This is a nice little set up. My dad’s been doing this for years as he’s a port worker here in Alaska and gets breaks for his 20 hour days. He heats his truck cab and his bed topper. Once he starts working he just starts the heater and never turns it off. These little setups are great.
Run another cheap dryer hose from the large intake into the window next to your heat in hose you will double your time per tank and heat temp will be at least 30% hotter.
I'd suggest putting my an extension for the breathing air intake, or the exhaust across to the opposite side of the vehicle. Maybe even two pipes in and out via the window card. I'm a little worried about a light breeze in the wrong direction getting that exhaust inside.
1 thing I added because I'm paranoid about not having idiesel fumes in my car when I'm sleeping is to add a cold air intake hose. You never know what way the wind is going to blow that might take those fumes and send it into the air intake. Better safe then end up with cancer down the road.
@@Gary-ee3kq Very true! If there is a consistent wind direction I always park in an orientation where the exhaust will flow away from the intake. I also have a 1.5’ extension exhaust pipe that I can put on, but the best bet would be to route the intake back into the car, either through the sunroof or plexiglass insert. My only concern is that it would get too hot!
@mitchsends I have a 5kw that I normally run at the lowest setting 1.7htz and I usually sleep in areas that are 5-20 below freezing and it hasn't got too hot. I also started to sleep with my head on the opposite side where the heater is at to reduce the noise and it also is cooler.
Great video and good idea on putting everything in the box on the roof, To bad your vehicle didn't have a sunroof then you could make a insert for all the wiring and the pipe to mount semi permanently and then you could even install a small exhaust fan to deal with the condensation problem
nice little setup, 2 tips: upgrade the fuel lines to the white nylon ones. also you can add upto 1/5th kerosene into the diesel to prevent freezing/gel, just mix well.
Amazing build! One concern - the muffler exhaust is awfully close to the air intake, which could pull exhaust fumes into your car. I believe there are small diameter metal hoses that you could attach to the output of the muffler to direct the exhaust further away from the air intake. It would also be a good idea to have a CO detector in your car at all times when using combustion devices (heater, stove, etc.) But wow, what a great idea putting it all in a hard case on the roof!
No expert, but there are videos that recommend replacing the green flexible fuse line with harder tube lines. Although the line is short so the flex might not hinder the suction.
Interesting little set up, but the case and everything was you piecing it together, or was it a kit? Also, you could, in theory, keep it inside the car when it’s really cold, so the fuel wouldn’t freeze. I guess once it’s running the thing itself gets warm enough though, right? So your hand-warmer is probably good enough.
@ that’s definitely true but if you have enough battery power, you’ll be good and I have more than a battery power to get me through one night and charge up in the morning. I have around 4kw
I’m no expert but in the days when in-car heaters were used in extreme cold winter to keep interiors warm overnight, it was reported that they caused cars to rust faster. You may want to do additional research to confirm it.
Well done! Does your diesel heater work ok at high altitudes? I like how your fuel is kept outside of your vehicle. I cut some holes in the side of my 2007 Toyota sienna minivan so I can run ducting from a heater or ac into my minivan. You can see my setup on my youtube channel. Thanks for sharing!
I love the build.. but why not just run the heater all night? it's super efficient, no condensation and completely safe to do so.. you said you xrack your windows to prevent condensation, the heater blkws dry air and would prevent condensation.
If my only complaint is the small gas tank. And I have to leave the cap for the gas loose, Or else the tank will be sucked to a small size and make a big mess possible Be very bad. From suction
"out-take"? It's an exhaust... LOL Good vid- put all that in a bigger box... You can use the same or bigger fuel tank too, and in general improve the set up as you see fit. Very cool set up!
"Outtake for hot air" just means point of exit for the hot air!! The exhaust is entirely different. Purposely designed for an Apache 3800 instead of the 4800 for the fit of the diesel tank and to reduce wind resistance. A 10L fuel tank was included in the kit but I just don't need that capacity - I would rather not carry the extra weight and just refill at a local gas station after a few nights of running the heater.
What temp does the fuel line freeze at? I had mine down in the teens and my line didn't freeze & it was encased in ice. Does the case get rid of the clicking noise. If you got space in there wrap it with microfiber cloths. It cut down the noise of mine.
@@Gary-ee3kq Not sure, I’ll have to test the freeze temp this season! I’ve started it up in -3 F with no issues. I put heat shield acoustic dampening wrap on the interior of my case to cut down the sound. It’s not too bad but you can still hear it.
Going to depend on the additives in your fuel and where you bought it… most colder states have different additives in their diesel to help prevent or delay freezing
@ I fueled up in VT so I assume there were additives. Started right up in 0° F after a low of -3° F (without the hand warmer). Need to do some more testing in colder weather!
@mitchsends same, didn't get mine wired till spring was starting.. only used down to like 10f so far lol... I should do more testing in driveway before I really need it haha. Should be below 0 tonight in Wisconsin, ill have to give it a go. Planned a short trip north tomorrow as well
@frendly777 if you can find a space that under it is free to route the exhaust & air intake. I thought about this since my heater only works on the passenger side, but I couldn't find a spot under my pickup that was free.

You could mix little bit of ati gel for diesel.
That'll fix the freezing issues. All the truck stops gas station carry it.
