Sounds like a little b.s. 8 feet of snow so far this season and you have 4" on the ground? Houghton / Hancock haven't so far. Lowest temperature I've seen is -2 in the UP. First video of yours I've seen where about are you I'm in marquette County . Just curious!

I have a friend who built a roof over large camper. Keeps the snow off in the winter and the searing sun in the summer. He put solar panels on top of the roof that he built to keep everything going with electricity. So I advise ANYONE with a camper trailer to build a roof for it... 4 poles set in concrete in the ground and a nice roof wide enough to either create a front and back overhang large enough for a porch or at least a front overhang to keep the snow and rain off. This will also keep your trailer from aging so quickly.

and if you build a roof, and add 4 walls, you don't need a camper!

    • @NH4x4Jeep
      @NH4x4Jeep 14 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

@@donsab-xz4soIf only it was that simple. We overwintered at a campground where even the roof wasn't possible. We live in New Hampshire and all of the campgrounds closed for the winter. There was a single campground of the state that was open during the winter which supplied electric and buried water lines. We were fortunate enough to be able to find a spot even there. We had to pay an electric bill, the rent for the campsite, and that 100 lb of propane every single week gets real expensive real quick! It cost less to rent a house when we finally found one to rent.
Building codes would prevent even this in so many places! Walls mean a foundation, grading/site work, driveway, framing, siding, insulation, electrical, plumbing, heating system, owning the land, permits, skilled labor, loans....If you build, it has to be done to code. Getting a loan means using skilled labor. The mortgage company lending you the money needs to ensure that if you default on the loan or something worth selling. $100k + when a used trailer might be $10-30k?
Even a MOBILE HOME easily costs $150-300k!!! Living in a mobile home means a mobile home park which means that you are subject to paying another $500 to 1,000 per month to rent the land below your mobile home. The mobile home park can evict you or raise your rent at any time without notice. No you're stuck with a 150 to $300,000 home on a piece of property that you've been evicted from. It's going to cost another 50 grand floss to move that home somewhere else. Many people have ended up just abandoning the home. Mobile home parks are being taken over by corporations which end up doing many of these nasty things to people. Read up on it It's pretty sad.
And if you question the price of $150,000 mobile home, try to get something cheaper. If you do it'll be unlivable and you'll need a construction loan on top of $150,000 loan just to make it livable. Again, mortgage companies won't lend you money if they can't evict you and sell your home to recoup what they loaned you.
With that being said, even buying a foreclosure requires having your $100,000 to $300,000 cash upfront.
Many places have banned tiny homes. Even if you can afford to build, it may take you 3 years to get a contractor who actually do the work.
Rising rent pushes many out of being able to rent the place that they're in. If you're living in a three-bedroom house and the rent has gone astronomical, at this point even moving to a single bedroom apartment for studio may be More than you could afford. Even if you could afford it, there's no place available to rent. Even if you do find somewhere that's available to rent, you will have to have perfect credit history b/c there are 10 people online to rent the same place. And good luck if you have a pet that you want to bring with you... Or if you have 4 kids going from a 3br place is a logistical nightmare. Your ex will probably call child services on you stating that you can't take care of your children. The owner of the house or apartment will probably rent to a single couple rather than trying to fit six people into a single bedroom apartment. If you are lucky enough to find somewhere, will also need first month, last month, and moving fees to cover all up front. So if you're struggling to make the rent, you probably don't have 3 months of emergency funds set aside. This is just a sad reality of the situation we all find ourselves in...
      Count your blessings every day...

Lol....memories....we lived in a 32 foot Damon Challenger for about 7 years....northern middle Tennessee - so difficult in winter, but nowhere near where you live....behind our ragged out 1983 HUD double wide (unliveable....at the time).....
    New subber....
We put a hideous winter RV skirt on every year around November....improving every year....styrofoam panels, reflectix, several layers, tons of duct and gorilla tape, then 6 mls plastic under and over all of that, with straw bales in black plastic trash bags under the outer layer of plastic.
We had a central propane unit that was so loud, but.....COLD HAS NO MERCY, so we were always grateful for warmth.....heated water hoses....
We have great compassion and support for the "unshelterd." There but by the grace of God go I......

Just found you. Truly enjoyed your video. After my own heart....I'm 67, female in Northern Michigan, my 30,000 btu the furnace which kicks a** decided after moving the camper to a different location 8 miles from the original place on Dec 21, 2024....to quit. Chose to not get enough power. From research that told me my issue is a loose negative ground. I am on SSI and SSDI, and have no family. I am the last. So if it's going to be it's up to me. My converter is working fine, cord is good, adapter to shore power new. Being I have a 2005 Coachman, same year as my F-150 both in great shape. But I haven't had heat since that date. With the exception of a radiator oil heater and a new radiant heater that is unplugged from an outside source when I'm not here, which is every other day for about 5 hours. I have cats. Means I can't see my breath in here and the cats water isn't freezing on the floor this year....Yet! But I'm going to have to pull out my converter under my stove/ oven after removing mouse hole for my shore power cord. After of course shutting all power from camper. While trying not to turn into a popsicle while I'm doing it. Is there anything else I need to know before I start this project? Cause the Lord knows I don't have money to call an RV specialist to do this. I'm living in a camper because I can't afford to rent anywhere and eat too.
    Thank you kindly.

I have two of those radiators and they work great but if on high they can trip a breaker pretty easy. Perfect for a bedroom that has a closed door because all the heat stays in. We had our first cold spell and front last night and it was warm all day with me running an overhead fan in the bedroom until about 7pm the front moved in with high winds and rain and this morning I got up at 4:30 to make coffee and check on my cats. I have one of those heaters in the hallway and a two quartz heater in the bathroom to take a little sting out of the cold that comes in due to having the vanity door open under the sink that allows the cats to go in and out when they feel like it. One cat was missing this morning which was strange because he is one of the chow hounds and is usually always indoors in the early mornings. Maybe he found a warm place when all that rain and wind hit. It was 37 in Baton Rouge this morning and I am about 35 miles west so we are usually several degrees colder. Wind chill was 20 and my 3 indoor cats are all wrapped around this heater in my bedroom. Tonight my electric blanket goes on duty for the winter, that wind is terrible and today it is not going out of the mid 40s.

We already had property with all the utilities, so we pre planned and dug dedicated water and power over from our well house, and installed underground lines for propane with a 1000 gallon tank. Did full 2x4 insulated skirting. It was still a learning experience with some miserable days (furnace quit when it was -35) but we lived. Do it again when we build our new house on the property. I use a diesel parking heater. You can get them from Vevor for around $100. It uses about a gallon of diesel per day on low and 2 to 2.5 gallons on high.
    No odor and quite.

    Hey Andy:
    Oh man, can I relate!
Regarding rhe propane, I have, (as you may remember from fighting a fire atbour property on Bonnie Lane), two RVs running on propane up here in Alba. I get my propane from Ellsworth Farmers Exchange in Antrim County, and have one 250 gallon pig for the RVs, and one 350 gallon pig for the standby generator. It is a little late this year, but Ellsworth Farmers Exchange, in August, allows one to buy propane in advanceat a reduced price.
Regarding the (POS) Suburban furnaces, I have several that may be good for parts if you are interested.
Happy New Year to you and Carlos!

Andy here is a thought for next year take and make a small room about 8x8 pick up a wood stove and set it in it of course insulate it and set it about six or seven feet off your camper pick up a pipe and run it from the room to the camper You could run it to your exhaust fan from the cook stove and put a thermostat on the fan turn it around so it is pulling air instead of pushing it make a good fire in your eight by eight room when you need the heat the fan comes on with the thermostat and heats the camper for you! I take it you have slab wood from the mill free heat instead of using propane and kerosene!

  • @TomMaterene
    @TomMaterene 14 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Advice ... bales of hay make excellent insulation for a temp barrier around the camper base. There was a guy in Pahrump Nevada that built a house using bales of hay for outer wall insulation and of course there were no inspections at that time but I can imagine it worked very well. The coldest I ever experienced was -4 in Oklahoma City and I walked to school about two blocks and always wet my hair to comb in the mornings, my ear muffs were frozen to my head by the time I walked that two blocks. That was enough cold weather for me. I had a kerosene heater just like that one, it was 35000 btu. It would heat a fifty foot trailer front to rear and I always kept a window cracked in the front room to allow fresh air in. The first few times I used it I would try to keep the flame low but found out much later it was the wrong way to use it, you must have a white bright flame to make the catalyst on top burn that carbon before it exited. That was 16 years ago and to this day I still have a dark trace at the edges of all my ceiling in this old trailer I live in, where it found an exit. At the time I was using that heater kerosene was about 5.50 a gallon and I would have to drive all over the place to find it. After the soot bath and a nasty chest cold due to the dirty air I finally figured things out and stopped using it. It was using about a gallon and a half running high for 13 hours. It would have been perfect for a hunter who wanted to heat his camp site, you could have sit it outside with a tent around it with a center vent hole and it would have been warm enough to sleep. If you ever need to replace the wick pay someone to do it, unless you don't mind lots of little holes in your hands. In Korea that is just about all they use for winter heating, small ones for bedrooms of course but they don't have natural gas.

    • @Gadgetman64

@TomMaterene be careful with hay bales keep them dry or they will compost and self combust .

THanks for your tips. I live in one of the oldest lived in houses in North Carolina. While not as cold as where you are we still suffer through frozen pipes and winter weather. The main part of the house I live in was built when the Britosh were in charge. Hard to keep warm in the winter but as you said, it is doable and always have a backup system in place just in case. Have a blessed New Year, stay safe and warm and God bless.

I used to live in Japan when my ex was stationed there and our house off base was a very thin wooden type house with tatami floors (woven grass mats, kinda). We had to use kerosene heaters to warm up the "living room" just barely fit the loveseat and box type tv. Let me tell you it about toasted is out! So we'd open a shoji doors (thin doors made of, I think, rice paper) to the "dinning room" just barely fit a 4 top table and chairs, anyway to have the dinning area warm up, too. Upstairs we only had electric blankets, that if your not careful could melt the plastic housing and almost caught fire, but they kept you warm in like 0° temps!
So while I live in a 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom apartment with central heating and cooling in Ozark, Missouri. I can remember the days of kerosene heaters and freezing my behind off!
I will pray that you and your family will someday have your house built with some creature comforts to finally enjoy. Love your videos and the occasional appearance of your lovely wife and children. Also, praying for her health. God bless. ❤

Been living in a travel trailer since 2016. Started my adventure up in the cold Northeast. I skirted, 2 100lb propane tanks, and a smaller kerosene heater, put installation bubble and foam on windows. Had backup systems when one thing failed, was ready to go at a moments notice. Put a 250 watt space heater under the trailer with a remote switch so I could toggle it to keep tanks and pipes from freezing. I had a heat gun on really cold nights, my door would freeze shut. So in the morning I had to thaw it out. Installed a regular wifi thermostat and replaced my analog controls for the roof top AC with a digital one, and tied my furnace into the thermostat. That way I could monitor the temp inside. Replaced my fridge with one from iceco, and love it, it uses 12/24 volts or AC, I run it exclusively off solar. Have 600 watts on roof, 2 deep cycle batteries, and 2 solar generators. I had fun not freezing to death up north. In 2020 I moved south to Florida, now I don't freeze but dodge hurricanes. My solar and generator keep me working pretty well, went with the starlink mini because it uses DC, and uses less power. During hurricane season my 58 gallon fresh water tank stays full, and I stock up on diesel in a tank I have in my truck so I can bug out of Florida if necessary and not have to worry about finding fuel. Going to have to replace my roof top AC soon, will probably go with a RV built mini split roof top, or just a regular mini split, and , my furnace quit working, it starts, blows, then turns off until I hit the reset button. Since I am in Florida, don't really need heat anymore, so I just use my lil buddy with a co detector to take the chill off if I need heat. I will probably replace the heater in the RV with a diesel heater. I love RV life no matter where I am, I make it work.

A friend of mine ended up having to live in a travel trailer for a year up here in the middle of Canada and he was burning through propane like mad. So I suggested that we go to the store and buy the foam with reflective foil on either side. It hasn't turned out. We found a place that was selling it at a discount because they had a batch that had gotten some damage. We were able to get 2 in foam with foil on both sides. 4 ft wide by 8 ft long and enough to cover his 40-ft long camper on the roof and the walls on the outside and cover his slide out. We did it just before a big blizzard hit taping all the seams and everything cutting out just a few windows so he had some light but covering up most windows in the sleeping area and the bathroom and we managed to be able to get him down to just one 500 gallon propane tank every month and that was here in Canada but we also supplemented with a small space heater because he did have access to grid electric. But the electric heater was mostly just for the bedroom area because it was furthest away from the furnace He was much more comfortable after we did that and he figured he probably saved a few thousand dollars by spending the money on the insulation

Your Dog will keep you both Warm and you can keep him Warm. Also you can lower your heat in the trailer by using a emergency blanket under your bottom sheet, as the emergency blanket will reflect your body heat back up towards your body. Also you could invest in sleeping bags rated for below zero temperature. Saving more on your heating bill, during the Winter.

Doing the same thing in KS. What I did was put the slide out in the bed room in, it made a big difference. Make sure that it doesn't cover the heat vents. I'll be building a high tunnel greenhouse to park mine in. Plastic cover in the winter and 50 percent shade cloth in the summer. You can get the hoop bender from bootstrap farmer. It uses chain link fence top rail for the tubing. Plus you can grow some vegetables for a big part of the year.

The DIY high tunnel video series is really good. I bought the hoop bender for the 20ft. Wide one. at that width the height should be right at ten and a half feet. But can be increased by using longer ground posts. I'm always willing to share ideas back and forth.

I filled the tank daily when I got mome from work, ran the internal heat at 50 to keep the pipes from freezing. At that time propane was pretty inexpensive.
