I was there. I was about 20 feet from where the second girl was rescued from the crowd. Bono could see they where being crushed, and that's why he raced over to the second girl and jumped down himself, he could see she was being crushed. The entire mood of the day, was the only time in my life, like i literally felt like we the people, where more important than the music. It was incredible, there was nothing contrived about Bono dancing with that girl, it was just a day where, we literally tried to live and send, as much love and hope as possible, as twee as that sounds. I still have my Live Aid T-shirt, bought on the day, U2 were only bested by Queen, although to be fair, Queen at Live Aid, was voted the best rock performance of the 20th century. And it was. I am in my 50's now, but i remember it like yesterday..

U2 were not bested by Queen .... Queen although were amazing, they played it safe and played the "hits" ... Mercury was extraordinary, but Bono risked it all ... his life, U2´s life and played 2 songs that were not "singles" ... "Sunday Bloody Sunday" would turn into a hymn but was not a hit, was not a single, and nor was "Bad" a new song on the recent album "The Unforgettable Fire" ... U2 could have played "New Years Day" / "Pride In The Name Of Love" / "I Will Follow" / "Gloria" and safelly recieve the recognition for their songs / hits ....
They chose not to, they chose the meaning of the event instead of the predictable situation which would have been to glorify themselves (like Queen and everybody). U2 were unique that day ... and have always been ...
U2 is the greatest band of all time.

Now that is a Rock Star!. Hard to imagine any band being better in a moment with 1 billion people watching than this.
Ive seen U2 live several times. Once in the ‘80’s and a couple of times in the ‘90’s. They were the hardest working band on the circuit. They gave 100% every time.
It's been literally decades and still whenever U2 play Bad live the crowd goes crazy. An absolute classic

I remember this like yesterday, bono was only 25 yrs old than and had a great vocal range and was coming off the Unforgettable Fire tour and loved to interact with the audience
This is a masterpiece in human connection and Bono with a glorious ability to exist with no barriers.
This is not only U2's best ever live performance (IMO) but one of the greatest live performances of all time. Improvised brilliance form the band when Bono disappeared to ground level. Even the bit when Larry drum rolled as soon as Bono re-emerged.
yeah Larry never has ever done that part in a performance of Bad before or since this performance.
You need to check out the Us Festival performance. Bono pulls girl out of the audience, then he climbs to the top of the stage.
From a Little Rock on the western edge of Europe, Ireland , my home, really does produce amazing music. I'm Irish and so proud when I watch u2 do there thing.

This extended Bad, meaning they couldn’t play the rest of their short set list. Epic...
unfortunately, the song that was cut was "Pride (In the Name of Love)" which would have been incredible at Live Aid.
It was great that it was extended , I like ‘Pride’ but the Live Aid version of Bad has become so iconic and memorable.
@@amnril true...and future versions of the song featured some epic guitar by Edge...it would have been great to hear him really cut loose in the long gap here, but he probably just didn't know how long it would be so didn't really let go.
Loyal I do agree that Pride had to be cut. But I find that a blessing. Absolute no disrespect to Dr. King, a great man, but the extended version of Bad was exceptional. Much more hypnotic than Pride.
A version I'll never be tired of watching. Utter classic. If you like this version a year later they did another show for the homeless and drugs in their home country Ireland. You should have a look at it. It's called Self Aid and that version of Bad is topping this version

She is not in the front row because she wants to be close to Bono. “My sister and I were desperate to see Wham!, so we had made it down to the front of the stage,” she explained... Bono saw she was being overwhelmed by the Wembley crowd. The U2 legend leapt off stage and pulled her free -- then smooched with her as his band played on.
Kal, of Hampstead, North London, said: "The crowd surged and I was suffocating -- then I saw Bono.
"Security helped him pull me out, then he held me and we danced. My heart was pounding."

The roadie in the sleeveless shirt handling Bono's microphone was Greg Carroll, who tragically was killed in a motorcycle accident the following year in 1986. The motorcycle belonged to Bono. U2 wrote the song "One Tree Hill" in his loving memory and it is included on "The Joshua Tree" album.
Bono and Larry attended his tangi in, Aotearoa.
I've seen U2 several times in concert they're my second favorite band behind Rush and I will never forget going to the concert in 2001 in Madison square Garden right after 9/11 it was the first show they were doing at the Garden after the towers fell and they scrolled the names of the deceased upon this canvas that went up in the center of the arena and it was the most amazing moment I'll ever experience in a concert period. They always knew how to make a poignant statement.

important to note: U2 wasn't a huge band at this point. They definitely had fans but...this performance and the next album began their superstardom
They were on the cusp though. The "Unforgettable Fire" tour was seeing them break out from smaller venues into basketball/hockey arenas. I had just seen them at the Capital Centre in Landover,MD in April of '85 (also got to see them at DAR Constitution Hall in DC,with The Waterboys opening for them in December of '84 on a quick little mini-tour they did to promote the album dropping,top 5 concert ever for me) and they sold out those 20.000 or so seats FAST.
For sure though that their performance at Live Aid set them up to be launched into the stratosphere,along with their performances a year later on the Amnesty International Conspiracy of Hope Tour.
Guys, come on, do I need to point out the obvious here? U2 were playing an early evening set at Live Aid at around the same time as iconic acts such as Queen and David Bowie ffs, of course they were already HUGE! They were introduced on stage via satelite from Philadelphia by Jack Nicholson, who asked to be allowed to introduce them. They just became even bigger, but so did almost every act who played that day.
U2 was already quite huge, but mostly among real musicfans. I was a fan of U2 at that time, but together with one other we were the only ones in school and neighborhood who knew U2 at all. And yes, WE were 'famous' for that. Yet no one wanted to know.
Then came Live Aid. And i'm not exaggerating if i say that the very next they all hell broke loose at school: everyone was talking about it: U2 and Sunday Bloody Sunday.
They might have been already quite some band by then, but how i experienced it, it was this performance that launched them to the stars.
They were already known for being a band with their own sound and strong lyrics, otherwise they would not have been invited to this event full of established bands and artists
Remember Bono had the most profound line in “Do They Know It’s Christmas 🎄” so the anticipation of the young and rising band from Ireland was high that day.
This performance put U2 on the map globally. It was one of the best of the whole series.
Everyone talks about Queen's performance that day and rightly so but this performance by U2 put them on the map and showed that there was a worthy successor to Freddy on the same stage by the name of Bono.
Young Lady, that is, for me, THE single greatest performance in the history of music....
And, because YOU are so nice, I will tell you some facts....the young man that hands Bono his microphone in this video, was a Maori (from NZ) named, 'Greg Carrol' who died in New Zealand in a motorcycle accident shortly after this show....subsequently, Bono wrote the song 'One Tree Hill' from the Album 'The Joshua Tree', and the group dedicated the entire album to him....The album won the Grammy for 'Album of the Year' 1987 and had 2 number one hits, 'With or WithOut You' and 'I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For'... For my own personal self, I have seen u2 all over the world, been a fan for 40 years now....the best way I can sum up u2 is this...'U2-The Deeper you dig, the more you will like....' Cheers.

Important to note there was no internet in the year this concert took place so no youtube!! We only had VHS video tape recorders. Bono was singing words from several other songs including 2 rolling stones numbers. The concert was also being held simultaneously live in Fort Lauderdale. Phil Collins performed at wembley then caught Concorde to fly supersonic to uSA and later drummed for Led Zeppelin when the Live Aid concert continued there due to 5 hours time difference. This was the first time a concert was beamed via satellite live all over the world for live aid!! So landmarks in many respects!!

This is when U2 was introduced to the world. Their popularity sky rocketed after the world saw this... then Joshua Tree made them the biggest band in the world.

I was 24 going on 25. I watched the U2 set live in Australia on the TV during the early hours of the morning - it was nightime in Australia. It still sends goosebumps down my spine - knowing how Bono went completely off-script as the band played such a long version of "Bad" - & were unable to play their third & final song "Pride". During "Bad" in Live Aid - U2 were discovered by the rest of the world - it was a defining moment for the band.
I watched live aid all day that Saturday in 1985. I was 14 years old. I had 8 hours of it recorded on vhs tape but my mom recorded over the entire thing.

Me too, I was 13, stood in front of TV most of the day. Even at that age I knew it was epic and historic, cried a wee bit at Bad, has that effect on me to this day!. My mum went one further than yours: I had tickets for the Joshua Tree tour in 87 and she forbade me to go ( picturing crowds like live aid n me an asthmatic) I've reminded her of it a few times a year ever since lol. I see u2 Joshua Tree tour in 1987 at Murrayfield rugby stadium. Paid £69 for a coach from Dover to Edinburgh a night in a hotel plus the u2 ticket. Best time of my life. See them again at Twickenham Stadium for the vertigo tour. I've seen many more concerts like Tracy Chapman. sting. Peter Gabriel. Simple Mind. Red Hot Chili Peppers. And many more. My biggest regret was not seeing queen
I was 17. We were on holiday in Majorca on that day and flew back during the day. So, flew back to the UK and continued watching when I got home. A friend recorded the day on VHS.

U2 has a real connection with their fans. At the end of every live U2 show I’ve been to, Bono thanks the fans for giving them a life they love. Their new Sirius XM channel has a regular show that features U2 fans selecting and introducing their personal Top 5 U2 songs. They’ve been my favorite band since 1983...best live act EVER!!

Bono said he didn't feel they were connecting with the crowd so he started motioning for security to allow someone up on stage. He then saw the dark haired girl, who he danced with, being pushed up against the barrier, so he jumped down to stop her from getting hurt. U2 was actually scheduled to play 3 songs (Sunday Bloody Sunday, Bad and Pride), but because of him jumping off stage, they ran out of time before performing Pride.

Missing that one song and the act of kindness is what threw them to the top! It seemed like a mistake at first to the band, but what a huge surprise they got!!!!!
The band WAS really connecting with the crowd during the song. But Bono *always* wants to get as close as possible to the audience-more than normal lead singers do.
There was a big gap between the Live Aid stage & where the first fans were-and Bono wasn’t accustomed to that (U2 were famous then but not global superstars yet). So he jumped down a level to where the camera & sound guys were. Then when he saw the 15-yr-old being crushed, he jumped off the stage completely. (Which is crazy because he’s actually scared of heights, but says when he performs he sometimes gets so into it he’s nearly loses his head.)
In later years U2 pioneered innovation stages with long narrow catwalks & such that would allow Bono to be out in the middle of a stadium crowd for whole songs. GREAT video. 👍

Also recal Bono saying he went to a Led Zeppelin concert as a teen or some other band maybe and he wanted to get close to his audience like they did when he became a band member himself something like that its ben decades since I read it but yes Zoo TV started the stage platforms into the audience that we see today imo
Live Aid was designed to fight apartheid in South Africa. Bob Geldolf was apart of an unknown, in America, band called the Boomtown Rats, ... truly amazing what an unknown person can do to fight injustice and spark the world's attention

This almost broke the band up, Edge was furious at Bono for his antics here. I agree with him here, this song is so powerful on its own, and the reality that they were still somewhat unknown. Reportedly, after they played Edge left without speaking and boarded a jet.
This is great. You know, after this performance, all five of U2's LPs at the time went back into the UK charts; such was the interest in the band after this epic 20 minute show or whatever it was. This unexpected windfall allowed the band to spend more time on their next record, which would become The Joshua Tree.
That record didn't do too badly at all!

I remember this day like it was today, I was 17 and waited all day for them to come on about 5ish, I was mocked back then for being a fan especially from the old man, he shouted me from the room to tell me yer bands on in 5, I finished the washing up and ran into the room, half way through Bad the volume went up a couple of notches, then the magic happened, not Bono jumping in the crowd but looking across and seeing the old man tapping his foot in time to the beat, I will never forget his smile when he realised he'd been busted, it was a validation to me and a moment of dawning for him, dad may be gone but the memory will last

The love and seance of unity on that day was something to behold.
Notice how Bono pulled a black African woman out of the crowd as live aid was to help millions of black Africans . A lovely touch which made the U2 performance perfect.

A great video I saw was Chester Bennington singing in the middle of a crowd and gravitated to a young girl. It was raw, emotional, amazing. Unfortunately I saw this video a few weeks after his death. He was truly loved

If you think this is the best you should watch the version of Bad they did in Dublin Ireland for charity a year later 1986. Name of the concert was Self Aid. Let me know what you think

Well U2 had originally more songs to play but because of him having to help the poor lady who was being suffocated in the crowd they instead made it an extended version of the song.. They ( the band ) never missed a beat. That's talent.!!!
At the time I think we felt that the girl he danced with was a proxy for the audience, for the world. For the love U2 was trying to say we should all have for each other. Especially at a time like this.

I've seen U2 in concert many times. I saw them in Chicago in 2018 and in Indianapolis in 2017. Both were insanely good concerts.

I saw them at the LA Coliseum in the late 80s (before Joshua Tree). I still have an unused ticket from that show because one of my friends couldn't make it at the last minute. Face value, printed on the ticket: $15.
Another fun fact. They were supposed to play a set but this was such a moment for them they kept it going BTW No pics No cell phones in 85

I seen U2 live after that Bono pickeed up at the concert I was to three girls. He had also an champagne bottle with him who the girls poored over him while they all hugged him. Until the guards took them of the stage. This was 1991. My favorit song with U2, where the streets have no name. And Sonday bloody sunday. It was through most of us discovered them

We saw Bono and U2 do the same sort of thing in the "Under A Blood Red Sky" video, filmed at Red Rocks Amphitheater . He grabbed a girl out of the crowd to dance with her to "Party Girl", I think it was. I believe I read or heard an interview once (a long time ago) saying that Bono (and the rest of the band) were really influenced by Bruce Springsteen and Bruce was known for bringing a girl out of the audience to dance with (hence the "Dancing in The Dark" video). Anyway, really cool. Bono is the man.
He also sang to his own daughter, Eve on a couple of occasions. He did “Party Girl” for her on her birthday and when she was younger, he brought her up to dance during “Mysterious Ways.”

Just in case you are interested I've got a bittersweet story. In 1984 the band went to New Zealand, one night Bono couldn't sleep and wanted to wander around a bit. One of the people who accompanied him was a Maori 20 yo guy, Greg Carroll. They became good friends and Greg left home to travel with the band as a roadie. He's the guy who jumps on stage to pick up the microphone around min 8:20. He died in 1986, in an accident driving Bono's motorbike. Bono wrote for him One Three Hill, which is a sacred place in the Maori culture, and one amazing song I strongly suggest you to listen to :)

They never got around to playing thier hit at the the time Pride (In The Name Of Love) due to Bonos excursion....the band had a huge row back stage and were very seriously considering firing Bono at the time. It was only when they saw the publics reaction afterwards that they realised they were one of the stand out performances of Live Aid and it elevated the band.

@@KristinKali There were quite a lot of good performances that day, both in London and Philadelphia. But three artists/bands absolutely put the rest in their shadows: U2, Queen and David Bowie (in no particular order).
U2 has a special connection with thier audiences and the live performance experience can not be topped.

Had to play a lotta 100 rooms and 500 rooms, 1K Rooms and 5k rooms. They played the Joshua tree tour without anything special. But in the past 30 years U2 just wanted to blow your mind. Kinda makes a Pink Floyd laser show look like flashlight tag.

When they recorded the "Where The Streets Have No Name" video in Las Vegas I just happened to be downtown with my Uncle at the Freemont....we came outside to all the commotion and there was the band roaming around with everyone being filmed for the video.....when Bono jumped on the hood of the car at the end of the video, we were literally 20 feet from him and he saw us laughing....he approached us and said...."Are you guys fans or just here for the hype?" I replied....(mind you I was 21 years old)...."There's enough hype already in Vegas, we're fans!" and he laughed and asked what happened to my leg....of which I had broken my ankle a few weeks prior, needless to say Bono signed my cast with a Sharpie (of which I still have to this day)...and Adam gave my Uncle a beer.

Wembley Stadium in the tiers alone held 100K. to watch mainly a football match. Years later reduced for safety to 92K. Now you telling me there is just 72K there. HMmmmmmm. A great day, I thank my mum I was around to see it live.
For background explanation at 9:00, Bono does not know the girl who was pulled from the crowd. There is an obvious security concern of people being crushed. That's why people are being pulled from the crowd. This song was written from the perspective of someone helplessly watching a heroine addict slowly die. The beautiful section of music at this section of the song doesn't require any singing. So, during the live performance of this song, the singer would dance with someone to this section of music to demonstrate the bond between the addict and those people who love them. That's also why he sings the medley of the songs "Goodbye Ruby Tuesday", "Sympathy For The Devil", and "Walk On The Wild Side" for thematic consistency at the end. This was a breakthrough for U2 because they had never played to a crowd this large before. Their ability to win over this crowd convinced U2 that they could play stadiums, which is what they still do today.

The people in the crowd weren’t even fans!! This was before the Joshua tree era when they made it “big”. This just proves how good they were(are) & why they still perform at the highest level & make sure that all the other groups aspire to get close to their mastery. Queen were very good on the day also but the longevity of U2 makes them the greatest band of all time & that includes The Beatles!!!

Bono has a thing about wanting to make a connection with the audience so tries to dance with someone on stage. But this was the biggest concert and venue they'd ever been to and no way to get from audience to stage so he had to jump down. Then of course he couldn't get back up. U2 almost broke up after this gig as this was their BIGGEST break ever but they had to cut their third song 'pride'(in the name of love)' which was their big hit, because they ran out of time due to how long it took to do the dance and get back up.
Actually at the time the other band members were pretty pissed off at Bono for taking up so much time, since the band was due to perform 3 songs. Now there was no time anymore to do the third song. They thought they fucked up because of this,,,little did they know this would go down in history as one of the most memorable perfomances and catapult them into superstardom in the years ahead.
He's hugging a fan. Bono was the master of doing and figuring out to "connect" with his audience. These types of connections usually made huge arena shows feel more intimate for everyone.
