I see Estonia as Nordic. I live in Norway, I've visited Estonia, and it is just gorgeous. The people are western like us, they have strong ties with Finland and more. The only thing missing is the Nordic cross on their flag.
Thank you! I think so too! Historically Northern Estonia and islands (especially Saaremaa, also called Ösel, and Hiiumaa, Also called Dagö) have stronger cultural and genetic connections with our Nordic neighbors than Southern Estonia. People living in South Estonia are more likely to see themselves as Baltic and on the other hand Northern Estonians see themselves as Nordic. We have Finnic language but Nordic culture.
There was a flad same as Finlands but the blue was black instead, but in the end the corrent wan was chosen instead of the other cos of the meanings of the colors.
Well, there were those semi-large sized catamaran type ships that would cross the baltic sea to finland in less than an hour in the late 90's early 2000's, which could carry a dozen small cars, but they weren't in action for long. The traditional RoRo ferries indeed take longer than 45 minutes though.
In 1989 my parents were involved in the Balti kett (or Baltic Chain) where approximately two million people joined their hands to form a human chain spanning 675.5 kilometres (419.7 mi) across the three Baltic states
Many scholars believe that some of the Nordic/Scandinavian origin myths have to do with the meteorites that hit Saaremaa island in Estonian because they include the sun falling, darkness, and a great fire. Kaali crater lake is still considered a sacred site (hiis) to the Estonians. I think the Nordic countries accept the fact that Estonia has a Nordic past (it was once part of Sweden and Denmark) but also note was heavily influenced by other countries outside of them. If anything, Estonia and Finland should have their own social/cultural/ethnic region together, as they're more alike than say Norway is to Finland, etc. The other Baltic states are mostly ethnically Baltic and speak a Baltic language, whereas Estonia is not ethnically Baltic or speak a Baltic language. They're a Finnic people. I highly recommend reading up on Saaremaa though. Saaremaa is just absolutely gorgeous and has a pretty amazing history. It's on my bucket list - I want to spend a couple of weeks just living on the island (I'm going to making more than one trip to Estonia, that's for sure lol).
Interesting fact: as Estonia is also part of NATO, other NATO planes do occasionally training here. In the summer Spanish fighter jet "lost" a misile during excercise in Southern Estonia. Missile was never found and it is a miracle that no one got hit as there are other fighter jets in the sky not to mention several passenger airplanes.

while swinging upside down your feet are fixed to the swing. About the Baltic vs Nordic topic, we know that we are Baltic but deep inside we want to be Nordic.
By today, Estonian natives have more hereditary ties to the Nordic contries than the baltic, even our physical appearance is leaning more to nordic than slavic and our language base is nordic. We were lumped into the baltic because of our land-based connection and situation, but our DNA and culture, all though having influences from the baltic/slavic cultures, is still closer to our nordic neighbours.
The reason we feel deep inside that we should be nordic because we have such good connection with Finland. Like the video said, Finland is like our big brother who we look up to 😊 I know that Estonia is considered Baltic but in my heart i would love Estonia to be nordic
One of the key events that helped to get our independence was the Baltic Chain where lithuanians, latvians and estonians came together and formed a human hand holding chain across the three countries to show we want freedom. My dad stood in the chain with others, he said it was an extraordinary experience and they sang the most beautiful and freeing songs.
Both of my parents and all 4 of my grandparents took part in the Singing Revolution (The Singing Revolution is a commonly used name for events between 1987 and 1991 that led to the restoration of the independence of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania from the Soviet Union). My mother has told me about the Baltic Way / Baltic Chain ( also Chain of Freedom; Estonian: Balti kett; Latvian: Baltijas ceļš; Lithuanian: Baltijos kelias; Russian: Балтийский путь). EDIT: I hope I didn't make any mistakes in the (...) spots.
Hey Brian. I was still a kid, about 7 years old, at the time, but i was out there when we (the baltic countries) formed the "baltic chain" or "the baltic way" when hundreds of thousands of people joined hands and stood in a human chain spanning the baltic countries as a political protest to gain our freedom. Shortly after that we gained our independence. I remember little of it, except driving on a bus with my sister and mom, passing people who stood by the road hand in hand, miles and miles. We linked up near the capital city, a few miles out. It was pretty awe inspiring for a child, even though i didn't really understand what was going on or why.
The Nordic thing is simple. When people hear Nordic they will rather think of countries like Sweden and Finland and others, but when (personally has happened to me) you say Baltic or Eastern, people associate it with Russia. You should take a look at the country balls video about Estonian history :)
Hahaahaha!I Know!LOL😂😂 We sound Little bit like russians with Our r-prounoucing.We don't really hear it ourselfes but We sound like russians sometimes.
@@edifththth you would think so, right? But more people don't know what even Baltic means and if they do, the question I have been asked quite a few times is: *Oh, so it's like...Russia?*. I personally always say Baltic (I love the term Baltic sisters) and then explain if people don't know, but I do get why some people I know call us Nordic instead.
I actually drove the ice-road last winter :) thou they did not open the long one only short one as winter was not cold enough. And also had the luxury to be part of Baltic way (still remember that despite i was only 8 years old)
As Estonian capital is named by Danish country some half a century ago and Vikings were invincible for centuries in the Baltic Sea we have more common with Nordic then we have with Slavic or Baltic
@Random Estonian "six toes" that's what Estonians think about Latvians, right? As i have heard that Latvians think that Estonians are slow, maybe Lithuanians thinks that too, i don't know. But then Lithuanians call Latvians a horse heads. ... But then what Estonians think of Lithuanians?

We do not want to be "more like finnish". Trust me, finns are no role model for us. We just feel Norhern (not Nordic), already because of natural conditions. And we are extremely tender and touchy about us being related to Russians. Many obvious reasons there. Some have to do with identity. If you are constantly mixed up with someone else, doesn"t feel good. W are really very diffrenet from Russians. Linguistically, psychologically, socially etc etc etc
Well my mum was in Baltic way and singing revolution and in our family we always take part of song festivals, one is coming up this year ;). Also my grandfather still remebers some world war II stories and he always talks that russians and germans did same things to us only different was that germans said 'please' and 'thank you'. And like some comments said you should really watch video 'why are estonians so smart' done by our coverment.
Growing up, I never even considered that we could be anything other than Nordic. It was not something I actively thought about, it was just something I thought was a simple self-evident fact. I was surprised to learn later as an adult that some people don't view us that. Why I thought so might have something to do that we have several songs about being Nordic (none about being Baltic or something else). Our capital is literally Danish town in translation. We used to be part of Sweden and Denmark. Some of our islands and coastlines were originally inhabited by Swedes who left only in the run up to the WWII. Still at least those of us from the coasts or islands probably have some Swedes in our family histories. Our history before the northern crusade was pretty much shared. Our national epic is interlinked with the Finnish national epic. The historical pre-Christian national gods are almost the same (which is not true if you go to Latvia or Russia). Today we carry mostly Lutheran tradition. If you look at the bookshelf of any home there are probably as many Finnish and Swedish author's children's books as there are Estonian authors. There a number of other cultural icons that are shared between Finland and Estonia - Sofi Oksanen, Aino Kallas and Hella Wuolijoki are some examples, but hardly the only ones. Our economy is intertwined with Finland and Sweden. It also used to be that pretty much everyone in northern Estonia spoke also Finnish, but this unfortunately is no longer the case. Of course there is also a question what exactly do we mean by the term Nordic. The literal translation of our word for it - põhjamaa - is northern land. You may want to say it only means Northern European - but that doesn't really convey the same meaning as põhjamaa as it includes for example UK, but also Latvia and Lithuania which we haven't usually thought of as põhjamaa (and to my knowledge neither have they thought it like that). The specific word Nordic and the group of countries identified by that word is a much more recent invention than our põhjamaa word. So when I say we are part of the põhjamaa, I mean that we are part of the group of countries that happen to include us and what in English is termed Nordic countries, but the term I am using in Estonian predates the English term. It would be very inconvenient for us to suddenly start not calling ourselves põhjamaa as that would mean we have to scrap a bunch of very old and dear songs about ourselves.
But those few points kind a doesn't matter. Because You were part of Sweden because they conquered your land. They even conquered Latvia too for some time, even Danish did that. And that's why there were some Swedes or other Nordic people at Estonia. And your economy intertwines with Swedes or Finns because those are one of closest country to You and one of the riches ones. Btw i'm not saying that You are not Nordic. You are. But You are Baltic too, kind a, but mostly because of place on map and shared history, mostly bad one, and maybe becase of few other small things. So in some ways You are both ;d
3:23 its NOT ONLY your own safety. If you are not wearing reflector and some kind of driver kills you, then he/she has to live their whole life with knowledge that he/she killed a man. Even though it wasnt actually their fault it may lead to psychiatric disorders...
My grandpa was involved with the reindependencing (idk if thats right word lol, im estonian so) and he is still alive. He talks storys about it to me too, its pretty intresting.
We usually say we are northeners 'cause we're so similar to the Fins, but every time we need to act tough or joke about how we're "a part of russia" we lt out our inner slav xD
⚠ It is not how people feel that defines the status of a country, it is the culture and history that defines if it is a Nordic country and if you look at the facts then the north part (with Saremaa and Hiiumaa) is as nordic as anithing can be. We had Vikings (the oldest finds in the world too) our most known belifes named "Taara" belife is based on Thor, our region mostly Reval the corrent Tallinn was one of the most importand Nordic trading hubs, most of our history it was occupied by close to all the Nordic countries and so on.
Estonian government raised alcohol taxes a lot(especially strong alcohol like vodka, rum etc.). So now we (Estonians) and Finnish go to the Latvian border to buy some cheap alcohol from there. Shops are by the border of Latvia, and on Latvian land. Latvia has a lot lower taxes, for example 0.5L Mernaya costs at Latvia 6.5€, in Estonia 10€. Geography now video is just little bit expired.
Yes, we are more Baltic - geographically and with Latvia we share common history for centuries. We are even genetically close to Latvians. Only thing that is different from Latvia and Lithuania is language. Me, personally I do not like identifying us as Nordic people, because we are not. Yes, we have culturally lots of common things, but this is it.
Estonian here on the NORDIC topic - northern european and nordic are 2 different things. We don't have a problem being called "baltic". I think the nordic thing is kinda like the mentality of wanting to sit at the "cool kids" table (even though Latvia and Lithuania are cool kids too! ❤). It is also fueled by the fact that we ARE "northern european" country as classified by the UN and our relation to finns. What we don't like is being called "eastern european" country due to being occupied by the USSR.
Nice to see your reaction :D Nice to see our country being showed to other people! :) Today most of estonians have close relatives who took presents in that Song Festival that won our indepentence, so most of us can relate to that and we are proud of i! :) Second we are nordic cause of our language as we are one of the last communities who speak it as nationality :( It is has a long history but we need it :) We don't want to be assumed russians :) We have the life values of nortic countries and trying to have them, but as we have been independent so little time it takes some more time :) Also we have viking heritage so there is that also :D

Some people also find it interesting that there are courier robots in Estonia: Check out @sotsmees’s Tweet: twitter.com/sotsmees/status/1074312829921095680?s=09
We are used to call our country as põhjamaa what means Nordic land. Also we just relate more to Nordic countries than Baltic ones. Our language is more Nordic, our traditions and so on. I personally don't really care about that Baltic Nordic thing but I will still say that Estonia is põhjamaa haha.
Oh and yeah....let's just say that when your whole family tree is like "Ära sa mitte mõtlegi mõne välismaalasega käia! Eesti poisid on väga kenad." (Trans: Don't you dare to date with an foreigner! Estonian boys are very nice!) Then you can pretty much already imagine them singing for Estonia.
Yeah, it's a slight misconception, that only singing brought us indipendence. Gathering to song festivals to sing patriotic songs was a mean of peaceful protest. As singing ethnically patriotic songs was prohibited, it was still a ballsy move. The term "singing revolution" slightly downgrades the effort and contribution of our politicians pressuring Kremlin to give us more and more economic and cultural freedom. One of the best examples of that was getting Gorbachev to agree in mid 80's with the program called "isemajandav Eesti" or shortly "IME" which basically meant self-governing Estonia (a symbolyc word, as "ime" translates into English as "miracle"), which gave Estonia more autonomy. Geographically, Estonia is Baltic, yes, but linguistically and ethnically, the Estonians are Finno-Ugric and the language is quite similare to Finnish and differs a lot from the Baltic Lithuanian and Latvian. Still, I should add, that we have coexisted side by side with Latvians and Lithuanians for so many centuries, that as people, there are only a few differences between us.
The video is a bit outdated now about the "free wifi in the forest" thing. It was an ambitious idea that didn't work out. Estonia now has free wifi in malls and cafes and thats pretty much it. Helsinki has a city center wide free wifi that actually works pretty well, and its better than anything we have.
@@Aurinkohelmi I mean helsinki center. There's great wifi there. We dont have such a quality connection over a wide range anywhere in estonia, let alone in forests.
For the border with Russia. Yes, I just imagined, say, a mexican crossing the border without a visa stopped to pee, and the american border guard told him - of course bro, take your time, I'm not rushing you. And really? Forbidden songs? There was no song and dance festival in Estonia only in 1943. Because hello, the second world war. Since then, this festival was held regularly. Like every 5 years regularly. And yes, with Finland, we are not cute together. In fact, we don't like each other that much. Finns think that we complain too much, and we think that they drink too much.
I see Estonia as Nordic. I live in Norway, I've visited Estonia, and it is just gorgeous. The people are western like us, they have strong ties with Finland and more. The only thing missing is the Nordic cross on their flag.

Now you totally have to do same for Finland as well!
Thank you for doing this video because im estonian

Have you reacted to tujurikkuja? If not you gotta
Hi Brian i am from Estonia and i live Tallinn. = Tere Brain ma olen pärit Eesits ja elan Tallinnas.
I helped you learn Estonian:DD
Estonia has 2222 islands
Well.... I don't know But my parents WERE alive at the time of the singing revolustion
❤
There is so many things what "Geography now" dont talk.
Hello!I am Estonian And I Want To Say A Famous ( in Estonia) Writter Made A Movie Named "Seltsimees laps" And In The Movie A Stranger Comes In Do The House And Almost Kidnapps The Writter (he had to live trhu the soviet union)

Yes, I wanted also to recommend that movie - it explains a lot about the history of Estonia and the power of singing tradition:) But take napkins with you ;)

Now I know more about estonia (I'm from estonia)
Estonia is the Baltic state as well as Sweden, Germany and Poland, but only in Latvia and Lithuania speak the baltic language.
Baltic states means only Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. It doesn't mean every country around the Baltic Sea.

2:45 my grandmother lives at saatse village
Finally
In Estonia is 54 cities/towns . Smalest is Kilingi -Nõmme 810 population.
And Brian I live in Kuressaare that is town and a municipality on Saaremaa island

Lol . My grandma lives in saatse😂
Haha im estonian and my grandfather and grandmother had to sing aswell if u ever have any questions then u can type to me.
Hey Brian! look up Baltic chain!
Nobody comes to Estonia anymore to buy alcohol :D
basically hotmail(a.k.a outlook today) before was develop by estonian and unfortunately windows bought it along with skype.
Nice
The video is a bit outdated now about the "free wifi in the forest" thing. It was an ambitious idea that didn't work out. Estonia now has free wifi in malls and cafes and thats pretty much it. Helsinki has a city center wide free wifi that actually works pretty well, and its better than anything we have.
I didn´t even know that about Helsinki and I live in Espoo ;)
@@Aurinkohelmi I mean helsinki center. There's great wifi there. We dont have such a quality connection over a wide range anywhere in estonia, let alone in forests.
@@AIAllar Yeah, I get that was what you meant. Just saying that I didn´t know that one. Always used just mobile-data in Helsinki centrum also :)
I am from Estonia I can say everything I live in viljandi
For the border with Russia. Yes, I just imagined, say, a mexican crossing the border without a visa stopped to pee, and the american border guard told him - of course bro, take your time, I'm not rushing you.
And really? Forbidden songs? There was no song and dance festival in Estonia only in 1943. Because hello, the second world war. Since then, this festival was held regularly. Like every 5 years regularly.
And yes, with Finland, we are not cute together. In fact, we don't like each other that much. Finns think that we complain too much, and we think that they drink too much.
