"You want to be as prepared as you can for anything" No amount of preparation can save you from the ultimate streak ender: Rhydon with Quick Claw and Horn Drill.
Fun facts about gen III's Battle Frontier in my research: The IVs of the opponent's in the Battle Factory are taken from what streak you are on in the Battle Tower. You can reset this at any time if you just back out from all streaks in the Battle Tower. Pokemon that you encounter can be shiny, I was a 9 year old boy when I saw shiny Ekans in the Battle Palace. All of the Battle Dome IVs are at 0 due to a bug. You will always be healed if you enter a door with a "wave of nostalgia" description and your Pokemon are all under a status effect. May also work for Pokemon below 50% HP. Pickup works in the Battle Pyramid and adds to your bag. Speaking of the Battle Pyramid, there is a chance you can get Sacred Ash in the Pyramid. You cannot use it in battles, so do not save those up for Brandon. All IVs increase by 3 in the Battle Frontier every round roughly, with some trainers having that increase as the last battle of your 7 streak. Silver Frontier bosses/brains always have 15 IVs in each stat, Gold will always have 31. Unlike gen IV's Battle Frontier, bosses/brains will always start with one specific Pokemon. If you use BP to get EV increasing items, my path for the Frontier is this: Battle Factory to learn all of the sets you can go against -> Battle Dome due to ease -> Battle Pyramid once you have enough for a Choice Band -> Battle Pike -> Arena -> Palace -> Tower Doing this you will reliably be ready for anything that the Frontier throws your way.
If you use John’s team you should do the palace last cuz some moves won’t benefit your pokes so they are deleted. These moves are also move you can’t get back

John, you're quickly becoming my favorite Pokemon content creator. I love seeing you tackle the challenges I could have only ever dreamed of as a kid. I literally maxed out my clock in Emerald at 999:59 trying to beat the Battle Frontier as an 11-12 year old, but the best I could do was three silver symbols and one gold, from the Battle Pike. Watching you accomplish this was an emotional experience for me. You make me want to fire up my old copy, which had its battery run dry and made time-based events impossible, and give this another go.
I remember going into the battle palace with a Wailord who knew Surf, Ice Beam, Double Team and Substitute and had Leftovers as its held item on my first playthrough of Emerald as a kid and apparently it loved spamming both Double Team and Substitute. The battles took literally forever. I'm assumming it mostly won through PP stalling because struggle did less damage than leftovers would heal.
- Excarion 17:04:49 and the TAS by GodessMaria is about 9 hours (could be shorter but it continues from the any% glitchless TAS so it has to backtrack for the Battle Frontier prep work instead of doing that simultaneously during the story playthrough.)
The battle tower was one of my favorite addition in older gen games. One of my favorite thing to do was double battles with rented pokemon. That always tested my ability to use two essentially random pokemon together as effectively as possible. I think a video on this could be very cool!
Been playing since it came out and I'm still trying to do this. The battle frontier, PWT and the white tree hollow/black city were amazing post game add ons and it's why they are my favorite mainline games.
I did this with Ninetails, Salamence, and Ludicolo. When I got to the Battle Palace, Ludicolo's nature didnt allow it to use its strategy, so I caught a Regice to defeat that facility. I wish they'd bring this back. Raising a team to take on the toughest pokemon challenge is very satisfying.
The Battle Frontier is the big reason why I think Emerald is the best main series Pokemon game! I've spent hours, days, long periods of time in the battle frontier doing all of the different options, which were always really fun, if luck based sometimes!

Not just a great video, but also a really useful one for anyone revisiting this game and deciding to challenge the Battle Frontier! I want to throw in my tangent about the idea of a Battle Frontier in future games to any and all people who are bitter about ORAS or generally hoping we would some day get another Frontier: 1. the only times GF had an abundance of extra development time to spend on implementing an entire Battle Frontier as a hefty post-game activity, was in games that were basically just polished versions of already final products, ie Emerald being an enhanced RS, and Platinum being an enhanced DP. Every other game, whether main games of a new generation, or remakes that require updating the entire game, which even if it's a lot of copy/paste, is still a ton of work, both are projects that inherently don't have the amount of extra resources that a Frontier would require. 2. the main games have been getting more and more numerous in number of features as well as more sophisticated in graphics and mechanics, which essentially means that by todays standards, even when they do have a project that is basically an enhanced version (aka USUM), there is just so many other things they can spend the extra development time on, or even just on polishing any number of minor things overall, that a Battle Frontier never shows up early enough on their "checklists" of things to add to still have enough resources left for it. My implication with this is basically, that even if they were to add a Battle Frontier in a future game, it'd likely be less "wholesome" and end up being too lackluster or rushed, making the minority of players that actively want to see one just even more disappointed. The solution I see to all of this, is if instead of asking for a Battle Frontier as a post-game feature, people started asking for a standalone Battle Frontier game. An individual game that is compatible with the main series, just like Stadium, Colosseum/XD, PBR. Being a separate game would mean that it is the focus of the project, and could even add features that sometimes feel lackluster in the main series, like trainer customization,...and more importantly, with the change to a limited-Dex philosophy for the main games from now on, since this game would be entirely about battles in an arbitrary unique location unrelated to any specific region or theme, it could allow for every single PKMN to be playable in it. tl;dr: we don't need a postgame with a BF, we need a BF-like Stadium/PBR game that is tailored for the competitive portion of the players.
It sounds frustrating to actually do, but I really like the concept behind the Battle Palace. You just have to trust your Pokémon (and RNG) to do what will lead them to victory. Plus it can lead to dramatic moments like your final battle with Spencer.
Damn this brings nostalgia. While Emerald is my most played Pokémon game of all time, I never actually managed to get more than 2-3 silver ones. I was a kid, didnt know about EV training, leveled most of my mons by glitching rare candies and just didn't have move sets that complimented stats. Would be curious to try this out with today's knowledge.
Just wanted to mention that Shedinja can appear in the battle dome. This can be dangerous and it is good to have at least one attack that can deal with it. I had shadow ball on my metagross for it and other ghosts. I was never able to get all gold symbols, but I got all of the silver ones. The battle factory was the tricky one for the gold, in my opinion. That is the one that made me give up. I did enjoy the challenge though. For the fronteir I had Salamence, Metagross, Latios, Tyranitar and Latias. I don't remember the movesets, but Salamence had dragon dance and EQ and Arial Ace, Metagross was probably banded as well or had leftovers, and Latios had Calm Mind + psychic and coverage moves. I think its also good to use a mix of physical and special attackers and ones that cover weaknesses. I didn't use Tyranitar mucho because of sand stream. And sometimes I would use both Lati@s plus either metagross or salamence but found the other team to be more well rounded. Metagross and Salamence are both really strong.
I think it’s actually easier to do the Battle Dome before the Battle Tower because the IV’s of the opponent Pokémon in the Battle Dome are based on your consecutive win progress in the Battle Tower.
I’ve always had more success running the battle factory at level 50 just cause you don’t have to worry about your opponent having tier 3/final evolution mons and less move variety so you don’t have as many variables to worry about
After all these years thanks to you i just now realise soul dew doesn't work in battle frontier, i remember i was shocked how all these random pokemon were able to survive lati's attacks. It never occured to me the item doesn't do anything, but this explains everything
If anyone ever tries this don’t do the battle tower first like he does. The IVs of every Pokémon in certain battle areas become 31. Which iirc is why the battle Factory is so brutally difficult
Never played it as a kid becuase i went to battle frontier not really knowing how to competive battle but now years later knowing general ideas its fun

Emerald's Battle Frontier is the best thing that has ever happened in Pokemon games to date in my opinion. Most entertaining facility: Definitely the Battle Dome followed by the Battle Arena, Most difficult: I would say the Battle Factory (Gold) and maybe also the Battle Tower (Gold) and Battle Pike (Gold) Easiest: Battle Pyramid (Gold) followed by Battle Dome (Gold). I have personally completed on 6/7 of the golds on my childhood days' Emerald original save file, missing only the Battle Tower, but unfortunately the save file is now corrupt, so never got a chance to say hello to Anabel again and add the final star to my trainer card, but what can you do. Johnstone, you inspired me to take on this challenge... But I regret it now 😔 BUT that doesn’t mean I’m giving up, even if the reward is DEFINITELY NOT WORTH IT, I want to be one of those people who conquered the Battle Frontier. I have the Golds for the Palace and Factory, but the Arena and Tower are the two hardest ones left. I’m saving the easier ones for last just so I can have a nice time through it. I’ll post updates as time goes on! Edit: Arena is secure, Tower is the last difficult one now, but I’m playing through Ruby again to get a better Latios with better IVs EDIT: I’ve completed the Arena and Pyramid, but I’m currently stuck in the Battle Tower. I also realized too late that in Ruby and Sapphire’s roaming Eon Pokémon have glitched IVs. So I played through all of Ruby not knowing that until now. I want to complete the Tower before the Pike and Dome just so I can have a fun time through them. This Tower facility is complete BS with the teams they throw at me. It’s literally up to luck even with looking at the potential move sets because for example they could have a Starmie, but it could be one of 8 different Starmies that’s either a stalling wall, or an offensive one. It’s impossible to tell. EDIT: I’ve gotten all the Gold Symbols. I regret this challenge
My favorite battle frontier is easily hg/ss, the modes were fun especially dahlia’s facility. I was really bummed out that in gen 6 we ended up with some knock off battle tower, even in the gen 3 remakes. Welcome to Hoenn.

welcome to gamefreak
Yo dem's some rare ass berries tho.
I'm here seething internally because I had Pokemon Emerald when I just started high school and barely knew about Pokemon besides the anime. Needless to say, the Battle Frontier kicked my ass... A LOT. Basically, it forced me to _git gud_.
I grinded the Elite Four a lot to get the Pokemon I wanted to level 100, because I thought the Level 50 format sucked. And yeah... I also completely lucked out at the Battle Palace, because I knew jack about natures at the time. Hate that facility.
When I finally got all seven gold symbols, and saved for the last time, I still remember that gameplay time as if it were yesterday... *398 hours, 17 minutes.*
Oof
I currently have more than 450 hours and only have like 4 symbols lol
Lol All Scrubs I have over 900 Hours on Ultra Moon.
How many battle points did you earn?
4:46 Remember that Emerald came before the special/physical split. This is why Alakazam has the punches, as ice, electric and fire are all considered special types. Same reason why Entei runs Calm Mind.
I think he knows, but the lack of Psychic is a huge waste of power
Same reason why latios has dragon claw and metagross has shadow ball
Ijneb1248 shadow ball was physical in gen 3

Fun facts about gen III's Battle Frontier in my research:
The IVs of the opponent's in the Battle Factory are taken from what streak you are on in the Battle Tower.
If you use BP to get EV increasing items, my path for the Frontier is this:
Battle Factory to learn all of the sets you can go against -> Battle Dome due to ease -> Battle Pyramid once you have enough for a Choice Band -> Battle Pike -> Arena -> Palace -> Tower
Doing this you will reliably be ready for anything that the Frontier throws your way.
If you use John’s team you should do the palace last cuz some moves won’t benefit your pokes so they are deleted. These moves are also move you can’t get back
I have never even got a silver symbol and here you are, getting all gold symbols
I mean the one you'd usually reach while playing casually is the silver luck symbol. The others? well...
I got silver in battle pike, factory and if i wouldn't use 2v2, i could propably get dome one too
Facts I almost fought Anabel for silver and fell 1 battle short a freaking Linder hit 2 guilloteens to kill my blaziken and peliper blaziken did 97% with blaze kick and pelliper missed fly and both died and then manetric died to ursaring I was so upset
Shades of Blue blaziken and gardevoir are both viable lol. Blaziken is one of the strongest non legendaries in the history of Pokémon
The only symbol I got in Emerald was the silver symbol of the battle pike
I found an uncatchable shiny dusclops in the battle pike when I was younger
Sad times 😩

John, you're quickly becoming my favorite Pokemon content creator. I love seeing you tackle the challenges I could have only ever dreamed of as a kid. I literally maxed out my clock in Emerald at 999:59 trying to beat the Battle Frontier as an 11-12 year old, but the best I could do was three silver symbols and one gold, from the Battle Pike.
Watching you accomplish this was an emotional experience for me. You make me want to fire up my old copy, which had its battery run dry and made time-based events impossible, and give this another go.
How did you do?
I remember going into the battle palace with a Wailord who knew Surf, Ice Beam, Double Team and Substitute and had Leftovers as its held item on my first playthrough of Emerald as a kid and apparently it loved spamming both Double Team and Substitute. The battles took literally forever. I'm assumming it mostly won through PP stalling because struggle did less damage than leftovers would heal.
+ HOW EASILY CAN YOU GET EVERY GOLD SYMBOL IN POKEMON EMERALD'S BATTLE FRONTIER?
-Werster: in exactly 19:04:14
- Excarion 17:04:49
and the TAS by GodessMaria is about 9 hours (could be shorter but it continues from the any% glitchless TAS so it has to backtrack for the Battle Frontier prep work instead of doing that simultaneously during the story playthrough.)

The battle tower was one of my favorite addition in older gen games. One of my favorite thing to do was double battles with rented pokemon. That always tested my ability to use two essentially random pokemon together as effectively as possible. I think a video on this could be very cool!
Friendly reminder that his voice is hella soothing.
Also, Pokemon Stadium challenges when?
I can’t believe they permanently killed the battle frontier. That was my favorite part of pokemon growing up.
I love the battle frontier. I remember me and my sister spending hours at the battle factory, good times :) This video makes me want to pick up Emerald again. I'm actually going to give this challenge a go! Wish me luck :)

Not just a great video, but also a really useful one for anyone revisiting this game and deciding to challenge the Battle Frontier!
I want to throw in my tangent about the idea of a Battle Frontier in future games to any and all people who are bitter about ORAS or generally hoping we would some day get another Frontier:
1. the only times GF had an abundance of extra development time to spend on implementing an entire Battle Frontier as a hefty post-game activity, was in games that were basically just polished versions of already final products, ie Emerald being an enhanced RS, and Platinum being an enhanced DP.
Being a separate game would mean that it is the focus of the project, and could even add features that sometimes feel lackluster in the main series, like trainer customization,...and more importantly, with the change to a limited-Dex philosophy for the main games from now on, since this game would be entirely about battles in an arbitrary unique location unrelated to any specific region or theme, it could allow for every single PKMN to be playable in it.
tl;dr:
we don't need a postgame with a BF, we need a BF-like Stadium/PBR game that is tailored for the competitive portion of the players.
It sounds frustrating to actually do, but I really like the concept behind the Battle Palace. You just have to trust your Pokémon (and RNG) to do what will lead them to victory. Plus it can lead to dramatic moments like your final battle with Spencer.
When I discovered the Battle Frontier would *not* be featured in ORAS… *I despaired.* Instead we got *too much water.*
You should do a video with Pokemon Colosseum!! Or Gale of Darkness
Definitely second this. The games are fun as hell.
This post game is honestly just the icing of the cake of my childhood. Even the music still gives me nostalgic chills
Dude, this is an intervention. We gotta talk about your Pokémon craze. Great video as always!
This is by far the best emerald video ive seen in my life.
I think it’s actually easier to do the Battle Dome before the Battle Tower because the IV’s of the opponent Pokémon in the Battle Dome are based on your consecutive win progress in the Battle Tower.
I'm pretty sure that's the case for Battle Factory, not Battle Dome.
I’ve always had more success running the battle factory at level 50 just cause you don’t have to worry about your opponent having tier 3/final evolution mons and less move variety so you don’t have as many variables to worry about
I'd love to see you try and get every Medal in Pokemon Black/White 2.
After all these years thanks to you i just now realise soul dew doesn't work in battle frontier, i remember i was shocked how all these random pokemon were able to survive lati's attacks. It never occured to me the item doesn't do anything, but this explains everything
Battle Dome was always my favorite because I liked reading the brackets and predicting who would win.
The designs of the Frontier Brains are so cool, especially Pike Queen Lucy
If anyone ever tries this don’t do the battle tower first like he does.
The IVs of every Pokémon in certain battle areas become 31.
Which iirc is why the battle Factory is so brutally difficult
I made that mistake
Never played it as a kid becuase i went to battle frontier not really knowing how to competive battle but now years later knowing general ideas its fun
"Battle tower is the least enjoyable facility"
No I think it's universally agreed upon that the battle palace is.
Battle Tower is boring.
It's literally just the game.
This team rocks. I just conquered the battle frontier. Thank you, man.
How long did this take it took me 25 hours to get 1 silver
I feel you man...
Battle Pike is absolutely the best sound track of Gen 3

he explains in another comment that he meant to say he didnt use it,
Emerald's Battle Frontier is the best thing that has ever happened in Pokemon games to date in my opinion. Wish it could be fixed, but yeah... Great video :)

I couldn't care less about the battle frontier, but your voice makes it so much easier to fall asleep at night, so (sincerely) thank you :).
Edit: Arena is secure, Tower is the last difficult one now, but I’m playing through Ruby again to get a better Latios with better IVs
EDIT: I’ve completed the Arena and Pyramid, but I’m currently stuck in the Battle Tower.
Been following awhile. This channel is so good
3 minutes into the video and I’ve already had to watch 5 ads. This is why I normally use Adblock. Sadly turning it back on
Johnstone is officially a masochistic just for the pain he goes through to bring us these vids
My favorite battle frontier is easily hg/ss, the modes were fun especially dahlia’s facility. I was really bummed out that in gen 6 we ended up with some knock off battle tower, even in the gen 3 remakes. I always liked the battle frontier because it was actual competitive battling without have to go to some real world tournament, and since people online just end up using ubers and stuff, I opted for many fun hours in the battle frontier rather than fighting little kids using legendaries.
Werster strats always blow my mind.
