Why is South Africa such a strong supporter of Russia?

  • South Africa has claimed a policy of so-called non-alignment over the war in Ukraine. But at the same time, some have suggested that in reality, it takes the side of Moscow and Vladimir Putin.
So why would South Africa back Russia?

Because America is an extension of the UK. South Africa, and any other country, should be concerned about its own interest and act in that regard. South Africa and the rest of the world has seen and understood the double standard of the west. Times are charging all around us, still the west still herself as the yard stick for the rest of the world. We all understand the reasons behind the Ukrainian crisis. Proxy war to me is a lazy man's war. That's what the west are currently doing in Ukraine. South Africa should remain strong and do what is right for the country. As an African, I still do remember those that rapped the continent. I still remember those that enslaved my people in the past, and, are still stealing my continent resources. As long as we remember the past, our heads will remain with us. We know who our friends are.

@@nguboyengwekaluvuyo6219 Denmark, for eg, is one of the strongest supporters of NEPAD, and has given South Africa literally billions of dollars. They're also in an energy partnership with us, and donate substantially to programmes aimed at rebuilding our energy infrastructure. Sweden was the only Western country to officially support the anti-Apartheid movement, in the face of strong opposition from the US and UK. They supplied over $500 million in the 1970s to the Frontline states, and set up a fund for legal defense in South Africa for freedom fighters in custody of the Apartheid government. They also began a boycott on South African goods in the 1960s already. It supports NEPAD, as does Finland, who also sends us aid. These are small countries, and their contributions to Africa are a significant percentage of their GDP.
Ireland, despite being relatively poor, has consistently provided us with development aid, including participation in the Fast Track Agriculture Programme since 1994. They hosted Kader Asmal and other ANC cadres in exile, and the Irish Anti-Apartheid Movement was influential and loud. Also, IRA and ANC fighters trained together, on occasion. Nelson Mandela was granted the Freedom of Dublin before his release from prison.
This is only a small selection of what they've done and continue to do for us. They've all suffered from colonialism and imperialism in their past (Ireland's suffering was particularly brutal), which probably explains their compassion. All of them have given us more help than Russia has in the past three decades.

Read what Boris Yeltsin had to say about the Soviet Union in Cuba and Africa and dumped them. The ANC was being bankrolled by the US and supported by the people in the US. President Regean tried to sell the apartheid government ten billion dollars worth of arms and a black man name Eric Gray was the speaker of the house passed a law stopping this sale. This bill placed sanction, on the apartheid government and the next week EU did the same thing. EU nor the US offer any real asset that SA can't get from the BRICS +. SA needs to take back their land and allow China to train the people in those areas that take advantage of their resources. I suspect if SA moved in that way, the EU/US would beg to stay. The point is Africa has the leverage not the EU/US. First, by 2025 will the US be having guts and financial means to scrap the AGOA? The dollar is dying a faster than anticipated death. If those 20 plus countries join the BRICS and the new currency gets launched, then why should South Africa worry about AGOA?

LGBTQ champion Emmanuel Macron who's been breaking eyes, knees, and ankles of gilets jaunes " Yellow vests" just because they are demonstrating? And what did he just do with protesters fighting against his retirement law he unconstitutionally pushed through?
Or democracy is the US, a country that is built in genocide and slavery, where blacks still have no rights?
I gotta tell you some: you're living 40 years back. Embrace the reality of multilatralism because the trend won't stop. Ukraine war is the beginning of US downfall, dedollarization will accelerate, and China centric multilatralism is here to stay.

What SA is doing is what it would be doing if there was no war. Its business as usual. SA has had military drills with the US before it did with China and Russia. This was in the works before the war started. To stop what you have planned with Russia before the war would mean you are not exactly neutral but sanctioning Russia in a way. I believe if Ukraine wanted to do something with SA then SA would proceed with that if it benefited both parties, its just that there relationship is limited so it obscures how neutral SA is

I must say Rasool for an ANC veteran was a huge disappointment on this one... The west might be the biggest contributor investment-wise but its a known fact that the west is in a position it finds itself in economically due to Africa's and South Africa's mineral resources. This is exactly why South Africa will never have a non-black president... I mean even with our spineless Cyril Ramaphosa as a president at least he still supports Russia to a certain extent. Why has Netanyaru, George Bush, Tony Blair, Obama and more leaders even the apartheid leaders never been issued with warrants of arrests for their crimes against humanity? The west can't look to any country as not being moral compasses for it is no moral compass at all.

The title screams, "people are destitute of history" or "they have a short memory". America was busy propping up an apartheid regime in South Africa until 1988. Russia had been helping to bring down the apartheid regime and assisted ANC in doing so. It is a puzzle that the same America seeks and expects favor against Russia from South Africa. Betrayal is inexcusable, although it is fashionable at Fogey Bottom.

On 16 December 1966, United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2202 A (XXI) identified apartheid as a "crime against humanity". The Apartheid Convention, as it came to be known, was adopted by the General Assembly on 30 November 1973 with 91 member states voting in favour, four against (Portugal, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States) and 26 abstentions. The convention came into force on 18 July 1976.
