The population of Estonia has grown in the last 5 years as Estonia catches up with other Nordic countries economically. 1991 After the Soviet era, wages in Estonia were 7 times lower than in Finland. 2020- 2 times lower. In the last 3 years, more Estonians have returned from Finland than left. This confirms the fact that economic prosperity was the main reason.

Personally, I work in Finland no longer for a salary. I have accumulated more pensions in Finland than in Estonia and I can only choose one country from which I will receive support in the future. Otherwise I would no longer mind working in Estonia. The pay gap is narrowing every year.

About the Wife-carrying contests: it's a Finnish tradition but lot of Estonians take part. It's an obstacle course where a man has to carry a woman (nowadays it doesn't need to be his wife, it can be any woman) and the winner wins the weight of the woman he carried in beer. So there's the dilema: do you choose a woman who doesn't weight much so she's easier to carry and easier to win the race or do you choose a heavier woman for the chance to win more beer?

The population decline is mostly Soviet occupation era illegal Russian immigrants returning to Russia in the early 1990s, so not that much of a loss.

Tying this in with your Eurovision reactions... Following the collapse of the Soviet Union and the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, former Soviet countries slowly began to enter the competition. Estonia was the very first of these countries to win the contest in 2001. The President at the time said that winning the contest cemented their place as part of the modern Europe and helped in gaining their admission to the EU (European Union) in 2003. For me, personally that is one of the best things about Eurovision. A country with a population of just 1.3 million is unlikely ever to win the World Cup, or to top the medals table at the Olympics, but at Eurovision they can take on their bigger neighbors and comfortably win :) PS i learned a lot from this video, thank you!

People don't leave, it is more because of birth rate. Few childrens born every year etc.
And with marriage, estonians just mostly be in so called " free-marriage" wherr they live together etc, have mostly same things like marriage but with out the church stuff.

Estonians usually leave Estonia for various reasons: work, study or love. The salaries are not as high as in other European countries and they move somewhere else. for example, Finland is better off than Estonia, also the language is similar and that's the reason of around 100 000 Estonians living in Finland. The population being 1.3 million is not only due to Estonians leaving Estonia. But also because of the number of deaths is higher than the number of births. Especially low was the in the years after the reindependence of Estonia in 1991. Estonia is still recovering from that. In addition, if you look at the life expectancy there is a big gap between women and men.
Estonia is partially considered Nordic country because how developed the country itself is compared to the rest of the Baltic countries (Latvia and Lithuania).

The marriage thing is pretty much the same as being married. The only things that it's missing is a wedding and a wedding ring. I think people don't want to marry because they don't feel like it's important or they just don't want to waste a lot of money for the wedding and the wedding ring. Also I'm pretty sure that nobody wants to deal with a divorce either.

Blood sousage is very straight translation... From school I remember that English teacher used to say that "verivorst" is black budding not blood sousage 😅 and oh yea I love potatoes too... NB I am allso Estonian 😁

That is very true that we are not very religious people... I mean we don't waste time on religion but we waste it on developing Skype, training for Olympics and allso training in some motorsports so that what ever major sport people around the world look at we probably allready have some medals from these sports 😅 only 1,3 million people but you can still see us everywhere 😁 just keep your eyes open for this tiny little flag 🇪🇪 and you might be surprised how often it occurs everywhere 😁

Yeah, but I don't really like the way Geography Now! represented my country - as an ugly retarded twin?! Why Estonia gets to be the pretty one? And he's quite bias towards Finland and Estonia because he's been to those countries (and I can only guess who paid for his trip), so all this info on his channel is quite subjective and I don't like that.

@@baktom you just jelous. Compare Estonia and Lithuania, then you see why you guys are creepy twins with Latvia and we are the nerdy yet attractive girl

I have absolutely nothing to be jealous about. I still don't get why Estonia is pretty nerd - all this comparison seems to be quite stupid to me.
