The Gen 3 Pokemon Lost To Time

  • Gen 3 of Pokemon made huge waves as a game for its massive improvements over the last games in the series, Gold and Silver, but it was still very much a transitionary period for the series. Pokemon had added in game time in Gen 2, and Gen 3 struggled and succeeded in some ways at keeping and reimplementing those elements into the games. Here we discuss the ways that time effected Gen 3 and the losses and gains that were made as a result! And if you enjoy the video, please give it a like and subscribe to the channel!
    Thanks for hanging out yall, school is real tough on me right now and I love making the little things but when I have time to do a big video like this I am overjoyed! Let's GO
    Gameplay comes from my Pokemon FireRed, Emerald, Colosseum, and XD cartridges and discs.

    okay so hi since it seems to be coming up a lot I want to add I know how to solder, I have replaced the batteries on several of my gen 2 and gen 3 carts and gotten the clocks to come back but I only learned how to solder in the last year and thought it would be cool to consider the game state that is/was created if you don't have that ability or just picked up a game off the shelf. also the response on this one is blowing my mind, yall are amazing and hopefully what's to come doesn't disappoint

      tbh you dont even need soldering equipment or the knowledge on how to use it. You can do the same job with just a little knife or flat screwdriver and some tape. The two pins are stuck on the battery, but if you are careful and apply some force you can detach them. Then all you have to do is "fasten" the new battery between the pins with some tape, just make sure it's a tight one. Yes, it's not the cleanest job and you might need to try several times, but it can save you money and time if you don't have the equipment and lack the knowledge of how to use it.

    The Liechi Berry being so rare in gen 3 actually resulted in an absolutely hysterical record;
    -some dude at GameFreak realized that the Liechi Berry was not only so rare that it was near impossible to obtain, but that if your battery died and you already used the berry, it would become permanently unobtainable. How did they solve this? By giving people Shiny Zigzagoon, of course!
    Every Shiny Zigzagoon distributed by Mystery Gift held a Liechi Berry, sort of as an apology for the poor game planning.
    The event lasted for a whopping *3 years.*
    That means that Zigzagoon has the honor of having the longest distribution period of *any* event Pokémon.

    • @nickolaswilcox425

      that was the berry glitch patch event wasnt it? i believe its on two formats, rom cart and demo disk, both have been dumped and finding physical copies of either is nearly impossible. and its unusual as an event in that its repeatable on the same game, it just doesn't check if youve already done it. although linking with frlg will also apply the berry patch or so ive been told

    • @RikkuEcRud
      @RikkuEcRud ปีที่แล้ว +114

      That Zigzagoon wasn't compensation for dead batteries and the inability to get a Liechi Berry, it was enticement to come and get a glitch related to berry growth patched. That event was held well before the batteries started dying.

    The most frustrating obstacle for me was Milotic, or rather, evolving Feebas. This was before you could trade to evolve it with a Prism Scale. My battery was dead, so no berries would grow. I had to ration every berry I received to make sure I had enough to max out its beauty stat with Pokeblocks. This is all on top of the hell of catching a Feebas to begin with. One of the most memorable system clock events for me was being able to train an apprentice in Emerald. After beating the game and reaching the Battle Frontier, you could find a (randomised per save file) trainer in the Battle Tower that recognised you as the champion and would ask you for advice on how to build their team, asking you about what pokemon to use, what moves they should learn, items etc. You could answer one of these questions per day and after answering them all, they would leave.
    After doing this, you could then go on to encounter them as an opponent during the singles tower mode, or even battle alongside them in the multi tower mode, and in both cases they would be using the exact team you recommended them.

    This video is a really good summary of why the clock is so crucial for the Gen 3 Hoenn games. Back in 2019 I got the battery changed on my childhood copy of Emerald after a decade of the dry battery message, restarted the save file and was absolutely FLOORED by how much more content there was in a game with a working battery. I woke up every day excited to see what random event would be on TV (swarms, sales, Blend Master, etc), or how many berries I would get in my daily berry rounds. The lottery, free daily items from NPCs, and Shoal Cave were also really cool to experience again. Still checking for Mirage Island every day! Overall this experience reminded me of why I loved Gen 3 so much back in the day, and now I'd probably list Emerald as the best Pokemon game when the battery's working.

Or is the lack of game console due to all of them having failed with time unacceptable? If we are to follow all the way to "preserved eternaly", then PC emulation or even PC ports are the solution. Or, just make PC games, period. But that would mean the end of consoles... (but we can't have that, can we?)

      Firered/Leafgreen stick to the original games almost obsessively. They don't have time mechanics even though they came out after Ruby and Sapphire because gen 1 didn't have time, and every gen 2 pokemon is locked behind the national pokedex, from crobat to stantler, and many of them have absurdly low encounter rates. This is why FR/LG get flak for being a bit boring, they don't offer anything new besides Sevii islands. Also why HG/SS are considered the best remakes, they accomplished everything FR/LG failed at.

    • @bunnyben5607
      @bunnyben5607 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@l.n.3372 Yeah they were electric/steel type, that was one of the few things they did change. This was because ruby/sapphire already had magnemite at electric/steel and frlg had to be backwards compatible. Also some other stuff like movepools were changed, for instance giving non dragon rage dragon-type moves to dragonite because of ruby/sapphire. Though every pokemon's movepool had to be changed for rbysap compatibility, not just dragonite.

    I had no idea about the respawning items in FR/LG, that’s so cool!
    Berry Farming is my favorite side feature of Gen 3, being able to fly around the region and manage berries in this way is so much fun! I always like imagining that if there’s only two or three berries, wild Pokémon came to eat some and I returned a bit too late :P
    My favorite return of it is in Gen 7 with your own Pokémon helping you to manage the crops, it’s cute. I loved all the flavor text, especially “[Pokemon] is keeping pests away from the crop!” What a hard worker

That fact was really interesting to learn from here, and I don't think it was one you intended, but it really stuck with me! And also, at the loss of your save data, whenever the game is reset, you have the opportunity to set your clock in R/S/E, and while some of those time based events still wont occur, you can lock if you get an espeon/umbreon or what tide the Shoal Cave is at. Its the only way to do a full Professor Oak's challenge on a battery-dry cartridge (depending on how you define the rules).

    My battery eventually died in Sapphire, but my most memorable moment related to dead batteries in old gen games was in Gen 2.
    I owned copies of Pokemon Silver and Crystal as a kid both of which i loved to bits. Crystal was the first game i found a shiny Pokemon in (Nidorina) and i was so proud to have trained my Feraligatr to Lv100.
    Then someday when me and my parents moved houses, the games both got lost in a cardboard box somewhere. I searched for them for years with no success until my parents rummaged through those same boxes looking for some christmas decorations. They gave them to me and i still had the same Gameboy i used to play them on so i plopped them right in. My Silver was on Gym 2 because i had used Silver to play the game from the beginning whenever i felt like it. My Crystal still had the shiny and the Lv100 Feraligatr when i checked and i was so happy. I then immediately called up my friend at the time who i played a lot of the games with and told him i found something he needs to see, so i grabbed both games and my Gameboy and ran all the way to his house.
    When i booted up Crystal at his house, "Continue" was an option nowhere to be found. I was sure i just didnt have the cartridge in right so i pulled it out, blew into it and slotted it back in, nothing. I didnt know at the time, but my battery had finally died after years of the games just sitting in a dusty attic. For people who don't know - dead battery in Gen 2 means your game can't save anymore and you lose your save file.
    It took me a while to process so since i couldnt show my friend, i told him what was on the cartridge before the save file poofed. Went home and tried to figure what i could do to get my precious years-old save file back, but couldnt find anything. Which makes it all the more surreal that it worked for just ONE more boot-up of the game, it's like it wanted me to be able to say good-bye to my most precious Pokemon at the time. I still think of that moment booting up Crystal and seeing those two sometimes because of how this happened. It's just a cool memory.

    My Emerald battery has been dry for roughly a decade, so I normally just avoid any time based events outright. Luckily Emerald has very few of them to begin with, arguably the biggest being not being able to grow berries. As far as regional dex mons go, that makes Milotic a hard ask to obtain, but I'm normally one to try and use it in generations where Prism Scale is possible. Espeon/Umbreon being unobtainable isn't as bad seeing as I really have no reason to be trading in the Gen 3 games in 202X.

    Obtaining Umbreon - when I bought an authentic copy of Emerald (in case anyone is wondering, it costed around $90 in 2022 and came in amazing condition), I knew that this would be an issue when I initially started the game and saw the internal battery message. Therefore I did a bit of research beforehand on what time of day Eevee would evolve into Umbreon, because this was the evolution I wanted - you can set your clock at the beginning of the game, in other words, basically choosing whether you wanted Espeon or Umbreon. So I traded over from Leafgreen after beating the Elite 4 on Emerald, then doing the necessary post-game content on LG, and evolved it. Its a shame Umbreon kinda sucks before the Gen 4 physical/special split. As far as the cave ordeal, I actually had to buy separate Sapphire and Ruby copies (repros this time because I'm not rich) to complete the Pokedex anyways, because I wanted the cyndaquil Birch gives you for completing it. So I was able to set clocks accordingly to get the Pokemon that appeared in that cave during low/high tides. Seriously a pain in the ass but worth it because Emerald is my favorite and arguably the best Pokemon game in the entire franchise.

I remember evolving one on my ruby (with an empty battery), but I could only get that one. Then I tried something, I borrowed a friends game which also had an empty battery and boom! I managed to get the other. Apparently, in r/s/e when time freezes it freezes during day or night. I was lucky enough that my friend's copy had its time frozen during day and my copy was frozen during night or vice versa.

    You could even put berry farming in with a steps based mechanic.
    Heck you could even have a day/night cycle simulated by step counts.

    You forgot to mention Feebas, which can only be found as a 50% encounter on 6 random water tiles along Route 119 in RSE. Every day, the tiles will randomly shuffle, so along with the lottery and Mirage Island (which the ID number is guaranteed 0000) a dry battery is also beneficial for encountering Feebas as the water tiles will always stay the same!
    The replies are saying that the tiles will shift anyways, so I guess this comment is actually irrelevant

    • @delta5287
      @delta5287 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's 50% actually. The six tiles do shift after a while even if the battery is dead, and that's what makes it a pain in the butt to even find.

    • @Ahlnie
      @Ahlnie ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The tiles only shuffled when you changed the trendy phrase in Dewford.

    • @delta5287
      @delta5287 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Ahlnie I know they shuffle when the trendy phrase changes but what I was saying was that it doesn't rely on the battery for some reason.

    I specifically learned how to replace the battery in the cartridge so I could still do timed events. It's actually somewhat easy to do.

    8:23 fun fact: apparently if you try to get the Wynaut egg on a game with a dead internal battery, it will become a bad egg and won’t hatch! I’ve heard it can even mess with your game data.

    • @tfx9223
      @tfx9223 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      What? This is super wrong. The Wynaut egg is completely legal. The only way you can get a bad egg is by performing glitches, not playing the game normally.

      @@tfx9223 Oops, my bad. That egg’s still messed up though, I’ve heard a lot of people having it never hatch for one reason or another.

    You unlocked a core memory for me, I’ve been playing Pokémon for so long I forget things like this. I was barely old enough to read and I found the ice room simply because I got stuck in the cave and couldn’t get out. Never managed to evolve my snorunt into a glare however
