  • Esports in 2024 is a curious case indeed: As big investors are stepping out, Saudi Arabia is stepping in, pouring billions into this thriving yet fragmented industry. But is Saudi Arabia genuinely boosting esports, or is it a strategic play at the cost of the industry’s independence? With concerns about an esports monopoly, I’ll unpack Saudi Arabia's real impact. What's in store for esports - global recognition or commercial exploitation?

      I think the sports washing accusations are mostly just fear mongering. I think what people are actually concerned about is when governments directly orchestrate take overs and mergers. Its only natural for people to be concerned when one state has complete control over their favorite sport.
      Saudi Arabia has a big responsibility to accommodate to the international fans values, if they fail to do this, I can’t see esports succeeding in Saudi hands. MBS seems like a forward thinking guy on the surface, hopefully he can make it work.

    • @andrzejszpak688
      @andrzejszpak688 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      What I would say to the saudis is to be aware that you are not investing in domestic sports like the NFL in America, you are investing in sports that are popular internationally.
      Accommodating to international values is not only a matter of good faith, it is critical to the financial success of the sports.
      Just because you own it doesn’t mean it truly belongs to you. The fans will always voice their concerns.
      If the Saudis are able to acknowledge these concerns, I think people will be very open to Saudi operated sports. I think its great what they’re for esports and the new esports olympics is a big win for esports and I am hopeful for the future of esports in Saudi hands.

It was the orgs that bled money because they didn't bother to build revenue streams or demand those from publishers. All they had was fleeting VC investment. One org jacked up on VC could drive player salaries up for everyone. There is not a single esports player on these big stages that generates as much return for their org as they are being paid.

    "They're not and never will be politically neutral"
    The games and eSports are neutral. The people aren't. If you see a game that's focused too much on bringing a "diversity" to a game, you'll see that it's gonna fail, since every game's entire foundation is "fun", not being diverse. If you watched Half Life 20 years documentary, you'll find a quote from Gabe Newell about gaming in general: "We have to redefine what 'fun' is." That means that the definition of fun is absurdly blurry and bringing unnecessary stuff to the game, why would it be fun anymore?
    Look, I know you're trying to have a middle ground by saying both good things and bad things from KSA move of funding e-sports. But in my perspective, since the prince's answer is so pragmatic, I don't think it has anymore agenda than just "oh esports looks like a cool business venture, we have lots of wealth fund, why not?". You should know that the Arabian prince loved Dota so much that one of the reason that Dota 2 has its biggest single-game tournament prize ever in gaming wa because one of the prince was literally whaling the tournament's battle pass to get the content. And this battle pass is directly adding money to the prize pool of the game.
    Why do we never see a "state is funding the game"? Because KSA has a monarchy government where the state controls most of the resource. Is it a bad thing? Depends on your government. As long as the state is controlling the resources fairly and the citizen lives with happy lives, it should be good right? I think westerners are so used to "people running the country = bad" that will generalize every country's "absolute state power" as "bad", because they think absolute power means exploitation of resources.
    I've been following esports for years now, and I saw many government funded esports tournament went just normal without those nonsense. Malaysia, Indonesia, Uzbekistan, Russia, UAE, Belarus, Mongolia, Georgia, all has state funded esports tournament. Most of them only for locals because they're underfunded and can't invite tier 1 teams in the world as it became much more expensive to host (and many teams will not join since the prize pool is not comparable and "not worth the long trip"). But many state-funded international tournament has been held by IESF (Russia), IESPA (Indonesian), hell even BEF (British) has their own state funded tournament. Is it fair?
    Why can't we just view esports as is? The pro player just want to play the game. The team just want to be at least break even. People outside of gaming commenting about everything but the game itself.
    To see why the esports needs funding so badly, watch Modern MBA's video about the economics of esports.

    there are 2 things you should note are:
    1: one of the reasons those companies have started using micro transactions and dlc after dlc in recent years , IS because of saudi players... because majority of them are so rich, that spending itself is a kind of fun for them.
    2: this vast money makes the future games more and more leaning towards casual games and competitive games and might make gaming industry look away from RPG and science fiction games... which is really really sad imo.

    Right out of the gate it has to be said the tough-to-swallow truth is that in big parts it's the fans fault that esports can be bought up by the Saudis.
    Esports fans don't spend money to support the scene. That's just how it is. Ask any esports viewer if they would be willing to support PPV and you will receive monumental backlash with ridiculous arguments like that would kill esports. Brother, it's already dead because nobody is paying anything!
    Developer overreach (especially by Riot Games) is another reason. To them esports is just a marketing exercise for the casual game. They actively suppressed natural grass roots movements (like how Riot shut down OGN, which was profitable thanks to PPV) or try to create them artificially (Activision Blizzard with OWL, which was an astroturfed failure from day 1).
    That left teams with few options, they became dependent on VC money. But in order to get the biggest deals they all started to lie about numbers. They conflated video games with esports and actively massaged and made up all the numbers they could in order to make it seem like a more attractive investment. Many publishers did the same (again, most notably Riot Games and Activision Blizzard). The desperate need to be recognized by the mainstream stomped out grass roots development and overinflated everything into a bubble.
    And then there were of course the countless grifters and tourists that were in it for a quick buck and exploit the hype like locusts moving from one thing to the next. It was in their interest to grow their assets as quickly as possible and then dump them at the peak before it all came crashing down. A classic pump and dump scheme.
    Now the bubble popped because nobody invested into building a sustainable ecosystem. Everything is dependent on outside investment and the fans were never conditioned to pay.
    Desperate for cash and at the verge of collapse they now go to the next sugar daddy. And the Saudis are more than willing because they want to improve their economy, their global image and they want to make people indirectly complicit with their barbaric practices, leading to self censorship and less people talking about these issues.
    The layers of abstraction have been wholly stripped away. The same people that change their bio pic to a rainbow flag during pride month and claim to stand for diversity, inclusion and equality are now directly working with a state that is persecuting, executing and oppressing these very same groups. Women are allowed to drive, don't make me laugh. Now we have to be lectured about the mythical gender wage gap by people that actively support a theocracy where women have male guardians. Whataboutisms for days and hollow justifications like organizations crying that they HAVE to do it in order to stay competitive. It's all a comedy.

      Interesting analysis! Esports is a global phenomenon, and there's bound to be a variety of perspectives on how to make it sustainable. Perhaps a focus on building bridges and finding common ground across different regions could be part of the solution.

    • @CountCocofang
      @CountCocofang 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@SaeedMSR It's possible to make it sustainable but for that people would have to admit that it's not as big as they would want it to be (either for self-affirming or monetary reasons).
      Don't pay players millions of bucks a year even though they hardly generate that value (not in exposure, not in winnings, not in brand and name recognition) over their entire lifetime.
      Don't rent the biggest stadiums that you can't fill and then have to hand out the tickets for free just to make it seem less empty (yes, that happened).
      Normalize PPV and foster an environment where esports fans are encouraged to spend money to support the scene.
      Stop developer overreach and let third party organizers make tournaments.
      Gatekeep the industry to keep tourists and pump-n-dump grifters out.
      Force revenue share from publishers. To them esports is a marketing exercise and they sell more of their product to the casuals based on esports exposure. Make them make skins for teams.
      For an ecosystem to be sustainable it needs the ability to keep going without outside interference. Bloody oil money or VC investors gambling on times-X returns is not how you create that.
      You also have to decide how you would want to "build bridges". You cannot simultaneously tout, posture and scold others based on moral principles and then work for people that violate all of that just because they offer the bag.

    OWL was ridiculous! that format was never gonna work. The seasons they had better performance and more than likely most revenue were the first 2 seasons when they stayed in Burbank. The idea of touring around the world like a circus was logistically ludicrous. The best they could have done was stick to open tournament formats or actual American style league format, where we have at least 2 leagues split into different conferences to avoid so much touring and how expensive, time absorbing and exhausting that can be. Just to think of a format like that exclusively for NA would have been hard, even more so with the whole earth sphere involved. The amount of money they were asking from the e-sports organizations was also ridiculous. Hence why some of the most important ones like Liquid and 100 thieves didn't touch that league with a 1000ft pole 😂

    • @CR0WYT
      @CR0WYT 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      What's crazy is that OW esports fans actually want that back. The new OWCS format is objectively better and it's what the OWL should've been from the start, but fans don't like it because they don't have the familiar league teams when they should've never existed in the first place, let alone for 6 years. Fans even flamed Blizzard for "firing" Soe not realizing that the position she worked in simply didn't exist anymore, so you can't really keep paying someone for an imaginary job position, which convinced me that OW fans have their perspective of esports completely warped after so many years of the OWL.

    • @kopite4434
      @kopite4434 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@CR0WYT I've not seen the new format, I've basically uninstalled blizzard from my life, it was starting to become a toxic relationship 🤣🤣🤣 but that's how it is. Blizzard fans in general tend to be very defensive of their favorite company, simpin or not. I myself used to, not precisely go on the defense, but of the mentality that: "maybe they'll fix this soon" and that's how it was for the past 8 years until i became unhealthy and sick for grinding games and lacking proper diet and exercise until i had enough. I finally understood that neither the company or fanbase will change so I took the L and left. But the OWL, i still stick to my guns, was never gonna work, if they revive OW e-sports hopefully it will be more localized with multiple worldwide conferences that have multiple leagues. As for Soe, I didn't really mind the drama much ever, I had enough of that Q-ing up, but idk if she herself has shared her thoughts on the matter or if its just a bunch of fuckboy simps on Twitter (I'm sorry, X!) bitching cause they want their wet dream back. But if she hasn't said she feels an unfair scenario happened, maybe they should analyze the facts and facts are, she's a 30+ woman, married, her partner makes proper money to fend for both and she's also a mother now that has a little infant who perhaps she wants to spend more time with. Perhaps, adding those factors in can shed some light.

    • @CR0WYT
      @CR0WYT 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@kopite4434 OWCS is an open circuit system. Players play through open qualifiers and play through Splits within their own region to qualify for Majors that consist of the top players from each region. Orgs like ENCE, Fnatic, and NRG already made their return to Tier 1 through open qualifiers or taking in new talent. Restrictions between tiers and franchised spots no longer exist. People don't like it because it's not as flashy as OWL was, but this is basically a hard reset on OW esports and a much healthier system that actually has a chance at reviving the esport or at least bringing it back to the pre OWL days.
      The Soe situation is just a case of not understanding how the business model works. OWL was exclusively owned and funded by Blizzard, which included the staff, so Soe being "fired" wasn't because Blizzard didn't want her. Her position simply ceased to exist along with the OWL as a whole. She's still in OW esports, but under contract with FaceIt since they now run the NA and EMEA side of OWCS. Everyone called out Blizzard for making a dumb mistake for firing her not realizing what the actual situation was and not realizing that she's still technically "fired" from Blizzard. Most OWL fans that only watched OWL just don't know how these esports leagues work.

      @@CR0WYT ah! Gotcha! Yeah, they basically went back to basics, the good ol cannot possibly fail format that others like CSGO have been using forever or at least something similar. This shouldn't have changed IMO, they should have just done this if they really wanted the e-sports scene to grow in OW to the very least, not disallow them to continue with an open format like this while having their top tier league in One Country, instead of a worldwide traveling circus that logistically was not gonna work. I don't even know if OWL made them profit when it came to revenue vs spending.
      Ah! Well, people at this time n age, find it hard to find things to get busy on, so they spend time making shit up without looking at the whole frame. They Focus on one simple aspect of the issue like every one focuses the rival tank instead of realizing the opposite team also has 4 other players. They don't see everything else involved in a project like owl. I wouldn't even bother arguing with them, you won't change em, plebs will pleb and there's nothing we can do about it 🤷🏻‍♂️
