  • Definitely worth a watch, all other bands were left in the shadows by Queen on the day, but these guys put on a great performance in their own right.

I'm with you my man. One of my fav bands of all time. I'm 49 and starting listening (thanks to a friend) when I was 14. Then Joshua Tree came out. Changed my life... But today I think Achtung Baby is my favorite album. Just listened to it again this week. "In my dreams, I was drowning my sorrows... but my sorrows they learned to swim."

Timothy Dannenhoffer I’m a year younger than you and they were the same for me... their music came in to my life in my teens and early 20’s at crucial times in my life. This song in particular which gives me chills almost every time I hear it played live.

OMGoodness, me too. Especially songs from the Joshua Tree. I saw them 2 times in 1987, first at MSG, then a couple months later at the Nassau Coliseum. Before that I saw them at Live Aid in Philly. I was sitting all the way at the top just to the right of the stage if you were looking at it. Before that, amazingly, I saw them at Nassau Community College (Long Island) in 1982. I happened to be going there that year and saw that tickets were on sale, I grabbed 2 but I wish I had got more. Yep me and 500 other people. I saw them when they were on the Concert for Amnesty Intl. tour at Giant's Stadium in NJ in 1986, and BTW, Fil, if you're seeing this, I think "Pride In The Name Of Love" from that performance would be an excellent live performance to review. I saw U2 3 times in the 190s, 2 times for the Zoo tour, and 2 times I was in S. Florida for those. So ya, U2, I breathed them. Love them.

I've always thought the hate for u2 is just a trendy thing. Musically they are absolute masters of their craft. I don't know of many other guitarists that can create a soundscape and carry a band like the Edge does. It's all about the music, and serving the song. Then that solid rhythm section and incredible range of voice. Pretty stunning for me....and I love all sorts of bands from heavy to pop.

I saw U2 at Brixton Academy about a year before this. My abiding memory was of The Edge sitting down in front of his pianio with his guitar on his knee playing New Years Day, behind him his single AC30 sitting on a wooden chair with one mic threaded through it's handle hanging over in front of one speaker cone. He might as well have been in his bedroom, belying the monstrous sound coming out of the front of house system. Finishing New Years Day he got up, hit a few switches on his pedal board and immediately launched into Pride. It was a note perfect performance, not a hint of pretentiousness or bombast about it, just pure musicianship of the highest order. The sound was breathtaking. Immaculate.

I have heard people complain that his voice was 'annoying', but the only person I've actually heard say he was a bad singer was Henry Rollins of all people, who really shouldn't be criticising anyone's singing imo lol.

I love U2. I was glued to my television and watched every second I could of Live Aid. It made me proud that musicians were using their talent to provide food for the starving just as many had done in the past for the civil rights movement, the No Nukes movement, the Concert for Bangladesh, Farm Aid and so much more. I don’t necessarily agree with all the politics, but I deeply respect those who spend time improving the lives of others rather than living a destructive hedonistic lifestyle.

I had just graduated high school and was glued to the TV. I was already a massive Queen fan and they blew the whole world away with their performance. I’d heard the name U2, but hadn’t heard them play. The second I heard that opening guitar sound my ears pricked up and they proceeded to blow me away as a new band (to me). Bono has a voice of an angel 😇💖🌹🎶 when he was just a wee last, he'd go to the piano, not reachable, only to his little hands. He's start playing a melody that he either dreamt about the night beforehand or it was a melody that just popped into his head. God gave him a beautiful blessing and no-one gets to take that away from him. I've known him personally for about 22 years now, he's the most incredibly smart, funny and someone who you EASILY get caught up in a conversation that lasts longer than you'd expect. Extremely engaging and just a beautiful person inside and out 🤙💖🌹☄✌💋🙏🏻😇

Enjoyed that. Just to say a couple of things. One, the band had just finished their 10 month world tour of The Unforgettable Fire record just a couple of weeks before this gig - they were ready; and if they were tired it was hard to see. Second, they had planned to play 3 songs in their 20 min slot, Sunday, Bad & then Pride - their hit from the previous winter. Thing is, with the way Bad unfolded on the day, it went 4/5 mins over and thus Pride had to be ditched. The band weren't happy at first after the show about this - but we all knew we had witnessed something special. So, professional yes, but the spirit of the day won out. Mind you, the way the band played on for that 5/6 min instrumental part in the middle, not knowing where the hell their singer had got to - that sure showed commitment and belief!

    • @adiarainfoster
      @adiarainfoster ปีที่แล้ว

@@wingsofpegasus It was more than awol. if you watch closer to the middle, you'll see him gesturing frantically to security. he has spotted a few women being crushed against the railing by the crowd. If you look to where he keeps pointing you can see them. it took a little bit to see what he was trying to do and when they did they pulled two of the panicking ladies over the railing. They missed the third one entirely and after more futile gesturing, that's when Bono hopped over the railing himself and led them to her so they could pull her in. You can see him rocking and comforting her while she caught her breath before going up and giving the first two a hug and continuing the song. The band didn't see any of this go down so yea they were super angry with him afterward and they all thought it was a disaster. couldn't have been further from the truth though :)

I love his operatic voice, That’s what gives me the goosebumps. He doesn’t slack off one bit when he hits those registers. Bono’s voice is a unique operatic one in 6 billion type of talent. His father had the gift and I suspect they sounded very similar and Bono’s son Who is the lead singer for Inhaler sounds identical to Bono when he was a young lad in early 20’s. It’s purely DNA jackpot. I covet his voice.

My life is rearranged completely whenever U2 tour the west coast of the US and I can travel to multiple shows. They are so professional that I never get tired of seeing essentially the same show several times in a row while exhausted from hours of driving, not sleeping and queuing for the GA. They always give 110%, bond with the audience, show unwavering respect, appreciation and love for their fans and each other, have fun, and deliver a powerful social message. I agree about Bono's voice. It is unique and I can pick him out in any collaboration he does. I find a perfect voice a little boring, unless the singer can convincingly reveal some grit. It was Edge's guitar playing in "Mysterious Ways" that first made me a fan, though. 😍

This has always been my favorite performance of "Where the Streets Have No Name." It's from the "U2 Go Home: Live at Slane Castle" DVD in 2001. Bono's open-throated wailing that begins around 4:30 is for his father, whom he had buried just the day before, I believe. Talk about stamina and breath control, too, with the way he takes a full lap around the heart and begins singing without losing his breath! Your 3 fundamental qualities of successful performers definitely apply here.

Well, I'm 63 and I saw them live around 82 in LA, CA. Impressive live band and apparently I was lucky to see them in a smallish arena. They have fun doing what they do and it shows, I think They're one of those bands where the sum of the parts is truly greater than the whole. I bought BOY in 1980. That same year I read an article about their performance in a small place called the Country Club in Reseda, CA. One of the songs they had done didn't get the reaction Bono wanted so they did it over but in a different way and got a standing ovation. If you watch Status Quo do Pictures of Matchstick Men, they have a similar vibe. The band Sweet was similar to some extent and had more talent overall. U2 has that intangible quality that's is rare. Some bands are way more technically talented but hate each other to the extent that they break up. In my opinion, after their first 3 or 4 albums, they went in strange areas but held it all together so, more power to them.

Imperfections in and of themselves can be precious. It’s human to be imperfect. Why is being human not good enough anymore, and this standard of perfection that uses technology to attain it some sort of epitome of “better” or the ultimate? It’s fake.

At that day me and my brother where sitting in front off the television. My brother couldn't wait to see U2. I was 11 years old, never heard of them. That performance made me a U2 fan from that day on. I can't tell, how much musical influence they brought into my life. I read a book about Bono where he said that this live aid concert was at the edge to split the band up. Bonos dancing with the crowd totally breaked the time limit of 20 minutes they had for their performance. So they couldn't play "Pride - In the name of love" any more. Which truly was their outstanding song and should raise the selling of their "Unforgettable Fire" album. Not to be able to play this song because of unplanned actions from Bono was something, the management and band members wasn't amused of. Bono himself felt he has ruined the show and wanted to leave the band. But luckily, he met an sculptor which showed Bono his art he created influenced by the U2 performance. So Bono could see, how people loved the performance that day.

I have always suspected Bono did the snippet of Satellite of Love to check his microphone here. Geldof's had already failed mid-set, Queen had a roadie check Freddie's as they ran on stage. U2 would have just seen Bryan Ferry singing into two mikes as a safety back-up.

1985 I was studying my ass off in a house with some really special people, and we had a U2 Cassette tape. I splurged on my student budget and put in nice speakers and one of my roommates came and said she wanted to go party but my car had the best sound so I lent her the car, and the cassette.
We listened to Live Aid since it was on a Saturday and we needed a break from studying. Queen was phenomenal, but there was the luggage they had from playing in South Africa. They overcame that with that performance. There was no question, U2 was a great performance. I really thought that Edge carried the band, with his sound. Funny, but the bassist was concentrating on Bono, usually they are keying off the drummer. Why was that? Reading the comments, maybe Bono had a problem with his voice?

Thank you for reviewing this, one of my all-time favorite U2 performances. As well as being practiced and ready to seize this opportunity in their career, the professionalism of the band really came to the forefront when Bono left the stage later in this song. The band had to carry on playing for an interminable length of time at the climax of the song with no idea where Bono was or when he would return to let them bring the song back down again. A lot of people are quick to put U2 down for various things, but I liked how you politely expressed your opinion and showcased some of the aspects that make this band so great! There's no denying how influential that their sound was and continues to be. Personally, I just describe their sound as being magical. I don't exactly know what that means, but there's no other word that I would rather use to describe them and the way their music makes me feel. I don't know any other band that makes me feel that way :)

I think this is A - Asus2 - D - Dsus2 (or something like that) over and over on guitar. It wouldn't be easy at all to keep that in time (and he doesn't do it perfectly here) but I'm amazed at what he can get out of basically 2 chords.

Totally agree about Bono's voice and the Edge's playing both completely unique. So much emphasis perfect sound editing and voice pitch & control takes everything out of music these days! I love it when a vocalist's voice begins to crack and they control it and it becomes a cool sound mistake. No such thing as mistakes these days and most concerts are boring as a result clic tracks, and pre recorded voice overs. I think that is why music sounds better in the 60's & 70's. It was real!

@Dale Cooper I wouldn't call U2 "relatively unknown" at this point but I'm probably knit-picking a bit. U2 became my favorite band when "October" was released. I bought "Boy" a month later and made a "U2" sticker on a machine at work and put it on my car. I had to explain who U2 were *until* MTV picked up "New Years Day". Then, quite a few people had heard of U2 but most still had not. As others have said, Live Aid made U2 a household name which probably helped establish an audience curious to hear what they would record next.

You might want to check out more of U2's other songs as they have over 14 studio albums; and have been going for over 40 years. Oh and also they happen to have sold more live than any other band in history. The Joshua Tree (1987) is one of the fastest selling albums of all time and is big in America but was gigantic in the late 80's/early 90's. Achtung Baby (1991) is probably U2's best album.

As a 14 year old at the time, the 3 performances I remember clearly from live aid are Queen, U2 and Status Quo. They were all brilliant on the day for various reasons. U2 were the surprise package on the day and no wonder they went on to be the massive live band that they did. Nothing needs to be said about Queen and Freddy and Quo were the most perfect band to kick it all off. Oh, I also remember Led Zep but I don't want to speak about that........

    • @wingsofpegasus

  • @wewhofly
    @wewhofly 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

U2 were not unknown. They already had quite a following, perhaps more in America than Europe even then. But British audiences knew them. They already had a solid 'cult' following. Had three albums under their belt. I know many younger pop/rock fans knew all about all the other established acts but U2 were the group they waited for - not as an unknown but as a band that already had a reputation live. They played one of the largest festivals in California in '83 live on MTV, and had their Live at Red Rock album, also from '83.
Bono even in later years often introduced the band as though 'new'.

Bono is definitely one of the best rock singers of all time. Bono has been classified as a tenor, and has a three-octave vocal range; one analysis found it to span from C♯2 to G♯5 on studio recordings. Let those who criticize Bono's singing try singing a U2 song on Karaoke night without making fools of themselves. Anyway, the performance of Bad in Rattle and Hum is much better. Perhaps you can analyze the entire performance of 'Two Hearts Beat as One' from the Live from Red Rocks video. Bono's voice is top-notch. Thanks. Keep up the great videos!

On this level, on the top over the top, it is not human to write smash songs for 40 years. There are some guys that create great music for 50 years or more - Dylan, Van Morrison, Robert Plant (my taste) - but they do not play in the biggest venues any more. But U2 are one of the greatest ever - in quality and success

    • @johnnyd.5466

I think maybe the problem is they were "too" great. I don't know of a band that could sustain "Joshua Tree," "Achtung Baby" quality 40+ years in. While some of their recent output has truly awful tracks, there are still some corkers. "Red Flag Day" from their last album could have been "War" era.

I remember at the time being so underwhelmed by Simple Minds' set (who really were massive) and now I view them as at the start of their decline, while U2 were just primed and ready to take their place.
I've been hooked on that guitar style of The Edge, right back to that intro' riff on 'I Will Follow'. Bono's singing voice I think fits that pop/rock niche perfectly in a not-untouchable, kid down our street sort of way. His spoken word, too much pulpit, and the actual reason for so much of the aversion to U2.
    But anyway...that mullet!

I like Bono's voice, too, more than almost any. However, when he first starts this song it sounds as if he's not warmed up yet, and frankly the pitch and timbre of his opening lyrics would have peremptorily ended an audition had Simon Cowell been sitting there with a buzzer.
