Traditional song- "Ogi No Mato" it's a story about a woman who, in the middle of a sea battle holds aloft a fan and dares the Samurai on the other side to hit the fan with an arrow.
I didn't realize it for a few years, but I'd actually bought a traditional Japanese music RECORD back in high school and it had this song on it. I think I was listening to this one day and it struck me that maybe I'd heard it before. LOL! I thought nobody else will make this connection!
In Blade Runner, I always thought this woman's singing lent such an eerie spookiness to the scenes. But I just assumed it was random nonsense that Ridley had some actress record for the movie. One day, over a decade later, I walked into some store and randomly bought some CD of traditional Japanese songs and was amazed when I got home and found this song was the first song on it.
i love the homage to this in cyberpunk 2077. before the oda fight Hankao oda will sing a simmiler song from the top of a crazy hover castle/float. as you walk threw the shadows of a ruined building the arosaka ninja oda appears and attacks. its one of the coolest scenes in cyberpunk.
I know that in the film it is somewhat tied to the Blimp scene, and during the Bradbury, but, the song/ad is really more famous for the billboard in the background that coincides with the blimp ad about offworld colonies. Thank you for uploading this source material!!!
If anyone has incorporated this into a Blade Runner ambient remix, PLEASE PM me the link !! I have a lot with the offworld colony remix, but frankly want both in there. Thank you!
Can someone explain why they used this in blade runner and Southpark? I get the reference to bladerunner but the 1st lvl of simulacra is what I'm not understanding
In the 1980s the Japanese economy was expanding and buying up western real estate at a tremendous rate. It was expected that Japanese corporations would overtake much of the West in the near future if the trend continued and this was depicted in a lot of the science fiction writing of the period. Of course, the financial bubble popped and the good times ended.
There is a poetic connection. The poem is about a samauri warrior, trying to hit a paper fan with an arrow (partially). The fan, however, is tied to a moving boat. The sea is rough and the samauri's horse is rocked by incoming waves as he takes aim. The wind is fierce. He hits the fan. The poem is about the human condition - what we all face in life. Decker is like the samauri, facing incredible distractions, but he has that same focus, the same drive to succeed as the samauri. There is something eternal in people, same through centuries, through all cultures. Courage, focus, dedication to the craft. That is why he was brought back from retirement.
I’m pretty sure this isn’t actually by Vangelis. I believe I read in Future Noir or elsewhere of the actual original song and have found it in TH-cam, but unfortunately I don’t remember the name
From “the tale of the Heike(Heike Monogatari)” made in Kamakura era, 13th century . This song is the scene about Nasuno Yoichi, the archery master tries to shoot through the fan(Ougi) ,about 230 feet away standing in the sea. the lyrics ; The sun is setting On Yashima seashore Riding on the horse quickly and running into the sea (but) because the wind blowing through the sea is so strong and the wave uprush is high, The horse can’t stand firmly (Also) the fan target is spinning by the wind No way to aim at the target

Ridley Scott was so far ahead of his time it took the rest of us 40 years to catch up.

From “the tale of the Heike(Heike Monogatari)” made in Kamakura era,

This song is the scene about Nasuno Yoichi, the archery master tries to shoot through the fan(Ougi) ,about 230 feet away standing in the sea.
the lyrics ;
The sun is setting
On Yashima seashore
Riding on the horse quickly and running into the sea

No way to aim at the target
