problem airing out the ball and in order to stay in games they had to try to outscore their opponent, so games were always fun to watch even if the team lost in those early years.
After the Seahawks won the Superbowl people would talk about bandwagon fans, but that was fine with me, I jumped on the bandwagon in the late seventies and have been on every since, even in the late eighties early nighties when they were just terrible.

But the late game always featured the great break-in highlights of Zorn to Largent were pretty much routine. And would be so happy to have something like that going on in the Bucs organization. Then in 1983 - 85 I got orders to go to McChord AFB in Washington and got to see Zorn to Largent every weekend still along with Paul Scansi, Brian Blades, Kenny Easley playing their hearts out. They were exciting to watch and very creative under Chuck Knox. Positive Years to be watching football and watching the Hawks.

What's CRAZY is the super fast turnaround for the Bucs after their first two miserable seasons. In 1979, they made it all the way to hosting the NFCC game. The Rams beat them 9-0 in a game that was played in a monsoon type downpour. It very well could've been Tampa vs Pittsburgh in the Super Bowl that year.

Fun fact about Make Boryla: He made the 1975 Pro Bowl with 6 Touchdowns, 12 interceptions and 996 passing yards. Only reason why he made the Pro Bowl was because nearly 10+ NFC QBs said No to the Pro Bowl and the NFL just wanted somebody and Mike said sure.
And the pro bowl MVP went to a member of the losing team.

I was just thinking about my oldest memory of Kirkland, Wa today.
My dad played on the Seahawks and he took me to practice when I was about 6. 1977 season the year after this.
This was my view from the 2nd floor of the facility when I watched him practice. So weird I saw this today.
They tore the facility down and moved down the lake. Bill Gates office is there now.

A very fun *awful* offense, at least with its team, was the 1992 Seahawks. While they weren't *technically* as bad as the 77 Bucs, they're easily in top contention for worst modern offense. They went 2-14 and truly deserved that record.
Also, Cortez Kennedy won Defensive Player of the Year on the same team.
Yeah they averaged 8.8 PPG on the season for an entire offense, but their defense was one of the better defenses in the league.
What was the story with their QB situation? Cause Dave Krieg left the team in free agency for the Chiefs and all was left at QB were Kelly Stoufer, Dan McGwire, and Stan Gelbaugh.
Were they intentionally trying to tank and rebuild? Cause how did they go into the season feeling confident with that as their only options!
