It's physically possible to put a larger engine in. However, this requires alot of modification to your existing accessory drive, wiring, and drivetrain. Wiring and plumbing a new engine is always the most difficult regardless of what engine you choose.

what the proceedure after the re-install? I'm having VANOS adaptiation stop codes and over advanced timing. I timed the engine correctly but the VANOS keeps making it go out of timing then back. Is there a specific reset in ISTA?

I wish i could provide more info but It's been a very long time since I timed an m54. I would either check with a Bently service manual or try finding a video on specifically timing/vanos installation. I'm sure there are great resources on TH-cam. Thanks for watching

Yes, In his previous video of removing the engine, he makes a note of "evacuating" the refrigerant.
