WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MICROTECH® AND MARFIONE CUSTOM KNIVES®?
Microtech® Knives and Marfione Custom Knives® are two revered names in the knife industry, known for quality and design above all else. Microtech® Knives was formed in 1994. Marfione Custom Knives® was created after, with a specific focus on fine, collectible pieces. Many customers and collectors alike wonder what the main differences are between our production and our custom knives. So how exactly are they similar, and in what ways are they different?
Microtech® production knives and Marfione Custom Knives® have their fair share of both similarities and differences. Read on to find out more about the materials, process, and factors that could influence your decision when choosing a knife.
Let’s start with the basics-both Microtech® and Marfione Custom Knives® are built and sharpened by hand. Nearly everything in our knife production is done in house, right down to making our proprietary screws. Our attention to detail is key, and we stand by our mission to never compromise, using only the best, most premium materials for production and custom knives. The differences between these two types of knives are not found in functionality-these knives are equally equipped and able to perform.
With that being said, Marfione Custom Knives® do tend to appeal more towards high-end collectors. Why is that? These knives are geared towards such collectors due to the high caliber of materials, execution, and production time.
Materials
Marfione Custom Knives® are created with exotic materials, such as Abalone, Ironwood, Brass, Copper, and Carbon Fiber. They are offered in a vast and diverse number of blade and handle finishes. Marfione Custom Knives® are also offered in exclusive color configurations that aren’t offered with Microtech® production knives. These stylistic choices are executed with extreme attention to detail.
Execution/Production
Marfione Custom Knives® undergo a creation process even more in-depth than that of production knives. While the finished product of both is equally capable, these knives have a significantly increased production time. Every single custom knife blade is hand-ground, which is an extremely time-consuming process. We produce several stunning blade finishes, including our gorgeous mirror-polished blades.
Care is taken to produce custom details, such as hand-hefted, contoured chassis, ringed hardware, and more. Several aspects of Marfione Custom Knives® are done entirely by hand, including our anodizing and pocket clip finishes. They also have a deep laser engraving.
Great discussion. For me if I go to the few basic ideas of collecting…it’s all really excessive. I don’t need most of the knives I collect. I enjoy and use them and they bring me joy I value that immensely at the moment. If financially or interest shift my perspective on my collection will change as well. So value is a fluid concept for me. As of this moment I own more knives than I ever have. Hope to keep em all but rarely is that a reality.

I agree with u 100% I own 3 different Stitches all different finishes and like you said I perfer quality over quantity Those knives are absolutely beautiful! I understand how u feel I bought a beautiful Lile bowie knife for a ton of $ after I ordered it I said to myself " did I just do that ?" But in the end it's whatever makes u happy 😊
I can’t justify getting the combat troodon with the hell hound blade maybe my wife will get it for me for Christmas or something but I got a standard ultratech 😅
I'm sry but I personally can't see the value in Marfione Custom knives. There's many other knives out there that I personally find to be much better looking and come in much better materials that costs much less. I can get 2 full dressed (black timascus handles with damasteel/damacore blades) Herman knives for the price of 1 Custom Marfione/Borka Stitch. Now, I could see $6k for a custom Stitch if it came with black timascus handles and a damasteel or damacore star grind blade. Not $6k for just frag milled titanium handles and a star ground mirrored M390 (actually not sure what steel is used) blade along with a DLC coating and 6 small tritium inserts. Don't get me wrong. I think all of the Marfione Customs I've seen are gorgeous, and I'd love to own one (preferably a Stitch), but I just can't see the high cost of them.
I hear that. That's why you see such a drop in price on the secondary dary market with them. The marf stitches don't pop up too often on secondary however

So if a custom is not made by the actual artist then what do they call a custom that is? Designer custom? I’m sure there has to be some out there actually made by him right? How would you even know the difference if he signs them all the same?! I’m glad you made this video I thought he made them personally..
He does not make knives himself anymore that I am aware of.
@@edged_mindsetFrom some of the behind the scenes videos art Microtech, he does more than Les Baer does on his 1911s by doing odd jobs in the shop wherever it's needed, but he doesn't build one knife from start to finish. He might do prototypes, but not ones that are sold to customers.
The finish on the scales is probably a surface grinder running around 120 grit...that's really the only way I would do it to keep the lines clean...a wire brush would wash out the lines...as far as blade finishes, I'm not sure if it's completely manual finishes like I do...maybe...would be nice to think so for the premium price tag

If you watch the video, released 3 years ago (2 years before this video), from Microtech's TH-cam page they do not hide and give the information that the Marfione customs are not made by Tony himself
It looks like he does work along side the rest of the custom shop team though. I have seen recent vids of him grinding blades.

really seams like they did the bare minimum and they left the 'going over the top' to the lowest bar of just colorful/shiny... not something worth 3x the price.
at most it's worth the extra cost of polish and fasteners, not 3x.
What I’ve learned in my 45 years of existence is that in the U.S.A marketing can be misleading. In China marketing is usually a direct lie when sold to the West. Unless
the Chinese company is reputable then it is only misleading like most. I wish we had Global marketing honesty laws, but then we all would live in a less free society even though it is more honest. It seems like the debate of free will rests on the choice to be dishonest.
After owning serveral Microtechs over the years I woudl say they had the same price to value raitio of Strider. That isn't a good thing. Their best feature in the old days was their precise machining. Any company that could do that was instantly A tier. The same sort of knife can be produced now for no more than 300 bucks. If you are a collector and enjoy looking at individual hand brush strokes on your American titanium then the value will be there. If you are a user who uses their knives and does not treat them as safe queens the value will NOT be there for you. Simple. Ever since the ZT 777 debarcle in the early 2010's I have given Microtech massive side eye. BTW those custom body scews always gave me the shits. If you have to buy proprietary bits to maintain your gear you are getting a bad bad deal. Not impressed at all.

I just started collecting about 3 years ago and in that short amount of time I have put together a nice collection of folders in my opinion. I'm fan of ZT knives. one of my grail knives is the 777 vanax and Damascus blade. I have only seen it once for sale and it was way out my league, and even if I could afford it at that time, it sold in a blink of an eye. But I was able to get the M390 version in the stonewash blade. I read about the ZT and Microtech beef a while back, one company says the other company ripped them off. I need to find that articular and read it again. What really was going on with that, if you don't mind me asking? I'm a fan of both so I want to hear this from an unbiased viewpoint. lol .
This was like when I got my 1st ZT 0562 before I ever finally got my hands on an XM-18. I know this isn't the same thing going on with zt and microtech.
It depends on what you plan on getting out of your product after you buy it. It also depends on when you buy the product. If you never carry the knife and only take it out to take photographs than it may retain most of its value. It also depends on what’s available in the market. Supply and demand have the most to do with whether or not your item is going to be worth more money than you paid for it. I believe the more customs that are made the less money they will be worth. It seems like these costumes are all over the place now. I think that drives the value down. There are other ones available somewhere else. The more that are made the lies important yours is at the end of the day. Is it truly a costume if everyone else owns one? I believe after so long it’s just day production with higher quality parts. Maybe? I believe Microtech manipulates the market. Otherwise we would have more halos available. What I mean is, why don’t they make them if they know they are in such high demand?
As for other Microtechs, Axial quality is at least, if not better than Mictotech. You pay a lot for a “brand”. This is changing rapidly in the OTF space.
Axial are ugly and boring.
What would be the maximum price that you would recommend spending on a marfione that retails for around 2 or 2.5k?
That's hard to say but I will say 1300 is a great deal on one for bnib. Now if it's a more desirable blade like bowie or interceptor and finish like mirror it will be harder to find a one at that price and you would be closer to 1500.

How do I store an otf knife for years do I have to loosen the blade so somewhere against bounce so the blade or do I have to separate the spring?
No, there is no tension on the spring in the open or closed position.
Does this apply to the folders as well?
The folders have materials that align better with the prices IMO
Do the sliders on the Marfione Customs still tear up your thumbs?

@@edged_mindset Oh, I thought you had spent like 12 13 grand on them. Because I see them going for $3500 to $4500. And you said you paid full retail for a couple of them if I am not mistaken.
@@mosab643 The base model customs are 2k retail. If they have damascus blades or Inlays they are more. I paid full retail for two, and below for the third. So around 5k for all, but I have since sold them ND recouped that money. Fun to own for a bit

@XIUXIU1313 don't get me wrong tho marfione knifes are art pieces but if I were to buy one I'm not going to just admire its beauty and let it sit around knifes are meant to be used, they are going to be with me 24/7 as a secondary weapon.
If you've got the money for these, you likely have other blades and guns. You don't buy a Ferrari as your only car.
