That's a 16th century myth, also according to that story the Croatian king defeated the Venetian doge 3 times earning him his freedom and control over some Dalmatian cities and islands.

I am Croatian and I can just say that I am proud of that. Our state is very beautiful country with rich history. We like to mention that we are sport nation. We have a lot of great talents in so many sports because of our warrior mentality wich was proven through our history. Napoleon Bonaparte once said: "Give me 40.000 Croats and I will conquer the world". Football is more than sport for us. Croatian national football team won second place on last World cup in 2018. There was more than 500.000 people in capital city on celebration of teams home arrival (just to mention that our total population is about 4.300.000 people). We have so many beautiful places like national parks, history monuments and old cities, more than 1200 islands, more than 30 rivers and so on. Come and visit us, feel friendship, feel beauty of nature, history and people... cheers from Croatia

There's a theory that the Italians kidnapped the Croatian king at the time and challenged him to a chess battle, if we won he would get to go home, if he wouldn't, he would be killed. He ended up winning and got to go home and so the checker pattern stays on our coat of arms.

I'm Croatian amd in the part of the country I live, there are like a LOT of little neighbourhoods an places, and my normal day there would be seeing tracktors, beer, that HARD balkan music, 13 year olds smoking, babies cussing... It's sooooo nice😃🔫

The thing in the middle off the flag, it's the checker pattern because:
There was 2 kings fighting over some land, then they agreed to a chess match, whoever won got the peice of land..
The Croatian king won and that is why we use a checker pattern on our flag.

Actually, croatian coat of arms is related somewhat to chess. "šahovnica" translated is a chessboard. There's a legend how croatian prince Stjepan Držislav was captured in one of the wars against Venice. Doge of Venice, Peter II. Orsolo heard that prince is very good in chess. So he suggested a bet- they will play three rounds of chess, if prince wins, he will be released. Prince Stjepan Držislav won all of them and he returned to Principality of Croatia and put chess board on his coat of arms.
About the Croatian Regions that he talked about, i can tell you: Split has the mountains on the coast and it gets like Dubrovnik very hot in sommer. I really love the Dalmatinan People. Dubrovnik has a great trading history simular to venice in the middle ages. In Istria the climate is milder and their are also Italiens Living there. In Pula you can find a beautiful coluseum. Rovinj is a beautiful city to. Croatia also has a lot of Islands. One of them is formed like a heard. Then there is Zagreb, the kapital City were a lot of people go to work. Sady Zagreb had to suffer though multiple heavy earthquakes in 2021. But its beautiful nevertheless. Croatia was under austrian Habsburg Regime for long time. Thats why the architecture in the main platz in Zagreb will remain you in australien architecture. I cant wait to go to croatia again☺️

In some storys a croatian king was captured, not sure what king but the enemy king liked to play chess, he heard that croatian king was a good chess players. To be short the number of squares in the shield is the number of wins croaian king won in a row to be set free.

those small islands and weird border shapes happened because river Danube changes it's flow, so Croatia and Serbia cannot agree on exact border, practically Danube river is taken as border, but officially it is not the border due to constant changes. So nobody is allowed to claim anything there
