While I acknowledge Mr Galeotti's expertise on Russian matters, I think there is also a tendency that he "understands" the Kremlin a bit too well. Example: Russia can attempt assassinations in Ukraine, but if Ukraine does the same in Russia - Europe will be the ones paying as Russia punished the West. While that MIGHT be true, Galeotti fails to mention how utterly unacceptable such logic should be to the West. One almost gets the sense that Mr Galeotti would prefer if the West would put pressure on Ukraine not to launch hybrid attacks on Russia. Hopefully I got the completely wrong idea here...

Since the start of the war the Russian population as a whole has viewed the entire topic of Ukrainian resistance and retaliation following the invasion with utter incredulity, and incomprehension. It is as if you kindly helped a frail old lady across a busy street and on reaching the other side she suddenly swings a concealed machete at you. How can this happen in any world, especially in Russky Mir?

Well, Mark, Russian military forces seem to be already having a bad time of it right now! He has the people to feed the meat grinder but has he the tanks, missiles, missile defence systens, etc? He seems to be relying on suicidal assaults using golf buggies and motorbikes. As to what the Kremlin says about the car bombing in Moscow, I would take any pronouncements by the Kremlin with a huge lump of salt. Incidentally, have you been in Russia recently? It doesn't sound like it!

When the aggressive party makes such attacks you call those attacks terrorist attacks, when it is the other party, you call those tactics guerrilla warfare. It also depends on if you win or lose the war overall. The victors write the history of a war. Imagine the written history of WWI if Germany actually somehow won. I do not see Russia writing the history of this war, or anything else for a while after this war.

On a couple of points, I disagree with Mr. Galeotti. I think Ukraine may yet liberate Crimea. The attacks on the Russian airbases in Crimea, the disruption of logistics, and sabotage of their military assets, could make it untenable for Russia. But, it won't happen overnight.
The other is that targeted sabotage and assassinations inside Russia, may backfire on Ukraine, as the Russians then direct similar operations in Europe. This smacks of escalation management. Russia has been attacking Europe, on all fronts, both cyber and kinetic, long before the full scale invasion started.
The more visible the Ukrainian attacks inside Russia, the more that citizens realize their men will either not return, or return severely disabled, the more the economy crumbles, and buying power lessens, then the more real the war becomes at home.
However, Putin and the citizenry have the mindset that all neighboring countries are within the Russian sphere of influence, and are therefore Russian protectorates. Those so-called protectorates have no right to resist Russia, or disobey. So Putin believes he has the right to do with them as he will. That's one reason he invaded Ukraine so arrogantly. He mistakenly thought it was his right.
