Gibson Les Paul Custom Vintage Guitar Repair/Restoration

  • Gibson Les Paul Custom Vintage Guitar made in 1987 on my Luthier Workbench. This amazing Guitar has a massiv problem.
    After the inspection I have noticed that every Fret on this Instrument is loose. The original frets of this guitar were replaced 2 years ago and at first glance everything seems to be fine but there is a lot of fret buzzing going on over the entire ebony fingerboard. The owner who got this beautiful Instrument from his Father in 1991, who in turn bought this guitar new in 1987, asked me to take care about this heavy played Instrument. I decided not to make a new Fret Job, instead I have taken an unusual path..... This is a quite tricky and time consuming repair and in this Video you can follow the whole process. I will also explain and show a couple of "Luthier Hacks" in this Video. So if you are interested in my Luthier Craftsmanship stay tuned and enjoy the Video. I love doing stuff like that - if you are interested in more of my Luthier life Projects, please feel free to check out my other extended Workshop Videos on this channel.
    Enjoy watching and sharing.
    Best Regards Nik

    So to repair it you just flow a high viscocity glue into every fret and clamp it down with a correct radius block, let it dry, remove excess glue, check if it needs to be leveled, if yes you level, crown it, polish the frets, clean up and oil the ebony board, check if the nut grooves need to be touched up (usually yes). That thing is loved and looks awesome, beat up black customs look so awesome!

    I love this! ... I've found the work time on thin CA glue to be really unpredictable. And those frets are so incredibly loose. I think I would have just re-fretted it. But you obviously made that work. always impressive.

    The frets look really not worn so yes, no need to refret (what you answered below..) - btw; on the bay you can find many shops for clinical supplies, who sell equipment which is past its BB Date - so essentially not steril any more.. - I use 0.4mm Syringe needles for these glue jobs...; they fit on most glue bottles and when used carefully, the glue basically runs into the spaces on its own.. - again wonderful work Nik - Greetings to you and my Hometown; Markus

    Hello, what causes the frets to loosen? thanks......

    • @petrekguitars
      @petrekguitars  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Jim, this can have several reasons. The Fretslots were to sloppy and if so the repair guy didn’t glue the Frets in. Or what I assume is that frets were glued in and by polishing with a power tool the glue get soft and the frets get loose and cause this problem. Best Regards Nik

    I'm gonna take a wild guess and say that the bridge pickup was swapped out at some point, seeing as it is 8 years older than the guitar, and there is no way they had 8 Y/O pickups laying around. It does sound good, like any great rock n roll machine should.

    • @petrekguitars
      @petrekguitars  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks a lot for your Feedback. Yes you are correct ....In the 80´s Gibson used the Bill Lawrence Pickups you can point them because there were "waxed" or better fill with black epoxy. Like on the Neck Pickup. But if the Pickup was damaged there is no way to repair it. So I assume that this was the case and someone installed the 1979 Gibson Pickup in the Bridge position. Best Regards Nik

    • @petrekguitars
      @petrekguitars  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for your question. Yes you can wipe it of but if you clamp the Radius Jig down it will produce some squeeze out... And I have to remove this anyway... I apply the wax to provide too much glue sticking on the Fretboard. Best Regards Nik

  • @v3n0mm3n0
    @v3n0mm3n0 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    What causes this? Were the new frets made using a wrong radius?

    • @petrekguitars
      @petrekguitars  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for your question. This can have different causes. I assume that the fret slots were to wide or if the guy who made this glued them in an then by polishing the Frets with a power tool overheat the glue so that it gets loosen and don't hold the fret in there position. A not 100% prebend on the frets would not cause this issue... Best Regards Nik

    If you have to re glue down basically every fret, why not just refret the whole board and do it right with a proper fretboard sand, refret, level, and polish? Its a vintage guitar, yet its been refretted already at least once because it has no binding nibs. Seems to me the amount of work being done in this video vs having a total refret done is a no brainer. The ebony board and inlays would be sanded, and you have new frets with plenty of life to them that were crowned, leveled and polished. There could very well be an issue with the last refret as well seeing how many of these frets have lifted. The slots could have been cut too wide hence the lifting, or poor choice of glue used "maybe no glue at all" during the last refret. But how does one know without removing the frets? Im not knocking the work being done, but just saying to avoid future issues, a full re-fret would seem to address any concerns about who did the last refret/why so many frets lifted.

      Thanks for your feedback and for sharing your opinion. Yes you are totally correct. Normally I would do exactly what you recommend. But in this case the owner asked me to fix this issue with less amount of work because the Gutar was refreted 2 years ago and the frets are like new...but there were all loosen. So I decided to chose this way...Best Regards Nik

      Thanks for your question Chris. This Guitar was bought new in 1987 and the owner give this Instrument in 1991 to his son who played it since the nearly 3 Days a week on stage ( and still do) as his main Instrument. This is absolutely authentic nothing done on it tho make it looks older....In these Days we see a Gibson Murphy aged or a Fender Custom Shop Relic and we are taught to believe that it is authentic..... but keep in mind this is always some kind of a copy of the real Stuff....and this Custom is a very good example for this.

      @@petrekguitars Interesting. I was given my LP Custom brand new in 1985 by my father as a present (funny parallel) and it doesn't nearly look as beaten up as this one and it also didn't just sit in the case all the years. I guess it is a question of priorities how much you take care of your instrument. I don't like when my instruments look like as if they fell from a truck, no matter how old they are. Patina and neglect are two totally different things. I don't get why people are so obsessed with how much abused an instrument can look like, while still remaining functional. Imagine people would do the same to their cars or their apartment furniture. I would never buy a Murphy lab guitar and also would never buy this Les Paul, if it would be for sale. Fortunately there is no accounting for taste and each to his own. 🙂

    You don't have to polish by hand if you don't spend 20 seconds on each fret with a Dremel wheel. It takes me about 30 seconds total to polish frets on my guitars.
    I've never had glue heat up and come loose but I don't leave the thing there for 20 seconds at a time to get hot, either.
    Don't use a Dremel wheel and they won't get that hot. I use a 4 or 5 inch (100-125mm) polishing pad and they're never hot. Ever.
