I have to agree with some. I wouldn't have done that myself on a 80's gibson. However, you did an amazing job on this one. Too bad it's a 3 piece maple top.
I get the point a lot of people are making about wanting to keep it vintage (and personally me I would have kept it like that myself), but you have to understand something.....it's his guitar (or an order, wasn't too sure of that), so the actual owner can do what they want.
Is the 1989 Les Paul a vintage guitar? Of course it is good to value the old ones. But I also enjoy having my guitar in my own color. I like the original color too.
Fantastic craftsmanship! Too many guitar modification/restoration videos have someone obnoxiously talking rubbish with some generic music in the background. This was lovely and oddly relaxing to watch. You have a fantastic attention to detail!
I found my 78 Greco Custom lawsuit-era in Chiba, and much like you, I brought it back to life. Mine was sodai gomei day, but it appears that you just bought yours (nearly) new.
That is true example of crafstmanship right there, I really love and appreciate the amount of detailed work you have done to restore this LP. Thumbs up! 👍
what was the turn around time for this project? specially the restoration of the finishes without the electronics? planning to put a new finish to my ebony lp into a goldtop..just wondering the time that would take..
You take great care in your workmanship and that is to be commended. I was fine with the back and side stain/color, but the top (face) color is a mystery...I see you noted it was requested work - However, I believe the customer requesting this work should have been taken out in a field and shot. If it were mine, a deep cleaning/polishing would have been my request - although only 30 years old, it has some character to the guitar that should have been preserved.
I'm sorry I can't understand English perfectly. It's clear that protecting Old Gibson. Nevertheless, the guitar is a personal property and its shape, color and personal freedom. I respect it. I think it's good to remove rust and polish metal parts to protect your guitar. Sorry for not understanding all the comments.
So the customer should be shot for wanting to something different to HIS guitar? Am I the only person who thinks that comment is purely insane? First it's a Gibson. Who cares. Second it's a Gibson. Who cares.
Two Otters Andy did do what the customer wanted and he did a very fine job, but you (customer) shouldn’t do this to a Gibson. Epiphone yes but not a Gibson.
Hi, I have a pair of hb-r and hb-l from a 90's explorer and I would install in my r8 les paul. But looking at the base plate, the bare wire is disconnected from pickup. do i have to reconnect bare wire on the pcb, then on the volume pot with the black wire? thank you andrea
Nice craftsmanship. But not too sure about the top color choice. But it’s not my guitar. I feel the owner has the right in making whatever choice they choose. Nonetheless, very nice work.
hey brother, amazin job! did you made any fret incline after 12th fret or frets are in the straight line and some relief? my neck relief works only before 12th fret, after 12th neck stay straight =((
THe way i see it, Gibson Les Pauls are the most over priced and over hyped buitars on the market, It's not like its a 58 standard that's irreplaceable. Just an 80's era paul with nothing special about it and no crazy provenance, and at the end of the day, it's YOUR guitar. I think it turned out beautifully, i personally would have left it alone but then again its not mine! Great craftsmanship. The Gibson purists are kind of like prius owners, smug and fickle.
I gotta 73 LP BB fretless wonder that's beat to shyt. Has an old splined neck break at the headstock over the vollute and it looks like bondo under the paint behind the tailpiece. Never refretted and the frets are still in good shape. Wouldn't change a thing on it.
What did you put on the front? Stain or some kind of oil? And did you protect it after that with any kind of clear coat, wax, laquer...?? I love that satin finish, it's what I want to do in a guitar but I don't know if I can leave it with a couple of coats of oil. Did I say that I love that finish, btw?? 😉👌 Edit: I've read your answer to other comments and now I know it's oil. How many coats for being finished? I want to apply an "almost transparent" one just to enhance the wood, but It will be my first time and I don't know how to balance the "protection" of the finish and not to darken the wood more than I want
Im looking to strip the paint off of my Les Paul. How hot and how long do you go with the iron to get the paint to come of like that? Did you also use the iron on the carved maple top?
Nice technique in recovering the serial number and the "MADE IN U.S.A." stamping. I'm having trouble recovering my White LP Custom ... serial # (?)2115120. Must be a 72 model because it has the volute and the missing dot in the "Gibson" logo. I purchased it 'used' in 1994 from a music store in Mississippi. Thanks for the ideas .... very nice craftsmanship. ALL in La. USA.
@@Andybassguitar Excuse me ... I should have said it is a 1975 Les Paul, probably made on July 30, 1975, s/n 120, at the Kalamazoo plant. It suffered a brief flood in 2016 and has recently been repainted. The paint work is OK, but I want all the stamping showing so when it is sold one day, there will be no question of its age. Andy bass & guitar , your work was awsome.Very nice work, the comment was meant for the customer, but of course its his choice.Too bad the customer didnt have you just maby do a resto to put the guitar back to original specs,
So around the 7:25 mark it appears that you've drilled out some blue plastic from the end pin. Does Gibson commonly use spacers for the end pins? I had a Les Paul Classic a few years ago, that fell apart on me within the first few months of owning it. It showed signs of being dropped on it's end pin. The pin literally fell out while I was playing, and sawdust and a blue spacer-type piece of plastic fell out of the guitar (not to mention that the factory-installed Bigsby fell off and the paint of the guitar checked/shattered from the incident). At the time I wondered if it was common practice for Gibson to use devices like this to fill over-drilled holes. Seeing it here in your video only made me wonder that again.
The oil finish on the mahogany is a great idea, but whatever you did to that beautiful maple top was criminal.. By the way, that's not a restoration.. Restoration means you return a guitar to it's original "like new" condition. in this case you should have painted it with black lacquer.
IMHO, it would a lot cooler if it was natural back/black top, like the Lou Pallo model. But every person has their own taste, I guess. And there was definitely great craftsmanship there, this refinish process could've easily gone wrong in a number of ways if done by someone without the required skills.
I like the refinished back a lot. I'm not sure about the top, perhaps a blackburst would be an option, considering the colordifferences in the wood. It was a nice video to watch, nevertheless!

1 piece body, 1 piece neck,.. features for which you will pay 7-8k now , and only in the Gibson "custom" shop... excellent rework !
That’s a 3 piece top, that’s why it was painted
More custom shop than custom shop. Really making it one of a kind
Whenever I see thick layer of paint and lacquer being removed, I can almost hear the guitar say "OMG I can breath again!"
I get the point a lot of people are making about wanting to keep it vintage (and personally me I would have kept it like that myself), but you have to understand something.....it's his guitar (or an order, wasn't too sure of that), so the actual owner can do what they want.

Nice finish good job
Interesting. Honestly don't like the stained color. Would have been far more attractive with say, a Honey Burst. 3 piece top.
That's why Gibson makes them with more than one finish.
Andy, I was hoping to hear that good looking Les Paul playing a melody with that sweet sounding piano !??
