    WOW! Impressive! I've been off-grid van-lifer 7 month/yr, mtn biking & motorcycling, and this has got to be the cream of the crop configuration for all things Adventuring. There has been many times over the last 15 years I wanted to add a new activities (kayak and associated equip for example) but I couldn't due to storage and configuration limitations. The more I think about it, the more BRILLIANT this looks. Maybe I should tow one behind my current rig and stuff a GF ... and all her crap in there ... oops, did I just say that out loud? my bad ;)

So many RV use their kitchen sink for that and washing their hair and even bathing there dogs. It's so gross. I would rather buy a fold up basin for my pets only and one for washing my hair and doing my teeth ect. Love the van. Great job.

    I love what they did to this "disguised" cargo trailer. Only change I'd make is turning the fridge. It would look better under the upper cabinet, create more floor space, and easier to get to. Was that the carbon monoxide alarm above the entrance door? If so, it should be at ground level. I love the garage door/bed mechanical look. I wouldn't change a thing there. Over all, this is an awesome build. I'd be proud to own this.

    I have been thinking a lot on the base camp idea. The trailer I've designed for myself has much of the same features in the forward part. I'm still a bit stuck on the beds, however. I want room for 3-4 guys in separate fold up bunks. Looking at this trailer gives me some space reference. I have the same refrigerator in my current 5th wheel. P.S. I like the generator location.

  • @mikeb8342
    @mikeb8342 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Really a great build, but a few thoughts....
    I'm not sure I'd want the floor to have a step in it, but if the trailer is tall enough a raised floor across the entire unit would give all sorts of room for tanks, utilities, storage, etc.... all inside the dry, conditioned space. If a step, I'd probably have it across the entire front end vs having it angled. I'm not a natural clutz, but I can easily see tripping on it. Maybe an embedded light strip at the edge so you can never miss it?
    I think sticking with the wall AC is a better idea than switching to a mini split. Mini splits have a checkered record in non-mobile applications (so imagine bouncing down the road regularly), they are more expensive than even the roof air units and are just as difficult to get fixed (as opposed to just buying a replacement wall unit available at countless box stores).
    Just my $.05... inflation doncha know.

    • @terrafirma9328
      @terrafirma9328 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mini splits are heat pumps and 500% more efficient so they use less power and are worth it, you also save some space and can heat in the winter, so you don't need to spend extra on a heating system. I've seen prices as low as $800.

    • @mikeb8342
      @mikeb8342 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@terrafirma9328 hmm, I can't say I've ever seen an $800 mini-split... but OK, probably didn't look recently. I know from first hand experience that mini-splits can be troublesome on buildings.... I can just imagine the failure rate on a moving vehicle. I can get a small wall AC for $100 (and they seem to hold up well enough) and a diesel air heater for a couple hundred bucks (admittedly with a checkered past.... over $1K for a solid name brand one). I guess to each their own..... the freedom to try and fail (and learn from). I hope the mini-split does well in the long term.

    • @billanddeb
      @billanddeb  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You actually helped me figure out very difficult questions I was struggling with!! I wanted the lift for the bed as well and was thinking of doing 4 hydraulic shocks but found that it was very hard to push down.. this was an amazing idea no joke!! And lifting the floor for the water tanks . (I don't know why I never thought of that.. looking at your system this seems so logical now but I never came to that conclusion.. I also wanted the window airconditioner for easy in an out and replacement!!! You really did help with alot .. although on my build I wanted a full wrap around dining set under the bed that would also convert into another full size bed... And I wanted a space like your utility closet but I wanted it in the back creating a garage with just enough room to sit a bike sideways inside .. but I like how open u made this floor plan as well. You guys really did amazing... (My only peeve with your build is the kitchen is to small and doesn't have that "sway" about it) that's literally it..

Also, our 29 foot Keystone is too long for what we want to do and where we want to go now that we retired, hahahhaha. Smart build! I had a idea for your bed lift system. Instead of the 4 pins, keep going with the garage door theme and use garage door spring latches. You would need two sets, one per side obviously. The t-handle in the middle pulling the cables which in turn pulls open the latches on both ends/corners.

I was thinking of something similar with an electric winch powering it, 4 corner cables to the one drum. But I don't have the head space with a 6'6" ceiling. Really like the layout, well done!

    They did some very impressive work but I wonder how much the tongue weight is without the Trike loaded in the back? Without the counterweight if they ever decide to travel without the trike, having too much tongue weight will negatively affect the towing & handling characteristics. Ideally you want the center of gravity to be as close above the axles as possible. Me & a neighbor both had Suburbans & similarly sized campers but mine was older & much heavier. He needed a load-leveler attachment for his hitch & I didn't because even though my camper was heavier, the weight was distributed better than it was in his camper.

      This trailer was built for the purpose in mind to be able to take the trike with them when they travel. Also keep in mind, the garage torsion springs for the bed at the back add a significant amount of weight at the back to offset the weights in the front. In addition, they probably do not travel with a full tank of water either. Most any toy Hauler you see, whether DIY or commercial will have the bulk of the living quarters and (bathrooms kitchen etc) up front. But still, I'm certain that trike will always go with them.

    So the bike has to be outside when you want to use the bed?...Weird.

    One problem that would stop me from building something similar is all that weight up forward would exceed my tongue weight limitation. I would plan it so all the water and holding tanks were over the trailer axles. Otherwise, very nice, and plenty of room for solar on top.

      I'm guessing that is offset by the weight of the bike, i think it is a trike heavy

    10:38 the faux brick looks great but it'll be a pain to clean.
